  I am a mid level IT lead at a IT support company with 8 years of experience. I don't get a lot of opportunities to learn at my organization since we primarily support existing systems and just fix issues arising on a day to day basis, We are not expected by the parent company to develop solutions from scratch. I aspire to become an Architect. Please guide me how should I plan to acquire the required skills and Knowledge esp since my company doesn't provide me with the right opportunities. The city where i am in doesn't have a lot of s/w development companies they are mostly services companies. Thanks a lot for your replies. Please give me some directions on how do I plan the self learning process ? Personal commitment won't let me move out of my current capacity to join a entry level job outside as of now . Atleast I should be well prepared to grab the opportunity when the time comes.

  Hello, I am developing on to a Groupon clone app called Couponic on behalf of a client. Can anyone help in pinpointing how Couponic generates user passwords? I want to be able to generate new passwords in the same method Couponic uses in a separate PHP script if possible, so that users of an existing site will also be able to log in to the Couponic site without re-creating an account. Couponic is built using the YII PHP framework, I can't find anything in the YII documentation. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Can a domain specific language be used to representing the Open SRD

  I am in the early stages of creating an open source C# library that would allow developers to drop in the open SRD (http://www.d20srd.org/) into an existing project. Abstracted it is a complex set of tightly coupled business rules. Having previously worked on an adaptive object model project for health care risk management I began with that pattern in mind. Due to the high coupling of rules it is becoming apparent that the project may require some kind of scripting. Have started researching DSL implementation I am now considering scraping the adaptive object model for a domain specific language. I have not work with domain specific languages so my question is it reasonable to assume a domain specific language can be used to representing the open SRD?

• What do you use to create sprite graphics? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: What tools do you use for 2D art/sprite creation? What do you folks suggest for creating sprite graphics and sprite sheets? I fiddle with pixelformer and tilestudio. Pixelfromer has a kicken interface, it is quick and easy to make graphics, but a bit cumbersom if you want to make a spritemap. Tile Studio is a interesting mix or tiles and maps, but it is a bit buggy and basic. The Adobe series, just don't really seem to handle tiny graphics well. (there is a previous posting of this question existing, but it is a year old and I was hoping for further/updated input from the community)

• Help with a CMS for content only not display

  Hello I'm trying to make some kind of tool for an school website, what I need to do is to make students take a test and according to what are the results (27 posibilities) they get a set of activities (questions) according to their level which they can solve in around 3 months logging periodically to the website, plus I need teachers to log and look at the reports. Now, I'm a graphic designer myself so my skills are mostly html5 and css3 and I know some php (edit existing ones only) and javascript (jquery) as well, most people tell me that I need a CMS to do the tool but all I find is CMS for display like blogs or news websites which I think aren't useful for me because the website is already made in html and css3 only (I need to add an extra page for the tool) I understand I need to create users and give them special rights according to what type of user they are and I also understand that I need a database where I can store all my questions. What is the best way to do this? what do you suggest me? Thanks

• How do developers find the time to stay on top of latest technologies?

  I was a freelance web developer until circa 2004 when I started going down the management route but have decided to try to get back into development again (specifically JavaScript and HTML5 web/mobile web apps) and I really get the impression to be truly good at these and similar fast moving technologies a constant amount of time is required to be set aside to invest in getting better at existing skills in addition to learning new skills. I understand right now since I am getting back into things there is a pretty steep learning curve, but seeing how good many guys are out there - the only way I see of getting up there is putting in a serious amount of time. For those working as fulltime developers, what I am trying to understand is this - on most days, how much time in the office is spent actually grinding out code compared to learning/research. I could easily spend 2-4 hours daily getting on top of the best ways to go about doing things. Do most good developers who are employed full time invest significant hours outside of work sharpening their skills? Or maybe I'm looking at all of this completely wrong?

  I have been looking around a little bit, but most of the discussions are about problems with already existing systems (particular graphics card and setup etc.). I would like to ask what would be the best option for me if I want to build powerful desktop with triple monitor setup. I have one Dell UltraSharp U2713HM (27 inches, 2560x1440) and I was thinking about getting two more. Would it be possible to have those three working with ubuntu (kubuntu) on any graphics card out there today? What is the best option if it comes to choosing particular model? Should I use proprietary drivers or some open sourced ones? I am not a gamer. I mostly develop on my machines and running some computational tasks, but I would rather like to spend some more money and have setup where I don't see any lags :) thank You very much in advance! For example Purpose of Website: (sell products, reduce number of enquires, reduce work load, etc) Do you have you’re an existing logo? (can you send it via email) Do you have a preferred font for the website text? All the presentation logic is done through getting json objects and modifying the view through javascript. • Why are new pages not being indexed and old pages stay in the index?

  I currently have a site that was recently restructured, causing much of its content to be reposted, creating new URL's for each page. To avoid duplicates, all of the existing pages were added to the robots file. That said, it has now been over a week - I know Google has recrawled the site - and when I search for term X, it is stil the old page that is ranking, with the new one nowhere to be seen. I'm assuming it's a cached version, but why are so many of the old pages still appearing in the index? Furthermore, all "tags" pages (it's a Q&A site, like this one) were also added to the robots a few months ago, yet I think they are all still appearing in the index. Anyone got any ideas about why this is happening, and how I can get my new pages indexed?

• How do I forward/redirect a website from a folder in a subdomain to another server?

  I have a client with a site at: subdomain.theirdomain.com/folder It's a 50Gb gallery site that i've now cloned and have locally in MAMP. Once i've made some changes to it I need to host it at alternative physical server/hosting (I intend using a dedicated server I have access to with a technical domain name currently). However, the client would ideally like to keep the existing URL as it has been used extensively in marketing. I've done HTTP redirects and forwards and 301 redirects in the past, but I'm not sure how or even if I can do what the client wants. How can I achieve this, possibly using .htaccess and DNS entries? Caveats: I can't have the site at a 3rd party domain and the client isn't able/allowed to register any additional domains:

  The version of python which I am using is 2.6, and there is a 2.7 and 3.x. Usually I use python for some trivial program/snippet. I realize there are some major difference between 2.x and 3.x. This software was developed in a totally ad hoc manner, which means that any documentation generated is outdated, confused and just plain useless. I do not want to retroactivelly produce all the missing artifacts, since this would just be a waste of time. The code base is ugly, and really need some serious refactoring, but this is another story. What I want is to apply Readme Driven Development to guide this project. So, basically, I want to write a Readme, which will document every change meaningful at the user level. The problem is, I have no idea about how to structure this document. For me, it's pretty clear that it should have a different layout than the traditional Readme. I really want to document changes, and not the current state of affairs. Any ideas?

• Ubuntu Doesn't Start from USB After Installation

  My computer refuses to boot from the USB even after I change everything that I can possibly think of on my motherboard's BIOS. But I have booted from the USB twice in the past. The first time is when I first got the computer and needed to install a new operating system. The second time is when I installed Windows onto the whole hard drive and needed to reinstall Ubuntu. It seems that it only refuses to boot if there is already an existing installation of Ubuntu on the hard drive. Any ideas on what is going on?

The client has a problem with high maintenance costs from fixing bugs in their existing applications. Their applications have a life span from between 5-15 years in which they continuously add new features. I'm quite confident that they will benefit greatly from starting with unit tests.   I'm re-working on the design of an existing application which is build using WebForms. Currently the plan is to work it into a MVP pattern application while using Ninject as the IoC container. The reason for Ninject to be there is that the boss had wanted a certain flexibility within the system so that we can build in different flavor of business logic in the model and let the programmer to choose which to use based on the client request, either via XML configuration or database setting. I know that Ninject have no need for XML configuration, however I'm confused on how it can help to dynamically inject the dependency into the system? Imagine I have a interface IMember and I need to bind this interface to the class decided by a xml or database configuration at the launch of the application, how can I achieve that?

• Should I try to write simple key-value storage by myself?

  I need a key-value storage in a simplest form we can think of. Keys should be some fixed-length strings, values should be some texts. This key-value storage should have an HTTP-backed API. That's basically it. As you can see, there is no big difference between such storage and some web application with some upload functionality. The thing is - it'll take few hours (including tests and coffee drinking) to write something like this. "Something like this" will be fully under my control and can be tuned on demand. Should I, in this specific case, not try to reinvent bicycles? Is it better to use some of existing NoSQL solutions. If yes, which one exactly? If, say, I'd needed something SQL-like, I won't ask and won't try to write something by myself. But with NoSQL I just don't know what is adequate and what is not.

  I have a Request class based on the same Entity in my Domain. It currently only has property definitions. I'd like to add a method for checking a duplicate Request which I'll call from my controller. Should I add a method called CheckDuplicate in the Request class? Would I be violating the SRP? The method will need to access a database context to check already existing requests. I'm thinking creating another class altogether for this logic that accepts a datacontext as part of its constructor. But creating a whole new class for just one method seems like a waste too. Any advice?

  I have a problem with mapping pure domain group to one existing on UNIX system. When I map NT domain account by default samba picks local SID - one that can be acquired via the command; net getlocalsid Instead of SID that comes from domain; net getdomainsid This is the behavior that I do not understand. I can explicitly set the SID to the domain one. E.g.: net groupmap add sid=[DOMAIN SID]-[RID] ntgroup=[DOMAIN group] unixgroup=[UNIX group] type=l However the command getent group | grep 'DOMAIN group indicates this group to be domain one - GID created in accordance to RID backend in use, not the GID of 'UNIX group' as expected. Worth to mention I use the winbind. Strange thing is that I already have such mapping in place for other 'DOMAIN group2' that getent group reports with GID of local UNIX group with all members of the 'DOMAIN group2'. Now the question is how to populate such behavior for other of my groups???

Is there any proof or argument that teams become much more productive by adding more people? I am looking for answers that can be supported by facts and references if possible. What I'm thinking about is that existing devs have to teach the new ones (thus losing overall development time), and then the new developers have to study the code (and tasks) before they can become fully productive.
