• Accessing a share point site using the object model.

  Hi I am trying to access a share point site using the SP object model from a console application. I am trying to do something like this.. SPSite site = new SPSite(sitePath) //Operations go here This works fine when the share point site and the console app are on the same machine. However when the console app and the site are on different machines, I get an error "The Web application at "http://server/url" could not be found. Verify that you have typed the URL correctly. If the URL should be serving existing content, the system administrator may need to add a new request URL mapping to the intended application" Here are the things that I have already done: 1) I have tried accessing the site via both IP address as well as machine name, assuming that it could be a DNS resolution issue. 2) Initially I impersonated using a farm admin account, still i could not access. Then I added myself as the farm admin, still no joy. 4) The site is accessible via IE. So it is not a permission issue I guess. 5) I have tried almost all the solutions suggested by various links obtained by googling the error message. I am trying this on share point 2010. A similar issue occurs on 2007 also. Sometimes its kind of frustrating to do SharePoint development , since I get the feeling of stumbling from one error to the next, with no clue as to what could be wrong and the error messages not being helpful in the least :(

• How can I set the default value for a custom "Number" field in SharePoint?

  I created a custom field for a content type I am creating using the XML below. <field ID="{GUID}" Required="False" DisplayName="Likes" Name="Likes" Type="Number" SourceID="http://schemas.microsoft.com/sharepoint/v3"><default>0</default></field> The field is meant to be used as a counter of sorts, and will be incremented programmatically. But, I can't get the value to default to "0" when a new item is created. However, for some reason, when I create a new column manually using the Site Collection settings page and configure it to default to "0" it works as it should. So far, I've tried the following tactics: I removed the "default" element from the field definition, and set the "DefaultValue" attribute on the content type definition. I exported a definition for the manually-created, working column (using an Imtech STSADM tool). Then, I added it to my field definitions XML and modified the IDs so that I could add it to my content type. When I did this, it still didn't work, even though it was exported from a working column! Any idea why this isn't working for me?

• Good case for a Null Object Pattern? (Provide some service with a mailservice)

  For a website I'm working on, I made an Media Service object that I use in the front end, as well as in the backend (CMS). This Media Service object manipulates media in a local repository (DB); it provides the ability to upload/embed video's and upload images. In other words, website visitors are able to do this in the front end, but administrators of the site are also able to do this in the backend. I'ld like this service to mail the administrators when a visitor has uploaded/embedded a new medium in the frontend, but refrain from mailing them when they upload/embed a medium themself in the backend. So I started wondering whether this is a good case for passing a null object, that mimicks the mail funcionality, to the Media Service in the backend. I thought this might come in handy when they decide the backend needs to have implemented mail functionality as well. In simplified terms I'ld like to do something like this: Frontend: $mediaService = new MediaService( new MediaRepository(), new StandardMailService() ); Backend: $mediaService = new MediaService( new MediaRepository(), new NullMailService() ); How do you feel about this? Does this make sense? Or am I setting myself up for problems down the road?

• Changing <object> height and width works in Chrome but not Firefox or IE. Why?

  I am making a site with two Youtube videos. These videos use the raw embed code from Youtube. The site's design doesn't work with any of the default Youtube sizes, so I am writing code to automatically resize the video. Here is my code. I have tried using setattribute, for loops, adjusting both and , single-quotes and double-quotes, etc. Any ideas what is going wrong?

• How can I take advantage of IObservable/IObserver to get rid of my "god object"?

  In a system I'm currently working on, I have many components which are defined as interfaces and base classes. Each part of the system has some specific points where they interact with other parts of the system. For example, the data readying component readies some data which eventually needs to go to the data processing portion, the communications component needs to query different components for their status for relaying to the outside, etc. Currently, I glue these parts of the system together using a "god object", or an object with intimate knowledge of different parts of the system. It registers with events over here and shuttles the results to methods over there, creates a callback method here and returns the result of that method over there, and passes many requests through a multi-threaded queue for processing because it "knows" certain actions have to run on STA threads, etc. While its convenient, it concerns me that this one type knows so much about how everybody else in the system is designed. I'd much prefer a more generic hub that can be given instances which can expose events or methods or callbacks or that can consume these. I've been seeing more about the IObservable/IObserver features of the reactive framework and that are being rolled into .NET 4.0 (I believe). Can I leverage this pattern to help replace my "god object"? How should I go about doing this? Are there any resources for using this pattern for this specific purpose?

• In Sharepoint, how do I update the name of a folder in a document library using the web service API?

  I'm using the UpdateListItems method of the Lists web service, and I can update an item in just about any kind of list, and folders in non-document library lists, but I can't seem to update the name of a folder in a document library. I must use the web services API, as sharepoint is not local. If my update batch looks like this: <Batch OnError="Continue" PreCalc="TRUE" ListVersion="0" ViewName=""> <Method ID="1" Cmd="Update"> <Field Name="ID">2</Field> <Field Name="Title">MyUpdatedFolderName</Field> <Field Name="FileLeafRef">MyUpdatedFolderName</Field> </Method> </Batch> I get no exception but the name is unchanged.   Hi, I am using the following code to create a new site: newWeb = SPContext.GetContext(HttpContext.Current).Web.Webs.Add(newSiteUrl, newSiteName, null, (uint)1033, siteTemplate, true, false); try { newWeb.Update(); } NewSiteUrl and newSiteName are values from two textboxes and on whichever site I use this code (in a web part) the new site will be a subsite to this site. I would now like to be able to select a parent site so that the new site can sit anywhere in the site collection, not just as a subsite to the site where I use the web part. I created the following function to get all the sites in the site collection and populate a drop down with the name and url for every site private void getSites() { SPSite oSiteCollection = SPContext.Current.Site; SPWebCollection collWebsite = oSiteCollection.AllWebs; for (int i = 0; i < collWebsite.Count; i++) { ddlParentSite.Items.Add(new ListItem(collWebsite[i].Title, collWebsite[i].Url)); } oSiteCollection.Dispose(); } If the user selects a site in the dropdown, is it possible to use that URL in newSiteUrl so decide where the new site should be? I don't get it to work really and the new site still becomes a subsite to the current one. I guess it has to do with HttpContext.Current? Any ideas on how I should do it instead? It's the first time I write custom web parts and the sharepoint object model is a bit overwhelming at the moment. Thanks in advance.

• Consuming Web Services requiring Authentication from behind Proxy server

  Hi All, I've seen a number of post about Proxy Authentication, but none that seams to address this problem. I'm building a SharePoint Web Service consuming desktop application, using Java, JAX-WS in NetBeans. I have a working prototype, that can query the server for authentication mode, successfully authenticate and retrieve a list of web site. However, if I run the same app from a network that is behind a proxy server (the proxy does not require authentication), then I'm running into trouble. The normal -dhttp.proxyHost ... settings does not seam to help any. But I have found that by creating a ProxySelector class and setting it as default, I can regain access to the authentication web service, but I still can't retrieve the list of web sites from the SharePoint server. It's almost as if the authentication I provide is going to the proxy rather than the SharePoint server. Anyone have any experience on how to make this work? I have put the source text java class files of a demo app up, showing the issue at the following urls (it's a bit to long even in the short demo form to post here). link text When running the code from a network behind a proxy server, I successfully retrieve the Authentication mode from the server, but the request for the Web Site list generates an exception originating at: com.sun.xml.internal.ws.transport.http.client .HttpClientTransport.readResponseCodeAndMessage(HttpClientTransport.java:201) The output from the source when no proxy is on the network is listed below: Successfully retrieved the SharePoint WebService response for Authentication SharePoint authentication method is: WINDOWS Calling Web Service to retrieve list of web site. • SharePoint Server 2007 Stops Responding to External Requests

  We have a SharePoint2007 server running on a Windows Server 2003 Box. The box itself is quite old but has not experienced any weird issues. Recently SharePoint has begun to show some strange behavior. One of the most annoying things is that once in a while, the sharepoint sever stops responding to requests outside our network. Internally, you can still browse everything that has to do with sharepoint but outside, nothing. If i reset the server it will start responding again. I am just not sure what makes it stop responding to users on the outside in the first place. Resetting the WWW publishing service does no good.

  I have a domain model, persisted in a database, which represents a graph. A graph consists of nodes (e.g. NodeTypeA, NodeTypeB) which are connected via branches. The two generic elements (nodes and branches will have properties). A graph will be sent to a computation engine. To perform computations the engine has to be initialised like so (simplified pseudo code): Engine Engine = new Engine() ; Object ID1 = Engine.AddNodeTypeA(TypeA.Property1, TypeA.Property2, …, TypeA.Propertyn); Object ID2 = Engine.AddNodeTypeB(TypeB.Property1, TypeB.Property2, …, TypeB.Propertyn); Engine.AddBranch(ID1,ID2); Finally the computation is performed like this: Engine.DoSomeComputation(); I am just wondering, if there are any relevant design patterns out there, which help to achieve the above using good design principles.   I've been told that code reuse and abstraction in OOP is far more difficult to do than it is in FP, and that all the claims that have been made about Object Orientedness (for lack of a better term) being great at reusing code have been flat out lies So I was wondering if anyone here could tell me why that is, and perhaps show me some code to back up these claims, I'm not saying I don't believe you Functional programmers, it's just that I've been "indoctrinated" to think Object Orientedly, and thus can't (yet) think Functionally enough to see it myself To quote Jimmy Hoffa (from an answer to one of my previous questions): The cake is a lie, code reuse in OO is far more difficult than in FP. • SharePoint 2010 Search - not search additional content sources

  I've got SP 2010 crawling a secondary intranet system that we'll run in parallel as part of a long running migration to SharePoint when it releases. Whilst it's crawling the pages without problem I can't see how to get the results to appear as part of the Quick Search results if the user does a search from the little search dialog box on the home page. Searches completed within a My Sites pages lists results from port the SharePoint installation and the external content source. Searches from the main search dialog only list results of SharePoint items. I tried adding the drop down option to select the site to search but this list only includes the name of the current site and doesn't offer an 'All Sites' scope option which I think would include the content. What am I doing wrong?

• Mobile 3D engine renders alpha as full-object transparency

  I am running a iOS project using the isgl3d framework for showing pod files. I have a stylish car with 0.5 alpha windows, that I wish to render on a camera background, seeking some augmented reality goodness. The alpha on the windows looks okay, but when I add the object, I notice that it renders the entire object transparently, where the windows are. Including interior of the car. Like so (in example, keyboard can be seen through the dashboard, seats and so on. should be solid) The car interior is a seperate object with alpha 1.0. I would rather not show a "ghost car" in my project, but I haven't found a way around this. Have anyone encountered the same issue, and eventually reached a solution ?

  I got into an interesting internet argument about getter and setter methods and encapsulation. Someone said that all they should do is an assignment (setters) or a variable access (getters) to keep them "pure" and ensure encapsulation. Am I right that this would completely defeat the purpose of having getters and setters in the first place and validation and other logic (without strange side-effects of course) should be allowed? When should validation happen? When setting the value, inside the setter (to protect the object from ever entering an invalid state - my opinion) Before setting the value, outside the setter Inside the object, before each time the value is used Is a setter allowed to change the value (maybe convert a valid value to some canonical internal representation)?

  Hi all, I have two object-aligned bounding boxes (i.e. not axis aligned, they rotate with the object). I'd like to know if two object-aligned boxes overlap. (Edit: note - I'm using an axis-aligned bounding box test to quickly discard distant objects, so it doesn't matter if the quad routine is a little slower.) My boxes are stored as four x,y points. I've searched around for answers, but I can't make sense of the variable names and algorithms in examples to apply them to my particular case. Can someone help show me how this would be done, in a clear and simple way? Thanks. (The particular language isn't important, C-style pseudo code is OK.)

• Figuring a max repetitive sub-tree in an object tree

  I am trying to solve a problem of finding a max repetitive sub-tree in an object tree. By the object tree I mean a tree where each leaf and node has a name. Each leaf has a type and a value of that type associated with that leaf. Each node has a set of leaves / nodes in certain order. Given an object tree that - we know - has a repetitive sub-tree in it. By repetitive I mean 2 or more sub-trees that are similar in everything (names/types/order of sub-elements) but the values of leaves. No nodes/leaves can be shared between sub-trees. Problem is to identify these sub-trees of the max height. I know that the exhaustive search can do the trick. I am rather looking for more efficient approach.

• What is the state of the art in OOP?

  I used to do a lot of object-oriented programming and found myself reading up a lot on how to do it well. When C++ was the dominant OOP language there was a very different set of best practices than have emerged since. Some of the newer ideas I know of are BDD, internal DSLs, and the importing of ideas from functional programming. My question is: is there any consensus on the best way to develop object-oriented software today in the more modern languages such as C#, Ruby, and Python? And what are those practices? For instance, I rather like the idea of stateless objects but how many are actually using that in practice? Or, is the state of the art to deemphasize the importance of OOP? This might be the case for some Python programmers but would be difficult for Rubyists.

• Resolving an App-Relative URL without a Page Object Reference

  If you've worked with ASP.NET before then you've almost certainly seen an application-relative URL like ~/SomeFolder/SomePage.aspx.  The tilde at the beginning is a stand in for the application path, and it can easily be resolved using the Page object's ResolveUrl method: string url = Page.ResolveUrl("~/SomeFolder/SomePage.aspx"); There are times, however, when you don't have a page object available and you need to resolve an application relative URL.  Assuming you have an HttpContext object available, the following method will accomplish just that: public static string ResolveAppRelativeUrl(string url) {      return url.Replace("~", System.Web.HttpContext.Current.Request.ApplicationPath); } It just replaces the tilde with the application path, which is essentially all the ResolveUrl method does.
