  • Reducing CPU load to absolute minimum [on hold]

    I have had a couple of things gone missing I believe stolen in my shared apartment and want to run my laptop constantly with a webcam attached, running webcam surveillance software to record/ take pictures when motion is sensed. Id like to take whatever steps are necessary to be able to run the laptop constantly without the fan coming on, as its quite loud and even though it will be hidden it can be heard. Thus Id like to know what steps I can take to reduce CPU to the bare minimum for the laptop to boot up and run the camera software and send images via ftp / email when necessary. I have windows 7 installed, though I can reinstall it clean. Which are the windows services can I turn off, and more extreme disabling or measures of whatever kind which I can take. The OS would need to run the camera, wifi / networking. Thanks very much for any help.

    I am developing an application with different behavior depending on the arguments : "-config" starts a Gtk window to change options, start and close the daemon. "-daemon" starts a background process that does something every X minutes. I already know how to use fork/system/exec etc... But I would like to know the main logic of such application to : restart or refresh the daemon when configuration change. keep only one instance of the daemon. I have read that killing the daemon to restart it is not a clean way to do. How other applications do ? (ubuntuone, weather forecast, rss feed working with notification area) Thanks for your help. PS : I don't want to create a system-wide daemon, just a user application with a background process.

While it's running, I would like to do other things, which may involve logging out or disconnecting from the internet (my script runs network tests on various computers). Also application can spawn a lot of child processes (like as in aptitude update), so I need to affect both parent one (to make new children have new priority) and child ones (to bring the effect immediately, not after the child terminates) How can I apply "renice" or "ionice" or "schedtool" to already launched big application?

The taskmananger throws an "Access Denied" error, but I am logged on as administrator and I changed the user account of the service to administrator, too. I still get the "access denied" message when trying to change the priority. Any ideas what permission I need to do that?

    I am trying to start xampp when the ubuntu starts on ubuntu 9.10. I tried going to system-preferences-startup applications adding it there, but it didn't work. I surmised it was because it needs to be started as root. I know you can make a startup script some how, but I'm not sure how to do it. How can I make it start xampp when the computer boots, even without logging in? FYI, the command for starting it is sudo /opt/lampp/lampp start

  • How to prevent these executables from starting up?

    After removing the following executables from starting up, in the near future they reappear again: DDMService.exe: Re-enabled when visiting a DivX video online. DivXUpdate.exe: Re-enabled when visiting a DivX video online. GoogleUpdate.exe: Re-enabled task, I think by Google Chrome? I see no auto-update option. iPodService.exe: Re-enables after starting iTunes. iTunesHelper.exe: Re-enables after starting iTunes, useless on SSDs. Reader_sl.exe: Re-enables when updating Adobe Reader, useless on SSDs. It bores me that these processes keep popping back up, while my software functions well without them. I'm smart enough to update the software weekly through FileHippo so I don't need automatic updates. What can I do to never see these processes again? Even after reinstallation of those applications... A general solution is also welcome! :-)

  • Server freeze restarted quickly so how do I fiond what went wrong?

    I have a SQL SERVER DB running on a windows server 2008 (VMWare) Yesterday I could not RDP to it so I ended some RDP sessions which were left logged in. This seemed to solve the problem. However last night I learned that the DB was inaccessible and unresponsive to customers. My colleague checked the server but again is unable to create an RDP connection. He then restarted the server and since it has been fine. Looking at the CPU Readings of the Server it spiked up to 100% before the original RDP problem .After I ended the extra seeions uit again dropped down to normal levels however before the time of the customer complaint it had rose to 100% again - before it had to be restarted. Is there anyway I can investigate which processes may have caused the problem in the first place. Would there be some kind of memory dump from when it was restarted. I would prefer to find out what is wrong now instead of waiting until it happens again.

  • Kill all currently running cron jobs

    For some reason my cron job scripts aren't exiting cleanly and they're backing up my server. There are currently a couple hundred processes running for one of my users. I can use the following command to kill all processes by that user, but how can I simplify this to kill only crons? pgrep -U username | while read id ; do kill -6 $id ; done It would be dangerous to run the above command as is, correct? Wouldn't that kill mysql and other important things?

    Is there a way to make the background of Eclipse IDE text editor transparent? I would like to adjust the alpha transparency of the background, but have the text still be opaque. Perhaps there is a plugin that accomplishes this? I haven't seen any options under preferences. And my search on Google has ended in vain thus far, although I did find some nice color themes. Example (Textmate): Note that the text is still solid. This is important, since making the whole window transparent could cause text to bleed into the desktop wallpaper (or whatever is under Eclipse). On another side note, I'm using the latest version of Eclipse (Helios), on both Windows 7 and Fedora 14. I need to be able to capture the stdout, stderr, and exit code of the process, and I need to be able to see if a process exceeds it's allotted execution time.     I am trying to diagnose this exception. "System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80070008): Not enough storage is available to process this command. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070008) at System.Runtime.Remoting.RemotingServices.AllocateUninitializedObject(RuntimeType objectType) at System.Runtime.Remoting.RemotingServices.AllocateUninitializedObject(Type objectType) at System.Runtime.Remoting.Activation.ActivationServices.CreateInstance(Type serverType) at System.Runtime.Remoting.Activation.ActivationServices.IsCurrentContextOK(Type serverType, Object[] props, Boolean bNewObj) at Oracle.DataAccess.Client.CThreadPool..ctor() at Oracle.DataAccess.Client.OracleCommand.set_CommandTimeout(Int32 value) ... It does not look like any of the normal types of "storage" have hit any limits. The application is using about 400MB of memory, 70 threads, 2000 handles and the hard drive has many GB free. The machine is running Windows 2003 Enterprise server with 16GB of RAM so memory shouldn't be an issue. The application is running as a windows service so there are no GDI objects being used. Running out of GDI handles is a common cause of this exception. Database connections, commands & readers are all all wrapped with using blocks so they should be getting cleaned up correctly.

  • Windows services with windows forms in the same process

    Hello, I have a c# application that runs as a windows service controlling socket connections and other things. Also, there is another windows forms application to control and configure this service (systray with start, stop, show form with configuration parameters). I'm using .net remoting to do the IPC and that was fine, but now I want to show some real traffic and other reports and remoting will not meet my performance requirements. So I want to combine both applications in one. Here is the problem: When I started the form from the windows service, nothing happened. Googling around I've found that I have to right click the service, go to Log on and check the "Allow service to interact with desktop" option. Since I don't want to ask my users to do that, I got some code googling again to set this option in the user's regedit during installation time. The problem is that even setting this option, it doesn't work. I have to open the Log On options of the service (it is checked), uncheck and check again. So, how to solve that? How is the best way to have a windows service with a systray control in the same process, available to any user logging in? UPDATE: Thanks for the comments so far, guys. I agree it is better to use IPC and I know that it is bad to mix windows services and user interfaces. Even though, I want to know how to do that.

  • Long running stats process - thoughts on language choice?

    I am on a LAMP stack for a website I am managing. There is a need to roll up usage statistics (a variety of things related to our desktop product), and I initially tackled the problem with PHP (being that I had a bunch of classes to work with the data already). All worked well on my dev box which was using 5.3 Long story short, 5.1 memory management seems to suck a lot worse, and I've had to do a lot of fooling to get the long term roll up scripts to run in a fixed memory space. Our server guys are unwilling to upgrade php at this time. I've since moved my dev server back to 5.1 so I don't run into this problem again... For mining of mysql databases to roll up statistics for different periods and resolutions, potentially running a process that does this all the time in the future (as opposed to on a cron schedule), what language choice do you recommend? I was looking at python (I know it more or less), java (don't know it that well), sticking it out with php (know it quite well). Thanks for any suggestions. Josh

To deal with this first problem, I was using a loop. The full function I wrote is: (defun eval-all-sexps (s) (loop for x = (ignore-errors (read-from-string s)) then (ignore-errors (read-from-string (substring s position))) while x summing (or (cdr x) 0) into position doing (eval (car x)))) Now the second problem that showed up is that the function is called twice with a somewhat large input, first with valid but partial content, then with what looks like pieces of the remaining data. To solve this problem, I'm considering using a junk variable to hold up what remains from a loop and then concatenating it to the input of the next call, but I was wondering if you guys have any other suggestions on how to deal with such a problem more elegantly.     I am reading a csv file that has about has about 50,000 lines and 1.1MiB in size (and can grow larger). In Code1, I use String to process the csv, while in Code2 I use StringBuilder (only one thread executes the code, so no concurrency issues) Using StringBuilder makes the code a little bit harder to read that using normal String class. Am I prematurely optimizing things with StringBuilder in Code2 to save a bit of heap space and memory?   • WDK build-process hooks: need incremental build with auto-versioning

    I've previously gotten incremental builds with auto-versioning working in a team build setting for user-mode code, but now I'm dealing with the builds of WDK device drivers. It's a whole new ball-game. I need to know what extension point, or hook, is available in the WDK build that occurs after the driver has been selected to be incrementally built, but before it actually starts building the object files. More specifically, I have a .rc file that contains the version of the device driver. I need to update the version in that file ONLY IF the driver is going to be built anyway. If I bump the value in the .rc file prematurely, it will cause the incremental build to kick-off (that is bad). If I wait too long, then the incremental build won't see that I've changed the .rc file. Either way, I do need the WDK to realize that the new version I've placed into the .rc file needs to be built into a new .res file and linked. How do I do this? What suggested extension points should I play with? Is there a link-tutorial on the WDK build process that is particularly revealing regarding this topic?

    Scenario: I have a windows form that holds a DataGridWiew with 3 pre-defined columns. I have 3 variables declared outside the function and assigned to inside the function. I have read up on backgroundworkers but I am having trouble relating, because all examples seems to be of entirely different scenarios and most of them are overwelmingly complex. San some helpful pedagogic soul help me and others with a very basic example of how to get this to work in the simplest way possible. Thanks.
