• How to repair a corrupted Excel file

  I'm trying to restore some files for a friend who messed up a USB stick by pulling it out of the computer too soon. By searching invisible partitions I was able to restore the files. All files are intact, except 1 excel file that seems to be corrupted. I've googled about ways to repair an Excel file, because the default repair options in Excel 2003-2010 do not work for this file. I've came across a numerous third-party apps, of which the one seemes to be able to do the job: Recovery Toolbox for Excel. Of-course, this and all other apps I found require a purchase to actually repair the file. It seems a bit silly to pay 30 dollars for a one time thing, and something that is not for myself. So, I would like to keep that as a last-resort option. Is there anything I can try to fix this? I've attached a screenshot of how the file looks when I open it on my OSX when converted to a HTML file (to view the code), for the option that it could be a character set problem.

  I am looking for a solution for a project i am working on. We are developing a websystem where people can upload their files and other people can download it. (similar to rapidshare.com model) Problem is, some files can be demanded much more than other files. The scenerio is like: I have uploaded my birthday video and shared it with all of my friend, I have uploaded it to myproject.com and it was stored in one of the cluster which has 100mbit connection. Problem is, once all of my friends want to download the file, they cant download it since the bottleneck here is 100mbit which is 15MB per second, but i got 1000 friends and they can only download 15KB per second. I am not taking into account that the hdd is serving same files. My network infrastrucre is as follows: 1 gbit server(client) and connected to 4 Nodes of storage servers that have 100mbit connection. 1gbit server can handle the 1000 users traffic if one of storage node can stream more than 15MB per second to my 1gbit (client) server and visitor will stream directly from client server instead of storage nodes. I can do it by replicating the file into 2 nodes. But i dont want to replicate all files uploadded to my network since it is costing much more. So i need a cloud based system, which will push the files into replicated nodes automatically when demanded to those files are high, and when the demand is low, they will delete from other nodes and it will stay in only 1 node. I have looked to gluster and asked in their irc channel that, gluster cant do such a thing. It is only able to replicate all the files or none of the files. But i need it the cluster software to do it automatically. Any solutions ? (instead of recommending me amazon s3) S

• SSH Connection Error : No route to host

  There are three machines in this scenario: Desktop A : [email protected] Laptop A : [email protected] Machine B : [email protected] All the machines have Ubuntu 11.04 (Desktop A is a 64bit one) and have both openssh-server and openssh-client. Now when I try to connect Desktop A to Laptop A or vice-versa by ssh [email protected] I get an error as port 22: No route to host in both the cases. I own both the machines, now if I try same commands from my friend's machine, i.e. via Desktop B, I can access both my Laptop and Desktop. But if I try to access Desktop B from my Laptop or by Desktop I get port 22: Connection timed out I even tried changing ssh port no. in ssh_config file but no success. Note: that 'Laptop A' uses WiFi connection while 'Machine A' uses Ethernet Connection and 'Machine B' is on an entirely different network. Laptop A && Desktop A - Router/Nano_Rcvr provided to me by ISP. • Adding more drives to a drive array

  I have a friend who has two servers, a Dell 1800 and an HP 350 ML G5, both have SAS drive arrays. The Dell is a 3.5" and the HP is a 2.5". They currently only have 3 drives in each array. We want to add additional drives, but they do not appear to have caddies, just "fake" covers. I haven't been able to take a good look at them, so I'm not sure what I need to do here. Are the "sockets" just there, and I can buy additional caddies and just stick them in? Or do I have to buy some kind of caddy adapter? Also, i'm thinking of just going 2.5" in the new server, so is there a 2.5" adapter caddy that will fit in the 3.5" chassis for the Dell, so I can use 2.5" drives in the 3.5" chassis? Can I buy 6GB/s drives and add them to the 3GB/s controller? The reason is that we're going to replace both computers in a year or so, and we want to bring the drives with. So rather than buy 3GB/s drives, we just want to buy 6GB/s drives so they can be used in the new server.

• Only one domain is not resolving via Windows DNS server at multiple locations, but is at others

  I'm having quite a weird issue. Had mail delivery issues to a specific domain. After looking closer, I realized that the DNS for that domain isn't resolving via the in-house Windows 2003 SP2 DNS server. C:\>nslookup foodmix.net Server: DC.DOMAIN.com Address: 10.1.1.1 DNS request timed out. timeout was 2 seconds. DNS request timed out. timeout was 2 seconds. *** Request to DC.DOMAIN.com timed-out (DC.DOMAIN.com and 10.1.1.1 are generic values to replace the actual ones) Even if I run this nslookup from the DC.DOMAIN.com server, I get the same result. However, all other requests are working as they should. I had a sysadmin friend try this DNS lookup on servers at several companies that he consults for (which are also Windows 2003 AD servers). The weird thing is some of these were having the same exact issue. However using public DNS servers work. I have tried clearing the DNS cache, restarting the server, restarting the services, etc. Nothing has worked. One weird event I noticed in the DNS Server Event Logs that might be related is an event ID of 5504 with the following description: The DNS server encountered an invalid domain name in a packet from 192.33.4.12. The packet will be rejected. The event data contains the DNS packet. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. In the data section below, I can see the following mentioned: ns2.webhostingstar.com Which happens to be the nameserver for the domain in question. Several discussion threads and a MS KB have pointed to disabling EDNS. I have done this via "dnscmd /config /enableednsprobes 0" and it has not fixed the issue.

• Computer randomly shuts itself off

  I have not been able to determine a pattern for why this happens, despite my best efforts. I've attempted to run it on full power with Prime95 and this doesn't trigger a restart. Generally the restarts occur while I'm playing games, watching videos, or even just having multiple tabs open in a browser. However, I often play processor intense games for hours without any restarts occurring, and sometimes they'll happen 3-4 times in an hour during less intense activity, so I don't think that is the problem. I imagine it has something to do with overheating or power consumption so I've been monitoring CPU temperature and cleaning with compressed air, but the problem keeps happening. I don't know how to track power consumption, and assume that this is the problem. Whenever this occurs, the sound gets stuck in a short loop of whatever was playing at the time, though restarts also occur when nothing is playing. • How do I send e-mails with attachments to a Microsoft WebTV user?

  my friend uses Microsoft WebTV (e-mail address ends with @webtv.net) and I'd like to send him an e-mail with a picture attached to it. We went through a series of attempts one of which ended up a success, all others a failure. He just can't see my e-mail in his mailbox, when it contains an attachment. E-mails without attachments always go through all right. What seemed to help in the first successful case, was that he added my e-mail address to his address book and my e-mail suddenly showed up. Seemed to have been delivered before but hidden. He kept my address in his address book however, it didn't help with the following trials. He did look into his junk folder, nothing there. I made sure the file name contains no spaces. It's a regular jpeg, named something-like-this.jpg I downsized it to have only about 50k, as I've read somewhere that that's a limit. I actually doubt this piece of information, because I think the successful attempt was larger. webtv.net contains zero information. I watched their video demo for the e-mail client, so I at least know how the user interface looks like. I've never laid my hands on the real thing. I'm an advanced user myself (a programmer) but I can't wrap my mind around this. He on the other hand, is a very technically inexperienced user and because he's half way across the globe, I can't come and look over his shoulder. He doesn't have a computer, afaik there's no way I could see what he sees. Any ideas on how to debug this? Thanks for your time, guys. P.S. • SSD not detected on boot up running windows 7, with installed blank hdd

  I have recently built a PC for a friend, after the original system build, which included a 60GB primary SSD and a secondary 1TB HDD. I kept getting blue screens of death and kernel power errors, after investigation it was revealed that a faulty power cable and insufficient thermal paste provided with the included heat sink was the cause. This resolved the problem but after 3 months I received a phone call saying that the PC was not starting at the point of loading the operating system, with an NTLDR error. I had an idea of the cause, and after the user removed the HDD the computer started up with no issues, then I asked him to power off and reattach the HDD, and this completely resolved the issue; beforehand even restarting would not fix it. He does not have a surge protector and I thought that maybe some registry corruption had occurred due to a power surge, this might be a stupid answer though. Any ideas to what occurred with the machine would be most appreciated. No other issues have been found since the initial fault. The PC uses Windows 7 Home Premium installed on the SSD.

• Windows 8 preinstall downgrade to Win 7: UEFI problems :/

  I have a friend who has a Hp Laptop with UEFI booting. He locked himself out of windows 8 (forgot his password)... so he called me. Well after trying to use the latest version of chntpw in UBCD5.2.6, i came to the conclusion i needed to wipe the drive and install windows 7. A little googling suggested using certain versions of chntpw, but i decided to not waste the time burning endless CDs. Anyway, He agreed to installing Win7 "I hate the big tile thingys". So i attacked with Gparted. Wiped the whole drive. Set flags to boot. Set part table as MBR. However upon trying to install win7, it still claimed i had a GPT style disk. unable to install. the only thing i can think of I'm doing wrong is not changing the bios/UEFI to legacy... My question is, If I enable legacy, somehow get the drive to actually be MBR, and use my X86 DVD, should I be good? Is there some common glitches ppl miss when dealing with GPT/EFI/UEFI? I need answers cuz he now has a blank laptop which I am responsible for. Another question. windows 8 came installed on a GPT disk. SO WHY WHEN I BOOT THE INSTALL DVD DOES IT SAY IT CANT INSTALL TO A GPT STYLE DISK??? WTF??? talk about the bleeding edge man.

• Change to different user, or let different user execute a command

  I have a problem. There is a server which I can access with an account by ssh, lets say WG. Now there is a folder with the following permissions. drwxr-s---+ 855 vvz www-data 20K Aug 21 17:56 pictures I want to copy this folder using rsync, however since I am not the user www-data but WG I cannot execute rsync. So I want www-data to execute a rsync command. However, I do not posses sudo powers. My friend however tells me that I am actually able to execute the rsync command as www-data, but he will not tell me how. I asked him for some clues and he told me that it had something to do with reverse shell (which I figured out to be that you connect by ssh to your server and then you connect back to your own server, or something). I also asked if it was by-design or actually a flaw in the system. He tells me it is both. Furthermore I think it has something to do with the group permissions. If I just make sure that I am with the group permissions then I can also read the files. Anybody has a clue?

  I had a RAID 1 on my system which has a Gigabyte GA 8N SLI motherboard with a Nvidia chipset.(Nvidia Raid IDE ROM BIOS 4.84) When the system was working probably there used to be an icon on the system try which showed my two RAID disks. Bu after my friend accidentally clicked on the "Remove drive safely" icon while trying to disconnect her USB, I noticed that the RAID system wasn't working. After a reboot there was suddenly a failure message during boot screen. When I enter the Nvidia RAID setup utility (F10) I can see that both drives are degraded and that won't change even if I get into them and press R for Rebuild. Other options are only Delete and Exit. When I boot to Windows (XP Pro 32 Bit) I can see both my disks with the same data on each of them but my RAID 1 is broken. It's a relief to see that at least my RAID 1 was active but it's annoying not being able to rebuild it. Is there a way where I can rebuild my RAID 1 without having to delete the array and build it again? Cause I don't want to backup 400 Gigs of data and then recopy it to my drives... (Disks 2 x Seagate ST3500418 AS SATA Drives)

• How to slave a 3.5" 500gb SATA external hard drive (Western Digital) to my Dell Inspiron laptop

  I have a 3.5" Western Digital My Book 500gb external hard drive. I gave it to a friend of mine, and he broke the USB port in it. I went to a nearby comp repair shop and had him solder the thing, and it didn't detect when it when I plugged it into my Dell Inspiron laptop. I recently saw about the 3.5" SATA to USB enclosure, so I went to check it. Strangely, when its placed in the enclosure, its not detecting in Windows. Also, when it was put as secondary (I'm guessing slave) to the shop fellow's desktop, it shows up in the BIOS and while starting, but then again doesn't show in Windows 7. The guy told me that I need to use a data recovery tool to get my data back. P.S. Whe WD hard drive doesnt have an OS, just data. So my question is: Can I slave the drive to my Dell laptop and try to recover the data, and if so how? I would really appreciate it any help, thanks in advance.

• No partition on USB Flash Drive?

  A friend gave me a corrupted USB memory stick to try recovery data from. But I've had some unusual results, so thought I'd share to see if anyone is familiar with this problem... First off I just tried opening from my own PC. Windows prompted to Format the drive, which I of course declined Downloaded TestDisk to anaylsis the drive. And right away I noticed something strange, on the listed drives it comes up as Disk /dev/sdc - 6144 B - USB Flash Drive That's right, the first USB flash drive smaller than a floppy disk!? Moving on anyway... first anaylsis comes up with: Partition sector doesn't have the endmark 0xAA55 TestDisk's Quick Search gave no results, moved on to Deeper Search: No partition found or selected for recovery This left me stumped. I tired a couple of other programs with no success I did manage to get a backup image, but it was just as small as TestDisk indicated, so nothing of use on it After a few hours trying various suggestions from other sources, I gave in and just tried formatting the drive. But returned the message: Windows was unable to complete the format. From googling that, the suggestion was to delete the partition. But there is no partition to delete in this case. most recently I've tried formatting from cmd, and got this result: Format D: /FS:FAT32 The type of the file system is RAW The new file system is FAT32 Verifying 0M 11 bad sectors were encountered during the format. These sectors cannot be guaranteed to have been cleaned The volume is too small for FAT32 Anyone got any suggestions? UPDATE: As per suggestion from @Karen, I tried running a CLEAN from DISKPART, results as follows DiskPart has encountered an error: The request could not be preformed because of an I/O device error.

• Nginx settings are screwing up my Drupal form submissions, how do I fix?

  How do I tell Nginx to "ignore" specific URLS or pages on my web site? I run a Drupal site where anonymous visitors get served via NGINX while logged in users get served via Apache. We do this to keep the load down and scale better. It works great, except, since we set up nginx, a good number of Drupal forms no longer work. For example, before installing Nginx, if you created a new article, then clicked "edit" and edited the article. You could click "save" and your changes to the article would be saved. After setting up nginx, when you make edits and then click "save," the page simple refreshes, but now with "nginx-index.php" inserted into the URL. And your changes to the form were not actually saved to the database. So if you go to edit an article, you'll be on domain.com/node/##/edit or something like that. When you try to save your changes to the form, you'll wind up at domain.com/nginx-index.php?q=node/##/edit. And your changes will not be saved. There is a way around this, but only for administrative users. If you go to a form where this problem is happening, then comment or comment-out three lines in our settings.php file, the form will save properly. Those three lines are: // 'cache_form' = array( // 'engine' = 'db', // ), If they're commented, you uncomment them, them save the form. If they're uncommented, you comment them out and save the form. Obviously, this sucks. My friend who set up our server (and then left the country) told me that there are some Nginx settings that can tell it to "ignore" certain URLs or pages which could work here. How do I do this and where do I do it?

• Transfer of ownership of Windows 7

  I am thinking of purchasing a copy of Windows 7 via either ebay or GumTree. I am unsure as to how the product key works. A close friend of mine is warning me against buying it from ebay as he is suggesting that once it has been used, the operating system registers itself on microsoft servers using the serial number of the motherboard of the system where it has been installed. This means once installed on one machine you wont be able to install it on another machine. Now i am struggling to believe that an operating system can only be installed on one machine. Can someone please explain exactly how this works. I can see a lot of copies being sold on Ebay which are used. I used the 'Ask a question' option and the majority of the users are saying that i should be able to use it. If someone buys Windows 7 from the shop, installs it on his PC but then decides that he wants to sell it can he not sell it? Will the person buying it not be able to use it? Does the person selling it have to somehow unregister it first? What do i need to look out for if buying it from Ebay? Thanks

• PHP Not Automatically Updating With ?reload=1

  A friend built a ranking system on his site and I am trying to host in on mine via wordpress and godaddy. It updates for him but when I load it to my site, it works for 6 hours, but as soon as the reload is supposed to occur, it errors and I get a 500 timeout error. Any idea why this might be happening? Any settings that I might need to change? Here is the top of the index.php file. I'm not sure which part of any of it is messing up. • cheap gigabit switch for small business

  my friend's business is currently borrowing my Adtran 1224R and is very happy with it. it's configured with a few VLANs to segment customers, internal traffic and public wifi. port 1 is a "trunk" port to the router, a chunky Linux box with iptables+NAT. they push a lot of traffic over the LAN (data backups) and really need gigabit. besides, I'd like my Adtran back :P my goal is to find a cheap(ish) switch that can function as a drop-in replacement. it looks like VLAN trunking is actually part of the 802.1q spec, so anything with VLAN support should cover the current trunk-to-router setup. it's nice to have both a web interface and SSH, but I can configure it either way if needed. things like the Netgear GS724T have caught my eye, but it seems like none of the hardware in the $300-500 range have really solid reviews. I'm concerned that "cheaper" hardware might not work for a network full of power users. does anyone have a recommendation for the Netgear GS724T or a switch that will meet my needs?

• How can see what processes makes my server slow?

  All my websites on my server are extremely slow or not loading at all. Even server admin (Plesk) will not load some times. There's been no changes to the sites for the last coupple of months. How can I see what processes is making my server slow? My environment looks like this: Server: VPS running Linux 2.8.x OS: Centos 5 Manage interface: Plesk 9.x Memmory: 1024MB CPU: 2.2GHz My websites run on PHP and MySQL. I finally managed to telnet (Putty + SSH) in to my server. Running top did not show any processes using more than max 2% CPU and none were using exesive memmory. I also got a friend to install a program that checks the core files, and all seemed fine. So I'm leaning towards network issues or some other server malfunction. But I'm not able to find out what can be wrong. Here are some answers to Sean Kimball: I don't run mail services on my server yet There are noe specific bandwidth peaks. But I think it's up and running. There are no processes running wild Where can I find avarage load? Telnet is disabled and I have to log in using SSH :)

• after building in more ram, bios/debian does nothing [closed]

  My private server has 2x1gb Ram working with a 64bit Debian and an Q6600 Intel. This runs 2 virtual mashines on it each one recives 512mb RAM. Which you can immagine is a bit tight for the hole system. Now i got 2x2gb ram from a friend. I'm not sure if thery are clocking at the same speed, but i'm sure my power adaptor is not on his limit and can handle that. So there are 2 ram sockets left at the mainboard. I shuted down the system and build in the 4 gigs and looked what happen. After pressing the start button, everything gets noisy as known BUT the screen shows nothing, not even the bios stuff it usally does. Why isn't the system booting? I can immagine that it does not direkt link between booting debian and the bios not showing a thing. Or is it Grub? I mounted the system disk, and i can see it, switch folders write stuff with "vim" it does not seems like there is a problem.

• Help in recovering partition

  Okay so i had one NTFS partition and i wanted to resize it, but while resizing it with partition magic some error occurred and now i am not able to enter in my partition anymore. I have slackware 13 also and i tried mounting the partition from there but it didn't succeed. One friend of mine came to my house with some live-cd os called backtrack3 and when he booted from cd, he was able to mount the damaged partition - and was able to read/write on it anywhere. I saw my files, they are all there, so nothing's erased just the partition is somehow damaged. But strange thing was that from backtrack we weren't able to mount some of the working partitions of my comp, and we could mount the damaged one. So i am asking for some help here: My files are all there, and i saw them from backtrack. What can i do to fix the partition so it would be usable from windows/slackware again ? Please tell me anything you've got because i have some important data on it. Thank you.

I know there's supposed to be a way you can boot the computer from the vista installation disc and create an admin account you can later login with, but her installation disc is in Australia and her laptop in London. Is there any other way to get in? Or would it be better to try and access just the harddrive? She's mainly concerned with getting all her data off it. As for how she lost the account, I'll let her explain in her words. :) My computer basically got some virus and now is up sh*t creek. it told me i had this cryptic thingy majiggy was missing and then this fake virus told me i needed to scan my computer. SO i tried to do malware thing but it kept shutting my computer down. ANYWAY...now its it will only open up with 'launch startup repair' and has got rid of my settings for logging in and wants me to be 'other user' which i have no password or username for'...so basically im stuffed. • How do I know if I managed to completely remove an undetected trojan?

  I catched a trojan that uses explorer.exe to reproduce itself in case of deletion of its autostart entry or main exe file in Programs/x. It had already tried to contact a suspicious server over explorer.exe, blocked that via my firewall. I: Removed the autostart entries from the registry Looked through my services if there was anything suspicious Deleted the trojan from Programs/ Went through System Volume Information to find a 2 month old explorer.exe and replaced the possibly infected one. There are no suspicious processes running now anymore (no duplicate explorer.exe) and nothing wants to connect this trojan owners sever either. I checked my system with several anti-malware programs too. What the trojan did: Started a second explorer.exe Always when I deleted the main trojan exe file it was reproduced (by the second explorer.exe) Always when I deleted the autostart entry it was reproduced by the explorer.exe too. When I terminated the suspicious explorer.exe, which used only half as much memory as the less suspicious one from Windows, a strange thing that I know from the computers in my Informatics class happened: A window popped up in the top left of my explorer-less desktop, titled "Personal settings for ... are ..." that obviously copied some files. Then both explorer.exes started again and the trojan was everywhere again. What did the trojan actually do to get explorer to rescue it? Is my PC clean of this newish trojan now? What are the other locations I should check for the trojan? The trjoan doesn't seem very high-level, could it have changed other system files or is the autostart entry vital for it? • Install Peppermint OS three on Asus EeePC

  I just had a new Asus EeePC R051CX. Out of the box, the installed OS is Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, but I am trying to install Peppermint OS three (as single boot). Problem. Once on live CD (well, live USB stick...), I'm in trouble in both following situations: Try Peppermint OS Live In this case, the first thing I get is a message reading The system is running in low-graphics mode Your screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure these yourself. I can solely press "return" to accept, then I have a list of 4 options to answer the question "What would you like to do?". But I simply can't do anything at this moment, except switching to console mode or rebooting (keyboard / mouse controls don't allow me to do anything else). Install Peppermint OS Something I really don't understand... it launches the Ubuntu Recovery Media (which was already installed when I received the device)! Also, it says in the bottom ERROR: This recovery media only functions on Ubuntu systems. All I can do is quit (that is, reboot). One last important thing that comes to my mind: this stick worked just fine on the other computers I've tried it on. I really hope someone could bring me the light, a friend of mine told me how cool this OS is for EeePCs. Don't want to give up! Thanks. Edit I finally could install Peppermint, but not by understanding why I couldn't do it the logical way. Instead, I reinstalled Ubuntu myself (erasing the factory one). Then, I could simply boot on my live USB and perform a fresh install of Peppermint. So, I still don't know how and why the mentioned problem occurred.

• Windows xp blinking under score after bios

  so this is for an older pc I have to repair for a friend. The pc has an hdd of about 60 something gb, It uses win xp and let's say 60-70% of the boots it hangs on showing only an underscore bilking line after bios screen, rest of the times it boots fine or the computer shuts down on xp loading screen. Sometimes if you let it alone while the underscore is blinking, it will boot after a while, like a few minutes, some times it won't boot at all even if you give him more time, like one hour. When it boots successfully the pc seems to work fine. I think it's a bad hard disk and i'm about to suggest buying a new one and switching it but I don't have enough experience and i would hate making him buy a new hdd and not solving the problem. anyone has any tips? I know there are other topics about blinking underscores or cursors while xp is booting but the issues about the pc shutting itself down or sometimes booting really freaks me out. Can't format everything and re install until about 10 days from now, cause the dude has some program for his business on this pc and I have to migrate it when the next computer arrives, however he needs to use it until then. so please advise, thx.
