• What ethical problems realistically arise in programming?

  When I co-oped during college, I had to fill out an evaluation of the co-op afterwards. One metric I always had to rate was how much the company required me to "Make ethical decisions related to your profession." This always seemed kinda silly- I mean, my first co-op was writing java apps to manage industrial radios. There wasn't much moral ambiguity going on. Anyway, I'm wonder what sort of ethical dilemmas one might actually encounter in software development. Edit: It should be noted that no ethically-trained software engineer would ever consent to write a DestroyBaghdad procedure. • 301 Redirects for regional variants of a homepage

  I am planning on implementing a website which has regional homepage variants. For Example: mycompany.com/europe mycompany.com/us The rest of the site is region agnostic and content will continue such as: mycompany.com/news mycompany.com/about-us etc For homepage (.com) requests, I plan on redirecting users to the correct homepage variant (via 301). If I cannot determine the correct one, I will fallback to redirecting them to the US homepage (/us). From an SEO point of view, firstly is this ok? or should I be doing anything additional to this for making search engines aware of the regional differences? As crawlers are region agnostic, I plan on directing them to the US page with a 301, or should I have something on the .com page which they use? Being that the regional homepage's will likely be the most visited pages, they should show up in result sitelinks when searching for mycompany (which I think is a good thing). Apologies for the slightly open question - I know anything SEO related is more opinion/best practice than fact but am purely looking for advice.

Example: Dog a = new Dog(); Dob b = a; Is there a situation where this would be useful? Why would this be a preferred solution to using a whenever you want to interact with the object represented by a? Edit: Can I just say that all of your dog related examples are Delightful!

• Installing wireless drivers without internet access [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How can I install and download drivers without internet? (This is related to my other question; my approach there didn't work.) My friend has (I'm quite sure) a Broadcom wireless chipset. However, he doesn't have any wired internet access on the machine, so his only option is to boot into Windows (he is using Wubi) and download packages there. This means we can't use the Hardware Drivers dialog to install the drivers. He can't fetch the repository information, so the Broadcom driver packages aren't showing up in Synaptic. Is there any way to get Wi-Fi working?

• Dual Boot: access Mac OS HD folders from Ubuntu

  I did it!!! I'm right now writting from Ubuntu 11.10 installed in my MacBook Pro using Dual Boot!!! THe only thing is, how can I now access my Mac folders? From Ubuntu if I try to open Music, Documents or any of those folders related to the Mac user I get the following: [The folder contents could not be displayed. You do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of "Music"] I can access them if I run Nautilus from root (gksudo nautilus), but I would like to just be able to browse those folders.   I deployed a project some days ago that allow to extract some medical articles using the results of a questionnaire completed by a user. For instance, if I reply on questionnaire I'm affected by Diabetes type 2 and I'm a smoker, my algorithm extracts all articles related to diabetes bubbling up all articles contains information about Diabetes type 2 and smoking. Basically we created a list of topic and, for every topic we define a kind of "guideline" that allows to extract and order informations for a user. I'm quite sure there are some better way to put on relationship two content but I was not able to find them on network. Could you suggest my a model, algorithm or paper to better understand this kind of problem and that helps me to find a faster, and more accurate way to extract information for an user?

  I work for a small company which has less than 100 persons. Several months ago, this company offered me position of SA and I accepted. There are three teams in this company, and I work for one of them. This is the first time I work as a SA. During the past months, I find I don't have any power of management, I even can't let the team member do things (coding-related) in the way which is correct and more efficient. The team members argue with me on very very basic technical questions and I have to explain to them again and again. Though some members did take my advice, other members stubbornly program in their way which frequently proved wrong finally. Recently I feel a little tired and confused. I wonder what is correct relationship between a Software Architect and team members including the team leader? Besides, is software architect also leaded by the Team Leader?

• Today is my first day in the land of backbone.js

  I am semi-excited to say that today is my first day into the land of backbone.js.  This will of course take me into many other new javascript-y areas.  As I have primarily been focused on building backend systems for the past many years…with no focus on client side bits…this will be all new ground for me.  Very exciting! I am sure that this endeavor will lead to writing about many new findings along the way.  Expect the subject of near future postings to not be related to MVC or server side code. • cannot install build essential from Ubuntu 10.10 cd

  after a fresh installation of Ubuntu 10.10 i tried to install build-essential from the Ubuntu installation CD. I put the cd in the cdrom and in the software repositories i checked the box install from cd(Ubuntu 10.10 release Maverick Meerkat). Then i reloaded the software repositories. The synaptic manager then tried to download some repository related files but failed to do so as i didn't have internet connection. Then i open a terminal and wrote "sudo apt-get install build-essential". It prompted me if i want to install build essential y/N. I typed y but the terminal showed some errors and was not installed. I also tried to add the CD in the software repositories. I clicked add and it prompted me to insert a CD while the CD was still inside the cdrom. I clided "ok" then and it showed it could not find any cd. What is wrong ?

• Why is chunk size often a power of two?

  There are many Minecraft clones out there and I am working on my own implementation. A principle of terrain rendering is tiling the whole world in fixed size chunks to reduce the effort of localized changes. In Minecraft the chunk size is 16 x 16 x 256 as far as I now. And in clones I also always saw chunk sizes of a power of the number 2. Is there any reason for that, maybe performance or memory related? I know that powers of 2 play a special role in binary computers but what has that to do with the chunk size?

• Network does not connect at boot

  I am on Ubuntu 12.04, fresh install. When I boot a machine, the boot screen says Connecting to network, later it is changed to something like Did not connect, trying for another 60s. However, the network does not connect at the boot. But I can then log in without a network connection, and if I start a network manager service manually from the terminal (sudo service network-manager start), the network is connected without any problems. Please, does anybody know where the problem could be? I don't want to wait more than two minutes every computer restart :-). I am new to Ubuntu (and also to upstart) so I am a bit lost. There is no /var/log/messages, in dmesg I found this record, though it may not be related: init: network-interface (eth1) pre-start process (492) terminated with status 1 init: network-interface (eth1) post-stop process (548) terminated with status 1 Thanks Daniel

Questions' that are not suited to Stackoverflow, or provide little benefit to any user that see's the question: discussing a new API change; best practices; open source discussion; trivia type questions on Java ArrayList boxining-unboxing; Community atmosphere. I also read Jon Skeets blog post about his previous Java/C# mailing lists examples - I did not catch any names, though I did they would be of benefit to me, if I had access to any of them.

And here comes the problem - there are many developers who look really great at the interview, seem to know the technology you need and have a good job background, but after two moths of work, you find out that they are not able to work in a team, writing some code takes them very long time, and moreover, the result is not as good as it should be. So, do you use any formalized tests (are there any?)? How do you recognize a good programmer - and a good person? Are there any simple 'good' questions that might reveal the future problems? ...or is it just about your 'feeling' about the person (ie., mainly your experience), and trying him out?   Say a user could enter project data into my software. Each project has 2 variables "size" and "work" and they're related but the relationship is not known. Is there a way to programmatically determine the relationship between the variables based on previous data and forecast the amount of work provided if only given the size of the project in the future? For Example, say the user had manually entered the following projects. Project 1 - Size:1, Work: 4 Project 2 - Size:2, Work: 7 Project 3 - Size:3, Work: 10 Project 4 - Size:4, Work: x What should I look into to be able to programmatically determine, that Work = Size*3+1 and therefor be able to say that x=13?

• Is it possible to install and run Thunar 1.5.1 in Lubuntu 12.04?

  I hear that a new Thunar (with tabs!!) is ready - see this. I have added the PPA and run the update and upgrade commands but I still have Thunar 1.2.3 In Synaptic, Thunar looks ready for upgrade: It asks to uninstall some XFCE stuff that I might hope to reinstall later but then something is fishy Is this new version limited to the Xfce desktop? Also, now, when I try Update Manager, I get this: and ...unless I remove the xubuntu-dev/xfce-4.12 PPAs. So, removing Thunar in Synaptic and all that seems related to it, and then adding those PPAs, and trying to install Thunar, the following info emerges: What is to be done?

• Arabic disappeared after 12.04 upgrade!

  Well, I was amongst the 12.04 Beta upgraders, and since then I've lost the ability to write in Arabic, and I've been using Ubuntu since 2008 as an only OS without any issues, and been upgrading since then as well, except on this machine, which received one upgrade from 11.10 to 12.04 and it got messed up. I've added Arabic like usual, but it doesn't change with the keyboard's short-cut, and when I do it manually with the Mouse, then it just doesn't work, and it keeps writing in English instead. I've tried to install some iBus things, and added Arabic-kbd (m17n) but it still remains messy, let alone not having the same layout, and all I want is to get to NORMAL. So, please, is there any way to reset or initialize these keyboard related settings, so I can get back to normal and stop using the Mac just to type in Arabic, or so often using XP over Vbox? And please, no Re-install option! I just can't backup all my work right now, and there are a lot of tasks waiting for me to get them done. Thanks for any kind of support :)

• Configuration of the network manager via DBus: how to set the ad hoc mode

  I have an hard nut to crack: a nice bottle of italian Chianti wine to the solver! :) To automatically configure Wifi, I first have to kill the network manager and than activate the wifi via the commandline: I do this all automatically in my application and works great. However... it is not the right way to do this. As the user has no network gui anymore to configure some other network access. A much better and transparent way would be to configure wifi directly via network manager over the DBus interface. I was able to configure it, but I wasn't able to set it to ad hoc mode... Searching the web for a while: a lot about configuration in general but nothing related to ad hoc mode. I think the only way to do figure that out is to look into the source code of the network manager...maybe someone already did it and he can answer.

• Getting to math applications gradually

  I'm currently getting a formal degree related to computation, in particular my current focus is numerical programming, scientific computing and machine learning. I'd love to apply that knowledge in game dev and expand it with statistics, probability theory, and graph theory (probably even linear algebra). The question is: which spheres of gamedev are filled with such math stuff, is it possible to advance in those without being a part of a group of people and how to get to it gradually? P.S.: I've got experience with commercial java dev and am getting my hands on C/C++ at the moment, however, I'm opened to go ahead and try Unity3D and etc.

• Ubuntu 12.04, web cam light flashing

  Have been running Ubuntu on my Compaq C757 reliably since 9.10. Currently running a fresh install of 12.04 LTS. Somewhere during my regular updates, my webcam started flashing its power light. Light flashes from logon screen all throughout my session. I am not running Google Chrome but chromium and firefox. Webcam works normally whenever I run Cheese webcam booth, light comes on solid and webcam works normally. I close out of Cheese, webcam shuts off, and then the light starts blinking again. My system is dual boot, when I boot into Windows 7, webcam does not exhibit this problem. I suspect issue may be related to new laptop power management settings in kernel based on research on the web of similar problems, but I do not know how to instruct it to treat webcam differently.
