• MacBook Pro + OSX Lion + Samsung SA550 HDMI not playing nicely

  I bought a Samsung SA550 monitor as a second monitor for my 2009 MacBook Pro that is running OSX 10.7 Lion. The monitor has 2 outputs, VGA and HDMI. If I connect using VGA everything is fine. If I connect using HDMI-DVI cable, and DVI-to-mini display converter I get static and flickering: The DVI-to-mini display converter that I use: I have used this converter with a different monitor that had a DVI output port a while ago, so at least it used to work once upon a time. I am not sure if this problem is because of that converter or not. I have never used a monitor with an HDMI output before. Appreciate your help. Thank you!

  I have a Dell 15Z. GT525M Video card. Updated Driver via NVIDIA. Problem is I just purchased a Yamasaki Catleap Q270 monitor. It is a (2560x1440) monitor with only a Dual DVI-D out. 15Z only has HDMI and a Mini Display Port. I got a Active Dual DVI-D to Mini Display Port Active Adapter(Linked Below). http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10428&cs_id=1042802&p_id=6904&seq=1&format=2 The Setup works when i plug it into my Macbook air 13.3. However when I plug it into my 15Z it doesn't work. Tried everything I can thank of. Window control P. FN and F1. It just doesn't work. I believe the issue lies in the Mini Display Port but i can't be sure. No matter what i do, the Mini Display Port doesn't get recognized. Spent 3 hours on the phone with the XPS Tech team. They simply said it was not compatible.... Any help or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

• Seeking glass lcd montiors with LED backlight

  The only LCD monitors with glass fronts and LED back-lighting I can find are the ones by Apple. And they only sell a 24" one at 2.4x the price of any other 24" monitor at 1920x1200, and a 30" one, which honestly I can't put on my desk. Oh, and the 24" one uses a mini-display port plug only. So I'd be out of luck until there's display side adapter available. I am generally looking for a 16:10 or 4:3 rather than 16:9 monitor. It would be awesome if someone could find another, cheaper, monitor that isn't fronted by a plastic film, but rather with glass. It would be double awesome if said monitor was also 120hz so that I can use nVidia's 3D goggles. Update: One month and 16 days later I seem to not be the only one that can't find another glass based computer lcd monitor. LED backlighting is available though.

  I am new to Perl and I work in a Linux OEL 5x server. I am trying to configure the Perl DB modules for Oracle connectivity (DBD and DBI modules). Can anyone help me out in the installation procedure? I had tried CPAN didn't really worked out. Any help would be appreciated.   Hi all, I'm stumped. I'm trying to get a list of all the email address a person has. I'm using the ABPeoplePickerNavigationController to select the person, which all seems fine. I'm setting my ABRecordRef personDealingWith; from the person argument to - (BOOL)peoplePickerNavigationController:(ABPeoplePickerNavigationController *)peoplePicker shouldContinueAfterSelectingPerson:(ABRecordRef)person property:(ABPropertyID)property identifier:(ABMultiValueIdentifier)identifier { and everything seems fine up till this point. The first time the following code executes, all is well. When subsequently run, I can get issues. Firstly, I can uncomment the NSLog at the top of the function. I get a leak from the NSLog's ABRecordCopyValue every time through, but the code seems to run fine. Also, I can comment out the CFRelease(multi); at the end, which does exactly the same thing. Static compilation errors, but running code. So without a leak, this function crashes. To prevent a crash, I need to haemorrhage memory. Neither is a great solution. Can anyone point out what's going on? Solution: It turned out that I wasn't storing the ABRecordRef personDealingWith var correctly. I'm still not sure how to do that properly, but instead of having the functionality in another routine (performed later), I'm now doing the grunt-work in the delegate method, and using the derived results at my leisure. • Parallelism implies concurrency but not the other way round right?

  I often read that parallelism and concurrency are different things. Very often the answerers/commenters go as far as writing that they're two entirely different things. Yet in my view they're related but I'd like some clarification on that. For example if I'm on a multi-core CPU and manage to divide the computation into x smaller computation (say using fork/join) each running in its own thread, I'll have a program that is both doing parallel computation (because supposedly at any point in time several threads are going to run on several cores) and being concurrent right? While if I'm simply using, say, Java and dealing with UI events and repaints on the Event Dispatch Thread plus running the only thread I created myself, I'll have a program that is concurrent (EDT + GC thread + my main thread etc.) but not parallel. I'd like to know if I'm getting this right and if parallelism (on a "single but multi-cores" system) always implies concurrency or not? Also, are multi-threaded programs running on multi-cores CPU but where the different threads are doing totally different computation considered to be using "parallelism"?

• Tiling window manager where dual heads share common workspace

  I want to use a tiling window manager with my dual monitor setup, but almost all wms seem to treat each monitor as an independent workspace. This means that I can change the workspace of monitor 0 without affecting the workspace of monitor 1. This is not what I want -- I want a workspace to span both monitors, where each monitor is essentially a separate column for tiling (my monitors are oriented vertically, so they are well-suited as tiling columns). When I switch workspaces, say with Mod-[0-9], I want both monitors to change contents. So far the only wm I have found to support this is wmii, but I'd love to try some other options. Have I missed this capability from other tiling wms?

  I am using ubuntu 12.04 and my video card is ATI Radeon 5000. I cannot use double screen (extended version).   I have a server running multiple instances of mysql and also has the zabbix-agent running.   On a multi-monitor system, if I'm viewing a full-screen video in Flash on one monitor, clicking the mouse on the other monitor causes Flash to leave full-screen mode and revert to normal size. What's the easiest way of preventing this that works on my version of Flash? My system is Flash 10 (10.0.12.36), in Firefox 3.5 on Windows Vista 64, but I think it affects all current versions. This is very annoying behaviour, but unfortunately, according to this bug report response it seem to be a security feature, rather than a bug: We understand that many users would like fullscreen on one monitor and to be able to interact with your OS on another monitor. However, due to security requirements, we require that Flash and Browser must be the current focus of your OS.

  As a semi-dual monitor user on my MacBook, I run into a particular issue that drives me nuts. The scenario is at work I run my MacBook Pro's display as the secondary monitor to a dual-monitor setup. I primarily use the secondary view for my social network windows (Adium, Tweetie, Gabbble, and IRC). I position exactly as I want them to see all at the same time. However, when I disconnect my MBP to go home and reconnect to my other monitor at home, all the applications were shifted onto the main screen (since that is where they went when I disconnected the monitor before I left). With this, I have to go through the whole process again to move and position them on the secondary screen again. Is there a utility or application that will allow me to create screen/window profiles that will basically memorize the current position of all the windows and persist it to be re-instantiated later?

• How can I get Xubuntu's workspace switcher to show the proper sized desktop?

  I recently installed the Xubuntu desktop over my Ubuntu 12.04 installation, and have been customizing it to my liking. My laptop comes to class with me, and when it's not out of the room, it's usually connected to a second monitor. When I am not connected to the monitor, the workspace switcher shows that my windows are all inside about half of each workspace, but there's only one monitor connected. I'm looking for a way to get it to show workspaces that are reminiscent of this monitor's size and nothing more. Is there a way to fix that? I can attach a picture of the problem if necessary.

• Cannot enter BIOS due to broken screen

  Lately my laptop(hp g42 247sb) screen is damaged, so I hook it up with a external monitor(LG something) and it works fine now. But the only annoying thing is I cannot navigate the BIOS menu for some tweaking because the BIOS not shown on the external monitor,instead, it only shown on the broken laptop screen, and it only output to my external monitor when windwos/os is loged-on. So, is there anyway I can force output during BIOS/BOOT/POST to my external monitor? Things I have done and didn't work: (1)Set my LG monitor as primary display on both window properties and Intel Graphics panel (2)Enter the bios (F10 key) and press the fn+F4 key(change display output). (3)Disable and uninstall my internal screen(broken laptop screen) using device manager and restart, but windows(bios?) install it back on log-on. Please help me!

The basics: Gigabyte MB AMD 64bt processor Ubuntu 12.04 64bit two Nvidia GeForce 8600GT video cards using a SLI bridge two 22" DVI input HP monitors So here is my issue (it is driving me nuts) with X Server. If I plug both monitors into GPU 0 X Server auto configures TwinView and all is grand, works like a charm, though both are running off of GPU 0. If I plug one monitor into GPU 0 and one monitor into GPU 1, X Server enables the monitor on GPU 0, sees but keeps the monitor on GPU 1 disabled. My presumption (we all know the saying about presumptions) is that all I would have to do is select the disabled monitor on GPU 1 and drop down the Configure pull down and select TwinView...problem is when the monitors are plugged in this way, the TwinView option is greyed out and can not be selected. What am I not understanding here? Is there some sort of configuration I need to do elsewhere for Ubuntu to utilize both GPU's? Any help will be most appreciated, thanks in advance.

  I've got a dual-monitor setup, with the monitors configured through the "Nvidia X Server Settings" application. In the Ubuntu Display settings, the monitors show up as one extra-wide monitor labelled "Laptop". Until now, this really hasn't been a problem, but now I'm trying to set up a Wacom tablet. The Ubuntu tablet settings allow the tablet to be mapped to a specific monitor, but since the OS "thinks" that I have only one monitor, I can only map the tablet to both of them. This is a problem. Is there any way to have Ubuntu recognize the monitors separately?

• Unrecognized Display

  I just installed a fresh copy of Ubuntu 12.04, and before I installed drivers, I was able to get my two monitor setup working just fine. However, after updating all my drivers and installing all the recommended software, my second display is no longer detected. My main display is called "Laptop" (which it was detected as the monitor name previously), but it is the only display listed. I tried to detect displays, nothing happened. The monitor is plugged in, and should be working fine - after all, it just was. How can I fix the problem of Ubuntu not listing my second monitor in the display settings?

• Radeon Open Source Drivers Configuration

  How does one configure the Radeon Open Source drivers? I have just installed Ubuntu 12.10 and want to try the Open Source drivers instead of the proprietary AMD binaries. After the installation, the driver seems to be installed, I have wobbly windows working (can't use a PC without wobbly windows!), and life is generally good. I have a problem when I connect a secondary monitor. Performance is killed (everything becomes laggy and jerky) and my laptop sits on the right-hand side of the monitor, not the left. I'd like to know how to turn off the Laptop's monitor so I'm just using the external monitor. How can I do this using the Open Source Radeon drivers? I can't find a GUI management tool, and there's no longer an xorg.conf. What to do?
