  • Object reference not set to an instance of an object - how to find the offending object name in the

    - by Jason
This is the bane of my programming existence. After deploying an application, when this error crops up, no amount of debug dump tells you WHAT object was not instantiated. I have the call stack, that's great, it tells me roughly where the object is, but is there any way to get .NET to tell me the actual name of the object? If you catch them while debugging, of course the program breaks right on the offending creature, but if it happens after the program is in the wild, good luck. There has to be a way. I've explored the exceptions returned in these instances and there is just nothing helpful.

  • create a new model instance version instead of update

    - by pablo
Hi, I have a model with a version field - autocreate timestamp. When a model instance is being saved I want to create a new instance with a new timestamp instead of updating the old model instance. Is it possible? I thought of overriding the model save() method but I don't know how to create a new instance without creating a infinite save() loop. Thanks

  • Is this Javascript object literal key restriction strictly due to parsing?

    - by George Jempty
Please refer to the code below, when I "comment in" either of the commented out lines, it causes the error (in IE) of "':' expected". So then is my conclusion correct, that this inability to provide a reference to an object value, as an object key in a string literal; is this strictly an interpreter/parsing issue? Is this a candidate for an awful (or at least "bad") "part" of Javascript, in contrast to Crockford's "good parts"? <script> var keys = {'ONE': 'one'}; //causes error: //var obj1 = {keys.ONE: 'value1'}; //var obj1 = {keys['ONE']: 'value1'}; //works var obj1 = {}; obj1[keys.ONE] = 'value1'; //also works var key_one = keys.ONE; var obj2 = {key_one: 'value1'}; </script>

  • Question about domain models & their visibility...

    - by Another SO User
I was involved in an interesting debate about the visibility of domain models & was wondering if people here have any good guidance. Per my understanding of MDA, we need not expose the domain model throughout the application layers & tiers The reason being that any change to the domain model has an impact in the overall application The wise thing to do would be to expose light-weight object (DTO's) which are a small sub-set of the domain model to abstract the actual model On the flip side, any change to the domain model would mean changing various DTO's throughout the application for the change to be visible, while if we do expose the domain model, then the change is in a single location Hope to see some comments & thoughts about this. Appreciate all the help!

Hi I am using the forms.ModelForm to create my form. I want to be able to show the manytomany field in both model forms, how do I do this? If the manytomany relationship is defined in the model it is fine and just appears but if it is not in the model (but is still linked via the other model) it does not appear. Hope this makes sense. How can I make it show up? Thanks

  • Is this a good way to identify the type of a javascript object?

    - by FK82
    Apparently neither instanceof nor typeof deliver in terms of correctly identifying the type of every javascript object. I have come up with this function and I'm looking for some feedback: function getType() { var input = arguments[0] ; var types = ["String","Array","Object","Function","HTML"] ; //!! of the top of my head for(var n=0; n < types.length; n++) { if( input.constructor.toString().indexOf( types[n] ) != -1) { document.write( types[n] ) ; } } } Thanks for reading!

  • Mapping tables from an existing database to an object -- is Hibernate suited?

    - by Bernhard V
Hello! I've got some tables in an existing database and I want to map them to a Java object. Actually it's one table that contains the main information an some other tables that reference to such a table entry with a foreign key. I don't want to store objects in the database, I only want to read from it. The program should not be allowed to apply any changes to the underlying database. Currently I read from the database with 5 JDBC sql queries and set the results then on an object. I'm now looking for a less code intensive way. Another goal is the learning aspect. Is Hibernate suitable for this task, or is there another ORM framework that better fits my requirement?

  • JQuery selectors select from an html object other than from document root?

    - by orangebrainer
jQuery selectors select from the document. How do I select from somewhere else other than root? Say I want to select some children from an html object. For this function dothis(obj) { $j("#tabs").removeClass(); $j("#tabs>ul").removeClass(); $j("#tabs>ul>li>a").each(function() { var tabNum = $j(this).attr("href").replace("#", ""); var tabContent = $j("div[id=" + tabNum + "]"); tabContent.removeClass(); $(tabContent).before("<br><h1>" +$j(this).text() + "</h1>\n" ); }); $j("#tabs>ul").each(function() { $j(this).empty();//remove Ul links on top }); } I want to reference the selectors from an html Object (obj) i passed into as argument, instead of selecting from document. • How to fix “Collection was modified; enumeration operation may not execute. “when using Copy.asmx in SharePoint2010

    - by ybbest
Problem: In my current project, we use copy.asmx web services in SharePoint2010 to upload a document to a document library. In one of the document library, when uploading a document with a choice field, it blows up and the error message is Collection was modified; enumeration operation may not execute. Analysis: After some research , we found out the problem is that we have 2 content types that both have a field called Document Type , although the internal name are different but the display name are exactly the same and this cause the problem. I am still not too sure why, it could possibly a SharePoint bug. Solution: After rename one of the field display name to a different name, it works like a charm. You can download source code with the problem here and source code without the problem here.

  • Enable Claims based Auth on a SP2010 website, after it has been provisioned

    - by Sahil Malik
Ad:: SharePoint 2007 Training in .NET 3.5 technologies (more information). When you provision a web app in SP2010, you can choose it to use Claims Based Auth or Classic Auth right through the GUI.  However, after you have provisioned a web app, there is no GUI to switch from Classic to Claims based. So the below powershell script will let you convert a SP2010 website to claims based auth after it has been provisioned. 1: $w = Get-SPWebApplication "http://sp2010" 2: $w.UseClaimsAuthentication = "True"; 3: $w.Update() The user running the above script should be a member of the SharePoint_Shell_Access role on the config DB, and a member of the WSS_ADMIN_WPG local group. The sample below shows how to define a launch popup listener configured on the launchPopupListener property of the af:inputListOfValues component to filter a list of values. <af:inputListOfValues id="departmentIdId"    value="#{bindings.DepartmentId.inputValue}"                                          model="#{bindings.DepartmentId.listOfValuesModel}"    launchPopupListener="#{PopupLauncher.onPopupLaunch}" … >         … </af:inputListOfValues> A list of values is queried using a search binding that gets created in the PageDef file of a view when a lis of value component gets added. The managed bean code below looks this search binding up to then add a view criteria that filters the query. Note: There is no public API yet available for the FacesCtrlLOVBinding class, which is why I use the internal package class it in the example. public void onPopupLaunch(LaunchPopupEvent launchPopupEvent) {   BindingContext bctx = BindingContext.getCurrent();   BindingContainer bindings = bctx.getCurrentBindingsEntry();   FacesCtrlLOVBinding lov =        (FacesCtrlLOVBinding)bindings.get("DepartmentId");   ViewCriteriaManager vcm =   lov.getListIterBinding().getViewObject().getViewCriteriaManager();             //make sure the view criteria is cleared   vcm.removeViewCriteria(vcm.DFLT_VIEW_CRITERIA_NAME);   //create a new view criteria   ViewCriteria vc =          new ViewCriteria(lov.getListIterBinding().getViewObject());   //use the default view criteria name   //"__DefaultViewCriteria__"   vc.setName(vcm.DFLT_VIEW_CRITERIA_NAME);   //create a view criteria row for all queryable attributes   ViewCriteriaRow vcr = new ViewCriteriaRow(vc);   //for this sample I set the query filter to DepartmentId 60.   //You may determine it at runtime by reading it from a managed bean   //or binding layer   vcr.setAttribute("DepartmentId", 60);   //also note that the view criteria row consists of all attributes   //that belong to the LOV list view object, which means that you can   //filter on multiple attributes   vc.addRow(vcr);             lov.getListIterBinding().getViewObject().applyViewCriteria(vc); }  Note: Instead of using the vcm.DFLT_VIEW_CRITERIA_NAME name you can also define a custom name for the view criteria.

  • Sign on Experience with Office 365

    - by Sahil Malik
SharePoint 2010 Training: more information Office 365 offers two types of identities: · Microsoft Online Services cloud IDs (Cloud Identity): This is the default identity Microsoft provides you, requires no additional setup, you sign up for Office 365 and you are provided a credential. You can sign in using forms based authentication, the password policy etc. for which is stored in the cloud with the Office 365 service. The advantage obviously is no additional setup headache. The disadvantage? Yet another password to remember, and no hope of authenticated single sign on integration using this cloud identity with other services at least in the current version. · Federated IDs (Federated Identity): In companies with on-premises Active Directory, users can sign into Office 365 services using their Active Directory credentials. The corporate Active Directory authenticates the users, and stores and controls the password policy. The advantage here is plenty of single sign on possibilities and better user experience. The downside, more Read full article ....

  • How to find which w3wp.exe to attach when debugging your SharePiont2010 project

    - by ybbest
When debugging SharePoint2010 project, you need to attach w3wp.exe process, however there are often quite a few of them and it is very hard to figure out which one to attach. Today, I will show you how to find out which process to attach using a tool called process explorer. 1. Download the process explorer and run it after you download it. 2. Find the w3wp.exe processes under wininit.exe right-click the columns header and click Select Columns. 3. Include Command Line under Process Image. 4. Now you can see your IIS site name next to w3wp.exe, in my case I’d like to attach the “SharePoint – BenDev80″.You can see the PID of the process is 2920. 5. From the above process you know the process ID you’d like to attach is 2920, you can then go ahead to attach the process from Visual Studio.

  • Content Query Web Part and the Yes/No Field

    - by Bil Simser
The Content Query Web Part (CQWP) is a pretty powerful beast. It allows you to do multiple site queries and aggregate the results. This is great for rolling up content and doing some summary type reporting. Here’s a trick to remember about Yes/No fields and using the CQWP. If you’re building a news style site and want to aggregate say all the announcements that people tag a certain way, up onto the home page this might be a solution. First we need to allow a way for users of all our sites to mark an announcement for inclusion on our Intranet Home Page. We’ll do this by just modifying the Announcement Content type and adding a Yes/No field to it. There are alternate ways of doing this like building a new Announcement type or stapling a feature to all sites to add our column but this is pretty low impact and only affects our current site collection so let’s go with it for now, okay? You can berate me in the comments about the proper way I should have done this part. Go to the Site Settings for the Site Collection and click on Site Content Types under the Galleries. This takes you to the gallery for this site and all subsites. Scroll down until you see the List Content Types and click on Announcements. Now we’re modifying the Announcement content type which affects all those announcement lists that are created by default if you’re building sites using the Team Site template (or creating a new Announcements list on any site for that matter). Click on Add from new site column under the Column list. This will allow us to create a new Yes/No field that users will see in Announcement items. This field will allow the user to flag the announcement for inclusion on the home page. Feel free to modify the fields as you see fit for your environment, this is just an example. Now that we’ve added the column to our Announcements Content type we can go into any site that has an announcement list, modify that announcement and flag it to be included on our home page. See the new Featured column? That was the result of modifying our Announcements Content Type on this site collection. Now we can move onto the dirty part, displaying it in a CQWP on the home page. And here is where the fun begins (and the head scratching should end). On our home page we want to drop a Content Query Web Part and aggregate any Announcement that’s been flagged as Featured by the users (we could also add the filter to handle Expires so we don’t show old content so go ahead and do that if you want). First add a CQWP to the page then modify the settings for the web part. In the first section, Query, we want the List Type to be set to Announcements and the Content type to be Announcement so set your options like this: Click Apply and you’ll see the results display all Announcements from any site in the site collection. I have five team sites created each with a unique announcement added to them. Now comes the filtering. We don’t want to include every announcement, only ones users flag using that Featured column we added. At first blush you might scroll down to the Additional Filters part of the Query options and set the Featured column to be equal to Yes: This seems correct doesn’t it? After all, the column is a Yes/No column and looking at an announcement in the site, it displays the field as Yes or No: However after applying the filter you get this result: (I have the announcements from Team Site 1 and Team Site 4 flagged as Featured) Huh? It’s BACKWARDS! Let’s confirm that. Go back in and change the Additional Filters section from Yes to No and hit Apply and you get this: Wait a minute? Shouldn’t I see Team Site 1 and 4 if the logic is backwards? Why am I seeing the same thing as before. What gives… For whatever reason, unknown to me, a Yes/No field (even though it displays as such) really uses 1 and 0 behind the scenes. Yeah, someone was stuck on using integer values for booleans when they wrote SharePoint (probably after a long night of white boarding ways to mess with developers heads) and came up with this. The solution is pretty simple but not very discoverable. Set the filter to include your flagged items like so: And it will filter the items marked as Featured correctly giving you this result: This kind of solution could also be extended and enhanced. Here are a few suggestions and ideas: Modify the ItemStyle.xsl file to add a new style for this aggregation which would include the first few paragraphs of the body (or perhaps add another field to the Content type called Excerpt or Summary and display that instead) Add an Image column to the Announcement Content type to include a Picture field and display it in the summary Add a Category choice field (Employee News, Current Events, Headlines, etc.) and add multiple CQWPs to the home page filtering each one on a different category I know some may find this topic old and dusty but I didn’t see a lot out there specifically on filtering the Yes/No fields and the whole 1/0 trick was a little wonky, so I figured a few pictures would help walk through overcoming yet another SharePoint weirdness. With a little work and some creative juices you can easily us the power of aggregation and the CQWP to build a news site from content on your team sites.

A month after the installation and configuration was done and everything was working as it was supposed to, Microsoft released Team Foundation Server 2012 in mid August 2012. Well the company was using Borland Starteam as their source control and once starting to use TFS 2010, their developers and project managers were loving it since TFS is not just a source control tool and way much better then StarTeam. Anyways, long story short, they are now interested in thinking of upgrading to the newest version. Below are some basic Hardware and Software requirements for TFS 2012:Operating System:Windows Server 2008 with SP2 (only 64bit)Windows Server 2008 R2 with SP1 (only 64bit)Windows Server 2012 (only 64bit)SQL Server:SQL Server 2008 R2 and SQL Server 2012SQL Server 2008 is no longer supported.SQL Server Requirements for TFS.SharePoint Products:SharePoint Server 2010. We need to develop a completely new website for customers to choose a travel product with a contract. It needs to interface to our inventory to take the conference facility, hotel rooms etc. out of inventory once a contract has been signed (e-signature) and deposit paid. If you were starting from scratch, would you in-house or contract? If in-house, what development tools should I evaluate primarily - sharepoint, ASP.net? We are a small IT shop but we could hire 1-2 developers for this. We need to get something up in 12-18 months.

  • Usage of repository between EF model and code consumer

    - by jim
I have binary data in my database that I'll have to convert to bitmap at some point. I was thinking whether or not it's appropriate to use a repository and do it there. My consumer, which is a presentation layer, will use this repository. For example: // This is a class I created for modeling the item as is. public class RealItem { public string Name { get; set; } public Bitmap Image { get; set; } } public abstract class BaseRepository { //using Unity (http://unity.codeplex.com) to inject the dependancy of entity context. [Dependency] public Context { get; set; } } public calss ItemRepository : BaseRepository { public List<Items> Select() { IEnumerable<Items> items = from item in Context.Items select item; List<RealItem> lst = new List<RealItem>(); foreach(itm in items) { MemoryStream stream = new MemoryStream(itm.Image); Bitmap image = (Bitmap)Image.FromStream(stream); RealItem ritem = new RealItem{ Name=item.Name, Image=image }; lst.Add(ritem); } return lst; } } Is this a correct way to use the repository pattern? I'm learning this pattern and I've seen a lot of examples online that are using a repository but when I looked at their source code... for example: public IQueryable<object> Select { return from q in base.Context select q; } as you can see no behavior is added to the system by their approach, so I was confused that maybe repository is something else and I got it all wrong. At the end there should be extra benifits of using them right?

  • Bounding volume hierarchy - linked nodes (linear model)

    - by teodron
The scenario A chain of points: (Pi)i=0,N where Pi is linked to its direct neighbours (Pi-1 and Pi+1). The goal: perform efficient collision detection between any two, non-adjacent links: (PiPi+1) vs. (PjPj+1). The question: it's highly recommended in all works treating this subject of collision detection to use a broad phase and to implement it via a bounding volume hierarchy. For a chain made out of Pi nodes, it can look like this: I imagine the big blue sphere to contain all links, the green half of them, the reds a quarter and so on (the picture is not accurate, but it's there to help understand the question). What I do not understand is: How can such a hierarchy speed up computations between segments collision pairs if one has to update it for a deformable linear object such as a chain/wire/etc. each frame? More clearly, what is the actual principle of collision detection broad phases in this particular case/ how can it work when the actual computation of bounding spheres is in itself a time consuming task and has to be done (since the geometry changes) in each frame update? I think I am missing a key point - if we look at the picture where the chain is in a spiral pose, we see that most spheres are already contained within half of others or do intersect them.. it's odd if this is the way it should work.
