  • What data should I (can I) gather to prove a .net bug in third party software?

    Our users are using a third-party system and every so often - a user might go all day without this happening, other days they may see it two or three times in seven hours - a red x will appear on screen rather than a button, field, or control. This is a .net system. Looking online I can see that this is a .net error. Problem is, our devs didn't write it, and the vendor wants proof that the problem resides with their system, not our PCs. What can we do to gather information on such an issue that would allow us to make our case to the vendor and get them to create a fix? I'm thinking of data to gather - anything from OS, memory. .net version installed etc. But I'd also like to know about error logging - if it's possible to log errors that occur in third-party systems.

  • SharePoint 2010 BDC Model Deployment Issue: “The default web application could not be determined.”

    Yesterday I tried to deploy a Business Data Connectivity Model project created in Visual Studio 2010 to my SharePoint 2010 test server (all RTM versions), but during the deployment of the solution, SharePoint threw my following error: Add Solution:  Adding solution 'BCSDemo2.wsp'...  Deploying solution 'BCSDemo2.wsp'...Error occurred in deployment step 'Add Solution': The default web application could not be determined. Set the SiteUrl property in feature BCSDemo2_Feature1 to the URL of the desired site and retry activation.Parameter name: properties A little bit of searching on the internet taught me that I was not the only one having this issue, actually Paul Andrew describes how to solve it in this post. Although Paul describes what to do, his explanation is not, let’s say, very elaborate. :-) So let’s describe the steps a little bit more in detail: Create a new Business Data Connectivity Model project in Visual Studio 2010 and (optionally) implement all your code, change the model etc. When you try to deploy you get the error mentioned above. To fix it, in the Solution Explorer, navigate to and open the Feature1.Template.xml file (the name could be different if you decided to give your feature a different name of course). Add the following XML in the Feature element that’s already there (replace the Value with the URL of your site of course):  <Properties>    <Property Key='SiteUrl' Value='http://spf.u2ucourse.com'/>  </Properties>The resulting XML should look like:<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?><Feature xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/sharepoint/">  <Properties>    <Property Key='SiteUrl' Value='http://spf.u2ucourse.com'/>  </Properties></Feature> Deploy the solution, now without any issues. :-) What happens now, is that when Visual Studio creates the SharePoint Solution (the WSP file), it will use the Feature template XML to generate the Feature manifest, which will now include the missing property.

  • Help find correct alsa model for onboard sound (alc887?) that will work with jack and have correct mixer setup

    I have a Gigabyte GA-MA74GMT-S2 motherboard. I am using Jack for sound - connected to ALSA. I am running Ubuntu 12.04. aplay -l reports card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: ALC887 Analog [ALC887 Analog] The problem is that the default setup, that alsa decides to use, causes stuttering and xruns no matter how generous I set the frames/period or periods/buffer etc. Also, Jack works fine if I plug in an external USB sound system and use that. My processor is an AMD phenom x4 945, and I have 8GB ram, and Video card is Geforce GTX550 Ti, all of which should be quite capable enough. I also tried Pulseaudio and that works fine, but I need to use Jack At first I thought it might be an interrupt conflict, but I have found that adding "options snd-hda-intel model=generic" to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf causes it to play correctly, but the limited mixer setup lacks controls I need - so this setup isn't good enough. Still, it seems to prove it isn't a hardware conflict. I have tried many other models, such as 3stack, 6stack, auto and even basic, and they all suffer from the stuttering. I eventually found "options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-6ch-intel" works without stuttering, and mixer is much closer to what it needs to be. Can anyone help on how to get a correct and accurate model for ALSA to use?   • Do support sites like stackoverflow upset the paid-support open source model?

    In order to stay relevant in the marketplace, I'm researching new business models for my software company. The open source model with paid support seems like a good fit for our product, but I have concerns about whether or not a paid support model is viable in an era where top-notch help is readily available for free on sites like those in the StackExchange network. Case in point -- I moved my employees to Ubuntu last year because I didn't want to pay for Win 7 licenses and new hardware (plus, the mono platform was highly attractive). My staff had no Linux experience, but were able to achieve relative competency in about 120 days with the help of AskUbuntu, StackOverflow, and a few "For Dummies" books. We did employ an Ubuntu consultant for 7 days to provide training and support, but beyond that spent $0.00 on any kind of paid expertise. In regards to my due diligence, I ran a 3 month beta of the freemium-paid-support model with one of our smaller customers, and achieved mediocre results. I'd like to think its because our software is so stable and easy to use that the customer didn't need much paid support, but I suspect that they circumvented the terms of our SLA in the same manner that we did with the move to Ubuntu. Does anyone out there has any thoughts, advice, or experience relevant to the move I'm considering? What worked, what didn't, etc? Thanks in advance!

  • How do I separate model positions from view positions in MVC?

    Using MVC in games (as opposed to web apps) always confuses me when it comes to the view. How am I supposed to keep the model agnostic of how the view is presenting things? I always end up giving the Model a position that holds x and y but invariably, these values end up being in units of pixels and that feels wrong. I can see the advantage* of avoiding that but how am I supposed to? This idea was suggested: Don't think of it in units of pixels, think of them in arbitrary distance units that just happen map to pixels at a 1:1 ratio. Oh, the resolution is half of what it was? We are now taking the x/y coordinates at 50% value for screen display, and your spells casting range is still 300 units long, which now is 150 pixels. But those numbers conveniently work out. What do I do if the numbers divide in such a way that I get decimal places? Floating points are unsafe. I think allowing decimal places would eventually cause really weird bugs in my game. *It'd let me write the model once and write different views depending on the device.

  • Observing MVC, can/should the Model be instantiated in the ViewController? Or where?

    I'm writing an experimental iPhone app to learn about the MVC paradigm. I instantiate my Model class in the ViewController class. Is this stupid? I'm asking because storing the id of the Model class, and using it works where it's initialized, but referring to it later (in response to an interface action) crashes. Seemingly, the pointer address of my Model class instance changes, but how can that be?   • Importing Excel to SQLCE

    I have a table in excel format (2007 but I can save as anything below that, naturally), and I have an SQL Compact Edition 3.5 SP1 Database table with corresponding columns. I simply want to populate the SQLCE table with the data from the excel file. The data consists of strings and integers only. I tried this utility to no avail, I also tried this SQL script but it won't work since BULK INSERT is not supported in SQLCE. I also found this Microsoft tutorial but I am basically clueless when it comes to SQL, providers and the like... Thanks !

    I have the following relationship CType has many Field Field has many Ctype and of course the tables used are fields, ctypes, and ctypes_fields. Normally, the ctypes_fields table should contain only ids referencing the other two tables. However, i'd like to put there a "options" field that will contain some content for the concrete instance only. I walked through all DataMapper tuts but I could'n find relevant info on how I could extract these specific values (the ones in the relation table) Should I create a separate model for this relation table or there is a clever way to do this ?

  • ModelBinding to and EntitySet (MVC2 & LinqToSQL)

    Hi all There seems to be an issue with the default model binder when binding to an EntitySet causes the EntitySet to be empty. The problem is described here and here: Microsoft's response is: ... We have now fixed this and the fix will be included in .NET Framework 4.0. With the new behavior, if the EntitySet passed into Assign is the same object as the one its being assigned to, no action will occur. With a work around being to edit the code generated like so: public override EntitySet<Thing> Things { get { return this._Things; } set { //CORRECTION: _Things= new EntitySet<Thing>(); _Things.Assign(value); //WAS: this._Things.Assign(value); } } As you can imagine this is not ideal as you have to re-add the code every time, does anyone have a better solution?

  • .Net MEF newbie question

    I am missing something basic when it comes to using MEF. I got it working using samples and a simple console app where everything is in the same assembly. Then I put some imports and exports in a separate project which contains various entities. I want to use these entities in an MS Test, but the composition is never actually done. When I move the composition stuff into the constructor of an entity in question it works, but that's obviously wrong. Does GetExecutingAssembly only "see" the test process? What am I missing re containers? I tried putting the container in a Using in the test without luck. The MEF docs are still very scant and I can't find a simple example of an application (or MS Test) which uses entities from a different project...

Must this be communicated via another sequence diagram? Or is there a way to include sub procedures?

  • Rails polymorphic associations, two assoc types in one class

    Consider a class: class Link < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :link_votes, :as => :vote_subject, :class_name => 'Vote' has_many :spam_votes, :as => :vote_subject, :class_name => 'Vote' end The problem is, when I'm adding a new vote with @link.link_votes << Vote.new the vote_subject_type is 'Link', while I wish it could be 'link_votes' or something like that. Is this an AR limitation or is there a way to workaround this thing? So for this example there will be 3 items in the list. I have tried a few things and cannot get this to work. Anyone have any ideas of what I can do?

  • Yii: Saving date and time in DB

    I am having trouble saving the date in DB through Model. In my controller, if I dump the date in log that I receive from $_POST , I get the date in this format "10/Nov/2012 07:30". If I use: $AccountAppointment->start_date=Yii::app()->dateFormatter->format($_POST['AccountAppointment']['start_date'], 'dd/M/yyyy HH:mm'); I get the error: Invalid datetime format: 1292 Incorrect datetime value: '10/NoGMT+5/2012 07:30' for column 'start_date' Changing the format in dateFormatter to 'dd/M/yyyy HH:mm' or 'dd/MM/yyyy HH:mm' or 'dd/MMM/yyyy HH:mm' throws the same error. Db is MySQL 5.0, Yii version 1.1.12. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I am almost stuck....thanks....

The program fails everytime it finds a datetime in this fashion: 03/07/2009 10.17.00 While it imports date like this: 29/12/2008 I don't understand where this problem come from so I ask you for your help.   • Overriding as_json has no effect?

    I'm trying to override as_json in one of my models, partly to include data from another model, partly to strip out some unnecessary fields. From what I've read this is the preferred approach in Rails 3. To keep it simple, let's say I've got something like: class Country < ActiveRecord::Base def as_json(options={}) super( :only => [:id,:name] ) end end and in my controller simply def show respond_to do |format| format.json { render :json => @country } end end Yet whatever i try, the output always contains the full data, the fields are not filtered by the ":only" clause. Basically, my override doesn't seem to kick in, though if I change it to, say... class Country < ActiveRecord::Base def as_json(options={}) {foo: "bar"} end end ...I do indeed get the expected JSON output. Have I simply got the syntax wrong?

    I want to migrate my blog from my own dotnetnuke site to another host (like blogger, posterous etc). Do you know any such host that supports importing from dotnetnuke. Posterous supports importing using MetaWebLog API, which is supposed to be supported by dotnetnuke blog module. I tried it but it does not work. I always get 'We were not able to authenticate this account' message from Posterous, altough at the same time I can post to my dnn blog using Word and MetaWebLog API.

I looked at Opencontacts.net and i used opencontacts.dll in my asp.net web application but i can't able to make it work... It shows an error Could not load file or assembly 'Utilities, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified..... I did this, OpenContactsNet.GmailExtract gm = new OpenContactsNet.GmailExtract(); NetworkCredential nw =new NetworkCredential("[email protected]","***"); OpenContactsNet.MailContactList ml = new OpenContactsNet.MailContactList(); gm.Extract(nw, out ml); I am in search of any other c# library which would do my needs....
