• malloc:mmap(size=XX) failed (error code=12)

  I have a memory problem in an iPhone app, giving me a hard time. Here is the error message I get: malloc: * mmap(size=9281536) failed (error code=12) * error: can't allocate region I am using ARC for this app, in case that might be useful information. The code (below) is just using a file in the Bundle in order to load a core data entity. The strange thing is the crash happens only after more than 90 loops; while it seems to mee that since the size of the "contents" in getting smaller and smaller, the memory request should also get smaller and smaller. Here is the code, if any one can see a flaw please let me know.   I have two classes: public abstract class AbstractFoobar { ... } and public class ConcreteFoobar extends AbstractFoobar { ... } I have corresponding test classes for these two classes: public class AbstractFoobarTest { ... } and public class ConcreteFoobarTest extends AbstractFoobarTest { ... } When I run ConcreteFoobarTest (in JUnit), the annotated @Test methods in AbstractFoobarTest get run along with those declared directly on ConcreteFoobarTest because they are inherited. Is there anyway to skip them?

• Storing large numbers of varying size objects on disk

  I need to develop a system for storing large numbers (10's to 100's of thousands) of objects. Each object is email-like - there is a main text body, and several ancillary text fields of limited size. A body will be from a few bytes, to several KB in size. Each item will have a single unique ID (probably a GUID) that identifies it. The store will only be written to when an object is added to it. It will be read often. Deletions will be rare. The data is almost all human readable text so it will be readily compressible. A system that lets me issue the I/Os and mange the memory and caching would be ideal. I'm going to keep the indexes in memory, using it to map indexes to the single (and primary) key for the objects. Once I have the key, then I'll load it from disk, or the cache. The data management system needs to be part of my application - I do not want to depend on OS services. Or separately installed packages. Native (C++) would be best, but a manged (C#) thing would be ok. I believe that a database is an obvious choice, but this needs to be super-fast for look up and loading into memory of an object. I am not experienced with data base tech and I'm concerned that general relational systems will not handle all this variable sized data efficiently. (Note, this has nothing to do with my job - its a personal project.) In your experience, what are the viable alternatives to a traditional relational DB? Or would a DB work well for this?

Since tests can usually be run separately. So the result of Create may never be cleaned up by Delete.

  My problem is to calculate the data (string) that can fit into the given page size (in inches). I have an application which creates plain vanilla HTML report without using any reporting controls. Now I have to provide paging support in this report. the report is dynamic in nature i.e. columns are decided at run time. Depending upon the page width, I want to wrap columns in multiple lines. For example, if the page width is 8", i want to fit only first 'n' columns in first line and rest columns can be displayed in second line (or more lines if required). For this I need to calculate how much data can fit in a 8" wide line. Similarly, I want to calculate the height of data that can fit into the given height of page. To summarize, how can I calculate how much data can fit into the given page size in inches. Note: The calculation should also consider the font as it is decided at run time.

  HI, I upload my php testing script to online vps server just now. The script used to parse a big size XML file(about 4M, 7000Lines). But my IE explorer show the online error message below. Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 16777216 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 77 bytes) in /var/www/test/result/index.php on line 26 I am sure I already tested the php script on localhost successfully. Is there any configuration need be enable/modify on my VPS? Such as php.ini or some setting for apache server? I just verified there are about 200M memory usage are avaliable for my VPS.   Basically I have a tear down method that I want to log to the console which test was just run. How would I go about getting that string? I can get the class name, but I want the actual method that was just executed.   Hi, I was wondering if there was anything that provides test data for injecting into Nunit tests? I'm sure I came across something recently that does this but I couldn't find it again. Basically the idea is that I could use selenium and Nunit to create new customers within the system automatically.   If I have user defined exceptions in my code, I can't get Boost test to consider them as failures. For example, BOOST_AUTO_TEST_CASE_EXPECTED_FAILURES(MyTest,1) BOOST_AUTO_TEST_CASE(MyTest) { // code which throws user defined exception, not derived from std::exception. } I get a generic message: Caught exception: .... unknown location(0):.... It does not recognize this error as a failure since it is not a std::exception. So it does not honor the expected_failures clause. How do I enforce that the piece of code should always throw an exception? THis seems to be a useful thing to want. In case future code changes cause the code to pass and the exception is not thrown, I want to know that.

  Consider the following code: [Test] public void WidgetTest() { foreach (Widget widget in widgets) { Assert.AreEqual(0, widget.SomeValue); } } If one of the asserts fails, I will get a very unhelpful error message like the one below: 1) Test Failure : WidgetTest.TestSomeValue Expected: 0 But was: 1 at WidgetTest.TestSomeValue() So, the question is, how can I get NUnit to display more useful info, such as the name of the widget, or the iteration of the loop, etc? Even a line number would be more helpful, since this is run in automated manner and I'd like to be able to spot the failing assert without debugging into the code.

• Log your SQL in Rails application inside unit test

  I want to install a logger so that I can dump all executed SQL of my rails application. Problem is, such logger is associated with AbstractAdapter which initialized very soon under test mode, and thus cannot be set by my initializer code. I try to put ActiveRecord::Base.logger = MyCustomLogger.new(STDOUT) in the end of environment.rb like someone advised but it only works when being run in console environment (kicked by script/console), not when run under test mode. I wonder if there is any way to config such logger so that I will sure to be invoked under any environment (test, development, production, console)

  I am noting this strange behavior where one of my fields -- receive_empresa_test_info -- has worked fine though it's always been referred to as receive_empresa_info. In Functional Tests, though, the real field name is receive_empresa_test_info. What is going on here? Might this be some part of the Rails environment that I'm missing during testing?

• Best practices to test protected methods with PHPUnit

  Hello, I found the discussion on Do you test private method informative. I have decided, that in some classes, I want to have protected methods, but test them. Some of these methods are static and short. Because most of the public methods make use of them, I will probably be able to safely remove the tests later. But for starting with a TDD approach and avoid debugging, I really want to test them. I thought of the following: Method Object as adviced in an answer seems to be overkill for this. Start with public methods and when code coverage is given by higher level tests, turn them protected and remove the tests. Inherit a class with a testable interface making protected methods public Which is best practice? Is there anything else? It seems, that JUnit automatically changes protected methods to be public, but I did not have a deeper look at it. PHP does not allow this via reflection.
