• Re-enabling audio on an iMac

  Hello guys, I know Super User is not a 'tech support' forum, so I will try to make it short: my computer's sound does not work anymore. I have asked for support on the Apple board but I feel a bit on my own. To summarize, the Sound Panel of my iMac does not display any outgoing channel (headphones or internal speakers). It does not work on Windows either. Contrary to what it may seem, I have the feeling that it is not a hardware issue (and that GarageBand is somehow interfering). If you have an idea to solve the problem, please share. Making it work again is a lost cause without sending it back to Apple, so the question I'm asking is: What is the best workaround (cheap Firewire sound card?) for getting my sound back? Thanks.

Mac os X files are invisible. Plug in on mac: indexMac.html opens. Win files are invisible. I know that every usb stick can be read by both platforms.   Hay Guys. I'm using plesk with Qmail as an outgoing server. I've never used my plesk setup before to send emails. I usually use my ISP. I'm having a little trouble settng this up. I've created a simple email account, [email protected]. All is well, i setup my POP account in my mail client (apple mail) and i can receive mail. However i can't send any. These are the details im using smtp.mycrazydomain.com standard auth (i've tried SSL and non SSL) username: [email protected] password: mypassword However nothing has happened. Anyone got any ideas?

• Installing Sql Server 2005 SP2 - Getting error on analysis services component

  At first many of the components didn't install and I followed this workaround (fixing user/SID mappings in registry.) After that everything installed successfully except for analysis services. I am getting the exact same error message as before on analysis services. (Are there other users installed by sql server I'm not aware of perhaps?) Do you guys have any ideas? All of my searches seem to just point to that workaround above that I already did. • Programs minimized for long time takes long time to "wake up"

  I'm working in Photoshop CS6 and multiple browsers a lot. I'm not using them all at once, so sometimes some applications are minimized to taskbar for hours or days. The problem is, when I try to maximize them from the taskbar - it sometimes takes longer than starting them! Especially Photoshop feels really weird for many seconds after finally showing up, it's slow, unresponsive and even sometimes totally freezes for minute or two. It's not a hardware problem as it's been like that since always on all on my PCs. Would I also notice it after upgrading my HDD to SDD and adding RAM (my main PC holds 4 GB currently)? Could guys with powerful pcs / macs tell me - does it also happen to you? I guess OSes somehow "focus" on active software and move all the resources away from the ones that run, but are not used. Is it possible to somehow set RAM / CPU / HDD priorities or something, for let's say, Photoshop, so it won't slow down after long period of inactivity?

• clam anti-virus is slowing down my server performance

  Hey guys, I just installed clam av http://sourceforge.net/projects/php-clamav/ for scanning file uploads on my linux VPN running php. The problem is that for some reason just initiating the extension in the php ini file slows down my entire network. Regular requests such as changing pages that should take less than 1 second take 5. • Running game server and webserver on EC2

  Hey guys, I have a webhost, and an EC2 server (to run a game server on). The problem is that I want to access/modify the EC2's files with php admin programs. I looked into a lot of options to just have the webhost communicate with the EC2 server (ssh, etc), but none of them panned out. My question is if I were to install a lightweight webserver (think lighttpd) on my EC2 server, how badly would it hurt the game server's performance? I was leaning away from this solution, even though the webserver (on the EC2 server) wouldn't get many hits (less than a 100 a day). Thanks for your thoughts, Max

  I just received my new SQL Server from Dell. The server will be serve approximately 15 OLTP databases which average 10GB in size. Here are the basic specs: Dell PowerEdge R510 with up to 12 Hot Swap HDDs,LED Intel Xeon E5649 2.53GHz, 12M Cache, 5.86 GT/s QPI, 6 core (Quantity of 2) 48GB Memory (6x8GB), 1333MHz Dual Ranked RDIMMs for 2 Processors, Optimized PERC H700 Integrated RAID Controller, 1GB NV Cache 300GB 15K RPM SA SCSI 6Gbps 3.5in Hotplug Hard Drive (Quantity of 4) 600GB 15K RPM SA SCSI 6Gbps 3.5in Hotplug Hard Drive (Quantity of 6) My first thought was to use 3 arrays. OS - Raid 1 - (2)300GB T-Log - Raid 1 (2)300GB DB - Raid 5 (5) 600GB Backup - (1) 600GB - non-raided. However, I could also do the following after purchasing one more drive for backup. OS and T-Log - Raid 10 - (4)300GB DB - Raid 10 (6)600GB The hard drive space is not an issue as the databases are not that large. I'm just trying to optimize the speed of the applications using these databases. So, what would you guys recommend?

• Simple Workstation Imaging Solution?

  Hey guys, I need a fairly cheap imaging solution for Windows XP corporate desktops. Ideally, I'd be able to set up a desktop exactly as we want it, create an image, deploy this image to a server, then boot a new desktop to a CD/USB Drive/Network and quickly set up the workstation. Ideally, each computer would also have a unique workstation name. Any ideas? Right now I'm using a custom built Linux DD solution, but it's slow, not network-based, can't image multiple computers at the same time as there's only one copy on a USB drive, and can't uniquely name the computers. • Windows Disk I/O Analysis

  It appears that we are having a problem with the disk i/o speed on our Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition server (64-bit). As we were initializing a database that created two 1G tablespaces on 3 different machines, it became obvious that the two smaller machines (each 32-bit Windows 2003 Standard Edition with less RAM) killed the larger machine when creating the files. The larger machine took 10x as long to create the tablespaces than did the other machines. Now, I am left wondering how that could be. What programs or scripts would you guys recommend for tracking down the I/O problem? I think the issue may be with the controller card (all boxes are hardware RAID 10, but have different controller cards), but I would like to check the actual disk I/O speed as well, so I have some hard numbers to work with. Any help would be appreciated.

• Ideas for home media server with Dell laptop?

  Hi guys, We have an old Dell Inspiron laptop we don't use anymore and would look to turn it onto a media/backup server for music/pictures - and maybe documents/code. The laptop only has 40Gb of HD space but we can hook to it a USB external HD with an additional 80Gb. This is a very general question: - What OS should I put on it (more like, what flavor of Linux)? - What media/backup server software should I install on top of that? - How would you go about backing up to it? I need to back up computers on the same LAN, some have Windows, some OS X, some Linux. If you could point me to an all-in-one solution with a nice tutorial for non-sysadmin folks it would be greatly appreciated, thank you!!!

• Need IPSec help on Windows 2003

  Hey guys, I am trying to configure IPSec between a web and app server in our environment. I want all traffic between these two servers to use IPsec and be encrypted. These servers are on the same domain so i am currently using Kerebos for security, I have also tried pre-defined keys and nothing changed. When I try and ping between the servers I get "Negotiating IP Security" everytime. I have also confirmed that when I change "Require Security" to "Permit" everything works so IPSec is working, I believe its something with my security setup. Under the security tab both servers have the default 3DES keys first and then DES keys. I have also specified tunnel endpoints (the alternate server's IP). What am I missing? Thanks for any help..

• BASH function not escaping control characters

  Hey guys I have a function that I'm using to find stuff, but unfortunately anytime I pass it a control character ($intVal or testing : etc) it chokes. I was wondering what the fix was? I can understand that using $ or % or : etc in grep without escaping causes this issue, but since I'm passing it in by reference I'm not sure how to escape it... • My computer keeps crashing and I just want it FIXED

  So long story short, I had my brother build me a computer for my birthday last year. I saw how good his was (also built by him) so I decided I would have him build me one. About a month after this was all finished, my computer started crashing when I when run over 3 programs. For example, an online game, a music player (spotify), skype, and a browser with a few tabs open. The way it would crash is the screen will freeze and a buzzing noise will come from whatever audio device I am using (headset, speakers) I took it to a computer tech guy and he told me my cooling system was inadequate. SOOO he led me to buy a CORSAIR H75 Liquid cooling system. Everything was good for about a week, and now it just did the same thing again. I am so freaking over this guys and I really need some help figuring out what the heck is wrong, I dont care how long it takes, just please help me.

• Is there an easy way to read blu-rays on Windows?

  Some time ago, I bought my parents a computer dedicated to medias (mostly photographs and movies trough DLNA). My father asked me if he could read blu-ray on it, so I bought a blu-ray reader but I can't find a software to do the playback. I installed PowerDVD (a free version we got with a Blu-Ray) but it seems it now requires a (non-free) upgrade. Even if it were free, I hardly see my parent do the upgrade by themselves as they barely understand how computers work. I thought I would find a free software (something like VLC, but for blu-rays) but so far had no luck. Do you guys have a software to suggest that would solve my issues ? It should run on Windows Vista, shouldn't require an update every monday, or at least a free one. Thank you very much.

I ran the thorough scandisk check but still for that drive, the scandisk check is always performed no matter what.   Hey guys, could please anybody recommend some kind of kconfig generator that would trim modules and built-in stuff that is not needed according to current hardware ? The best I have found is this : http://lkml.org/lkml/2008/9/16/290 I don't care about compilation time and the amount of modules that are not built-in. I'm concerned about performance. I don't know how much memory and runtime is wasted on huge kernels with almost everything possible. I'm a java developer and I don't know what most of the modules and drivers are for.   Hey Guys, After installing vmware7, I tried to run a virtual machine with Mac OSX installed. When I tried to run this virtual machine I got an error message saying: Mac OS X is not supported with software virtualization. To run Mac OS X you need a host on which VMware Workstation supports hardware virtualization. I'v googled and found out that my processor (Intel Core 2 Duo E7500 Processor (2.93 GHz, 3 MB L2 cache, 1066 Mhz FSB)supports Hardware virtualization. Does anyone know how to enable this in order to get this virtual machine running?

  Hello Guys, I've a problem. Duplicity is perfect for backups, I love so much that can be able to do incremental diff tars, but ... when restoring duplicity seems don't apply same concept. Basically I need to restore only changed files (obviously after a full backup) but I can't figure how do that. When I try to restore a directory I get: Restore destination directory /Volumes/Data/Backups/Srv1 already exists. I need to backup a directory (and I don't have any problems in doing that) and setup a mirror on another machine. Thanks!

• Optimising bare-metal hypervisor installation

  what is the best way to install a bare metal hypervisor (i.e. to host multiple VM's)? I spoke to a friend and he is using a HP server to host all his VMs with VMware ESXi, but he installed the VMWARE esxi software on a flash card. He can then use his full hard disk capacity from each drive for the VMs. Is this a pretty standard setup when configuring a bare-metal hypervisor? How do you guys do it, and what is best?

• router cannot get ip address

  Hi guys, I have a linksys router WRT54G2 connected to a cable broadband. Just last week, everything was working perfectly - I would be able to connect my laptop to the internet using WiFi. However, starting last week, I suddenly lost my internet connection. At first I thought something was wrong with my ISP. However, when I tried connecting the cable directly to my laptop, I found out that there was no problem with the internet connection after all. It appears that it is only my router that cannot get IP address. I have already tried cloning my MAC address and reconfiguring my router using the setup CD, but nothing worked.
