  • Function parameters evaluation order: is undefined behaviour if we pass reference?

    - by bolov
    This is undefined behaviour: void feedMeValue(int x, int a) { cout << x << " " << a << endl; } int main() { int a = 2; int &ra = a; feedMeValue(ra = 3, a); return 0; } because depending on what parameter gets evaluated first we could call (3, 2) or (3, 3). However this: void feedMeReference(int x, int const &ref) { cout << x << " " << ref << endl; } int main() { int a = 2; int &ra = a; feedMeReference(ra = 3, a); return 0; } will always output 3 3 since the second parameter is a reference and all parameters have been evaluated before the function call, so even if the second parameter is evaluated before of after ra = 3, the function received a reference to a wich will have a value of 2 or 3 at the time of the evaluation, but will always have the value 3 at the time of the function call. Is the second example UB? It is important to know because the compiler is free to do anything if he detects undefined behaviour, even if I know it would always yield the same results. *Note: I think that feedMeReference(a = 3, a) is the exact same situation as feedMeReference(ra = 3, a). However it seems not everybody agrees, in the addition to having 2 completely different answers.

  • Function should return float, but it gets messed up!

    - by Andre
    Hi guys, I'm going crazy here. I have a function that should return a float number: - (float) getHue:(UIColor *)original { NSLog(@"getHue"); const CGFloat *componentColors = CGColorGetComponents(original.CGColor); float red = componentColors[0]; float green = componentColors[1]; float blue = componentColors[2]; float h = 0.0f; float maxChannel = fmax(red, fmax(green, blue)); float minChannel = fmin(red, fmin(green, blue)); if (maxChannel == minChannel) h = 0.0f; else if (maxChannel == red) h = 0.166667f * (green - blue) / (maxChannel - minChannel) + 0.000000f; else if (maxChannel == green) h = 0.166667f * (blue - red) / (maxChannel - minChannel) + 0.333333f; else if (maxChannel == blue) h = 0.166667f * (red - green) / (maxChannel - minChannel) + 0.666667f; else h = 0.0f; if (h < 0.0f) h += 1.0f; NSLog(@"getHue results: %f", h); return h; } The NSLog will trace it correctly (i.e: 0.005), but the actual return value of the function is NULL. I've tried getting that value in so many ways and it never works. float originalHue = [self getHue:original]; results in a building error, as it says: "incompatible types in initialization" float *originalHue = [self getHue:original]; results in a null return. I've tried other ways, but it never actually gets the value properly. Any thoughts? Cheers guys, Andre

  • Pros and Cons of using SqlCommand Prepare in C#?

    - by MadBoy
    When i was reading books to learn C# (might be some old Visual Studio 2005 books) I've encountered advice to always use SqlCommand.Prepare everytime I execute SQL call (whether its' a SELECT/UPDATE or INSERT on SQL SERVER 2005/2008) and I pass parameters to it. But is it really so? Should it be done every time? Or just sometimes? Does it matter whether it's one parameter being passed or five or twenty? What boost should it give if any? Would it be noticeable at all (I've been using SqlCommand.Prepare here and skipped it there and never had any problems or noticeable differences). For the sake of the question this is my usual code that I use, but this is more of a general question. public static decimal pobierzBenchmarkKolejny(string varPortfelID, DateTime data, decimal varBenchmarkPoprzedni, decimal varStopaOdniesienia) { const string preparedCommand = @"SELECT [dbo].[ufn_BenchmarkKolejny](@varPortfelID, @data, @varBenchmarkPoprzedni, @varStopaOdniesienia) AS 'Benchmark'"; using (var varConnection = Locale.sqlConnectOneTime(Locale.sqlDataConnectionDetailsDZP)) //if (varConnection != null) { using (var sqlQuery = new SqlCommand(preparedCommand, varConnection)) { sqlQuery.Prepare(); sqlQuery.Parameters.AddWithValue("@varPortfelID", varPortfelID); sqlQuery.Parameters.AddWithValue("@varStopaOdniesienia", varStopaOdniesienia); sqlQuery.Parameters.AddWithValue("@data", data); sqlQuery.Parameters.AddWithValue("@varBenchmarkPoprzedni", varBenchmarkPoprzedni); using (var sqlQueryResult = sqlQuery.ExecuteReader()) if (sqlQueryResult != null) { while (sqlQueryResult.Read()) { //sqlQueryResult["Benchmark"]; } } } }

  • C++ destructors causing crash's

    - by larsonator
    ok, so i got a some what intricate program that simulates the uni systems of students, units, and students enrolling in units. Students are stored in a binary search tree, Units are stored in a standard list. Student has a list of Unit Pointers, to store which units he/she is enrolled in Unit has a list of Student pointers, to store students which are enrolled in that unit. The unit collections (storing units in a list) as made as a static variable where the main function is, as is the Binary search tree of students. when its finaly time to close the program, i call the destructors of each. but at some stage, during the destructors on the unit side, Unhandled exception at 0x002e4200 in ClassAllocation.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0x00000000. UnitCollection destructor: UnitCol::~UnitCol() { list<Unit>::iterator itr; for(itr = UnitCollection.begin(); itr != UnitCollection.end();) { UnitCollection.pop_front(); itr = UnitCollection.begin(); } } Unit Destructor Unit::~Unit() { } now i got the same sorta problem on the student side of things BST destructors void StudentCol::Destructor(const BTreeNode * r) { if(r!= 0) { Destructor(r->getLChild()); Destructor(r->getRChild()); delete r; } } StudentCol::~StudentCol() { Destructor(root); } Student Destructor Student::~Student() { } so yeah any help would be greatly appreciated

  • Boost ASIO async_write "Vector iterator not dereferencable"

    - by xeross
    Hey, I've been working on an async boost server program, and so far I've got it to connect. However I'm now getting a "Vector iterator not dereferencable" error. I suspect the vector gets destroyed or dereferenced before he packet gets sent thus causing the error. void start() { Packet packet; packet.setOpcode(SMSG_PING); send(packet); } void send(Packet packet) { cout << "DEBUG> Transferring packet with opcode " << packet.GetOpcode() << endl; async_write(m_socket, buffer(packet.write()), boost::bind(&Session::writeHandler, shared_from_this(), placeholders::error, placeholders::bytes_transferred)); } void writeHandler(const boost::system::error_code& errorCode, size_t bytesTransferred) { cout << "DEBUG> Transfered " << bytesTransferred << " bytes to " << m_socket.remote_endpoint().address().to_string() << endl; } Start gets called once a connection is made. packet.write() returns a uint8_t vector Would it matter if I'd change void send(Packet packet) to void send(Packet& packet) Not in relation to this problem but performance wise.

  • Parse string to create a list of element

    - by Nick
    I have a string like this: "\r color=\"red\" name=\"Jon\" \t\n depth=\"8.26\" " And I want to parse this string and create a std::list of this object: class data { std::string name; std::string value; }; Where for example: name = color value = red What is the fastest way? I can use boost. EDIT: This is what i've tried: vector<string> tokens; split(tokens, str, is_any_of(" \t\f\v\n\r")); if(tokens.size() > 1) { list<data> attr; for_each(tokens.begin(), tokens.end(), [&attr](const string& token) { if(token.empty() || !contains(token, "=")) return; vector<string> tokens; split(tokens, token, is_any_of("=")); erase_all(tokens[1], "\""); attr.push_back(data(tokens[0], tokens[1])); } ); } But it does not work if there are spaces inside " ": like color="red 1".

  • Inheritance inside a template - public members become invisible?

    - by Juliano
    I'm trying to use inheritance among classes defined inside a class template (inner classes). However, the compiler (GCC) is refusing to give me access to public members in the base class. Example code: template <int D> struct Space { struct Plane { Plane(Space& b); virtual int& at(int y, int z) = 0; Space& space; /* <= this member is public */ }; struct PlaneX: public Plane { /* using Plane::space; */ PlaneX(Space& b, int x); int& at(int y, int z); const int cx; }; int& at(int x, int y, int z); }; template <int D> int& Space<D>::PlaneX::at(int y, int z) { return space.at(cx, y, z); /* <= but it fails here */ }; Space<4> sp4; The compiler says: file.cpp: In member function ‘int& Space::PlaneX::at(int, int)’: file.cpp:21: error: ‘space’ was not declared in this scope If using Plane::space; is added to the definition of class PlaneX, or if the base class member is accessed through the this pointer, or if class Space is changed to a non-template class, then the compiler is fine with it. I don't know if this is either some obscure restriction of C++, or a bug in GCC (GCC versions 4.4.1 and 4.4.3 tested). Does anyone have an idea?

  • Fails proceeding after POSTing to web server

    - by OverTheRainbow
    Hello According to this question, it seems like the error "Too many automatic redirections were attempted" is caused when forgetting to use a cookiecontainer to connect to a web server that uses cookies to keep track of the user. However, even though I used "request.CookieContainer = MyCookieContainer", I'm still getting into an endless loop that is terminated by VB Express with this error message. Imports System.IO Imports System.Net 'Remember to add reference to System.Web DLL Imports System.Web Imports System.Text Public Class Form1 Const ConnectURL = "http://www.acme.com/logon.php" Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click Dim request As HttpWebRequest = WebRequest.Create(ConnectURL) 'Build POST data request.Method = "POST" request.ContentType = "application/x-www-form-urlencoded" Dim Data As New StringBuilder Data.Append("Account=" + HttpUtility.UrlEncode("jdoe")) Data.Append("&Password=" + HttpUtility.UrlEncode("test")) Dim byteData() As Byte byteData = UTF8Encoding.UTF8.GetBytes(Data.ToString()) request.ContentLength = byteData.Length Dim postStream As Stream = Nothing Try postStream = request.GetRequestStream() postStream.Write(byteData, 0, byteData.Length) Finally If Not postStream Is Nothing Then postStream.Close() End Try 'Dim MyCookieContainer As New CookieContainer Dim MyCookieContainer As CookieContainer = New CookieContainer() request.CookieContainer = MyCookieContainer 'Makes no difference 'request.KeepAlive = True 'request.AllowAutoRedirect = True Dim response As HttpWebResponse 'HERE '"Too many automatic redirections were attempted" response = request.GetResponse() Dim reader As StreamReader = New StreamReader(response.GetResponseStream()) RichTextBox1.Text = reader.ReadToEnd End Sub End Class This is probably a newbie issue, but I don't know what else to try. Any idea? Thank you for any hint.

  • std::string.resize() and std::string.length()

    - by dreamlax
    I'm relatively new to C++ and I'm still getting to grips with the C++ Standard Library. To help transition from C, I want to format a std::string using printf-style formatters. I realise stringstream is a more type-safe approach, but I find myself finding printf-style much easier to read and deal with (at least, for the time being). This is my function: using namespace std; string formatStdString(const string &format, ...) { va_list va; string output; size_t needed; size_t used; va_start(va, format); needed = vsnprintf(&output[0], 0, format.c_str(), va); output.resize(needed + 1); // for null terminator?? used = vsnprintf(&output[0], output.capacity(), format.c_str(), va); // assert(used == needed); va_end(va); return output; } This works, kinda. A few things that I am not sure about are: Do I need to make room for a null terminator, or is this unnecessary? Is capacity() the right function to call here? I keep thinking length() would return 0 since the first character in the string is a '\0'. Occasionally while writing this string's contents to a socket (using its c_str() and length()), I have null bytes popping up on the receiving end, which is causing a bit of grief, but they seem to appear inconsistently. If I don't use this function at all, no null bytes appear.

  • MySQL query does not return any data

    - by Alex L
    Hi, I need to retrieve data from a specific time period. The query works fine until I specify the time period. Is there something wrong with the way I specify time period? I know there are many entries within that time-frame. This query returns empty: SELECT stop_times.stop_id, STR_TO_DATE(stop_times.arrival_time, '%H:%i:%s') as stopTime, routes.route_short_name, routes.route_long_name, trips.trip_headsign FROM trips JOIN stop_times ON trips.trip_id = stop_times.trip_id JOIN routes ON routes.route_id = trips.route_id WHERE stop_times.stop_id = 5508 HAVING stopTime BETWEEN DATE_SUB(stopTime,INTERVAL 1 MINUTE) AND DATE_ADD(stopTime,INTERVAL 20 MINUTE); Here is it's EXPLAIN: +----+-------------+------------+--------+------------------+---------+---------+-------------------------------+------+-------------+ | id | select_type | table | type | possible_keys | key | key_len | ref | rows | Extra | +----+-------------+------------+--------+------------------+---------+---------+-------------------------------+------+-------------+ | 1 | SIMPLE | stop_times | ref | trip_id,stop_id | stop_id | 5 | const | 605 | Using where | | 1 | SIMPLE | trips | eq_ref | PRIMARY,route_id | PRIMARY | 4 | wmata_gtfs.stop_times.trip_id | 1 | | | 1 | SIMPLE | routes | eq_ref | PRIMARY | PRIMARY | 4 | wmata_gtfs.trips.route_id | 1 | | +----+-------------+------------+--------+------------------+---------+---------+-------------------------------+------+-------------+ 3 rows in set (0.00 sec) The query works if I remove the HAVING clause (don't specify time range).   • WYSIWYG with Qt - font size woes

    - by Rob
    I am creating a custom Qt widget that mimics an A4 printed page and am having problems getting fonts to render at the correct size. My widget uses QPainter::setViewport and QPainter::setWindow to mimic the A4 page, using units of 10ths of a millimetre which enables me to draw easily. However, attempting to create a font at a specific point size doesn't seem to work and using QFont:setPixelSize isn't accurate. Here is some code: View::View(QWidget *parent) : QWidget(parent), printer(new QPrinter) { printer->setPaperSize(QPrinter::A4); printer->setFullPage(true); } void View::paintEvent(QPaintEvent*) { QPainter painter(this); painter.setWindow(0, 0, 2100, 2970); painter.setViewport(0, 0, printer->width(), printer->height()); // Draw a rect at x = 1cm, y = 1cm, 6cm wide and 1 inch high painter.drawRect(100, 100, 600, 254); // Create a 72pt (1 inch) high font QFont font("Arial"); font.setPixelSize(254); painter.setFont(font); // Draw in the same box // The font is too large painter.drawText(QRect(100, 100, 600, 254), tr("Wg\u0102")); // Ack - the actual font size reported by the metrics is 283 pixels! const QFontMetrics fontMetrics = painter.fontMetrics(); qDebug() << "Font height = " << fontMetrics.height(); } So I'm asking for a 254 high font (1 inch, 72 pts) and it's too big and sure enough when I query for the font height via QFontMetrics it is 283 high. Does anyone else know how to use font sizes in points when using custom mapping modes like this? It must be possible. Note that I cannot see how to convert between logical/device points either (i.e. the Win32 DPtoLP/LPtoDP equivalents.)

  • Attempted to render a circle in opengl es 1.1, renders as oval

    - by eipxen
    Hi all, I attempted to render a circle in opengl es 1.1 as a test before building a larger program, but it renders as an oval. Here is the code I use to generate and render my vertices: static const int numVerts = 40; static GLfloat myFirstCircle[82]; myFirstCircle[0] = 0.0f; myFirstCircle[1] = 0.0f; for (int i = 2; i < (numVerts+1)*2; i+=2) { myFirstCircle[i] = .5 * cosf(i*2*3.14159/numVerts); myFirstCircle[i+1] = .5 * sinf(i*2*3.14159/numVerts); } glVertexPointer(2, GL_FLOAT, 0, myFirstCircle); glEnableClientState(GL_VERTEX_ARRAY); glDrawArrays(GL_TRIANGLE_FAN, 0, 22); I'm still somewhat new to this system, so I may have a silly error that I do not see, but it seems to me like this should generate 40 vertices on a circle of radius .5. When it renders, the shape on screen appears to be an oval, significantly taller than it is wide. My question is thus: why is my circle rendering this way, and what could I do to fix it? This is the first question on stackoverflow, so I'm not sure how to share an image of my output.

  • Multiple dispatching issue

    - by user1440263
    I try to be synthetic: I'm dispatching an event from a MovieClip (customized symbol in library) this way: public function _onMouseDown(e:MouseEvent){ var obj = {targetClips:["tondo"],functionString:"testFF"}; dispatchEvent(new BridgeEvent(BridgeEvent.BRIDGE_DATA,obj)); } The BridgeEvent class is the following: package events { import flash.events.EventDispatcher; import flash.events.Event; public class BridgeEvent extends Event { public static const BRIDGE_DATA:String = "BridgeData"; public var data:*; public function BridgeEvent(type:String, data:*) { this.data = data; super(type, true); } } } The document class listens to the event this way: addEventListener(BridgeEvent.BRIDGE_DATA,eventSwitcher); In eventSwitcher method I have a simple trace("received"). What happens: when I click the MovieClip the trace action gets duplicated and the output window writes many "received" (even if the click is only one). What happens? How do I prevent this behaviour? What is causing this? Any help is appreciated. [SOLVED] I'm sorry, you will not believe this. A colleague, to make me a joke, converted the MOUSE_DOWN handler to MOUSE_OVER.

  • Is there a faster way to parse through a large file with regex quickly?

    - by Ray Eatmon
    Problem: Very very, large file I need to parse line by line to get 3 values from each line. Everything works but it takes a long time to parse through the whole file. Is it possible to do this within seconds? Typical time its taking is between 1 minute and 2 minutes. Example file size is 148,208KB I am using regex to parse through every line: Here is my c# code: private static void ReadTheLines(int max, Responder rp, string inputFile) { List<int> rate = new List<int>(); double counter = 1; try { using (var sr = new StreamReader(inputFile, Encoding.UTF8, true, 1024)) { string line; Console.WriteLine("Reading...."); while ((line = sr.ReadLine()) != null) { if (counter <= max) { counter++; rate = rp.GetRateLine(line); } else if(max == 0) { counter++; rate = rp.GetRateLine(line); } } rp.GetRate(rate); Console.ReadLine(); } } catch (Exception e) { Console.WriteLine("The file could not be read:"); Console.WriteLine(e.Message); } } Here is my regex: public List<int> GetRateLine(string justALine) { const string reg = @"^\d{1,}.+\[(.*)\s[\-]\d{1,}].+GET.*HTTP.*\d{3}[\s](\d{1,})[\s](\d{1,})$"; Match match = Regex.Match(justALine, reg, RegexOptions.IgnoreCase); // Here we check the Match instance. if (match.Success) { // Finally, we get the Group value and display it. string theRate = match.Groups[3].Value; Ratestorage.Add(Convert.ToInt32(theRate)); } else { Ratestorage.Add(0); } return Ratestorage; } Here is an example line to parse, usually around 200,000 lines: 10.10.10.10 - - [27/Nov/2002:16:46:20 -0500] "GET /solr/ HTTP/1.1" 200 4926 789

  • MVC3 custom validation attribute for an "at least one is required" situation

    - by Pricey
    Hi I have found this answer already: MVC3 Validation - Require One From Group Which is fairly specific to the checking of group names and uses reflection. My example is probably a bit simpler and I was just wondering if there was a simpler way to do it. I have the below: public class TimeInMinutesViewModel { private const short MINUTES_OR_SECONDS_MULTIPLIER = 60; //public string Label { get; set; } [Range(0,24, ErrorMessage = "Hours should be from 0 to 24")] public short Hours { get; set; } [Range(0,59, ErrorMessage = "Minutes should be from 0 to 59")] public short Minutes { get; set; } /// <summary> /// /// </summary> /// <returns></returns> public short TimeInMinutes() { // total minutes should not be negative if (Hours <= 0 && Minutes <= 0) { return 0; } // multiplier operater treats the right hand side as an int not a short int // so I am casting the result to a short even though both properties are already short int return (short)((Hours * MINUTES_OR_SECONDS_MULTIPLIER) + (Minutes * MINUTES_OR_SECONDS_MULTIPLIER)); } } I want to add a validation attribute either to the Hours & Minutes properties or the class itself.. and the idea is to just make sure at least 1 of these properties (Hours OR minutes) has a value, server and client side validation using a custom validation attribute. Does anyone have an example of this please? Thanks

    How can I make the code when run the code it go to samsung.com private void webBrowser1_Navigated(object sender, WebBrowserNavigatedEventArgs e) { webBrowser1.Navigate("www.samsung.com"); } Please correct it when run program it go to samsung.com using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.ComponentModel; using System.Data; using System.Drawing; using System.Linq; using System.Text; using System.Windows.Forms; using mshtml; namespace webhiglight { public partial class Form1 : Form { public Form1() { InitializeComponent(); } private void webBrowser1_Navigated(object sender, WebBrowserNavigatedEventArgs e) { webBrowser1.Navigate("www.samsung.com"); } private void webBrowser1_DocumentCompleted(object sender, WebBrowserDocumentCompletedEventArgs e) { if (webBrowser1.Document != null) { IHTMLDocument2 document = webBrowser1.Document.DomDocument as IHTMLDocument2; if (document != null) { IHTMLSelectionObject currentSelection = document.selection; IHTMLTxtRange range = currentSelection.createRange() as IHTMLTxtRange; if (range != null) { const String search = "ant"; if (range.findText(search, search.Length, 2)) { range.select(); } } } } } } }

  • where did the _syscallN macros go in <linux/unistd.h>?

    - by Evan Teran
    It used to be the case that if you needed to make a system call directly in linux without the use of an existing library, you could just include <linux/unistd.h> and it would define a macro similar to this: #define _syscall3(type,name,type1,arg1,type2,arg2,type3,arg3) \ type name(type1 arg1,type2 arg2,type3 arg3) \ { \ long __res; \ __asm__ volatile ("int $0x80" \ : "=a" (__res) \ : "0" (__NR_##name),"b" ((long)(arg1)),"c" ((long)(arg2)), \ "d" ((long)(arg3))); \ if (__res>=0) \ return (type) __res; \ errno=-__res; \ return -1; \ } Then you could just put somewhere in your code: _syscall3(ssize_t, write, int, fd, const void *, buf, size_t, count); which would define a write function for you that properly performed the system call. It seems that this system has been superseded by something (i am guessing that "[vsyscall]" page that every process gets) more robust. So what is the proper way (please be specific) for a program to perform a system call directly on newer linux kernels? I realize that I should be using libc and let it do the work for me. But let's assume that I have a decent reason for wanting to know how to do this :-).

  • Visual C++ doesn't operator<< overload

    - by PierreBdR
    I have a vector class that I want to be able to input/output from a QTextStream object. The forward declaration of my vector class is: namespace util { template <size_t dim, typename T> class Vector; } I define the operator<< as: namespace util { template <size_t dim, typename T> QTextStream& operator<<(QTextStream& out, const util::Vector<dim,T>& vec) { ... } template <size_t dim, typename T> QTextStream& operator>>(QTextStream& in,util::Vector<dim,T>& vec) { .. } } However, if I ty to use these operators, Visual C++ returns this error: error C2678: binary '<<' : no operator found which takes a left-hand operand of type 'QTextStream' (or there is no acceptable conversion) A few things I tried: Originaly, the methods were defined as friends of the template, and it is working fine this way with g++. The methods have been moved outside the namespace util I changed the definition of the templates to fit what I found on various Visual C++ websites. The original friend declaration is: friend QTextStream& operator>>(QTextStream& ss, Vector& in) { ... } The "Visual C++ adapted" version is: friend QTextStream& operator>> <dim,T>(QTextStream& ss, Vector<dim,T>& in); with the function pre-declared before the class and implemented after. I checked the file is correctly included using: #pragma message ("Including vector header") And everything seems fine. Doesn anyone has any idea what might be wrong?

  • Boost ASIO Headache

    - by bobber205
    Man... thought using ASIO in Boost was going to be easy and intuitive. :P I am starting to get it finally but I am having some trouble. Here's a snippet. I am having several compiler errors on the async_accept line. What am I doing wrong? :P I've based my code off of this page: http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_43_0/doc/html/boost_asio/tutorial/tutdaytime3/src.html bool TestSocket::StartListening(int port) { bool didStart = false; if (!this->listening) { //try to listen acceptor = new tcp::acceptor(this->myService, tcp::endpoint(tcp::v4(), port)); didStart = true; //probably change? tcp::socket* tempNewSocket = new tcp::socket(this->myService); acceptor->async_accept(tempNewSocket, boost::bind(&AlexSocket::NewConnection, this, tempNewSocket, boost::asio::placeholders::error) ); } else //already started! return false; this->listening = didStart; return didStart; } void TestSocket::NewConnection(tcp::socket* s, const boost::system::error_code& error) { }

  • Warning: cast increases required alignment

    - by dash-tom-bang
    I'm recently working on this platform for which a legacy codebase issues a large number of "cast increases required alignment to N" warnings, where N is the size of the target of the cast. struct Message { int32_t id; int32_t type; int8_t data[16]; }; int32_t GetMessageInt(const Message& m) { return *reinterpret_cast<int32_t*>(&data[0]); } Hopefully it's obvious that a "real" implementation would be a bit more complex, but the basic point is that I've got data coming from somewhere, I know that it's aligned (because I need the id and type to be aligned), and yet I get the message that the cast is increasing the alignment, in the example case, to 4. Now I know that I can suppress the warning with an argument to the compiler, and I know that I can cast the bit inside the parentheses to void* first, but I don't really want to go through every bit of code that needs this sort of manipulation (there's a lot because we load a lot of data off of disk, and that data comes in as char buffers so that we can easily pointer-advance), but can anyone give me any other thoughts on this problem? I mean, to me it seems like such an important and common option that you wouldn't want to warn, and if there is actually the possibility of doing it wrong then suppressing the warning isn't going to help. Finally, can't the compiler know as I do how the object in question is actually aligned in the structure, so it should be able to not worry about the alignment on that particular object unless it got bumped a byte or two?

  • Why does this program take up so much memory?

    - by Adrian
    I am learning Objective-C. I am trying to release all of the memory that I use. So, I wrote a program to test if I am doing it right: #import <Foundation/Foundation.h> #define DEFAULT_NAME @"Unknown" @interface Person : NSObject { NSString *name; } @property (copy) NSString * name; @end @implementation Person @synthesize name; - (void) dealloc { [name release]; [super dealloc]; } - (id) init { if (self = [super init]) { name = DEFAULT_NAME; } return self; } @end int main (int argc, const char * argv[]) { NSAutoreleasePool * pool = [[NSAutoreleasePool alloc] init]; Person *person = [[Person alloc] init]; NSString *str; int i; for (i = 0; i < 1e9; i++) { str = [NSString stringWithCString: "Name" encoding: NSUTF8StringEncoding]; person.name = str; [str release]; } [person release]; [pool drain]; return 0; } I am using a mac with snow leopard. To test how much memory this is using, I open Activity Monitor at the same time that it is running. After a couple of seconds, it is using gigabytes of memory. What can I do to make it not use so much?
