• How do you splice out a part of an xvid encoded avi file, with ffmpeg? (no problems with other files)

  Im using the following command, which works for most files, except what seems to be xvid encoded ones /usr/bin/ffmpeg -sameq -i file.avi -ss 00:01:00 -t 00:00:30 -ac 2 -r 25 -copyts output.avi So this should basically splice out 30 seconds of video + audio, starting from 1 minute mark. It does START encoding at the 00:01:00 mark but it goes all the way to the end of the file for some reason, ignoring that I want just 30 seconds. The output looks like this. • How can I neatly embed Flash in a page in a way that is cross-browser compatible?

  When I receive Flash objects from my designer, it comes with an example HTML page which includes both <object> tags and <embed> tags as well as a whole heap of JavaScript. If I copy and paste this code in to my webpage, it works, but the code looks a mess (and there is so much of it!). If I remove the extra code and try either just <embed> or <object> on their own, it works in some browsers, but not others. Is there a neat, minimal method that works in all the major browsers?

  I need to select dynamic id using JQuery, and once I select it then I need to do some action on it. What I need to do is to create on click for that element. • Is it bad SEO to embed an img tag in the middle of a sentence?

  I recently received a web mockup that included a sidebar with a short paragraph of narrow text; a quote from a person. At the end of the quote, the mockup had a circular portrait of the person floated to the right, hanging off the edge of the block, with the text flowing around the edge of it. It looked like this, where "TEXT" is the text, and "o" is the portrait TEXTTEXTTEXTTEXTTEX TEXTTEXTTEXTTE TEXTTEXTTEXT ooooo TEXTTEXTTEXT ooooooo TEXTTEXTTEXT ooooooo ooooo The easiest way to do this would be to put the tag for the portrait somewhere in the markup of the text, and float it right. But the HTML will look like, in that case: TEXTTEXTTE<img src="..." style="float: right;">XTTEXTTEXT and I fear this would be bad for SEO. Does anyone know? The other option is putting the at the end, absolutely positioning it, and using manual line breaks -- which sucks for my responsive design.

• Login and redirect to user home page [migrated]

  The problem I can't currently solve is when a user logs in. They arrive at the site (index.php) and enter username and password, which gets submitted via a Post form back to index.php - if there are incorrect details then they get an error message. But if successful then I would like them to be taken to their user home page - but I can't do this! I am left presenting them with a link to the home page, which is more than a little clunky. Seems there must be an obviously solution - never seen a site before that didn't redirect! Not sure is the answer is PHp, HTML, or Javascript.

• General guidelines / workflow to convert or transfer video "professionally"?

  I'm an IT "professional" who sometimes has to deal with small video conversion / video cutting projects, and I'd like to learn "the right way" to do this. Every time I search Google, there's always a disaster for weird, low-maturity trialware, or random forums threads from 3-4 years ago indicating various antiquated method to do it. The big question is the following: What are the "general" guidelines and tools to transcode video into some efficient (lossless?) intermediary, for editing purposes, for the purpose of eventually re-encoding it after? It seems to me like even the simplest of formats and tasks are a disaster of endless trial & error, or expertise only known by hardened experts who have a swiss army kife of weird conversion tools that they use, almost as if mounting an attack against the project. Here are a few cases in point: Simple VOB files extracted from DVD footage can't be imported into Adobe Premiere directly. Virtualdub is an old software people keep recommending but doesn't seem to support newer formats. I don't even know how to tell with certainty which codecs a video has, and weather the image is interlaced or not, and what resolution and codecs I'm dealing with. Problems: Choosing a wrong interlace option which diminishes quality Choosing a wrong pixel aspect ratio (stretches the image) Choosing a wrong "project type" in Premiere causing footage to require scaling Being forced to use some weird program that will have any number of negative effects What I'm looking for: Books or "Real knowledge" on format conversions, recognized tools, etc. that aren't some random forum guides on how to deal with video formats. Workflow guidelines on identifying a format going from one format to another without problems as mentioned above. Documentation on what programs like Adobe Premiere can and can't do with regards to formats, so that I don't use a wrench as a hammer. TL;DR How should you convert or "prepare" a video file to ensure it will be supported by Premiere for editing? Is premiere a suitable program to handle cropping, encoding, or should other tools be used for this, when making a video montage from a variety of source formats? What are some good books to read that specifically deal with converting videos that use any number of codecs?

• Most standard / Best way to keep the same top menu among different web pages?

  What's the standard way to keep the same menu on top among different web pages without having to duplicate it on each page (I don't mean that it doesn't reload like when using frames and only loading the bottom part; I want the menu to scroll with the page when scrolling down, like this, this, this and pretty much every single web page that exists). I found this answer but the guy can't use Php and I can. Plus, I see several people giving different suggestions, but I assume there is a standard since pretty much every single web page in the whole web have a menu on top that stays the same among multiple pages . I'm just a newbie on web design (I can program Php and Html easily but I have no idea about standards and stuff like that since I'm self-taught guy ;)). What I would normally do is to include the menu with php but I'm not sure if this is the "standard".

I am struggling to find examples of sites that are using these technologies practically and that are not just a demo of something cool someone has managed to do using Canvas or CSS3 transforms or shapes. I am looking for sites that have a nice visual look but also take advantage of things like animation, scrolling and offset à la Silverback or the Canvas to create an interactive and I guess 'Flash-looking' site. • best practice for last-modified and created dates

  I have a website with a handful (currently 3; I anticipate about a dozen when it's complete) of static html pages. I'd like to include "created" and "last-modified" dates in the pages for the benefit of visitors who arrive a week or a month or a few years from now. I expect anyone who cares to be viewing the source, so I could do: <!-- created yyyy-mm-dd, last-modified yyyy-mm-dd --> but I'd like to use something more standard (and elegant). I've found one reference to last modified (but only a mention in the text, not an actual code reference, so I'm not positive how to properly implement it) but not created. Is there a proper way to display both (or at least one) of these dates?

• Fresh install of nginx causes browser to download index.html instead of opening it

  When I view this in Chrome, http://localhost:90 the file is downloaded instead of displayed in Chrome. This question has been asked a lot of times on SO, but about index.php files. My problem is a plain jane HTML file, not a PHP file. That hasn't been asked yet. I was hoping the solution would be similar, but I haven't been able to figure it out. Here's my example.com.conf: server { server_name localhost; listen 90; root /var/www/example.com/html index index.html location / { try_file $uri $uri/ =404; } } My index.html file contains only two words, no markup Hello World I think it's the mime.types. The mime.types file has the entry for html in it. This is a fresh nginx install. nginx -t reports "test is successful"

• Monitoring Html Element CSS Changes in JavaScript

For example, I have a some HTML element behavior plugins like a drop shadow that attaches to any HTML element, but I then need to be able to automatically keep the shadow in sync with the window if the  element dragged around the window or moved via code. Unfortunately there's no move event for HTML elements so you can't tell when it's location changes. So I've been looking around for some way to keep track of the element and a specific CSS property, but no luck. I suspect there's nothing native to do this so the only way I could think of is to use a timer and poll rather frequently for the property. The following code creates a box and uses the draggable (jquery.ui) plugin and a couple of custom plugins that center and create a shadow. Here's how I can set this up with the watcher: $("#box") .draggable() .centerInClient() .shadow() .watch("top", function() { $(this).shadow(); },70,"_shadow"); ... $("#box") .unwatch("_shadow") .shadow("remove"); This code basically sets up the window to be draggable and initially centered and then a shadow is added. The .watch() call then assigns a CSS property to monitor (top in this case) and a function to call in response. The component now sets up a setInterval call and keeps on pinging this property every time. When the top value changes the supplied function is called. While this works and I can now drag my window around with the shadow following suit it's not perfect by a long shot. The shadow move is delayed and so drags behind the window, but using a higher timer value is not appropriate either as the UI starts getting jumpy if the timer's set with too small of an increment. This sort of monitor can be useful for other things as well where operations are maybe not quite as time critical as a UI operation taking place. • Html Select List: why would onchange be called twice?

  I have a page with a select list (ASP.NET MVC Page) The select list and onchange event specified like this: <%=Html.DropDownList("CompanyID", Model.CompanySelectList, "(select company)", new { @class = "data-entry-field", @onchange = "companySelectListChanged()" })%> The companySelectListChanged function is getting called twice? I am using the nifty code in this question to get the caller. both times the caller is the onchange event, however if i look at the callers caller using: arguments.callee.caller.caller the first call returns some system code as the caller (i presume) and the second call returns undefined. I am checking for undefined to only react once to onchange, but this doesnt seem ideal, whcy would onchange be called twice? UPDATE: ok, found the culprit! ...apart from me :-) but the issue of calling the companySelectListChanged function twice still stands. The onchange event is set directly on the select as mentioned. This calls the companySelectListChanged function. ..notice the 'data-entry-field' class, now in a separate linked javascript file a change event on all fields with this class is bound to a function that changes the colour of the save button. This means there is two events on the onchange, but the companySelectListChanged is called twice? The additional binding is set as follows: $('.data-entry-field').bind('keypress keyup change', function (e) { highLightSaveButtons(); }); Assuming its possible to have 2 change events on the select list, its would assume that setting keypress & keyup events may be breaking something? Any ideas?

• jQuery AJAX Character Encoding Problem

  Hi everyone, I'm currently coding a French website. There's a schedule page, where a link on the side can be used to load another day's schedule. http://aquate.us/film/horaire.html (At the moment, only the links for November 13th and November 14th work) Here's the JS I'm using to do this: <script type="text/javascript"> function load(y) { $.get(y,function(d) { $("#replace").html(d); mod(); }); } function mod() { $("#dates a").click(function() { y = $(this).attr("href"); load(y); return false; }); } mod(); </script> The actual AJAX works like a charm. My problem lies with the response to the request. Because it is a French website, there are many accented letters. I'm using the ISO-8859-15 charset for that very reason. However, in the response to my AJAX request, the accents are becoming ?'s because the character encoding seems to be changed back to UTF-8. How do I avoid this? I've already tried adding some PHP at the top of the requested documents to set the character set: <?php header('Content-Type: text/html; charset=ISO-8859-15'); ?> But that doesn't seem to work either. Any thoughts? Also, while any of you are looking here...why does the rightmost column seem to become smaller when a new page is loaded, causing the table to distort and each <li> within the <td> to wrap to the next line? How can I html encode the textarea on post ? I don't want to cancel the validation. Is there a way to use the html.encode helper on submit? Thank you.

  Hello, I have a web page that has a textarea defined on it like so: <textarea id="myTextArea" rows="6" cols="75"></textarea> There is a chance that a user may enter single and double quotes in this field. For instance, I have been testing with the following string: Just testin' using single and double "quotes". I'm hoping the end of this task is comin'. Additionally, the user may enter HTML code, which I would prefer to prevent. Regardless, I am passing the contents of this textarea onto web service. I must encode the contents of the textarea in JavaScript before I can send it on. Currently, I'm trying the following: var contents $('<div/>').text($("#myTextArea).val()).html(); alert(contents); I was expecting contents to display Just testin&#39; using single and double &#34;quotes&#34;. I&#39;m hoping the end of this task is comin&#39;. Instead, the original string is printed out. Beyond just double-and-single quotes, there are a variety of entities to consider. Because of this, I was assuming there would be a way to encode HTML before passing it on. Can someone please tell me how to do this? Thank you,

• Firefox: Can I use a relative path in the BASE tag?

  I have a little web project where I have many pages and an index/ToC file. The toc file is at the root of my project in toc.html. The pages are spread over a couple of subdirectories and include the toc with an iframe. The project doesn't need a web server, so I can create the HTML in a directory and browse it in my browser. The problem is that I'm running into XSS issues when JavaScript from the toc.html wants to call a function in a page (violation of the same origin policy). So I added base tags in the header with a relative URL to the directory in which toc.html. This works for Konqueror but in Firefox, I have to use absolute paths or the toc won't even display :( Here is an example: <?xml version='1.0' encoding='utf-8' ?> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <base href="../" target="_top" /> <title>Project 1</title> </head> <body> <iframe class="toc" frameborder="0" src="toc.html"> </iframe> </body> </html> This is file is in a subdirectory page. Firefox won't even load it, saying that it can't find page/toc.html. Is there a workaround? I would really like to avoid absolute paths in my export to keep it the same everywhere (locally and when I upload it on the web server later).

  I am having an problem. First time working with a windows server, do you know if there is any problem in character coding? My document is set to content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" but it's giving me funny words... you can check it here. This site is a pure HTML with few includes but anything else is just HTML. I can convert them to HTML entities but that is basically wasting my time. I never had this problem with any website I did except for this. Some others said "The problems seems to be that you have converted the text into utf-8 twice.". But how would Coverted it twice since dreamweaver should convert it for me but in this case it doesn't.
