• Advice on approaching a significant rearrangement/refactoring?

  I'm working on an application (hobby project, solo programmer, small-medium size), and I have recently redesigned a significant part of it. The program already works in it's current state, but I decided to reimplement things to improve the OO design. I'm about to implement this new design by refactoring a big part of the application. Thing is I'm not sure where to start. Obviously, by the nature of a rearrangement, the moment you change one part of the program several other parts (at least temporarily) break. So it's a little 'scary' to rearrange something in a piece of software that already works. I'm asking for advice or some general guidelines: how should I approach a significant refactoring? When you approach rearranging large parts of your application, where do you start? Note that I'm interested only in re-arranging the high-level structure of the app. I have no intention of rewriting local algorithms.

  Just wanted to do a quick plug for my first production asp.net mvc app. It's not too complex at the moment, but its going to grow into something potentially large, so I am now working on a new version to handle multiple cities.   I have just started a C programming course and so far have only done the basics like printf, read a little on variables etc on the course book. The teacher has tasked us with writing a program that will take a value entered by the user, this will be the number of students in the class (25 at the moment but can be variable). It will then list the number of students randomly and place them in 3 columns. The purpose is to sort students into groups of 3 randomly, then display on the screen in columns. Now my question is not for the code that defeats the object of me attempting the exercise, but how to structure it. I can see that using an array can be used to display the list, but really after some pointers on how best to approach the problem in blocks, then I can attempt to program each block.

• poor font rendering in browsers on 12.04

  I'm using a Lenovo B570e. I've installed the mesa-utils for the graphic driver because it wasn't recognized by default. Now I have this: graphic card : Intel® Sandybridge Mobile x86/MMX/SSE2. I don't know if it's just my impression but I think all the images are a little bit pixelated and I think it have something to do with the drivers. Maybe is not the correct driver associated with it, I'm saying this because when I was on Windows 7 the name of the driver was something like " Intel hd graphics..." Any suggestions? Thank you! Later edit: This seems to happen only in browsers.

• Slow tranfer to external USB3 hard drive

  Trying to backup data from hard drive before reloading windows following some issue with its load. Having trouble with the file transfer to a USB3/2 external hard drive NTFS. Getting transfer speed of about 116.7kB/sec. In other words its taking about 5 hours to tranfer 1.4GB. I've got about 80GB to go. So the transfer is going to take 11days. Seems a little on the slow side. Am I missing something? Is there a way to make this faster. No issue with the external drive tranferring this amount in windows. But don't have that option at the moment.

  I want to host one way webcam Q&A's/AMA's and embed it on my sites webpage. I must be able to have specified hosts for these Q&A's connect quickly and easily to the webpage, and read user posted messages (questions) for interaction. I know there are some systems out there, like tinychat, but I'm unaware if there is anything exactly used for what I am looking for. Perhaps requiring a specific account/password before allowing streaming on the page, where I can email the host a password or directions to create an account to begin live streaming. Most of these people doing the question and answers on webcam will have little technical knowledge, so extra cookie points goes to ease of use! Thanks for ideas in advance!   I need to provide a quote to an external client for some software. I'm looking to use agile just for initial requirements building (which I'm experienced in from a developer perspective) but I need to do everything this is just a one man job. The client are having a hard time working out what there requirements are and the value I can add will be to sit down with them and work out what they want using user stories etc, I basically need to be a BA for a little bit. I am looking for good overview of the procedures to go through in the agile process for building requirements, and the continuing process a bit for further down the line. For example the initial inception through to elaboration of epics and building user stories (or not) just need to read a bit about it before the meeting so I know the best way to proceed if I spend a day with them. Having additional resources to provide to the client so that we are all on the same page would be useful too.

  So I feel kind of stupid having to ask this but tomorrow I have a phone interview with a good company. Phone interviews themselves not a big deal for me, but having to tell them my salary expectations is. The position that I'm applying for is a mid-level software engineer, I fit all of the requirements (I'm not overly qualified by any means), and I want to be sure I'm not asking for an amount that would be absurd or too little. Now, assuming I get a second interview and have to complete some sort of puzzle/code/work, they may pay me +/- whatever I asked for based upon their evaluation of my work. What I'd like to know, is what is a good amount to ask for? Or am I completely wrong with my assumptions? Either way some advice would be much appreciated!

  Endianess always comes up when migrating applications and databases from RISC to x86. The issue is often time overblown as if you are running on a relational database the database vendor will provide tools or automated methods to convert the data properly. Oracle RMAN is often the first choice. Oracle imp/exp, data pump, and GoldenGate can also be used. Migrating to Linux on Dell A bigger issue would be applications that access OS files. These OS files will need to be converted from big endian (RISC) to little endian (CISC) and then the application may be impacted because of the endianess differences.

  I'm a moderately experienced developer with experience developing using a variety of languages. I've done C++, Java, PHP, Javascript, and several other languages. I remember the Java dev stack being rather difficult to dive into, but it's nothing like the endless sea of the .NET framework. I'd like to become experienced in .NET development, as many dev shops are microsoft-centric. But I'm a little unsure as to where the best place to start is. As I already know a bunch of programming languages, I don't really need resources that will help me learn C# or any of the .NET languages as much as I need to learn the development stack, APIs, etc. Any suggestions on the best way to start learning .NET development?

• Showing range on hexagonal grid

  Here is the situation. I have hexagonal board,and a unit on it,with speed or move value 4.Diffrent terrain has a diffrent cost.When i click on the unit,game should show me a move range. My solution was to check each hex in range of 4,with A* pathfinding,and if path cost was less than 4 then this hex was in range.Finally game nicely show me range of that unit. My question is: Is there other solution to search for range on hex grids or square grid,because even if i am really proud of what i did in my solution,i think,it is a little to exaggerated?:)) What make me ask this question?I noticed that when unit speed is 4 or 6 or even 8,time to computing range for my computer was really good,but when speed was 10 and more i noticed that i needed to wait few second to compute.Well in real games i rather dont see something like this and my A* pathfinding is rather well optimized,so im thinking that my solution is wrong. Thanks for any replies.

• Port flash game to native android

  Alright here is the problem: the creators of a quite popular flash-based game have asked me to port their game to Android. They are not interested in any other platforms so we don't need to be worrying about iOS or PC. They want the best performance on just Android (I guess that's the point of porting a flash-based game. They could have just went with it) They found Unity 'slow'. How would the performance (on android) of other engines compare? Are they expecting too much i.e. finding Unity slow? I am in favor of Unity since development is a little easier with more things being visual (I am not experienced as you might have guessed). • Ubuntu 12.04 edit grub

  I just install Ubuntu 12.04. I want to change the boot order of grub. Previous versions of grub.cfg I was able to change the permissions and the do a gedit. After reloading 12.04, I was able to change permissions for grub.cfg, but gedit will not let me save it. I am a little irritated that Ubuntu is suppose to be open source. However someone has chosen to lock one out of a file. I do realize that some people have no business doing a edit on grub. I am a long time user of Unix and Linix.

  Alright so I installed Ubuntu last night and I am very new to everything. Right now I am trying to run a program called JES, (Jython Environment for Students). The instructions tell me to cd to the JES directory I have, so I type cd /home/Programs/JES It takes me to the directory I need to be in, so far so good. Then I have to type in: ./JES.sh And I get this returned to me: bash: ./JES.sh: Permission denied I have very little comprehension of what to do in Terminal or anything of the sort. Any help would be appreciated. I have tried using sudo -l to get permissions but it still persists.

• Touchpad stop working

  I'm in a HP 430 PC-Notebook using Oneiric. And sometimes my touchpad just stop working :(... I haven't installed anything, just safe playing with terminal following linuxcommand.org BTW my touchpad has a "hole" that in Windows, it works like this: two touch, block touchpad, two touch, unblock. And as far as I now, Ubuntu hasn't recognize this function so I think that the "hole" is not the problem... Also, I'm pretty sure that I haven't touch a little that... PD: Spanish speaker, sorry if "hole" is not the appropriate term haha.. Thanks!

• Matrix camera, movement concept

  I was talking to some guy. He said that my movement concept in game is bad. When left or right arrow is pressed I'm scrolling background what makes you feel that player is moving (player's X remains same). So... he told me something about matrix view. I should create all walls and platforms static and scroll only the camera and move player's rectangle. I did a little research in Google, but nothing found. Can you tell me anything about it? • How to turn off power management for external hard drive (Seagate GoFlex)?

  I bought this 2tb Segate GoFlex this last Black Friday and since then every 15 minutes or so the drive spins down, and then a little while later completely dismounts. Very annoying. From what I understand you could turn this off using the including Windows and Mac only software. This function and what controls it isn't proprietary, right? There has to be something that'll let me set it in Ubuntu... Anyone have any suggestions? Also, I formatted it to EXT4. Hope I didn't screw myself up. :/

• Collision for mobile game

  I'm writing a little game in as3 using Starling, and I need to check collision between 2 boats that can rotate. I don't need the pixel perfect collision, but bounds collision is not enough too. The boat look more or less like this: I was thinking about create one square on the back of the boat and a triangle on the front, than for each boat, check if the square collide with the other boat square or triangle, and the same for the triangle. I just don't know how to do that, I don't know if it's possible with the Shape.hitTest, or if it's the best way to do that. What can I do?
