• What are the limitations of a STA thread in compare to MTA threads ?

  If we make a thread STA like this: Thread.SetApartmentState(STA); then it cannot run code marked with [MTAThread] attribute. We have seen [STAThread] in windows and console applications but I have never seen code with [MTAThread] attribute and don't know which .NET libraries use this attribute. My question is what are the limitations of a thread with apartment state set to STA, in compare to threads with MTA apartment state (natural .NET threads) ?

• jQuery fadeIn fadeOut pause on hover

  I have a little jQuery snippet that will fadeIn and fadeOut a group of divs over a select interval. I now need to pause this fadeIn fadeOut on hover, then resume on mouse out. Any help is appreciated. Here is the relevant code.   I'm getting an inexplicable error with an ADO command in VB6 run against a SQL Server 2005 database. When I make the parameters adParamInputOutput, then I get this: declare @p1 int set @p1=default declare @p2 datetime set @p2=default exec ErrorAlertCollect @ErrorAlertID=@p1 output,@CreateTime=@p2 output select @p1, @p2 Running that as a separate batch yields: Msg 156, Level 15, State 1, Line 2 Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'default'. Msg 156, Level 15, State 1, Line 4 Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'default'. What the heck? SQL Server doesn't support this kind of syntax. You can only use the DEFAULT keyword in the actual SP execution statement. I should note that removing the extra single quotes from the above statement makes the SP run fine. ... Oh my. I just figured it out. I guess it's worth posting anyway.

Firebug lists all the class items for mainNavSelected, but has them all crossed out. What am i missing to replace the class of this element?

I am trying to do the following: When a user types http://www.example.com/csc/alabama/ I need to pull info from http://www.example.com/csc/index.php?state=alabama I thought it should be this Options +FollowSymLinks RewriteEngine On RewriteRule ^csc/([^/]*)$ /csc/index.php?state=$1 [L] I keep getting a 404 error. On a side note, I would like to be able to do this with a generic sub-directory, so that csc could be abc or anything else but this is not the priority.

• iOS: Gesture recogniser for smooth scrolling and flicking a View

  I am building an iPad app where I needed to allow resizing views functionality using divider view provided between two views. This divider view is just a 20px height view between two half screen content views - please refer attached images. When user scrolls this divider view up or down, both content views changes their sizes appropriately. I have extended UIView and implemented this using touchMoved delegate as code given below in touchesMoved delegate. It works fine. The only thing is missing with TouchMoved is you can't flick divider view to top or bottom directly. You have to scroll all the way to top or bottom! To support flicking the view I have tried UIPanGestureRecognizer but I don't see smooth scrolling with it. When I handle split position change in UIGestureRecognizerStateChanged state, just touching divider view flick it to top or bottom. Handling split position change in UIGestureRecognizerStateEnded does the same but I don't see content view resizing with dividerview scrolling! Could someone please tell me how could I achieve both smooth scrolling of divider view with resizing content views(like touchMoved) and flicking the view. Any alternative approach would also fine.   Chapter 3 of jQuery Novice to Ninja starts with a section about animating CSS properties, and its first example suggests the following code should expand padding and add a couple of borders to every paragraph in a page: $('document').ready(function() { $('p').animate({ padding: '20px', borderBottom: '3px solid #8f8f8f', borderRight: '3px solid #bfbfbf' }, 2000); }); However, while the code indeed works with the jQuery 1.4 library included in the downloadable examples archive for the book, it only animates padding when used alongside jQuery 1.6, forgetting the shorthand CSS properties for border-bottom and border-right altogether. What happened in the transition between 1.4 and 1.6, causing the removal of this functionality? Has it been placed in some plugin? Is it possible to run this code as it's written and get back the border animation? If not, how would you animate border properties using jQuery 1.6?

• Winform not scrolling when drawing objects on it

  Hello All, C#3.0,.net framework 3.5 I am drawing ( using the draw method in the graphics class) a lot of solid rectangles on a windows form vertically. The form starts at 500 x 500 px and the rectangles are only drawn at runtime after data is downloaded from the net -and the number of rectangles depends on the download so I do not know it upfront. So only a few rectangles are drawn as the size of the form is fixed. So I googled/Binged ( lest someone suggest I do that) and found a few tips but they don't work in this case -like setting the forms AutoScroll property to true or trying double buffering.I also tried to draw on a listbox control and set it's scroll property etc...but no dice. I'm guessing there is no way to display , say 200 rectangles vertically on a windows form using draw. I need some other solution... any ideas please. Maybe a list of pictureboxes and then populate each picturebox with the solid color ? Thanks

• Why doesn't CSS support constants?

  CSS has never supported constants or variables directly. Whenever I'm writing code like this: span.class1 { color: #377fb6; } div.class2 { border: solid 1px #377fb6; /* Repeated color */ } I wonder why such a seemingly simple feature has never made it into the standard. What could be hard about implementing a scheme whereby we could avoid repetition, something like this: $theme_color1: #377fb6; span.class1 { color: $theme_color1; } div.class2 { border: solid 1px $theme_color1; } I know there are workarounds, like using a class for each color or generating CSS code from templates, but my question is: given that CSS is so rich and complex, why weren't CSS constants ever introduced?

• C# Custom Brush - I want two gradients chaining them together.

  I am making a bar chart and I want two separate gradients for each bar. First I want a gradient to go from top to bottom solid red to transparent red. I want to paint over the top of that a gradient that goes from right to left, black to opaque. So - In the bottom left we should have; Bottom left - Alpha 0 Bottom right - Alpha 0 Top left - Alpha 255 Colour Red Top Right - Alpha 255 Colour Black So in effect I want to take a solid colour, add a left to right gradient to black then take the output of that and add a top to bottom gradient to transparency. All this and I want it to be in a single brush, is this even possible? Thanks!

• Disable AND Grey out an eclipse widget

  I have a org.eclipse.swt.widgets.Composite that I want to be able to enable/disable programatically. The org.eclipse.swt.widgets.Control.setEnabled(boolean enabled) method works fine, but it does not give any visual information that the widget(s) are disabled. What I would like to do is to have the disabled state mean the widgets are greyed out. Right now they just enter a weird state where the user is unable to click or perform any action on them.

• How do I draw a graduated border on a polygon using GDI+ via C#/WinForms?

  I have polygons of various shapes and sizes. They have a solid fill and currently a solid border. I would like to give the polygons a gradient on their edge to soften them. So far I've tried using a Pen with a LinearGradientBrush and whilst the effect it produces is very interesting it's most definitely not what I want ;) I've looked through the System.Drawing.Drawing2D namespace but there didn't seem to be any other classes that would be applicable for this purpose. I've had a search around and the articles that I can find are mostly about creating borders for rectangles, which are mush easier, or are irrelevant. So to summarize, does anyone have a way of drawing a gradient border in on a polygon using GDI+?

• Is it ok to perform DB operation on UI thread?

  I am using a database to persist the state of a search form. I am using the onPause method to persist the data and the onResume method to restore it. My opinion is that restoring and persisting state should be a blocking operation so I plan to perform the database operations on the UI thread. I know this is generally discouraged but the operations should be quick and I think if they were done asynchronously they could lead to inconsistent UI behaviour. Any advice
