  I want to experiment with the idea of an html based ad that utilizes my company's search API, is anyone here aware of any rules or documentation (general or per network) that explains the guidelines for creating such ads - ie markup, delivery etc - note this is not a question on how to use my company's api, I already know how to do that. For example, I would like to access the api with jsonp, probably via jquery? Can this be done? Would I host the ad and have loaded via an iframe? I just don't know these things. It is all so new to me... I... I'm scared. Actually, I'm not. However, I would like to know. Thanks in advance.

  I have a fresh install of ubuntu 12.04 server edition and mysql server is not starting properly.   I'm developing an Feed reader app. Feeds are downloaded to my server when someone requests it. then they download to user's computer. There will be 1-2 minutes cache for popular feeds. We expect that there will be 1000-5000 users (that use our app) Is a shared hosting (which currently serves almost 100 website, and it will serve 500 websites at maximum) enough for this purpose? or we should look for VPS or Dedicated hosting? Note: Our shared hosting plan has unlimited disk space and unlimited bandwidth.

• How do you assign commands to keys in Terminal?

  Is there a solution to assign special key combinations to words in terminal use. For example the less command is very usefull and i use i a lot to pipe the output of another process through it. The idea would be to set up special key combinations that are only active in terminal use assigned to write different commands? So pressing CTRL + l in terminal window could write | less or CTRL + G could stand for | grep Note: i just mean adding the letters to commandline not execute the finally. A similar way what's tabcompletion but more specific.

• Share on Facebook does not show thumbnail images

  I have a PHP application which has a "Share on Facebook" button that, On the development server shows the thumbnail images correctly and allows the user to select between them On the live server, it does NOT show the thumbnail images at all. The relevant portion of the .htaccess file is: # Set up caching on media files for 2 days <FilesMatch "\.(gif|jpg|jpeg|png|flv)$"> ExpiresDefault A172800 Header append Cache-Control "public" </FilesMatch> I'm using the exact same set of php files and .htaccess, but the server configuration is different. What could be causing this? Note that the text appears fine. Edit1 We are also doing some URL rewriting related to images in the .htaccess (on both servers): ...   I keep having trouble getting the correct monitor resolution - every time I reinstall, I happen to use a newer Ubuntu release and the old tricks I used to know no longer work. Instead of leaving a long trail of questions for every new release, I am looking for a more universal and timeless solution. What's the correct way to set the correct monitor resolution with an Nvidia GPU for a screen that does not send EDID values? Note: This is a "dummy" question -- with the help from the chat, I already found the answer, and I am now going to add my own answer to document a solution that is hopefully universal.

Note: If a moderator can move to the correct place (if I am in the inappropriate site SE) I read on various sites about licenses. I did just put the license type in the header file (in my case the javascript file - open-source). /* * "codeName" "version" * http://officialsite.com/ * * Copyright 2012 "codeName" * Released under the "LICENSE NAME" license * http://officialsite.com/LICENSE NAME */ javascript code ... In the same folder I leave a copy of the license. The listing of the folder looks like this: * codeName.js * LICENSE In the file LICENSE would leave my code uses. • Web Platform Installer issues deploying Azure SDK 1.4 on refreshed systems.

  Recently I have been doing quite a bit of testing on different means to deploy the Azure SDKs and such. After a very successful couple of systems, I started running into issues last night. Here is the problem, if I go to the Windows Azure Website, and go to Develop, then click on the SDK and Tools, then Get Tools & SDK, it launches the Web Platform Installer.  All seems well at that point, except it will go through the initial process, will find the SDK files for 1.4, but since the tools for Visual Studio are still 1.3, the location throws back a 404, which causes the Installer to fail.  NOTE:If you already had SDK 1.3 and the tools in place, it will go through. • How to camel-case where consecutive words have numbers?

  Just wondering if anybody has a good convention to follow in this corner-corner-corner case. I really use Java but figured the C# folks might have some good insight too. Say I am trying to name a class where two consecutive words in the class name are numeric (note that the same question could asked about identifier names). Can't get a great example, but think of something like "IEEE 802 16 bit value". Combining consecutive acronyms is doable if you accept classnames such as HttpUrlConnection. But it seriously makes me throw up a little to think of naming the class IEEE80216BitValue. If I had to pick, I'd say that's even worse than IEEE802_16BitValue which looks like a bad mistake. For small numbers, I'd consider IEEE802SixteenBitValue but that doesn't scale that well. Anyone out there have a convention? Seems like Microsoft's naming guidelines are the only ones that describe acronym naming in enough detail to get the job done, but nobody has addressed numbers in classnames.

  I developed an application using Windows Form in C++ (IDE MSVC 2010). Some part of application also has MFC, and OpenCv. I want to send the application to my cleint for interim testing on his own machine. I have not developed any installer for the same, and so I will be sending him the.EXE file. I want that the client should not face any difficulty in replicating the experiment, and thus saves his time. Can somebody suggest me what all softwares(such as, MSVC, .NET Framework, Windows SDK etc) should already be installed on the client's machine for successfull testing of the application? Note: OS (Windows 7) and hardware is exactly same at both sides.

• Openjdk-7-jdk some commands not recognized?

  I installed openjdk-7-jdk using apt-get install. However, when I type 'javac', the terminal says, 'bash: /usr/bin/javac: No such file or directory'. I think the link is broken, but how can I fix it? Note: I installed openjdk-7-jdk before, but then I removed openjdk and installed sun-java. Now I deleted sun-jdk and want to go back to openjdk, but javac is not recognized. I'm using Ubuntu 11.10. Edit: Recognized: java; Not Recognized: javac, javadoc, appletviewer, ...

• 12.04 indicates filesystem check on next boot, but never does one

  Just installed 12.04 32 bit on my machine, with 3 drives. However, if I reboot, I never see it doing a disk check on boot up, like I used to see with 10.10. Note, after install, I was not seeing the grub menu on boot. I made a ISO disk with BootRepair and now I get the normal grub menu. Any idea as to why the disk check is not happening on boot (I know I can boot a Live CD and then check the disk - I just want the check on boot working)?

  I was wondering if there is a Application where you can organize networks. I mean if you have installed some networks you have to note every pc's name, his ip-address and so on. Is there a Application where you can manage it? I saw the monitoring tools but that is not exactly what I'm looking for. Maybe I didnt explain me well, after all my englis his not so good :) For example if I install many different networks I write in a book how I configured them. I write pc-name ip-address ip-gateway ip-broadcast and so on for each network. It will be great if I can do it in a program to organize it well, and for example it gives me a node view of the network.

• Reinstall Ubuntu on Custom Partitions

  I am attempting to reinstall ubuntu 13.04 without losing my installed software and /home docs. I have read countless threads on this same topic, but nothing seems to apply to my situation. When I originally installed, I had created a separate partition for /home, but I am now unsure of which partition that was. Based on the picture below, where should I be installing the new copy? Also, will I run into problems since I am now running 13.10 and want to put 13.04 back on it? Should I grab 12.04 or 13.10 for this reinstall? • Can I make query strings produce separate pages?

  I have a profile page with a URL like so: localhost/profile.php/?username=Bob I was wondering, if I had a separate <title> which changed according to the username, would they produce separate pages in the google search results? How do I tell Google to only use the username string or does it search within the title? On a similar note, how would I create a separate page with the username like so: localhost/bob instead of a query string like facebook does. Do that make a new file for each user?

• Migrate from Thunderbird to Mutt

  I am contemplating moving from Thunderbird to Mutt (provided it is feasible) to move to a faster, simpler application. My current Thunderbird set-up consists of multiple IMAP accounts (gmail and google apps). Only selected folders (read labels) in each IMAP account are stored locally. For all other folders, I glance through the headers and open a message only if I find it interesting. I also use folder bookmarks to navigate to folders quickly. I also move messages across folders with keyboard shortcuts. Is it possible to replicate the set-up in Mutt? Can someone share/ point to a sample muttrc file that does the same thing? It would be great if the muttrc file is adequately commented. On a side note, will it also be possible to import my messages from Thunderbird locally? That will save me considerable network traffic (about 2GB data stored locally).

• Internal HDs that don't contain the OS aren't accessable unless I try to manually browse them

  So I have 4 internal hard drives, one that contains the OS (Ubuntu 12.04), all ext4. After starting the computer up, and without having tried to access the drives (File manager, terminal etc) it seems like the drives haven't been mounted. If I go into the "Disks" utility I see that the disks haven't been mounted. Programs that try to access the HD's during startup throw an error. For example my music player can't find the library, my note taking software can't find the database etc. But after opening the drive in a file manager everything works. I've checked SMART on all the disks and everything is a ok. Any and all ideas would be appreciated.

• Why does Unity in 2d mode employ scaling and the default othographic size the way it does?

  I previously used SFML, XNA, Monogame, etc to create 2d games, where if I display a 100px sprite on the screen, it will take up 100px. If I use 128px tiles to create a background, the first tile will be at (0,0) while the second will be at (129,0). Unity on the other hand, has its own odd unit system, scaling on all transforms, pixel-to-units, othographic size, etc etc. So my question is two-fold, namely: Why does Unity have this system by default for 2d? Is it for mobile dev? Is there a big benefit I'm not seeing? How can I setup my environment, so that if I have a 128x128 sprite in Photoshop, it displays as a 128x128 sprite in Unity when I run my game? Note that I am targeting desktop exclusively.

• Public versus private inheritance when some of the parent's methods need to be exposed?

  Public inheritance means that all fields from the base class retain their declared visibility, while private means that they are forced to 'private' within the derived class's scope. What should be done if some of the parent's members (say, methods) need to be publicly exposed? I can think of two solution. Public inheritance somewhat breaks encapsulation. Furthermore, when you need to find out where is the method foo() defined, one needs to look at a chain of base classes. Private inheritance solves these problems, but introduces burden to write wrappers (more text). Which might be a good thing in the line of verbosity, but makes changes of interfaces incredibly cumbersome. What considerations am I missing? What constraints on the type of project are important? How to choose between the two (I am not even mentioning 'protected')? Note that I am targeting non-virtual methods. There isn't such a discussion for virtual methods (or is there).

• How much code do you write everyday, *at work*?

  I'm graduating college, about to start a junior software engineering position, and I've been wondering how much I'm going to be expected to do on what kind of timeline. I mean, in python I can write maybe 500 lines in 8 hours. In C, maybe 200 lines in 8 hours. And that's a big maybe. (I'm f#$*ing terrible with C.) Other languages are somewhere in between. I don't even know if that's ridiculously slow or normal or even good, hence the question. How much code do you write a day? It would be helpful to specify what language/technology you're using, and to make note if there are big differences between them like with myself.
