• "bad mirror archive" : What should I put as the "mirror of ubuntu archive" on installation of ubuntu?

  I'm trying to set up ubuntu from my old macintosh laptop, but when it asks me to put in the "mirror of ubuntu archive" I run into problems. For the mirror, I put in mirror.anl.gov for the ubuntu archive mirror directory, i put in pub/ubuntu/ Then I leave the http proxy blank and hit "continue" It then tries to "download release files", which starts at 0%, and eventually jumps straight to 100% and then it presents me with an error of "bad mirror archive". Any advice? I never set up ubuntu before, and I'm really struggling with this step.

This comes handy at times, so I decided to check if it would be difficult to have it on NHibernate. It turned out it is not, so here it is! • Attachment handling for web application with Jackrabbit

  I need to manage attachments on my Spring web application and I thought to use an open source repository. My app it's a job approval system using J2EE / SPRING 3 Framework and Postgress DB to allow user to tracks the job,right through every step of the approval process. It is a fully managed, collaborative system that operates from a central server and is accessed by a standard internet browser. An user should be able to add an attach to a request or an approval step, so, I though to use Jackrabbit with Postgres database persistence manager. I took a look to this post: http://onjava.com/pub/a/onjava/2006/10/04/what-is-java-content-repository.html?page=1 It's really interesting but, I've some question about this kind of solution :- I seen that Jackrabbit standalone as a Derby database embedded solution for persistence, is it enough for a professional use of the repository with more than 50 request / days (with attachment) ? Is there a reason for which I should use another database manager for persistence instead of the default one ?

• Great User Group if based near Gloucester + Links from Entity Framework 4.0 session

  I had a really fun evening doing “my final” EF 4.0 session last night (26th May 2010) at GL.NET based out of Gloucester (although secretly I made it into a IronRuby and Windows Azure session). They are a great crowd and Jimmy makes for a fantastic host + it is a very nice venue (Symantec offices in Gloucester, lots of parking, good room etc) + free pizza + free SWAG + trip to pub afterwards (the topics were very varied!). What more could you ask for? The next session is June 16th and will be on multi-tenanted ASP.NET MVC and comes highly recommended. The concept is: each time a column value changes, the checksum also changes. You can use this simple method to see if a table has changed very easily, however, beware, different column values may generate the same checksum. • Using EPEL repos with Oracle Linux

  There's a Fedora project called EPEL which hosts a set of additional packages that can be installed on top of various distributions such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux, CentOS, Scientific Linux and of course also Oracle Linux. These packages are not distributed by the distribution vendor and as such also not supported by the vendors (including Oracle) however for users that want to pick up some extras that are useful, it's very easy to do this. All you need to do is download the EPEL RPM from the website, install it on Oracle Linux 5 or Oracle Linux 6 and run yum install or yum search to get the packages. example : # wget http://download.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/6/i386/epel-release-6-5.noarch.rpm # rpm -ivh epel-release-6-5.noarch.rpm # yum repolist Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit, rhnplugin repo id repo name status epel Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux 6 - x86_64 7,124 The folks that build these repositories are doing a great job at adding very useful packages. • Install Samba 3.0.24 on Ubuntu Server 10.04 from Source

  Has anyone had any luck compiling and installing Samba 3.0.24 on Ubuntu 10.04? I'm trying to set up realtime virus scanning on Samba shares (ClamAV) using the legacy version of Samba as it is the latest release supported by samba-vscan-0.3.6b. I'm no expert at this but I think I have all of the dependencies covered and I'm following the documentation with the source code but I'm getting errors as if there is a problem with the source code. I downloaded the source directly from http://ftp.samba.org/pub/samba/stable/samba-3.0.24.tar.gz After running ./configure and make, I get the following error. • Copying an SSH Public Key to a Server

  I'm attempting to setup a git repository on my Dreamhost web server by following the "Setup: For the Impatient" instructions here. I'm having difficulty setting up public key access to the server. After successfully creating my public key, I ran the following command: cat ~/.ssh/[MY KEY].pub | ssh [USER]@[MACHINE] "mkdir ~/.ssh; cat >> ~/.ssh/authorized_keys" ...replacing the appropriate placeholders with the correct values. Everything seemed to go through fine. The server asked for my password, and, as far as I can tell, executed the command. There is indeed a ~/.ssh/authorized_keys file on the server. The problem: When I try to SSH into the server, it still asks for my password. My understanding is that it shouldn't be asking for my password anymore. What am I missing?

• Kernel source version number does not match

  I am using Ubuntu 11.10. When I type 'uname -r' in the terminal, I get: 3.0.0-15-generic I want to download the kernel source for the particular kernel version I am running. When I look on kernel.org, and then look inside kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v3.0/ I can only find source tarballs by the name of linux-3.0.x.tar.gz. My 'uname -r' has an extra '0' in it. Am I looking in the wrong place? Is my kernel not a mainline one?

• Futures/Monads vs Events

  So, the question is quite simple: in an application framework, when performance impact can be ignored (10-20 events per second at max), what is more maintainable and flexible to use as a preferred medium for communication between modules - Events or Futures/Promices/Monads ? Its often being said, that Events (pub/sub, mediator) allow loose-coupling and thus - more maintainable app... My experience deny this: once you have more that 20+ events - debugging becomes hard, and so is refactoring - because it is very hard to see: who, when and why uses what. Promices (i'm coding in javascript) are much uglier and dumber, than Events. But: you can clearly see connections between function calls, so application logic becomes more straight-forward. What i'm afraid. though, is that Promices will bring more hard-coupling with them... p.s: the answer does not have to be based on JS, experience from other functional languages is much welcome.

• totally stuck trying to SSHing remote server

  Hey guys, So i've been given access to ssh a server. I have the username/password, but server apparently requires a public key (now bear in mind that i am a noob in ssh). When I do: ssh -p 52 [email protected] terminal says Permission denied (publickey). So I went using ssh-keygen -t rsa and got myself the id_rsa and id_rsa.pub files in /root/.ssh. Chmoded /root/.ssh to 700 and /root/.ssh/* to 600. Tried sshing server.com again, same error. What am I missing? I've been given a Putty Pagant Key file (.ppk) by the SYSADMIN of server.com. Apparently, other users (all Windows) can connect using Putty Pagant.exe. Please help :)

• signalR groups - connecting/disconnecting and sending - am I missing something?

  very new to signalR, and have rolled up a very simple app that will take questions for moderation at conferences (felt like a straight forward use case) I have 2 hubs at the moment: - Question (for asking questions) - Speaker (these should receive questions and allow moderation, but that will come later) Solution lives at https://github.com/terrybrown/InterASK After watching a video (by David Fowler/Damian Edwards) (http://channel9.msdn.com/Shows/Web+Camps+TV/Damian-Edwards-and-David-Fowler-Demonstrate-SignalR) and another that I can't find the URL for atm, I thought I'd go with 'groups' as the concept to keep messages flowing to the right people. I implemented IConnected, IDisconnect as I'd seen in one of the videos, and upon debugging I can see Connect fire (and on reload I can see disconnect fire), but it seems nothing I do adds a person to a group. The signalR documentation suggests "Groups are not persisted on the server so applications are responsible for keeping track of what connections are in what groups so things like group count can be achieved" which I guess is telling me that I need to keep some method (static or otherwise?) of tracking who is in a group? Certainly I don't seem able to send to groups currently, though I have no problem distributing to anyone currently connected to the app and implementing the same JS method (2 machines on the same page). I suspect I'm just missing something - I read a few of the other questions on here, but none of them seem to mention IConnected/IDisconnect, which tells me these are either new (and nobody is using them) or that they're old (and nobody is using them). I know this could be considered a subjective question, though what I'm looking for is just a simple means of managing the groups so that I can do what I want to - send a question from one hub, and have people connected to a different hub receive it - groups felt the cleanest solution for this?
