• Question about MySQLdb, OS X 10.5, and authentication

  I'm a noob at Python and have been having problems with MySQLdb and OS X Leopard 10.5. I have a php app that is doing db access just fine with pdo but also want to access with Python. When I use the same credentials with MySQLdb as php, I get the following error: File "build/bdist.macosx-10.5-i386/egg/MySQLdb/connections.py", line 188, in __init__ _mysql_exceptions.OperationalError: (1045, "Access denied for user 'arc_db'@'localhost' (using password: YES)") The authentication piece works fine on my ubuntu server (installed via apt-get) implying that it is something specific to my OS X MySQLdb install. Looking at some postings, I thought it would be my local build of MySQLdb which seems to be problematic with OS X. But I am able to import fine: Python 2.5.1 (r251:54863, Feb 6 2009, 19:02:12) [GCC 4.0.1 (Apple Inc. build 5465)] on darwin Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information. >>> import MySQLdb >>> Also, wanting to create a positive, I am able to access and return results from a database tilted test_something (which presumably bypasses the MySQL's authtentication - not sure exactly how though). Trying to figure out a little more what is going on, I turn on logging for mysql and get the following (added my own comments): 100609 19:09:45 3 Connect Access denied for user 'arc_db'@'localhost' (using password: YES) //not worked 100609 19:10:02 4 Connect arc_db@localhost on arc_development //did work I'm not really sure what the 3 or 4 means but presumably a sucess or failue. So, I guess what would be the next step? Am I doing some obvious stupid python mistake (very likely)? Is there a better way for me to prove that this should / can be working? Is there any way to determine what MySQLdb is sending exactly in its authentication message to MySQL? thanks

• Can I add round cornres to HtmlPanelGrid in code or in page? If yes - how?

  Hi all! I have a task - add round corners to HtmlPanelGrid. Now I am trying to do it with css (using 4 images for each corner - that css create our designer). I load css and try to do this in my code: this.grid = new HtmlPanelGrid(); this.grid.setStyleClass("toplist,toplist-top"); But no changes I could see in my page. • How do I install both D2007 and D2010?

  From what I have gathered, one can have both editions of Delphi installed. My concern is that default paths, etc, may get confused especially when installing 3rd party components. The reason why I want to do this is I have some 3rd party components which have not been updated. Although I have the source files, I'm not knowledgeable enough to update them. I have tried compiling it for D2010 and received so many errors that it would be easier to install and use it in D2007. I'm running Windows 7. Thanks in advance.

• Paypal adaptive payment API call with C# .NET? Preferably with WebServices

  Okay I might be entirely off track now but here goes: Our "webshop" offers two functions, buying a specific product and selling it back to us. Back-end handles if the user can sell or not. I've decided to use Paypal's adaptive payments for this one as it seems the way to go doing these kinds of transactions. I've never implemented any kind of shop so I'm totally green with this one. I only recently learned ASP.NET and have mainly developed games before moving to this kind of development. HTTP is still some level of magic to me hehe.. I might be confused but I think paypal offers a webservice with their adaptive payment API. My humble request: A nice soul who wants to share an example of implementing an adaptive payment API call with C# .NET. If they don't offer it as a webservice I'll probably find it as a custom .dll or something. Any tips and examples are highly appreciated! Thanks for reading

• PyGTK, Glade, Changing the window view and threads

  Heya Everyone, Forgive me if this seems like a stupid question, just so far no where on the internet can I find someone offering a solution to this and I just wanted to get some feedback from someone with more experience than myself (I've only been using python, pyGTK and Glade for 2 days now). I have a UI window displaying and it updates with messages from a thread that is handling a bluetooth connection. This is fine and I have the application closing and running quite reliably, the problem is, after a bluetooth connection is made I wish to maintain the bluetooth thread (i.e. keep the connection going) but completely change the UI of the main window. Now the impression I am getting from pyGTK applications made from glade, is that the easiest thing to do is just open a new window. Is this really the best option? Can I cut the tree of widgets off at the root, maintaining the window widget but add on a new set of widgets from a separate glade file? If opening a new window is the best option, am I right in assuming that the bluetooth thread can be kept alive during this transition, providing I update any callbacks? Any help or pointers would be great. Cheers, Matt

  I actually happily design and develop JEE Applications for quite 9 years, but I realized recently that as time goes by, I feel more and more fed up of dragging all these ugly bean classes with their bunch of getters and setters. It would still be possible to mix annotation and written down getters or setters, to cover cases when it should do non-trivial sets and gets. In other words, annotation would auto-generate the getter / setter code piece except when a literate one is provided. Moreover, I'm also dreaming of replacing things like that : MyBean b = new MyBean(); int v = b.getField1(); b.setField3(v+1); by such : MyBean b = new MyBean(); int v = b.field1; b.field3 = v+1; In fact, writing "b.field1" on the right side of an expression would be semantically identical to write "b.getField1()", I mean as if it has been replaced by some kind of a preprocessor. It's just an idea but I'm wondering if I'm alone on that topic, and also if it has major flaws. • Scipy sparse... arrays?

  Hey, folks. So, I'm doing some Kmeans classification using numpy arrays that are quite sparse-- lots and lots of zeroes. I figured that I'd use scipy's 'sparse' package to reduce the storage overhead, but I'm a little confused about how to create arrays, not matrices. I've gone through this tutorial on how to create sparse matrices: http://www.scipy.org/SciPy_Tutorial#head-c60163f2fd2bab79edd94be43682414f18b90df7 To mimic an array, I just create a 1xN matrix, but as you may guess, Asp.dot(Bsp) doesn't quite work because you can't multiply two 1xN matrices. I'd have to transpose each array to Nx1, and that's pretty lame, since I'd be doing it for every dot-product calculation. Next up, I tried to create an NxN matrix where column 1 == row 1 (such that you can multiply two matrices and just take the top-left corner as the dot product), but that turned out to be really inefficient. I'd love to use scipy's sparse package as a magic replacement for numpy's array(), but as yet, I'm not really sure what to do. Any advice? Thank you very much!

  I've already written some small Android Applications, most of them in one Activity and nearly no data that should be persistent on the device. Now I'm writing an application that needs more Activities and I'm a bit puzzled about how to organize all this. My app will download some data parse it show it to the user and then show other activities depending on the data and the user interaction. Some of that data could be cached, some of it has to be downloaded every time. Some of that data should not be downloaded freshly at the moment the orientation changes, but it should on the moment the activity is created... Another thing I'm confused about are things like a httpClient. I now for example create a new httpclient for every activity, the same thing for locationlisteners. Are there books, a blogs or documentations with patterns, examples and advice on organizing larger apps build on android? Everything I found until now are get startet tutorials leaving me alone after 60 lines of code...

• htaccess Redirect 301 problem .. all redirects with one string fail to redirect and 404

  So I have moved a website and am trying to 301 redirect everything, which I do quite often so this is a weird problem but probably something stupid I'm not seeing. ALL of my redirects are working fine, except any redirect that the first string starts with "/Dining" or "/dining" are failing. For example, this redirect works fine- Redirect 301 /healthfitness/teeth.cfm /healthcare/pretty-teeth ...as well as 100s of others. • Detect block size for quota in Linux

  The limit placed on disk quota in Linux is counted in blocks. However, I found no reliable way to determine the block size. Tutorials I found refer to block size as 512 bytes, and sometimes as 1024 bytes. I got confused reading a post on LinuxForum.org for what a block size really means. So I tried to find that meaning in the context of quota. I found a "Determine the block size on hard disk filesystem for disk quota" tip on NixCraft, that suggested the command: dumpe2fs /dev/sdXN | grep -i 'Block size' or blockdev --getbsz /dev/sdXN But on my system those commands returned 4096, and when I checked the real quota block size on the same system, I got a block size of 1024 bytes. Is there a scriptable way to determine the quota block size on a device, short of creating a known sized file, and checking it's quota usage?

  Hi there, am relatively new to JMF but have gone through the documents and have a sufficient understanding of how it works. That been said am having some trouble implementing a the server side for RTPSockets. After looking at their illustrations and example. I am still abit confused. Am I to develop a datasource and also datasink classes to handle the transfer? What am trying to do is stream data from my application to the underlying network and receive it back through another application. • Should we seal Singletons? Should we try to inherit from Singletons in the first place?

  Should a Singleton class be allowed to have children? Should we seal it? What are the pro's and con's? For being able to inherit from a Singleton class, we would have to make the constructor protected instead of private. Now, that will be fine in c#, but the protected word in java gives both child-classes and package-classes access to the constructor. Which means not only classes that inherit from our Singleton can access the constructor but other classes in the same package can do it. I'm a bit confused about all this facts. Maybe I am making a big fuss about nothing to worry about too much? Until now, I never had any necessity of trying to inherit from a Singleton, so maybe this is just an academic question! Thanks

• Learning Visual C++ 2008 and C++ at the same time? Any resources to recommend?

  Hey guys, I am trying to learn Visual C++ 2008 and C++ at the same time to get involved with sourcemod, a server side modding tool for valve games. However I have never touched Visual C++ or C++ in general, and doing some preliminary research I am quite confused on these different versions of C++ (mfc, cli, win32), and why a lot of people seem to hate Visual C++ and use something like Borland instead. I really learn visually, and have used videos from places like Lynda.com with great success. I was wondering if anyone had any exceptional resources they had come across to teach Visual C++ 2k8, with its intricacies and setting up the IDE along with C++ at the same time. Books would be nice, but videos would be preferred, and I don't mind paying for resources. Thanks in advance!

• help with rails render action vs routing

  I was using some image cropping example that I found online and now I got confused. There is actually no "crop" method in my controller. Instead (following the guide) I put a render :action => 'cropping', :layout=> "admin" In my create method. That renders a page the view called cropping.html.erb . It works fine but I have no idea how to link or render that page otherwise, like if I wanted to hit a URL directly or press a button to recrop an image. Should I actually create a crop method in my controller and hook it up via routing if I want to be able to do this, or is there a way within my view to link to the same place that renders the cropping action? Sorry about the confusion :) It doesn't help that the first version of the tutorial did have a cropping method and he removed it!! Any explanation on why one method is better over the other would be great. Thanks!!

  Good evening everyone, I am currently starting to dive into asp.net mvc and I really like what I see so far.. BUT I am somewhat confused about 'drop-in' functionality (similiar to what rails and it's plugins and nowadays gems are), an active community to contact etc. For rails there's github with one massiv index of plugins/gems/code-examples regarding mostly rails (despite their goal being generic source-code hosting..), for blogs, mailing lists etc it's also pretty easy to find the places the other developers flock around, but... for asp.net mvc I am somewhat lost where to go/look. It all seems scattered across codeplex and private sites, google code hosting etc etc.. but is there one (or few places) where to turn to regarding asp.net mvc development, sample code etc?   I'm doing something stupid and trying to capture thumbnails, snapshots, images of a html webpages. I'm doing something along the lines of: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/443837/how-might-i-obtain-a-snapshot-or-thumbnail-of-a-web-page-using-php DCOM + IE + PHP (imagegrabwindow; example from manual) Everything works PERFECT until I try to capture a HTTPS website... https://mail.google.com for example. imagegrabwindow produces a png, but it only shows the browser. the contents of the browser are black. If I log out of Google, I can capture the browser window and the contents thereof - the second I log in, the contents (not the browser frame) are black screen. Yes, I've increased the timeout (before closing the browser window). IE has clearly loaded the page, it just refuses to render for imagegrabwindow. I've been fighting this long enough I know it's either a permissions problem or a service needs to interact with the desktop. Does anyone have any clue what permissions need to be set or which service needs access? I assumed cryptographic services, but that's run as a network service and trying to change it to interact makes it shout and carry on. This is the last piece of the puzzle, I'd really like to get it working. Thank you!

  Hi all, I've been reading about what happens after packets are captured by NICs, and the more I read, the more I'm confused. Firstly, I've read that traditionally, after a packet is captured by the NIC, it gets copied to a block of memory in the kernel space, then to the user space for whatever application that then works on the packet data. Then I read about DMA, where the NIC directly copies the packet into memory, bypassing the CPU. So is the NIC - kernel memory - User space memory flow still valid? Also, do most NIC (e.g. Myricom) use DMA to improve packet capture rates? Secondly, does RSS (Receive Side Scaling) work similarly in both Windows and Linux systems? I can only find detailed explanations on how RSS works in MSDN articles, where they talk about how RSS (and MSI-X) works on Windows Server 2008. But the same concept of RSS and MSI-X should still apply for linux systems, right? Thank you. Regards, Rayne

• Persistence with Vaadin

  Hi I'm trying to learn vaadin. I'm really confused how to do any kind of application development with persistence because if I have a reference to my service layer objects, they get stored in session and I really don't want that. Persistence stuff just isn't serializable. My case is that I have an already made application that uses Spring and I'm creating a new UI for it with Vaadin. I can inject the spring stuff to my Vaadin application but that gets stored in the session. Any tips? By the way how do you post in the Vaadin forums? I can't find a post button or way to register :)

If anybody sees a simpler solution or a problem, please let me know! The eCommerce system I'm using sends me some data along with a signature. They also give me their public key in .pem format.   A new user of Tortoise SVN, working over source control. I have a Visual Studio solution which consists of 5 webAppliation projects. I need to take one out and work over it in a branch. When I try to branch it, It is asking me of one of these options head revision in repository specific revision in repository working copy revision Problem 1: What exactly are these ? I am confused with "head revision" and "working copy", as they appear same to me. EDIT: Problem 2: Why cant we branch from Repository GUI itself, (would be head revision) ? Problem 3: Can you list the steps, needed to branch from a directory !

  class << self attr_accessor :n, :totalX, :totalY end The syntax above is used for defining class instance variables. But when I think about what syntax implies, it doesn't make any sense to me, so I'm wondering if this type of syntax is used for any other types of definitions. My point of confusion here is this: class << self The append operator normally means "add what's on the right to the object on the left". But in the context of this block, how does that add up to "put the contents of this block into the definition of the class instance rather than the instance"? For the same reason I'm confused as to why in one context class << self can define class instance variables while in another it seems to create class variables such as here: class Point # Instance methods go here class << self # Class methods go here end end
