• A Virtual(Box) Christmas!

  Hello and merry Christmas everybody!Yes. This year, it's a v4.0 Xmas! VirtualBox just came out with a new major version release. Version 4.0 is available at : http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads ... and of course, it's open source, and it's free. And I suggest (strongly) that you also download the free Extension Pack from the same page... Brings USB 2.0 emulation and more!I upgraded the version on my Solaris Express (get that from : http://www.oracle.com/solaris/index.html and follow the Download Solaris Express link on the right) laptop (pfexec pkgrm SUNWvbox and then pfexec pkgadd -d the .pkg in the compressed archive file, and install the extensions from the VBox GUI once it's launched). If you are on an old fashion OS without proper RBAC, replace pfexec by sudo. Which you can also do on Solaris if you really want to. :)I tell you, it's Christmas, for sure!Merry VBox!Gilles.

• Why is this by passing the SUDO password?

  I have a bash script I am using to automate a SVN checkout. The contents of the file were: #!/bin/bash cd /var/www-cake sudo svn checkout file:///usr/local/svn/bash_repo/repo/ Then when I double click the file it would ask me what to do, I would click the button "Run In Terminal" and then a terminal would pop up and ask me for the SUDO password. I would enter it, the script would execute and the terminal would close. I wanted to give some sort of indication that the script ran successfully so I edited my file to look like: #!/bin/bash cd /var/www-cake sudo svn checkout file:///usr/local/svn/bash_repo/repo/ echo "Head revision has been pushed to live server" I expected the terminal to now stay open and tell me the message afterwards. To my surprise it now opens and immediately closes. The script does execute and I no longer have to put in the SUDO password. Is this right? I do not understand why this is happening, seems like a security issue.

• Do ASP.Net Web Forms actually produce ADA compliant HTML? Does the ASP/AJAX toolkit undermine the goal of ADA compliance?

  I'm trying to convince my employer to let us use the Microsoft ASP/AJAX toolkit since it simplifies the implementation of many controls. However they have rejected the idea on the grounds that it produces "AJAX code" which is not ADA compliant. However the same employer requires webpages to be written in ASP.NET Web Forms which, as far as I can tell from the source, is very very far from ADA compliance. I am new to both web programming and ADA compliance. My questions are: Do ASP.Net Web Forms actually produce ADA compliant HTML? Will the ASP/AJAX toolkit undermine the goal of ADA compliance?

  I received the email like most of you about Jeff and crew stepping down and selling the blog to another company. That it is a long time associate and friend of the team we have all grown to know and love, I feel much better about the move. Who cares, Chris, you haven't blogged religiously in ages! I know, and its a crime. Blame life, Twitter, my kids, laziness or whatever else you can think of. I always tell myself I am going to make a comeback - - "Don't call it a comeback - I been here for years." But after a few posts I seem to lose my steam. Its hard to explain, hell, I can't explain it. • Folding at home refusing connection?

  I am having a slight problem. I love contributing to folding at home, if some of you dont know what it is, it's a program that downloads work from the stanford university servers, has your computer process it (takes about 12 hours for 1 assignment depending on the processor, and then uploads it back. The problem with mine is that when I run FAHControl in terminal, it says Error 111 connection refused. This doesnt happen when i run folding at home on windows. Can someone tell me how to fix this? Thanks.

• Where to draw the line between front end and back end

  I was recently contracted to develop a smarty theme for an automated SOHO phone answering service. The team who had built the backend wouldn't allow me access to any of the back end nor tell me anything about it, their smarty set up, smarty plugins, data base interface api, server set-up, nothing. Nor could I have access to the server nor a beta domain, basically zero co-operation. So I set up a local server with Smarty and built the template based on what I guessed would be their best practice, commented my code like crazy, wrote all the needed javascript, css, and template files. Then I sent them packaged to the backend team and hoped for the best. With half of a project team failing to cooperate or even communicate I am now concerned that they may reply saying that everything is wrong and they may refuse to implement the new front end. I'm curious to know if others encounter this type of situation and what you may have done to protect yourselves.

• Proper way to use a RenderTarget2D to draw multiple textures?

  In the process of trying to resolve a split screen issue, I've been trying to use a RenderTarget2D to draw a portion of my scene to a Texture2D, and then again to another Texture2D, but the end result of both Texture2D's is coming out the same. Can anybody tell me what I'm doing wrong? I have a blog that has PR 1 and it's subdomain "aaaa.domain.com" that "domain.com" is a blog server. and now i buy a domain "newdomain.com" i want tell google webmaster to redirect old subdomain to this new domain and load trafic to my new domane. but i can't access .htccss to redirect 301. all thing that i can do is put html code in the html . now how can i do this. when i use "Change of Address" in goole webmaster it say:"Restricted to root level domains only" . sorry for bad English.

• Ubuntu One API Java - how to use REST and AccessToken?

  I am writing a java app in eclipse that backups data to several consumer-cloud-services encrypted and redundant. So far, I successfully implemented the authentication process, as it is described in the documentation. At this point, I do not know how to proceed. The next step would be implementing the auth with the stored AccessToken and afterwars implementing upload/download/listing functionality through the REST API. I think I have to store the String oauth.getSerialized(). How do I authenticate with this String afterwards? This does not work e.g.: AuthenticateResponse oauth = api.authenticate(serialized); api.setAuthorizer(new OAuthAuthorizer(oauth)); Can someone tell me please, how I can use the REST API with java? There is no explanation or link in the developers area as far as I saw. And btw, I wasted at least one hour trying to fix errors, because some needed libraries are listet after the example code. :/

  Defect Seeding seems to be one of the few ways a development organization can tell how thorough an independent testing group is. I'm a fan of using metrics to help counter overconfidence biases, and drive discussions around facts. With that said, I haven't seen Seeding Defects used in practice. Are there best practices above and beyond what McConnell explained? Are there public examples where this has been done? In the absence of the above, any thoughts on why it hasn't been done more? • Blank Processes (?) in Natty Narwhal

  I've noticed that there a seemingly blank processes (no process name, no cmdline info, only an ID), which also appear to cause my CPU to be running like crazy. My fans are going pretty much full speed and I have no idea what to do. Restarting does not help. Whenever I try to kill the process IDs, nothing happens. It's like new blank processes are continuously being created. I am really surprised that I am able to write up this question without Firefox lagging like crazy (and trust me, it's not Firefox causing the issue, as far as I can tell).

  I never know where it's acceptable to post something like this, so please forgive if it's in the wrong place. I'm very interested in going further in to web development; I know a bit of javascript, a bit of php, and so forth, but I'm now seeing these services that will go from psd to wordpress for 200 bucks and I'm wondering how the hell is anyone able to compete with this? So I'm wondering if those more knowledgeable than me could tell me what areas are the least likely to be able to be outsourced, for 5 bucks to some kid in Uzbekistan( no offense to that kid).. do you think it's on the database management side, or maybe app development? ideas appreciated.

• Prevent shutdown when rsnapshot is running

  Since shutdowns during rsnapshot operation will lead to inconsistent/partial backups, I wonder how to delay the system shutdown while rsnapshot is active. The task is complicated by the fact that I need a solution which is compatible with non-expert users. I.e. I need to tell reliably to the user that he needs to wait until the process is finished and not to do a hard reset. Once this is the case shutdown should continue. A possible solution could be to replace the action of the window managers (mostly KDE) shutdown/restart/hibernate buttons by a script which first checks if rsync is active and shows a message if this is the case. But I do not know if this is possible in KDE.

• Unable to download microsoft excel files from a IIS SSL site

  The web master at my corporation added SSL to the web site and now none of my users can download Microsoft word and xcel files the sites generates. According to Microsoft the following must be down. Web sites that want to allow this type of operation should remove the no-cache header or headers. Typical of MS they don't tell you what to do, how to do it, or what the best practice is. The web master says its a web config setting. But all i can finds is <configuration> <appSettings/> <connectionStrings/> <system.web> <httpRuntime sendCacheControlHeader="false"/> and I don't know if this is the best way to achieve the result. I would greatly appreciate some advice on this subject.

• How to create Windows XP LiveUSB using Ubuntu to replace it

  I am using an Acer Aspire One netbook with no CD-disk drive, and would like to uninstall Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and install Windows XP in its place. The problem here is that I can't seem to find a program that can put the windows boot files on a USB drive from an ISO file. I have Ubuntu fully installed and have tried using unetbootin. When I tried booting from unetbootin I got a screen with a blue box that had the word "default" in it highlighted. underneath the box there was a countdown that said "will boot from default in 10" after the countdown finished the number would revert to ten and nothing would happen. Can someone tell me another program that would be useful for this please?

  One of my friends has just completed his college degree and is ready to join the programmers' world. Today he has two offers, one with new projects every time, and another with software maintenance. The remaining factors are not important to him, what he wants to know is which option is better? My experience goes with second option because my first job was the maintenance one and I could learn how my fellow programmers made mistakes while coding . But I soon switched to a new job which required me to create new project every time. I enjoyed both but I must admit that my first job has given me a more advantage today. But it's not necessary that my experience can give benefit to him. But I want to know what is general approach? If I have to give him final verdict on these two, what should I tell him? • Struck with a serious issue when upgrading to ubuntu 13.10 from 13.04

  I installed ubuntu 13.04 alongside windows xp professional. When I tried to upgrade to 13.10 from 13.04, it took some time to download and then it started cleaning the files and then message was displayed that xp cleaned (this msg was seen by my younger brother and then he cut the power off) . Now the computer when starts displays this screen and I dont know how to proceed. To anyone giving solution I would like tell you that I prefer xp over linux(personal reasons). So is there any way to get out of this problem, neithet I can open xp nor linux?
