• How do I access site.project.rails (running on host) from VMWare fusion?

  I have a rails app setup and running on my snow leopard MacBook - the app is being served by Passenger. As part of the setup they had me add entries for 127.0.0.1 site.project.rails in my hosts file so I could reach the site from site.project.rails I can't for the life of me figure out how to get the app show up in VMWare. I have XP setup and browse to http://site.project.rails and I can't get it to show up. I setup a basic rails app, being served at localhost:3000 by webrick, I can get that to load by visiting my hosts ip (http://192.168.1.1:3000/). I added the same hosts I added on my Mac to Windows. I also Bridged the network under settings for the VM. What am I missing?

• Why is SSH finding remote keys for other accounts?

  This is a strange issue I'm having with SSH from my Macbook Pro to a Linux (Ubuntu 11.10) server. I have a DSA key setup on the remote Linux server under my home directory like this: /home/me/.ssh/authorzied_keys I also have the same DSA key setup for a few other accounts on the machine named "foo" and "bar". I can log into all of the accounts fine without any password. Therefore, the DSA keys are all setup correctly. The strange behavior I'm seeing is when debugging the SSH connection. During the connection, the SSH debug is outputting this: debug2: key: /Users/me/.ssh/id_dsa (0x7f91a1424220) debug2: key: /home/foo/.ssh/id_dsa (0x7f91a1425620) debug2: key: /home/bar/.ssh/id_rsa (0x7f91a1425c60) debug2: key: /Users/me/.ssh/id_rsa (0x0) This is strange for so many reasons, but essentially, why is SSH listing out keys on the server (/home/foo/.ssh/id_dsa and /home/bar/.ssh/id_rsa)? These files don't even exist on the server, so why are they listed? I'm not logging into the "foo" or "bar" accounts, so why is SSH even listing those? On my Macbook Pro, I only have a DSA key, but SSH is listing out an RSA key, what's that all about? Another user on the server doesn't get any of these messages when they log in and they have the exact same setup for their DSA key and the exact same Macbook Pro setup as mine? Does anyone know what these messages are and why SSH is outputting them?

• Can I have a .desktop Launcher for both Python2 and Python3 depending on version installed?

  After very few issues only I moved my application from Python2 to Python3 making sure it will still run with Python 2.7, and hence has python = 2.7 as dependency only. This was mainly done because Python3, and some dependencies are not installed in a default 12.04 LTS, and I do not want my users to have to install all Python3 only to run my script. When I create an appname.desktop launcher I now need to decide if it starts my application using Python2, or Python3 like EXEC=python /path/app.py EXEC=python3 /path/app.py But what I would like it to do is to Launch the application with the Python3 interpreter if Python3 is installed. Otherwise use Python2 if Python3 is not installed. How can this be done? Do I need to tell it in my package installation script, or can I have a launcher which can handle both (in case people install Python3 after they had installed my script)?

• Why does my sprite glitch when moving? [closed]

  Using Slick 2D/Java, I'm using the mouse to rotate a sprite and WASD to move it (A and D are used to strafe). I finally got the directional keys and rotation to work in sync, but I'm having problems with sporadic movement. It seems that the move speed is not always set to the value I have it at. Sometimes the sprite with just shoot across the screen. Furthermore, it seems that at 0 degrees, when the left key is pressed, the sprite moves backwards, not to the left. There also seems to be quite a bit of glitching when two keys are pressed, like left and up. Anyone see anything obvious?   I just uploaded two new releases to Codeplex. IdentityServer B1 refresh A number of bug fixes and streamlined extensibility interfaces. Mostly a result of adding the Windows Azure support. Nothing has changed with regards to setup. Make sure you watch the intro video on the Codeplex site. IdentityServer B1 (Windows Azure Edition) I have now implemented all repositories for Windows Azure backed data storage. The default setup assumes you use the ASP.NET SQL membership provider database in SQL Azure and Table Storage for relying party, client certificates and delegation settings. The setup is simple: Upload your SSL/signing certificate via the portal Adjust the .cscfg file – you need to insert your storage account, certificate thumbprint and distinguished name There is a setup tool that can automatically insert the certificate distinguished names into your config file Adjust the connection string for the membership database in WebSite\configuration\connectionString.config Deploy Feedback Feature-wise this looks like the V1 release to me.   My first post here. Clean install of 12.04.1. Previously 10.04. Have been running a p2035n printer without problem. Now, no matter what paper tray I select it prints to the top "by-pass" feeder--not the lower main tray. And when I select to print to manual feed, it does not wait for me to put in paper (like it used to), but prints immediately. The printer is on a samba share and is physically plugged into a WinXP machine. Its uri is smb:///computername/p2035n. I have tried several of the offered drivers for this hp machine, and even tried generic-laser. Same result on all. Here are some other things I have tried (losing 2-3 hours of my time!): hp-check -t reports “error: User needs to be member of group 'lp' to enable print, scan & fax. ” and “warning: Printer is not HPLIP installed. Printers must use the hp: or hpfax: CUPS backend to function in HPLIP.” needed to download HPLIP 3.12.11 followed http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/install/index.html sh hplip-3.12.11-run says that before setup logout and then on login run hp-setup hp-setup could not find the printer ran hp-check -t again, found I was not in group lp ran hp-check --fix and it fixed that problem, asks for reboot rebooted after running update manager (new kernel) and hp-check -t shows no errors this time all the tray selections end up on the bypass tray hp-setup still cannot find the printer So is there a way to make this work?   I'm a newbie to Ubuntu and Im looking to run Java code from the command line. Ive checked that path as well. • Thoughts on home NAS server

  I currently have a NAS with a 2x2TB HDD 1x16GB SSD layout on a mini-itx atom board. The NAS is in a Lian Li PC-Q07 case. On this system I was running freebsd 8 with a gmirror raid 1 setup, which was enough for my needs. So far I was using the NAS for: Fileserver with AFP protocol (only mac clients used) SVN server hosting all my source trees of my projects JIRA (performance was okay-ish) Timemachine backup for the macs The power consumption was about 38W, although I did not put HDDs asleep when unused (I think this is not possible in a raid setup). I liked the NAS because: the performance was good through gigabit LAN (enough for my needs) power consumption was good its a pretty small case and fits in one of my cupboards I disliked the NAS a bit because: it was a bit noisy, the Q07 case vibrated a good amount because of the HDDs. I switched the NAS off every evening I do not have a real backup of the data on the NAS, only the internal raid 1 as safety. I really dont want to loose my source trees under no circumstances, so I would really be sleeping better if I knew I had regular backups somewhere. Recently, the board seemed to have died, I can't boot anymore. Thus, I was thinking about a redesign of my NAS (I still have to find out what parts are broken, I probably need to replace the mainboard and SSD. HDDs seem to be okay). First of all, I was wondering what other users have as backup for their NAS? Are you actually using a second NAS, and regularly copying over the data to have it safe? Or is there any better solution to this? I was thinking about getting a cheap NAS like the synology DS112j with only one disk, and use rsync or something similar to regularly copy data over to the second NAS (wake the second NAS upon start, shut it down after copy). Although this approach seems somewhat weird, It would have the benefit (?) that I could use a single disk instead of raid in the main NAS, and put the disk asleep when idle, and have the NAS running 24/7 with low energy consumption (I found no way to do this with a gmirror setup). Is there any recommended backup solution for a small NAS? Then I was thinking about a different raid setup. Since I have to buy a new mainboard as well as SSD, I might as well switch over to a i3 board with more ram, and also switch to ZFS. I am not familar with ZFS, I've never used it, but I read and hear much about it. Would it be viable to set up a ZFS storage with only 2 disks? Can I easily extend this storage with more disks, once I choose to add some? I could maybe get a new case like the Fractal Design Array R2 which has more 3,5" slots. I could as well get another 2 disks, but I would prefer sticking with the existing 2 for enegery/heat/noise reasons. Should I go for a ZFS storage or stick to my gmirror setup? I would also like to keep freebsd as operating system, and also I dont need any web gui or something (that is, I dont need/want to use FreeNAS or Openfiler etc). Does anyone maybe have a sample setup in use so I can compare energy consumption/noise/software setup? Any guidance towards the NAS of my dreams (silent, low energy, safe w/ backups) much appreciated.

• IIS6 Sending a 404 for ".exe" files.

  Recently a bunch of files I had setup for download via IIS6's web server stopped working. They are a number of setup files ending in ".exe" and were working prior to a few months ago. I have the file permissions set properly, and even enabled browsing in IIS to determine that the paths are indeed correct. I'm not sure if it is related, but the directories with a period stopped working as well. ex: "~/download/ApplicationName/0.9/AppName-setup-0.9.123b2.exe" When I rename the directory to say 0_9 the browsing works, but the file itself delivers a 404 message from IIS. For now, I've setup FileZilla FTP for anonymous access to these files, but would prefer to continue using IIS. I've considered creating an HTTP handler to serve the .exe files, but would really prefer a configuration solution. I just can't figure out why it isn't working, as all the settings are correct. Directory is setup for read access. "Everyone" has read permissions on the files themselves, and the directory browsing (aside from the folder "0.9" to "0_9" rename) shows the files.

• Restore access to Cisco Connect after changing router settings

  I have recently bought Cisco Valet Plus (M20) wireless router (which I recognize now was a mistake, but nevermind). It has two setup options - Cisco Connect software and web-based setup. Cisco Connect software allows changing very small set of settings, web-based setup allows access to almost all settings, except settings for guest network. The problem is that when I use web-based setup, Cisco Connect after some changes refuses to talk to the router, so I can't change guest settings anymore (since web interface doesn't allow to change them). It must be because of some config parameter not matching or some password set wrong - but I don't know where Cisco Connect stores them. So, does anybody have any idea how to make Cisco Connect talk to the router again once I changed the settings through the web interface?

• What's the best way to create a static utility class in python? Is using metaclasses code smell?

  Ok so I need to create a bunch of utility classes in python. Normally I would just use a simple module for this but I need to be able to inherit in order to share common code between them. The common code needs to reference the state of the module using it so simple imports wouldn't work well. I don't like singletons, and classes that use the classmethod decorator do not have proper support for python properties. One pattern I see used a lot is creating an internal python class prefixed with an underscore and creating a single instance which is then explicitly imported or set as the module itself. This is also used by fabric to create a common environment object (fabric.api.env). I've realized another way to accomplish this would be with metaclasses. For example: #util.py class MetaFooBase(type): @property def file_path(cls): raise NotImplementedError def inherited_method(cls): print cls.file_path #foo.py from util import * import env class MetaFoo(MetaFooBase): @property def file_path(cls): return env.base_path + "relative/path" def another_class_method(cls): pass class Foo(object): __metaclass__ = MetaFoo #client.py from foo import Foo file_path = Foo.file_path I like this approach better than the first pattern for a few reasons: First, instantiating Foo would be meaningless as it has no attributes or methods, which insures this class acts like a true single interface utility, unlike the first pattern which relies on the underscore convention to dissuade client code from creating more instances of the internal class. Second, sub-classing MetaFoo in a different module wouldn't be as awkward because I wouldn't be importing a class with an underscore which is inherently going against its private naming convention. Third, this seems to be the closest approximation to a static class that exists in python, as all the meta code applies only to the class and not to its instances. This is shown by the common convention of using cls instead of self in the class methods. As well, the base class inherits from type instead of object which would prevent users from trying to use it as a base for other non-static classes. It's implementation as a static class is also apparent when using it by the naming convention Foo, as opposed to foo, which denotes a static class method is being used. As much as I think this is a good fit, I feel that others might feel its not pythonic because its not a sanctioned use for metaclasses which should be avoided 99% of the time. I also find most python devs tend to shy away from metaclasses which might affect code reuse/maintainability. Is this code considered code smell in the python community? I ask because I'm creating a pypi package, and would like to do everything I can to increase adoption.

At first, I was trying to install it using setup.py. But it is only copied in python lib dir, no icon, no desktop file installed. Then I tried to follow this guide, but I ended up with package without icon and it was of bad quality, but most important of all, it does not use setup.py, and it was pretty complicated.   I'm in the process of setting up my own name servers using BIND9, however I want to visualize the name server setup in relation to registrars and other name servers. Say I have a domain www.mydomain.com I setup my 2 name servers: ns1.mydomain.com - 192.168.0.1 ns2.mydomain.com - 192.168.0.2 1) How does the world know that my name servers are now at ns1.mydomain and ns2.mydomain. I read about setting up glue records at my registrar. Could you please elaborate on this, i.e. once i setup these glue records, can I now use my name servers in NS records for any other domain? For e.g. NS records for www.otherdomain.com - ns1.mydomain.com/ns2.mydomain.com 2) Given I setup the glue records as mentioned above, do I "have to" update mydomain.com NS records to point to my name servers? Can I keep mydomain.com NS records pointing to my registrars name servers, however use ns1.mydomain.com/ns2.mydomain.com as name servers for any other domain I own? Thanks

Now I want to give FTP access for an incoming user, but point them to /var/www/[domain] and have them come in as something like user "ftpuser" but want this to translate to user "www-data" so that web permissions will be correct. What is the technique to do this?

• VLAN Tagging Traffic on Cisco Switch

  I have a situation where I'm setting up multiple VLANS on a pfSense firewall on the same physical interface for a client. So in pfSense, I now have VLAN 100 (employees) and VLAN 200 (students - student computer lab). Downstream from pfSense, I have a Cisco SG200 switch, and coming off of the SG200 is the student lab (running on a Catalyst 2950. Yes, that's old, but it works, and this is a poor nonprofit we're talking about). What I'd like to do is tag everything on the network as VLAN 100, except for the student computer lab. Earlier today when I was on-site with the client, I went into to the old Catalyst 2950, and assigned all of its ports to access VLAN 200 (switchport mode access vlan 200) without setting up a trunk on the Catalyst or on the SG200. Looking back on it, I now understand why internet in the lab broke. I reverted the lab back to the default VLAN1 (we're still running on a different firewall - we haven't deployed pfSense -, and the traffic is still separated physically). So my question is, what do I need to do in order to properly deploy this scenario? I believe the correct answer is: Ensure VLANs 100 and 200 are setup in pfSense, and that DHCP is operating correctly (on separate subnets) Setup a trunkport VLAN that allows both 100 & 200 traffic, and plug that port directly into pfSense. Setup a VLAN 200 trunkport on the SG200 (It's not running iOS, but if it were, the command would be switchport trunk native vlan 200), which will then plug into the Catalyst 2950. Setup a VLAN 200 trunkport on the Catalyst 2950 (that is plugged into the SG200 VLAN200 port with the same command - switchport trunk native vlan 200) Setup the rest of the ports on the old Catalyst 2950 in the lab to be access ports on VLAN200. Is there anything that I'm missing, or do I need to tweak any of these steps, in order to properly segment the network traffic?

• Fix: Cant Change or Remove Visual Studio 2008 from DVD

  If you installed Visual Studio 2008 on a 64-bit operating system, you may have trouble when you try ad add or remove functionality by inserting the disk (or remounting the ISO image).  I believe this is because of the path used to install the 32-bit Visual Studio program.  When you run the setup.exe off of the disk, you get this: Clicking on Change or Remove Visual Studio 2008 brings up this dialog: But not long after it appears, it disappears to be replaced with: Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Setup A problem has been encountered while loading the setup components.  Canceling setup. • Multiple displays using AMD drivers

  I am currently running a dual display setup with nVidia 8800GTS video card, on a Ubuntu 12.10 box. The current setup uses nVidia TwinView to render the image on a 1920x1200 display and 1600x1200 one. I'm planning to add a third, 1280x1024 display to the setup. The change will require me to upgrade my GFX card to one supporting triple displays. I'll probably go with Sapphire Radeon 7770 (FLEX edition, to avoid additional active DP-DVI adapters). Before I invest in new GFX I wanted to ask - how well the AMD drivers will support such a setup. It does not matter whether it's fglrx or the OSS ones. If I remember correctly, when running Fedora on a Radeon x800, I had 'void' areas above and below the working area on my second display. The desktop was rendered in 1920+1280 width and 1200 height (which left 176px of vertical space accessible for my cursor and windows but not displayed on the screen - I'd prefer to avoid that). It may have very well been my misconfiguration back then. Generally, are there any solutions from AMD on par with TwinView? Or is it a non-issue at all? Also, I'm wondering about the usual stuff - hardware h264 decoding support, glitch-free flash support, any issues with Compiz/Unity?

• Installing Ubuntu Server 12.04 as a software RAID 1 mirror fails to boot

  I'm installing a few new Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS servers, and they have two 512 GB SSDs. I want them to use software RAID 1 mirroring, so I was following this document religiously step by step: https://help.ubuntu.com/12.04/serverguide/advanced-installation.html To summarize the above official documentation: to set up a software RAID 1 mirror in Ubuntu Server, you choose manual partitioning during the setup, and do this on each drive: "swap" partition of roughly RAM size "physical volume for RAID" partition for remaining drive size After that, you set up the RAID 1 mirror using the RAID partitions on drive A and B, make it ext4 and containing the root filesystem partition. Setup continues from there just fine. One caveat: I was completely unable to select the "physical volume for RAID" as bootable. When I tried to do that in setup, it had no effect: I could press enter on the "make bootable" option all day long and nothing would ever change. However, after install successfully completes, I have a big problem: the system won't boot! I get Reboot and Select proper boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key What did I do wrong? Why can't I mark that "physical volume for RAID" partition bootable during Ubuntu Server setup? Is there some way for me to make the physical volumes for RAID bootable after the fact, perhaps from a live CD or something?

My setup is: Cobbler server: openSUSE 12.3, cobbler 2.2.2 (from openSUSE repos) Imported distros: Centos 6.5, Red Hat 6.5, Red Hat 7.0, openSUSE 13.1 Target Machine: VMs in a Windows 7 Virtualbox Systems provisioning works OK, but I have some problems. The first one is that cobbler does not honor the "pxe_just_once: 1" setting. When the setup of the target OS is finished, after the reboot the target systems continues to PXE boot! How can I find the problem and fix it? Note that I have synced and restarted cobbler a couple of times, but the problems persists.

  I post here because I am using Ubuntu but this is probably an hardware problem. Since I bought my new setup with AMD Athlon(tm) II X4 635 Processor and asus m4a89td pro/usb3 motherboard with ecc ram I have stuttering on videos. I was using ubuntu 11.10 now ubuntu 12.10. • Accessing WindowsXP shared printer from macbook?

  My new printer is setup on WindowsXP, it works and it is configured as a shared printer. I then setup a printer from Mac OSX 10.6.3 using the approved driver from the setup CD. I browsed for the printer via the network. When I send a test page, it queues, but never prints. Its as if the driver thinks the printer is local to the mac and just never finishes printing. THe configuration shows as: smb://dragoneye/CanonMP2 Where dragoneye is the name of the Windows XP server and the CanonMP2 is the little multi-purpose printer. My other Windows' CPU can setup and print. Is this a known problem or am I missing a setting??

• Ubuntu update deleted entries from grub

  My computer currently has Fedora, Ubuntu, and Windows installed. I just updated Ubuntu 12.04, and on restarting, the Fedora entry was gone from GRUB. Ubuntu and Windows remained, though. I have looked at these threads: Fedora login gone after Ubuntu updates on a dual boot http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=279221 GRUB's menu.lst deleted after a kernel update However, I cannot figure out how to mount the drive as suggested. It does not appear in the list on the left side of nautilus as shown in the links above. I also tried running the following as suggested above: sudo grub-install /dev/sdX sudo update-grub But this gave scary errors: /usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Attempting to install GRUB to a partitionless disk or to a partition. This is a BAD idea.. /usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Embedding is not possible. GRUB can only be installed in this setup by using blocklists. However, blocklists are UNRELIABLE and their use is discouraged.. /usr/sbin/grub-setup: error: will not proceed with blocklists. The highlighted drive below is where Fedora lives. Thanks for any help reversing Ubuntu's decision to delete this from GRUB.
