• How hard is it for a .NET programmer to learn Objective C and Cocoa?

  Hi, I'm trying to build a dual platform application for a company of my own I'm trying to start at night. I have the .NET version done, but have not finished the UI part. I'm thinking of buying some 3rd party controls. If I buy these controls, however, they clearly will only work in my Windows version. I'm wondering if I should try to do the UI in GTK# and use Mono with CocoaSharp or just build the thing in MS technology and teach myself the Mac side? I'm just really unfamiliar with the Mac world and am wondering how much of a learning curve there might be. I've thought perhaps of rewriting my core logic in Ruby or Python. This why I could use the .NET version with .NET controls and presumably hook the same code up on the Mac. It's an educational app targeted at consumers. As such, it shouldn't require a lot of technical sophistication to install.

• adding a column dynamically and hiding the first column like jquery slider ..

  I have a html page with 10 columns but I don't have show all in same page instead I have to show only 4 column moreover I have to render those column on a button click call add column. What is the best approach to render 1-4 column first ? Fist column render first and on clicking button say add will render 2nd column , than 3rd and fourth. Now when i will load 5th column ...I will have to hide 1st column so that i will accommodate 4 columns but data inside that column will stay ....my limit is to show 4 column at a time and hiding leftmost .... any helpful javascript or jquery advice will be appreciated ..thanks!

• When page loads display 1st image text - hide all other text

  Hi I have created http://techavid.com/design/test3.html and when you load the page you see there are 3 images. The sun image is focused(in color), while the others are greyed out until clicked. That is how it should be for the images. Also when you load the page you see under each image it's own text(i.e. 1st: Sun, 2nd: Airplane, 3rd: Nano), but on page load I only want 1st:Sun to display and hide all other text until their respective image is clicked. Any idea how to do this? thanks :) J

• Is there a way to write System.Drawing.Graphics to PDF from C#?

  I have a whole bunch of 2D graphics that is being used for both rendering controls on screen and used to print, it's pretty custom graphics that couldn't be done by any 3rd party reporting tools or off the shelf controls. The program can generate PDF files of the printed content but when I wrote it I cheated and just print the Graphics object to an in memory image and then embed that into the PDF page. Since the users are emailing the documents they're finding they are too large. I've started writing the PDF from scratch using iText, however is there a way to get System.Drawing.Graphics content directly into PDF? The way iText works and Graphics works is completely different.

• Is there a way to set up message moderation in Exchange 2007?

  Is there a way to get a feature in Exchange 2007 similar to message moderation in Exchange 2010 through the use of third party tools or otherwise? I've Googled things like "exchange 2007 outbound email approval" to no avail. We are working on getting Exchange 2010 implemented but I need an interim solution if at all possible. The reason for this is from a customer service perspective. I am willing to use a small process to be a smart host if needed. I would appreciate any suggestions or advice. Edit: My apologies, I should have been more clear that I am trying to moderate/approve outgoing email from certain users, not moderate/approve email sent to a distribution group.

• What postgresql client version should I build against, if server is 8.x?

  I'm planning updates to a system that is currently running with 8.x server on Windows, 8.x client on Windows, and 8.x client on Linux. Obviously that seems like a bad choice of platform in a mixed environment, but the Linux machine has no persistent writable storage (as an anti-rootkit measure). I'm concerned with compatibility between versions right now. Can a linux postgresql 9.0.x client connect to a Windows 8.x server? The server is using some third-party binary extensions, so upgrading it is a more involved task and will be done later. If combining a 9.0.x client and 8.x server is discouraged, would latest 8.x clients be able to continue to connect if I did upgrade the server first? META: What tag is appropriate for backward-compatibility questions?

• Windows 7: How to prevent Windows from caching my desktop wallpaper

  I have a service running that renders a changing wallpaper every 5 minutes or so, and replaces the current image file with the new one automatically (That is to say, new image but same filename). On Linux, the change is detected almost automatically, and so I have the most current wallpaper. However, on my Windows 7 machine (Which syncs the image with my Linux machine over Dropbox), it appears to cache the wallpaper from the last time I manually set the wallpaper. The image never changes, even if I restart. Is there a way to make Windows detect the file change, or periodically refresh the wallpaper cache? I'd like to avoid third-party apps if at all possible.

• ctrl-c, ctrl-v not working on Windows 7

  I'm trying to use my Windows 7 PC, and for some reason, Ctrl-C to copy and Ctrl-V to paste only work intermittently. I have a third-party clipboard viewer installed, so I can see when Ctrl-C doesn't copy to the clipboard (there's no new entry) and also when Ctrl-V pastes glarp (the cursor moves, sometimes several lines) instead of what's on the clipboard. I've checked the keyboard and mouse drivers, run a system scan, checked the event log and a bunch of other things I've seen online, and haven't found a resolution. Any other ideas for things to check or try?

• SQL to display an event on start date, end date and any days in between.

  Hello, This should be fairly simple, but I can't get my head around it. I have an event in my database with a startDate and an endDate. I need to display this event (based on the current date) on every day the event occurs. So if the event starts on the 3rd of May and finishes on the 7th of May, the SQL query must find it on every single day. How can I achieve this? SELECT * FROM events WHERE startDate ??? Thanks, Tim

• Multicasting Windows 7 Image

  I am trying to deploy some new machines with windows 7 for the first time in our computer labs. We used to use third party imaging software and then run sysprep after the image was copied(XP), but it seems you can't go that route with windows 7. We set up a new imaging server with the windows system image manager, but when we try to multicast the image it pretty much takes down our whole staff and faculty network. I heard you can turn on a multicast feature on our cisco switches to help with the issue, but that it also slows the switches to a crawl. Another idea we have tried was pulling the the computer lab switch off the main network and plugging the imaging server directly into the computer lab switch so the multicast doesn't take down our network, but it doesn't seem to work without being able to hit a domain controller. Is there a way to multicast without taking out the network? I feel like I am missing something... Thanks in advance

  Hi! I've written two programs: the first, the "writer", creates a FIFO and writes data into it. The second one, the "reader" runs in background and looks for data in the FIFO. Once data is there, the reader reads it out. If I start e.g. two writers and two readers, they all can write/read into/from the same FIFO.   I'm trying to create an array of the next 5 working week days (Monday - Friday, excluding today). I know the working week varies around the world but this is not important for what I am trying to do. So, for example, if today is a Wednesday, I want the dates for Thursday and Friday of the current week and Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of the following week. I thought this would work: $dates = array(); for ($i = 1; $ < 6; $i ++) { $dates[] = date('Y-m-d', strtotime('+ '.$i.' weekday')); } But for today, it is giving me: Monday 1st Tuesday 2nd Wednesday 3rd Thursday 4th Sunday 7th! • How to make WPF app work as a child process in Citrix

  I am working on a 3rd party application that allows plugins to be written in .NET 1.1. I have decided I would like to write my plugin in a seperate process that is called from the .NET 1.1 application (achieved using Process.Start). This is fine- I create a new process that is a WPF app. When I launch this through MSTSC everything works as expected, however when I run the app through Citrix, the WPF child app fails to render correctly, and the mouse position starts going crazy- the child process window is basically not usable. Is there a way to avoid this happening? If I create a seperate WPF application and deploy this through Citrix everything works fine. If I create a child Windows forms app in .NET 3.5, that also works fine.

• Best way to identify and dispose locked thread in java.

  I have to call a function 3rd party module on a new thread. From what I've seen, the call either completes quickly if everything went well or it just hangs for ever locking up the thread. What's a good way to start the thread and make the call and wait for a few secs and if the thread is still alive, then assuming it's locked up, kill (or stop or abandon) the thread without using any deprecated methods. I have something like this for now, but I'm not sure if this is the best way to do it and I want to avoid calling Thread.stop() as it's deprecated. • Mail server for Windows 2008

  I'm going to get a Windows 2008 dedicated server sometime soon. I'm going to have my website hosted on it, so, I also want to run a mail server on the same machine to receive any mail sent to the website (I use the SMTP Server in IIS for sending mail, but this about receiving not sending) Does Windows 2008 have a built-in POP3 OR IMAP server? If so, can it be accessed through a webmail interface? I mean does it also have a webmail interface similar to OWA for example? If not, do you have suggestions for a good mail server with a webmail interface, preferably free or open source? MS Exchange is above my budget and my needs are so simple anyway. I heard good things about hMailServer but I checked and it doesn't have a webmail interface. I know I can outsource this to a third party for a little monthly fee, but I prefer to host my own server. • What's the most "death-resistant" component on Android?

  I'm looking for the most suitable class to be a dispatcher for AsyncTasks invoked from my Activities. I think it could be one of these: subclass of Application; subclass of Service; my own static stuff. As for me - it's simlier to implement the 3rd choice. But the question is will it be more "death-resistant" than Service or Application? Also it's very interesting what will live longer - Application or Service? My guess is the Application lives as long as the app (task in terms of Android) process lives. So basically I need to range those options by their "death-resistant" quality, because I'd like to rely on the most "static" thing.

• Searching a 2D array for a range of values in java

  I have a 2^n size int array and I want to check if an element exists that is greater than 0. If the element exists, I want to divide the array by 4 and check if the coordinates of the found element are in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th quadrant of the array. For example, logically if the element exists in the first quadrant it would look something like this: If array[][] 0 && the row of that coordinate is in the range 0-(grid.length/2-1) && the column of that coordinate is in the range 0-(grid.length/2-1) then do something. I'm really not sure how to check the row and column index of the found element and store those coordinates to use in my if statement. Help!

  As a consultant I get to toy around with many different products and APIs as the customer demands we use X and Y. I think it is great fun and I learn a lot from it. What will make a great developer over time is, in my opinion, the will to understand and learn new things. Therefore, I will always try to understand what happens "behind the scenes" when I am using 3rd party products. I spend around 10-15% of my time in Reflector to learn what the heck I'm really doing when I call method X. How much time do you spend on average? This may also apply to reading (open) source code, documentation etc.

• Sound card doesn't work and yet does.

  I have a really weird one tonight. Today we had a LAN party and all of a sudden the sound on a couple PC's stopped working for programs like the games, windows media player, etc. However, when errors would popup (like trying to change the volume settings) you would here the default error chime. Restarting the computers you would here the logoff-login sounds and after a restart the sound would work for a bit in both games and apps and then suddenly stop. Restarting also didn't always fix the problem. I can't figure this out. If the sound card/driver didn't work then how could we hear sounds from the windows sound scheme? No sound with VLC, windows media player, youtube, games, nothing. The only thing I can figure out is that this is a bad game crashing the primary driver or some kind of weird virus these PC's might have picked up.

• Store time of the day in SQL

  How would you store a time or time range in SQL? It won't be a datetime because it will just be let's say 4:30PM (not, January 3rd, 4:30pm). Those would be weekly, or daily meetings. The type of queries that I need are of course be for display, but also later will include complex queries such as avoiding conflicts in schedule. I'd rather pick the best datatype for that now.   I am currently running Windows 8 Pro RTM (MSDN) and wonder if there is any way to use the touch-pad as some kind of touchscreen for it or maybe just gestures. I have a Synaptics Touch-pad, searching the internet I found some articles saying about some kind of relation between Synaptics Touch-pad and Windows 8, but I was not able to get info about how to use the gestures or something similar. Simply the question is, How can I enable Synaptics Gestures for Windows 8 or use the touch-pad as touch-screen (I know it would be a really tiny touchscreen, but I want to try) with third-party Tools or hacks?
