• Controlling access to site folders if you cannot user Roles

  Introduction: I have read and heard advice, about learning programming by accepting programming projects. I need real assistance to understand this, because: Problem: Although, it would seem to me that one would gain much more technical knowledge by doing, real world projects, if one doesn't know much about a technology, it would add much more risk to the actual delivery of the final product! Even the smallest of real world projects could be too much for a newbie. There is a contradiction here: You need to know the job to do it! and It's recommended to do the job, in order to learn it! Question: Any personal experiences in this case would be very pleasant to know while describing: How new was the subject to you? didn't have a clue at all? Or, did you have experience with similar technologies? Was it a solo project or were you in a team? If team, then did others help you with learning it? Did it work as expected? • Why do I get "permission denied" errors with Python easy_install?

  I'm an Ubuntu newbie and have been trying to install python's easy_install so that I don't have to deal with source files when install Python libraries. I"ve ran the following, and it seems to install the correct applications: sudo apt-get install python-setuptools However, when i run easy_install sqlalchemy or easy_install pysqlite3, it doesn't work. I get the following error message: install_dir /usr/local/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/ error: can't create or remove files in install directory The following error occurred while trying to add or remove files in the installation directory: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/usr/local/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/test-easy-install-1674.pth' The installation directory you specified (via --install-dir, --prefix, or the distutils default setting) was: /usr/local/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/ Perhaps your account does not have write access to this directory? • Font corruption: lines through characters

  I have an odd problem where a one-pixel high white line is displayed through certain letters of text. Almost always only a single character type is affected at once, and only in one font size (though that size can change over time). Most of the time things are fine, but this happens several times a day. It's been happening ever since I upgraded to 10.10. I have noticed few patterns: It might be a problem with Firefox (I'm currently using the nightly ppa, but it occurred in 3.6 also) - but this could just be because I spend most of my time on my computer either at a browser or text editors. I seem to remember it happening with the buttons on various Gnome dialogs. It never occurs in text I've typed, be it an email, url bar, etc. In Firefox it happens across tabs, and the problem remains even if they are closed or reloaded; only restarting the program can fix it. Two examples (in the first, only the larger "r" is corrupted): Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

  I'm having a great deal of difficulty with an external hard drive. I'm currently running a dual boot system (XP Service Pack 3 and Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwahl) on a Dell Inspiron B120. I'm trying to set up a new 80 GB Hitachi external HD. Using GParted, I formatted the drive and set up the partitions. The partitioning scheme is as follows 10GB NTFS Primary, 2GB Linux-Swap Primary, 50GB FAT32 Primary, 12GB Unallocated. After applying those changes, I went into Disk Utility and the HD appears along with the correct partitions. When I try to mount the volumes for partitions 1 and 3, I get a pop-up stating: Error Mounting Volume An error occurred while performing an operation on "Home" (Partition 3 of HTS548080m9AT00): The daemon is being inhibited. When I try to to check the filesystem I get a pop-up stating: Error Checking filesystem on volume An error occurred while performing an operation on "Home" (Partition 3 of HTS548080m9AT00): The daemon is being inhibited. Throughout the time that I'm attempting to troubleshoot the problem, the external drive light is on and blinking. With my frustration hitting a boiling point, I try to shut down the drive and remove it so that I can plug in a different external HD that works PERFECTLY. However, when I try to shut down and safely remove the drive, I get a pop-up stating: Error Detaching Drive An error occurred while performing an operation on "80GB Hard Disk" (HTS548080m9AT00): The daemon is being inhibited. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? I'm a newbie and not that skilled with terminal commands, so please dumb it down for me if you request specific command output.

• Software Center empty "No usefulness from server" "no username in config file"

  I upgraded to 12.04 LTS and ran Software Center while a few things were running, and crashed. (2 GB RAM on a Netbook.) On reboot, Ubuntu One interface would not find any programs, neither installed (to run) nor available for download. So I launched Software Center, which opens, but does nothing. I click "Close" button and get a "Force Quit?" box. So I quit. Did research, learned to run Software Center from Terminal: 2012-04-29 23:14:36,978 - softwarecenter.backend.reviews - WARNING - Could not get usefulness from server, no username in config file Then tried the below without success: Reinstallation of software center: sudo apt-get install --reinstall software-center Didn't work. Found this in a post: remove the config file for software-center then log out and back in sudo rm -rf ~/.config/software-center Didn't work. Reinstalled Software Center with Synaptic Package Manager. Still no dice! And I am a Linux newbie, so I don't know where the Dickens that config file is. Help appreciated.

• Open Source Projects for Beginning Coders?

  After working as a molecular biologist at the bench for many years, I lost my job last year and am thinking about a career change. I've been using open-source software and doing Linux system administration since the mid 90s, and have written/improved some small shell/Perl/PHP scripts, and am very comfortable building from source, but never progressed to creating non-trivial programs de novo. I want to move to actually learning real programming skills and contributing back to the community, with the possible eventual goal of getting into bioinformatics as a career in the future. I'm a stay-at-home dad now, so I have some time on my hands. I've done a lot of research on languages, and have settled on Python as my major focus for now. I'm set up on GitHub, but haven't forked anything yet. I've looked around OpenHatch some, but nothing really grabbed me. I've heard the advice to work on what you use/love, but that category is so broad that I'm having trouble finding any one thing to get started on. What are your suggestions for getting started? How do you pick a project that will welcome your (possibly amateurish) help? With a fairly limited skill set, how do you find a request that you can handle? What are common newbie mistakes to avoid? Any other advice?

• Getting the PC speaker to beep

  There has been much written on getting the beep sound from Ubuntu releases over the years. Example: fixing the beep My needs are slightly different in that I do not want to ensure sound card beeps are functioning. Instead, I want PC speaker beeps, the kind produced by the original built-in speaker because I believe they will produce less CPU load. I have confirmed that my computer has the PC speaker by unplugging the external speakers and shutting down Ubuntu. At some point in the shutdown and restart process a beep is heard even though the external speakers have no power. I have tried the following: In /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf, turn these lines into comments: #blacklist snd_pcsp #blacklist pcspkr In .bashrc /usr/bin/xset b on /usr/bin/xset b 100 Enable in the gnome terminal: Edit Profile Prefs General Terminal Bell Ensure no "mute" selections in: System Prefs Sound various tabs (uncheck them all). Select "Enable window and button sounds" in: System Prefs Sound Sound Effects In gconf-editor desktop gnome sound, select the three sound check boxes. In gconf-editor apps metacity general select the audible bell check box. Still I get no PC speaker beeps when I send code 7 to the console via my Java program or use echo -e '\a' on the bash command line. What else should I try? Update Since my goal is to minimize load on the CPU, here is a comparison of elapsed times. Each test is for 100,000 iterations. • Subdomain still times out after set up a month ago

  I'm a newbie on this and this has probably been asked already but the subjects online were close but too vague in there answers so I've probably really messed this up. I would really appreciate specific step by step instructions. This is what I'd like to do: use the subdomain www.high-res.domain.com to be accessed by external customers with specific permissions to access the site (like ftp). We use Network Solutions to house domain.com. We recently added a new ip address to point to www.high-res.domain.com. I gave the ip address to the company that hosts our website. I pinged www.high-res.domain.com and it points to the correct ip address but still times out. It’s been a few weeks now and when you ping it, it still times out. C:ping XXX.XXX.X.XXX Pinging XXX.XXX.X.XXX with 32 bytes of data: Request timed out. Request timed out. Request timed out. Request timed out. Ping statistics for XXX.XXX.X.XXX: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss). Tracert times out as well. I even went to DNS tools and a few other sites for checking this and it shows the same thing. I recently went into the DNSmgmt on our server (wink2k3sp1) and created an A record under the DomainDnsZones which translated to a Cname when you look at it. Under the Domain it has two entries one to the subdomain and the other to the website host each with separate ip addresses. Is this correct? The website people are too busy on another project to research it further and my friends haven't gotten back to me. Please help. Thanks KK

• Using Python to traverse a parent-child data set

  I have a dataset of two columns in a csv file. Th purpose of this dataset is to provide a linking between two different id's if they belong to the same person. e.g (2,3,5 belong to 1) e.g COLA COLB 1 2 ; 1 3 ; 1 5 ; 2 6 ; 3 7 ; 9 10 In the above example 1 is linked to 2,3,5 and 2 is the linked to 6 and 3 is linked to 7. What I am trying to achieve is to identify all records which are linked to 1 directly (2,3,5) or indirectly(6,7) and be able to say that these id's in column B belong to same person in column A and then either dedupe or add a new column to the output file which will have 1 populated for all rows that link to 1 e.g of expected output colA colB GroupField 1 2 1; 1 3 1; 1 5 1 ; 2 6 1 ;3 7 1; 9 10 9; 10 11 9 I am a newbie and so am not sure on how to approach this problem.Appreciate any inputs you'll can provide.

  I recently reinstalled Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on a Dell Studio 1588 64-bit and ran into crashes as I was installing some software on the software centre. Before this, I had display/screen problems that I needed to fix so I will briefly describe that in case it has any connection to the crashes. The problem was of screen crash/flickering (related to ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5400x) when trying to adjust brightness and so I followed guidance from an earlier chain (question 131967) to (a) use jockey to install fglrx update driver (deactivate experimental beta driver) and (b) edit grub to add acpi_backlight=vendor dell_laptop.backlight=0 The crashes that happened (twice, while software centre was just finishing installation in the background) was that all tabs (on open Firefox window) stayed open along with cursor control with mousepad but all menu bars disappeared completely along with the launcher and the keyboard also turned unresponsive. So there seemed to be no way to close windows or shut down the computer except for a forced hard shut down of the system using the start button. This is very similar to Questions #167540 and #298843, which seem to be closed. Why is this happening? Is there some update or fix I need to make? Thanks!

• Problem with wake after suspend using USB remote.

  Hi, I'm a linux newbie looking for some help. I'm currently setting up an XBMC HTPC using a laptop and 10.10 and all works great except for waking from resume using the power button on the remote. The suspend works from remote works fine as does the resume using the power button on the laptop. I've checked /proc/acpi/wakeup which initially showed the following.   I was recently working on a BizTalk 2004 project where I encountered an issue with capturing exceptions (inside my orchestration) occurring from an external source. Like database server down, non-existing stored procedure, …   I thought I might write-up this in case it might help someone …   To reproduce an issue, I just rename the database to something different.   The orchestration was failing at the point where I make a SQL request via a Response-Request Port. The exception handlers were bypassed but I can see a warning in the event log saying: "The adapter failed to transmit message going to send port "   After scratching my head for a while (as a newbie to BTS 2004) to find a way to catch the exceptions from the SQLAdapter in an orchestration, here is the solution I had.   ·         Put the Send and Receive shapes inside a Scope shape ·         Set the Scope’s transaction type to “Long Running” ·         Add a Catch block expecting type “System.Exception” ·         Set the “Delivery Notification” of the associated Port to “Transmitted” ·         Change the “Retry Count” of the associated port to 0 (This will make sure BizTalk will raise the exception, instead of a warning, and you can capture that) ·         Now capture and do whatever with the exception inside the Catch block

• How to deal with OpenGL and Fullscreen on OS X

  I do most of my development on OS X and for my current game project this is my target environment. However when I play games I play on Windows. As a windows gamer I am used to Alt+Tab switching from within the game to the last application that was open. On OS X I currently can't find either a game that supports that nor can I find a way to make it possible. My current project is based on SDL 1.3 and I can see that cmd+tab is a sequence that is sent directly to my application and not intercepted by the operating system. Now my first attempt was to hide the rendering window on cmd+tab which certainly works, but has the disadvantage that a hidden OpenGL window in SDL cannot be restored when the user tabs back to the application. First of all, there is no event fired for that or I can't find it, secondly the core problem is that when that application window is hidden, my game is still the active application, just that the window disappeared. That is incredible annoying. Any ideas how to approximate the windows / linux behavior for alt+tab?

• CoffeeScript - inability to support progressive adoption

  First if, what is CoffeeScript?Web definitionsCoffeeScript is a programming language that compiles statement-by-statement to JavaScript. The language adds syntactic sugar inspired by Ruby and Python to enhance JavaScript's brevity and readability, as well as adding more sophisticated features like array comprehension and pattern matching.The issue with CoffeeScript is that it eliminates any progressive adoption. It is a purist approach, kind of like the Amish, if you're not borne Amish, tough luck. So for folks with thousands of lines of JavaScript code will have a tough time to convert it to CoffeeScript. You can use the js2coffee API to convert the JavaScript file to CoffeeScript but in my experience that had trouble converting the files. It would convert the file to CoffeeScript without any complaints, but then when trying to generate the CoffeeScript file got errors with guess what: INDENTATION!Tried to convince the CoffeeScript community on github but got lots of push-back to progressive adoption with comments like "stupid", "crap", "child's comportment", "it's like Ruby, Python", "legacy code" etc. As a matter of interest one of the first comments were that the code needs to be re-designed before converted to CoffeeScript. Well I rest my case then :-)So far the community on github has been very reluctant to even consider introducing some way to define code-blocks, obviously curly braces is not an option as they use it for json object definitions. They also have no consideration for a progressive adoption where some, if not all, JavaScript syntax will be allowed which means all of us in the real world that have thousands of lines of JavaScript will have a real issue converting it over. Worst, I for one lack the confidence that tools like js2coffee will provide the correct indentation that will determine the flow of control in your code!!! Actually it is hard for me to find enough justification for using spaces or tabs to control the flow of code. It is no wonder that C#, C, C++, Java, all enterprise-scale frameworks still use curly braces. Have never seen an enterprise app built with Ruby or PhP.Let me know what your concerns are with CoffeeScript and how you dealt with large scale JavaScript conversions to CoffeeScript.

• Can't install Linux drivers for ASUS N-13 wireless adapter

  I have a USB N13 wireless Adapter with install CD-- For Windows. I downloaded drivers from ASUS FOR N13 for Linux. Disregard install CD that came with adapter; it's for Windows. I then downloaded Windows Wireless driver install program app from Software Center in Ubuntu 12.10. The problem is me. I am newbie with all things linux; software sources, G Debi, default archive manager, synaptic package manager and the Terminal. The downloaded driver file is a .zip file. I managed to extract it to a tar.gz file and then to open it to the contained files. When I use the Windows Wireless driver program it ends up telling me there is no .inf file and goes no further. It wants to install .inf file but I don't even see one in all the files. Can someone please help me . I think you can tell by my wording I don't have a clue. I hope this is'nt too chatty. I've tried to be explicit and to the point. Thank you. Oh, this is on an ASUS LAPTOP K53E. I've looked all over Ask Ubuntu and finally found some questions even on the N13 but they didn't help; still some differences in the exact problem.

• Where is my ram?

  I have 2GB installed on my machine running Ubuntu 12.04. After some time of use, I see much of my RAM used. The RAM does not free enough even though I closed all my programs. I included 2 screenshots. First is "Gnome system monitor" (all process) and second is "htop" (with sudo), both sorted by memory usage. From both you see, that it's not possible that all running apps takes together 1GB of memory. First 7 biggest programs sum 250, but others are much smaller (all can't sum even 100MB). The cache is 300MB (yellow ||| on htop) and is not included in 1GB used. Also 260MB is already on swap. (which actually makes 1,3GB of used memory) If i start Firefox (or Chrome) with many tabs, it has only 1GB available and not potentially 1,5 GB (assume 0,5GB is for system). When I need more ram, swapping happens. So where is my ram? Which program is using it? How can i free it, to be available for e.g. Firefox? Gnome system monitor htop

• I just recursively chmod'd everything under / to 750. Any tips?

  I won't be the first and I won't be the last, I suppose. While playing around with the find command, I made a whoops and it would appear that instead of changing the permissions of the ~/web directory to 750, it changed the permissions of the entire filesystem (/) to 750, however I'm not certain, but any attempt to investigate is thwarted by Permission denied messages. For everything. This was the offending command: sudo find ~/web . type d -exec chmod 750 {} If I'm not mistaken, the Ubuntu team disabled root logins as a safety precaution so I'm out of ideas. I'm (obviously) a total newbie when it comes to file permissions so I was wondering if anyone had some good or even some bad advice to share. I've mentally prepped myself to losing everything on the computer which is only of mild consequence, since I have backups, but I did do a bit of work on this box over the week and it would be a shame to lose it all due to a boneheaded mistake. If you are reading this message, ask yourself, have you backed up any of your work recently? Thanks in advance for any insights. Feel free to scold me for using sudo carelessly
