  • What Is The Best Database For Delphi Desktop Applications That Supports Stored Procedures?

    I started with Turbo Pascal 3, went to TP5, Bought TP6 called Borland the next day and downgraded to TP5.5. Bought Delphi 3, and now have Delphi 5 Enterprise. I sort of lost interest in writing code about 4-5 years ago for two reasons; Spent all day writing ASP & SQL for someone else. PC Techniques magazine went away. I've got a few programs in the shareware market that are solid performers but are in need of serious updating. I love Delphi or did when it was Borland (before Borland bought DBase and all the other crap), I'd like to salvage as much of my D5E code as possible but I doubt I can. I plan on upgrading to Delphi 2010. My next software release needs to interact with a database. I'm very proficient with MS Sql and like to put all of the database code in stored procedures. What is the best database choice that interacts well with Delphi, allows stored procedures and is so easy to deploy that even the Geico gecko could deploy it? 10/25/2009 18:53 PM EST Re-Opened After Reading Install Docs for Delphi 2010 I downloaded a trial version of Delphi 2010 and unzipped the install. I've been reading the install docs included in the package. MSSQL driver requires the installation of the SQL Native Client. SQL Native Client 2008 is required for dbxmss.dll. SQL Native Client 2005 is required for dbxmss9.dll I checked my machine to see if SQL Native Client is installed. Nope. I wasn't done reading the docs so I made a note to install SQL Native Client. I googled dbxmss.dll and dbxmss9.dll and found a very interesting thread on the Embarcadero forums. read thread here. After reading this thread and some careful thought I don't think I will be using Microsoft SQL Express. I can't rely on my customers having the right drivers installed. So, I'm back to looking for a different solution. If I'm selling a $40 product to the general masses I need to have a bulletproof solution that doesn't require my brand new customer to update their machine before my software will work.

    I'm using YUI 2's calendar in YUI 3. I want to make a few minor changes to the default sam skin. What is the best way to do that? Also, how does it load Sam's skin CSS? I didn't manually include it (though it seems like I should so the user can download it in the one request I make to the combo loader for css?). The main problem I'm having is that it seems to dynamically load the Sam's skin, so any CSS I specify in my stylesheet or in the <head> section seem to be overridden. I can modify the style by getting the nodes and using YUI's Node.setStyle() method, but this doesn't seem like the best way to do things. Note: The script does include more than I need for just YUI 2's calendar, but that's because I use YUI 3 for other things irrelevant to this question.

    The other day in a local .NET group I attend the following question came up: "Is it a valid interview question to ask about Linked Lists when hiring someone for a .NET development position?" Not having a computer sciense degree and being a self taught developer my response was that I did not feel it was appropriate as I in 5 years of developer with .NET had never been exposed to linked lists and did not hear any compeling reason for a use for one. However the person commented that it is a very common interview question so I decided when I left that I would do some reasearch on linked lists and see what I might be missing. I have read a number of posts on stack overflow and various google searches and decided the best way to learn about them was to write my own .NET classes to see how they worked from the inside out. What is typical behaviour when adding new records? For example if I have 4 nodes and I am currently positioned in the second node and perform Add() should it be added after or before the current node? Or should it be added to the end of the list? Some of the designs I have seen explaining things seem to expose outside of the LinkedList class the Node object. In my design you simply add, get, remove values and know nothing about any node object. Should the Head and Tail be placeholder objects that are only used to define the head/tail of the list? I require my Linked List be instantiated with a value which creates the first node of the list which is essentially the head and tail of the list. Would you change that ? What should the rules be when it comes to removing nodes. Should someone be able to remove all nodes?   • Want to set 'src' of script to my IP-Won't load in Safari or Chrome. Relative link asp.netmvc

    I have a script that links to the server I am hosting (IP can change) usually I would just use for links: var url ='http://' + window.location.hostname + 'end of url'; But in this case it isnt appearing to be so easy. I have tried: (1) $('#scriptid').attr('src', url); as well as: (2) var script = document.createElement( 'script' ); script.type = 'text/javascript'; script.src = url; $("#insert").append( script ); Now case (2) works loads the script runs the script. But when at the end of my script it hits the 'write data' it decides to replace the entire page with just the data. Any idea on how I can do this? Note: I am using plain html not ASP. With ASP backend that is just the way it has to be. Ok it now is <script src="myscript.js"></script> C# router.AddAsyncRoute("myscript.js"...... It workes in IE & FF. But I get blank pages in Chrome & Safari. I am using document.write to write a script onto my page. Any ideas why Chrome & Safari don't like this? I am so far assuming that in Crhome & Safari it takes longer to run the script therefore launching the document.write after the DOM has loaded therefore replacing the page with a blank one. edit the script im trying to run is a modification of: d = new dTree('d'); d.add(0,-1,'My example tree'); d.add(1,0,'Node 1','default.html'); d.add(2,0,'Node 2','default.html'); d.add(3,1,'Node 1.1','default.html'); d.add(4,0,'Node 3','default.html'); d.add(5,3,'Node 1.1.1','default.html') document.write(d); Any ideas how I can get around this?   • Is there a way to make PHP's SplHeap recalculate? (aka: add up-heap to SplHeap?)

    I am using an SplHeap to hold graph nodes of a tree with directed edges that will be traversed from the leaves to the root. For this, I precalculate the "fan-in" of nodes and put them into the heap so that I can always retrieve the node with the smallest fan-in (0) from it. After visiting a node, I reduce the fan-in of its successor by 1. Then obviously, the heap needs to be recalculated because the successor is now in the wrong place there. I have tried recoverFromCorruption(), but it doesn't do anything and keeps the heap in the wrong order (node with larger fanIn stays in front of smaller fanIn). As a workaround, I'm now creating a new heap after each visit, amounting to a full O(N*log(N)) sort each time. It should be possible, however, to make up-heap operations on the changed heap entry until it's in the right position in O(log(N)). The API for SplHeap doesn't mention an up-heap (or deletion of an arbitrary element - it could then be re-added). Can I somehow derive a class from SplHeap to do this or do I have to create a pure PHP heap from scratch? HTTP/1.1 502 Bad Gateway I've read that the above code is dependant on Twitter beign available and I know it gets rather busy sometimes. Is there either a better way of receiving twits, or is there any kind of error trapping i could do to just to display "tweets are currently unavailable..." ind of message rather than causing an error. I'm usnig ModX CMS so any parse error kills the site rather than just ouputs a warning. thanks.

  • Graph Tour with Uniform Cost Search in Java

    Hi. I'm new to this site, so hopefully you guys don't mind helping a nub. Anyway, I've been asked to write code to find the shortest cost of a graph tour on a particular graph, whose details are read in from file. The graph is shown below: http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/8907/graphr.jpg This is for an Artificial Intelligence class, so I'm expected to use a decent enough search method (brute force has been allowed, but not for full marks). I've been reading, and I think that what I'm looking for is an A* search with constant heuristic value, which I believe is a uniform cost search. I'm having trouble wrapping my head around how to apply this in Java. Basically, here's what I have: Vertex class - ArrayList<Edge> adjacencies; String name; int costToThis; Edge class - final Vertex target; public final int weight; Now at the moment, I'm struggling to work out how to apply the uniform cost notion to my desired goal path. Basically I have to start on a particular node, visit all other nodes, and end on that same node, with the lowest cost. As I understand it, I could use a PriorityQueue to store all of my travelled paths, but I can't wrap my head around how I show the goal state as the starting node with all other nodes visited. Here's what I have so far, which is pretty far off the mark: public static void visitNode(Vertex vertex) { ArrayList<Edge> firstEdges = vertex.getAdjacencies(); for(Edge e : firstEdges) { e.target.costToThis = e.weight + vertex.costToThis; queue.add(e.target); } Vertex next = queue.remove(); visitNode(next); } Initially this takes the starting node, then recursively visits the first node in the PriorityQueue (the path with the next lowest cost). My problem is basically, how do I stop my program from following a path specified in the queue if that path is at the goal state? The queue currently stores Vertex objects, but in my mind this isn't going to work as I can't store whether other vertices have been visited inside a Vertex object. Help is much appreciated! Josh

    I'm having trouble with special characters that exist in an xml node attribute. To combat this, I'm trying to render the attributes as child nodes and, where necessary, using cdata sections to get around the special characters. The problem is, I can't seem to get the cdata section appended to the node correctly. I'm iterating over the source xml node's attributes and creating new nodes. If the attribute.name = "description" I want to put the attribute.text() in a cdata section and append the new node.   • How to use unset() for this Linear Linked List in PHP

    I'm writing a simple linear linked list implementation in PHP. This is basically just for practice... part of a Project Euler problem. I'm not sure if I should be using unset() to help in garbage collection in order to avoid memory leaks. Should I include an unset() for head and temp in the destructor of LLL? I understand that I'll use unset() to delete nodes when I want, but is unset() necessary for general clean up at any point? Is the memory map freed once the script terminates even if you don't use unset()? I saw this SO question, but I'm still a little unclear. Is the answer that you simply don't have to use unset() to avoid any sort of memory leaks associated with creating references? I'm using PHP 5.. btw.   • Adding Fake Build Information in TFS 2010

    We have been using TFS 2010 build for distributing a build in parallel on several agents, but where the actual compilation is done by a bunch of external tools and compilers, e.g. no MSBuild involved. We are using the ParallelTemplate.xaml template that Jim Lamb blogged about previously, which distributes each configuration to a different agent. We developed custom activities for running these external compilers and collecting the information and errors by reading standard out/error and pushing it back to the build log. But since we aren’t using MSBuild we don’t the get nice configuration summary section on the build summary page that we are used to. We would like to show the result of each configuration with any errors/warnings as usual, together with a link to the log file. TFS 2010 API to the rescue! What we need to do is adding information to the InformationNode structure that is associated with every TFS build. The log that you normally see in the Log view is built up as a tree structure of IBuildInformationNode objects. This structure can we accessed by using the InformationNodeConverters class. This class also contain some helper methods for creating BuildProjectNode, which contain the information about each project that was build, for example which configuration, number of errors and warnings and link to the log file. Just like a regular MSBuild would have done. This is very useful when using TFS 2010 Build in heterogeneous environments. It would also be possible to do this when running compilations completely outside TFS build, but then push the results of the into TFS for easy access. You can push all information, including the compilation summary, drop location, test results etc using the API.

I could stop there and let that be the entirety post #2 in this series.  Planning is the single most important element in building a cluster and the Laptop Demo Cluster is no exception.  One of the more awkward parts of actually creating a cluster is coordinating information between Windows Clustering and SQL Clustering.  The dialog boxes show up hours apart, but still have to have matching and consistent information.   • Magento hosting on a budget

    I have to do a setup for Magento. My constraint is primarily ease of setup and fault tolerance/fail over. Furthermore costs are an issue. I have three identical physical servers to get the job done. Each server node has an i7 quad core, 16GB RAM, and 2x3TB HD in a software RAID 1 configuration. Each node runs Ubuntu 12.04. right now. I have an additional IP address which can be routed to any of these nodes. The Magento shop has max. 1000 products, 50% of it are bundle products. I would estimate that max. 100 users are active at once. This leads me to the conclusion, that performance is not top priority here. My first setup idea One node (lb) runs nginx as a load balancer. The additional IP is used with domain name and routed to this node by default. Nginx distributes the load equally to the other two nodes (shop1, shop2). Shop1 and shop2 are configured equally: each server runs Apache2 and MySQL. The Mysqls are configured with master/slave replication. My failover strategy: Lb fails = Route IP to shop1 (MySQL master), continue. Shop1 fails = Lb will handle that automatically, promote MySQL slave on shop2 to master, reconfigure Magento to use shop2 for writes, continue. Shop2 fails = Lb will handle that automatically, continue. Is this a sane strategy? Has anyone done a similar setup with Magento? My second setup idea Another way to do it would be to use drbd for storing the MySQL data files on shop1 and shop2. I understand that in this scenario only one node/MySQL instance can be active and the other is used as hot standby. So in case shop1 fails, I would start up MySQL on shop2, route the IP to shop2, and continue. I like that as the MySQL setup is easier and the nodes can be configured 99% identical. So in this case the load balancer becomes useless and I have a spare server. My third setup idea The third way might be master-master replication of MySQL databases. However, in my optinion this might be tricky, as Magento isn't build for this scenario (e.g. conflicting ids for new rows). I would not do that until I have heard of a working example. Could you give me an advice which route to follow? There seems not one "good" way to do it. E.g. I read blog posts which describe a MySQL master/slave setup for Magento, but elsewhere I read, that data might get duplicated when the slave lags behind the master (e.g. when an order is placed, a customer might get created twice). I'm kind of lost here.

This has been discussed, but it has been several months, so it may be time to revisit it: Earlier discussion RE Splunk alternatives For the record, Splunk rocks. But the pricing is simply beyond what we can consider (When I spoke with Splunk today, the cost for a system to index 5gb/day of data is over $30,000.) That is more than we spend on SQL Server (by a large multiple), more than we spend on a rack of servers (by a multiple), etc. etc. The splunk sales team is correct (that for $30K we get more value and functionality than if we spend the same building our own system), but it doesn't matter. The splunk cost is simply too high (by a multiple). Soooooo, we are looking around! Is anyone out there building a splunk like system? Our basic need: Able to listen for syslog messages on multiple udp ports Able to index the incoming data in an async way Some kind of search engine Some kind of UI An API to the search engine (to embed in our console) We currently need to index 3-5gb/day, but need to be able to scale to 10gb/day or more. We do not need a lot of history (30 days is fine). We use Windows 2008 and 2003 servers. Thanks for your thoughts! UPDATE: We spent two weeks researching commercial and open source options. Our conclusion: Write our own (we are a software company... we know how to write things). We built a great system built on mongodb and .NET that gives us the functions we needed from MongoDB in about one engineering week. We have now completed our implementation. We use two Mongodb servers (master and slave), and are able to log and index any amount of log data (5gb/day, 15gb/day, etc), limited only by disk space. OBSERVATIONS: This space needs a solid solution that is $1000-3000 flat rate. The licensing models used by the commercial firms are based on a "milk the data center ops guys" models. That is their right (of course!), but it leaves a HUGE space open for someone to come in underneath them. My guess is that in another year or two there will be a good open source solution that will be really usable. Thank you all for your input (even if it was self promotion).

  • Hyper-V Live Migration across Sites!

    One of the great sessions I sat in on at Tech Ed this week was stretching a Windows 2008 R2 Hyper-V  Failover Cluster across sites.  With this ability, you could actually implement a Hyper-V cluster where you could migrate or even Live Migrate VMs across sites.   With this area’s propensity for Hurricanes, this will be a very popular topic for me over the next few months. While this technology is possible today, it’s also very complicated and can be very expensive to implement.    First your WAN connection has to support the ability to trunk your VLAN across both sites in order to Live Migrate.  This means you can’t use a Layer 3 routed connection like MPLS.  It has to be a Metro Ethernet connection or "Dark Fiber”.  Dark Fiber is unused Fiber already in the ground that can be leased from  various providers. Both of these connections would allow you to trunk layer 2 across your WAN.  Cisco does have the ability to trunk layer 2 across a routed connection by muxing the traffic but this is only available in their Nexus product line which has a very steep price tag.   If you are stuck with MPLS or the like and Nexus switching is not a realistic possibility, you will have to implement a multi-subnet cluster in which case Live Migration won’t be possible.  However you can still failover VMs to the remote site with some planning and manual intervention.  The consideration here is that the VMs will be on a different subnet once migrated, so you will have to change the IP addressing of your VMs.  This also has ramifications with DNS and Name resolution to control your down time.  DHCP with Reservations for your VMs is the preferred method to achieve the IP changes as this will automate that part of the process.   Secondly, you will have to have  a mechanism to replicate your storage across both sites.  Many SAN vendors natively support hardware based synchronous and asynchronous replication.  Some even support cluster shared volumes which were introduced in 2008 R2.   If your SANs do not support this natively, there are alternative file based replication products either software based like Double Take or hardware appliance like EMC.  Be sure to check with your vendor on the support of Disk majority if you’re replicating your quorum disk between SANs.   The last consideration is the ability to maintain quorum for your cluster.  If your replication provider does not support Disk Majority through replication, you will have to explore Node Majority with File Share Witness.  This will affect your design as a 3 node cluster with 1 node at the remote site and FSW at the production site would not have the ability to maintain quorum if the production site was lost. MS best practice for this would be to implement an even node cluster with 2 nodes at  each site and the FSW at a third site.   And there you have it.  While some considerations and research goes into implementing this solution, even a multi-subnet solution would be invaluable to organizations in the implementations of “warm” DR sites.

This way when I issue clusvcadm -s shared-storage-inst1 clvm is stopped, but GFS is not unmounted, so a node cannot alter LVM structure on shared storage anymore, but can still access data. And even though a node can do it quite safely (dlm is still running), this seems to be rather inappropriate to me, since clustat reports that the service on a particular node is stopped. Moreover if I later try to stop cman on that node, it will find a dlm locking, produced by GFS, and fail to stop. I could have simply added force_unmount="1", but I would like to know what is the reason behind the default behavior. Why is it not unmounted? Most of the examples out there silently use force_unmount="0", some don't, but none of them give any clue on how the decision was made. Apart from that I have found sample configurations, where people manage GFS partitions with gfs2 init script - https://alteeve.ca/w/2-Node_Red_Hat_KVM_Cluster_Tutorial#Defining_The_Resources or even as simply as just enabling services such as clvm and gfs2 to start automatically at boot (http://pbraun.nethence.com/doc/filesystems/gfs2.html), like: chkconfig gfs2 on If I understand the latest approach correctly, such cluster only controls whether nodes are still alive and can fence errant ones, but such cluster has no control over the status of its resources. I have some experience with Pacemaker and I'm used to that all resources are controlled by a cluster and an action can be taken when not only there are connectivity issues, but any of the resources misbehave. So, which is the right way for me to go: leave GFS partition mounted (any reasons to do so?) set force_unmount="1". Won't this break anything? Why this is not the default? use script resource <script file="/etc/init.d/gfs2" name="gfs"/> to manage GFS partition. start it at boot and don't include in cluster.conf (any reasons to do so?) This may be a sort of question that cannot be answered unambiguously, so it would be also of much value for me if you shared your experience or expressed your thoughts on the issue. How does for example /etc/cluster/cluster.conf look like when configuring gfs with Conga or ccs (they are not available to me since for now I have to use Ubuntu for the cluster)?     Im creating octree manually and want function for effectively divide all nodes and their subnodes - For example - I press button and subnodes divided - press again - all subnodes divided again. Must be like - 1 - 8 - 64. The problem is - i dont understand how organize recursive loops for that.   • How can I open a console application with a given window size?

    The application I want to start is MongoDB. If I would start it normally, it looks like this: I don't like the amount of line breaks and I have a lot of screen space, so I would like to utilize said space to get rid of the line breaks. I can change the size of the console window with MODE, so I wrote a batch file like this: @ECHO OFF MODE con:cols=140 lines=70 %~dp0mongodb\bin\mongod --dbpath %~dp0data --rest So far, so good. When I start this batch file, I get a larger window, as desired. But when I now press Ctrl+C to exit MongoDB, I get the annoying prompt: Terminate batch job (Y/N)? Which is useless, because the command I just exited out of was the last command in the batch job anyway and no matter what I answer, the result is the same. So, how can I get a larger console window for the application without having that prompt when I hit Ctrl+C?

  • Is it worth moving from Microsoft tech to Linux, NodeJS & other open source frameworks to save money for a start-up?

    I am currently getting involved in a startup, I am the only developer involved at the moment, and the other guys are leaving all the tech decisions up to me at the moment. For my day job I work at a software house that uses Microsoft tech on a day to day basis, we utilise .NET, SqlServer, Windows Server etc. However, I realise that as a startup we need to keep costs down, and after having a brief look at the cost of hosting for Windows I was shocked to see some of the prices for a dedicated server. The cheapest I found was £100 a month. Also if the business needs to scale in the future and we end up needing multiple servers, we could end up shelling out £10's of £000's a year in SQL Server / Windows Server licenses etc. I then had a quick look at the price of Linux hosting for a dedicated server and saw the price was waaaaaay lower than windows hosting. One place was offering a machine with 2 cores for less than £20 a month. This got me thinking maybe the way to go is open source on Linux. As I write a lot of Javascript at work (I'm working on a single page backbone app at the moment), I thought maybe NodeJS and a web framework like Express would be cool to use. I then thought that instead of using SQL why not use an open source NoSQL database like MongoDB, which has great support on NodeJS? My only concern is that some of the work the application is going to do is going to be dynamically building images and various other image related stuff, i.e. stuff that is quite CPU heavy - so I'm thinking of maybe writing anything CPU heavy in C++ and consuming it as a module in Node. That's the background - but basically is Linux a good match for: Hosting a NodeJS/Express site? Compiling C++ node modules? Using a NoSQL DB like MongoDB? And is it a good idea to move to these unfamiliar technologies to save money?

I was wondering which file I should place this bash command in so it will be run on startup. # Start the MongoDB server /Applications/MongoDB/bin/mongod --dbpath /usr/local/mongo/data --fork --logpath /usr/local/mongo/log I have been scouring the net and think it is between ~/.bashrc, ~/profile, /etc/bashrc, /etc/profile or ~/.bash_profile. Although I have tried these and they seem to run on terminal startup not Mac startup. Am I missing a file here? Thanks for any help you can give.

the build path of the project. Question: Is there anywhere else i have to include the postgre? While creating GWT project i did not uncheck app engine. is it a problem? can someone tell me what i am doing wrong?
