  • script to su with password in script without root

    I have scripted a process that involves updating symbolic links on files located on 3 different machines. On those machines exists 4 users each, who each need to have these links updated. Using su, is there a way to pass the password argument to the command on a single line, without invoking sudo as the users will not have admin rights? My only alternative solution at this point is to ssh around, however I would like to be able to do this without hardcoding in a bunch of hosts/ips.

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 Firewall - Interface specific rules

    I'm trying to define per interface rules, much like it was in Server 2003. We will be replacing our old 2003 server with a new 2008 R2 server. The server runs IIS and SQL Server. It's a dedicated server at the hosting company. We use a OpenVPN connection from the office to access SQL server, RDesktop, FTP and other administrative services. Only http and ssh is listening on the public interface. On the old server running 2003, I was able to define global rules for http and ssh, and allow other services only on the vpn interface. I can't find a way to do the same on 2008 R2. I understand that there is the Network Location Awareness service, firewall rules are applied according to the current network location. But I don't understand the purpose of this on a server. The only close solution I found is to set the scope on the firewall rule and restrict remote ip addresses to the private subnet of the office. But the ports will still be listening on the public interface. So how can I restrict a firewall rule to the connections coming from the vpn interface ? A note on this page states that scoping a rule to an interface does not exist anymore: In earlier versions of Windows, many of these command accepted a parameter called interface. This parameter is not supported in the firewall context in Windows Vista or later versions of Windows. I can't believe that they simply decided to remove a core firewall functionality that every firewall has. There must be a way to restrict a rule to an interface. Any ideas ? I'm still unable to find an adequate solution to my problem. So for now, my workaround is this: Administrative services listen on VPN IP address Firewall rules restrict the scope to the local IP address of VPN Public services listen on all interfaces, no scope restriction on firewall rules This is not optimal, if I change the IP address of the VPN, I need to edit the firewall rules too. It won't be the case if the rules were bound to the interface.

  • Gentoo box can't cURL or ping after restarting net.eth1

    Hi all, the following is completely baffling me. We currently have a gentoo box which acts as our LAMP, DNS, DHCP server. This is assigned a static IP on the network. This server is connected directly to the internet via a BT BusinessHub Router. The server is also connected to a patch panel/switch port which connects the remaining office (around 10 PC's) to the server. Everything has been plain sailing until the other day when the server was restarted. For some reason now only portions of network accessibility is available depending on which ethernet device was last restarted. Restarting net.eth0 allows the office server to cURL, ping, etc but stops all networked PC's from accessing the internet. Then restarting net.eth1 restores all internet to the network but stops the server from curling, pinging, etc again. However, even when the server can't ping, curl, etc, I can still remote SSH and remote MySQL connect from the server command line to other external servers that we own.     I'd like to be sure that cpanel/WHM is definitely NOT going to automatically update my PHP to 5.3 (it will cause all sorts of errors for legacy code). So, please let me know where I should look (either in WHM control panel or via SSH) in order to satisfy myself that PHP definitely won't get upgraded to 5.3 without my say-so?

Currently I'm using this: /sbin/iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o eth0 -j SNAT --to-source IP; and it works well, but it redirects everything and when I make backups over SSH backup it's failing.     Is there a possibility to redirect all traffic to specified hosts behind NAT? For example i have a server, a domain "mydomain.com" and 3 hosts behind NAT. I wish to configure 3 subdomains: host1.mydomain.com host2.mydomain.com host2.mydomain.com and each of them to redirect all ports to specified host in local net. That redirection should provide funcionality like this: http://host1.mydomain.com (can be achieved using apache) ssh [email protected] (???) and other protocols on diferent ports Thanks for any help.

  • isa 2006 blocks outgoing traffic with no rule specified

    I've created a rule near the top, allowing all outgoing traffic from "All Users" from specified IP range to external network. However, connections are blocked sometimes for no apparent reason. For example, one attempt to ssh to an external server would fail, and another immediatelly after that - won't. to the same server! logging shows thoose failed connections as denied, but "rule" column is blank. any suggestions?

  • How to allow unprivileged apache/PHP to do a root task (CentOS)

    I am setting up a sort of personal dropbox for our customers on a CentOS 6.3 machine. The server will be accessible thru SFTP and a proprietary http service base on PHP. This machine will be in our DMZ so it has to be secure. Because of this I have apache running as an unprivileged user, hardened the security on apache, the OS, PHP, applied a lot of filtering in iptables and applied some restrictive TCP Wrappers. Now you might have suspected this one was coming, SELinux is also set to enforcing. I'm setting up PAM to use MySQL so my users in the web application can login. These users will all be in a group that can use SSH only for SFTP and users will be chrooted to their own 'home' folder. To allow this SELinux wants the folders to have the user_home_t tag. Also the parent directory needs to be writable by root only. If these restrictions are not met SELinux will kill the SSH pipe immediately. The files that need to be accessible thru both http and SFTP so I have made a SELinux module to allow Apache to search/attr/read/write etc. to directories with the user_home_dir_t tag. As sftp users are stored in MySQL I want to setup their home dirs upon user creation. This is a problem since Apache has no write access to the /home dir, it's only writable by root since it's required to keep SELinux and OpenSSH happy. Basically I need to let Apache do only a few tasks as root and only within /home. So I need to somehow elevate the privileges temporarily or let root do these tasks for apache instead. What I need to have apache do with root privileges is the following. mkdir /home/userdir/ mkdir /home/userdir/userdir chmod -R 0755 /home/userdir umask 011 /home/userdir/userdir chcon -R -t user_home_t /home/userdir chown -R user:sftp_admin /home/userdir/userdir chmod 2770 /home/userdir/userdir This would create a home for the user, now I have an idea that might work, cron. That would mean the server needs to check for users that have no home every minute, then when creating users the interface would freeze for an average of 30 seconds before the account creation can be confirmed which I do not prefer. Does anybody know if something can be done with sudoers? Or any other idea's are welcome... Thanks for your time!

    I have a VPS, until now I used the default root user for SSH access and everything. For security reasons I'd like to use a different user for root, terminal access and sudo operations. So I created another user, gave him the sudo and every other perm. The problem is that all the system files belongs to root. What happens if I set PermitRootLogin No for root? Those files wouldn't be editable by the new root user!

  • slow interactive response time

    VMWare ESXi4 with 2 VM's (FreeBSD-amd64). When doing a reboot on one of the VM's, the reboot is done in normal speed, but after that, the interactive response time on the other gets very slow: pressing return at the command prompt, takes serveral seconds to be exectuted. SSH-ing to the VM machine takes a long time before you are logged in. Only after 20 minutes or so, the situation is normalized. What's the reason and how to remedy?
