• How are hybrid VB6/.Net applications functioning in the Real World?

  I am maintaining a VB6 application and we are studying how to migrate to .Net We are considering doing this gradually by implementing new features in COM visible .Net classes and migrating existing functionality slowly. I found some instructive 'Hello World' examples about how to do this and it works fine with our App. But how is the real world behaviour of these hybrid applications? Are they stable, maintainable? Particular of our program is that more users on the same computer will use it by switching user accounts. EDIT: The VB6 app reads data from a USB connection and stores it in an Access database. The user can call up various views on the data. The data is cached in a hardware device, so interuptions in the reading of it are not fatal.

• Building a Repository Pattern against an EF 5 EDMX Model - Part 1

  I am part of a year long plus project that is re-writing an existing application for a client.  We have decided to develop the project using Visual Studio 2012 and .NET 4.5.  The project will be using a number of technologies and patterns to include Entity Framework 5, WCF Services, and WPF for the client UI.This is my attempt at documenting some of the successes and failures that I will be coming across in the development of the application.In building the data access layer we have to access a database that has already been designed by a dedicated dba. The dba insists on using Stored Procedures which has made the use of EF a little more difficult.  He will not allow direct table access but we did manage to get him to allow us to use Views.  Since EF 5 does not have good support to do Code First with Stored Procedures, my option was to create a model (EDMX) against the existing database views.   I then had to go select each entity and map the Insert/Update/Delete functions to their respective stored procedure. • URL rewriting via forward proxy

  I have an app that runs inside my firewall and talks out to multiple end points via HTTP/HTTPS on a non-standard port e.g. http://endpoint1.domain.com:7171, http://endpoint2.domain.com:7171 What I want to do is route these requests through a forward proxy that then rewrites the URL to something like http://allendpoints.domain.com/endpoint1 (port 80 or 443) then on the other end have a reverse proxy that unwinds what I did on the forward proxy to reach the specific endpoints. The result being that I can route existing app requests through to specific endpoints across the internet without having to change my app software. My questions are: is this even possible? is it a good idea, are their better ways to do this? Can this be done with IIS and Apache as the proxies?

  In these days there are many projects whose aim is to bring new languages to the browser by compiling them to JavaScript. Among the others one can mention ClojureScript, CoffeScript, Dart, haXe, Emscripten, Amber Smalltalk. I understand that in part the response to this answer depends on the particular project. But, anyway: Have you tried any of them? Are these tentatives suitable for production sites? Should I want to try one of those, what are the downsides I should carefully evaluate? By the way, I expect the answer to be slightly misleading for CoffeeScript, since its semantics is very close to that of JavaScript, so I guess it should be easier to make it work seamlessly with the existing JavaScript ecosystem.

• How do I save to an NTFS partition?

  I was using ubuntu 11.04 on my Laptop. While installing it from a DVD, I have created a 10 GB NTFS partition at the beginning of the hard disk, as primary. All other partitions ( swap, a ext3, a ext4 and a FAT32 ) are created in as logical in the extended partition. All were working well in ubuntun11.04. Now the system was upgraded to ubuntu 11.10 via internet and was sucessful. But unable to either create folder/files or to write to existing files in the said NTFS partiton. But files in the partition can read - means mounting done. Same is the case even if logged in as root also. Fortunately no such problem with other partitions including FAT Why it is so, please help.

• How to purge old links in google from an old domain.

  Hey all, Recently, I uploaded a new site to an existing domain and I'd like to figure out how I can forward all links to said domain to a new domain. I'm looking for a wordpress solution if possible, but in the end I I seem myself writing a small header script that I will paste into ever directory's index file saying header('Location:http://xxx.yyy.zzz') Is there a cleaner way to do this without having to resort to managing the whole file structure? No, I do not have access to the apache runtime. Unfortunately it is a shared-host server. Thanks in advance.

  There are several examples of packaging where an application package is built, named, described, even licensed, but contains only setup code and dependencies -- it has no first-class runtime software of its own. I would call this "meta-packaging". This seems to be particularly popular in the open-source world, including examples like kde-meta (Gentoo Portage), Plone, and I'm sure lots of others. I can see how it's a useful practice, but despite it existing as a practice, I couldn't find a formal definition of either "meta-packaging" or "meta-egg" (Python) in searching the web. Is that not the correct term? If it is, is it such common-sense that it needs no formal definition? If not, what is the correct way to put it?

• How do you balance the speed of Sprints with the customer's conservative adoption schedule?

  I'd prefer to have sprints that last 3-4 weeks, but customers don't want to adopt new feature/function every 3-4 weeks. Existing customers are conservative and, once we meet their minimum bar for features and capabilities, they like to remain on a stable release for much longer than 4 weeks. Even a 3-month cycle would be pushing it for them. On the other hand, newer customers tend to have more feature requests, and are willing to follow sprints. But this willingness dissipates after we've met their bar. How do you balance the need for rapid sprints with the customer's conservative view of application change? I'm particularly interested in SaaS scenarios.

  Recently I wrote an small prototype that uses some relatively new technology. Now I wanted to verify if this prototype is usefull and could be used in real world example. But now I have a problem, how can I do that? Normally, it would be a good thing to compare the prototype with already existing similar applications and compare if you perform better, provide better usability, etc. Since I'm not aware of something similar, this is quite difficult Normally, I would see if the requirements of the customers are met. But there aren't any real requirements and no real customers. It as just an idea. So the problem is, how can I get feedback on my prototype to see how it is accepted by potential users and what should be improved in a real implementation?

  I'm looking for a forum that meets these requirements: Login using Facebook/Twitter/OpenID etc. User profiles with reward system Voting/thumbs up function Categories and tags for sorting threads Custom category pages with moderated static header Embeddable threads and categories (For example, a whole category or single thread can be integrated into wordpress) API to users, discussions etc. I've looked at forums like Vanilla, Disqus, OSQA etc, but none seem to match the above "hybrid criteria". Hosted or self-hosted doesn't matter but I'm really looking for something that can be integrated into an existing CMS to replace comments while at the same time have curated category pages and user profiles. • Faking Display tree (Sprite) parent child relationships with rasters (BitmapData) in ActionScript 3

  I am working with Rasters (bitmapData) and blliting (copypixels) in a 2d-game in actionscript 3. I like how you can move a sprite and it moves all it's children, and you can simultaneously move the children creating an interesting visual effect. I do not want to use rotation or scaling however cause I do not know how that can be done without hampering with performance. So I'm not simulating Sprite parent-child behavior and sticking to the movement on the (x, y) axis. What I am planning to do is create a class called RasterContainer which extends bitmapData that has a vector of children of type Raster(extending bitmapData), now I am planning to implement recursive rendering in RasterContainer, that basically copyPixels every child, only changing their (x, y) offset to reflect their parent's offset. My question is, has this been implemented in an existing framework? Is this a good plan? Do I expect a serious performance hit for using recursive methods this way?

  Back in Gnome 2 there was a very useful user account editing gui tool whereby I could easily add or edit a user to a group. For example, I could give a standard user access to something that they hadn't installed or don't have default access too, such as Me-TV. How do I do this in Gnome 3 / Unity? I am not allowed to create the tag "edit user accounts" or similar and there isn't anything similar existing, strangely. I'm guessing there is a totally different way to edit user accounts or no one bothers - perhaps no one shares PCs anymore.

• Ubuntu 11.04 windows XP dual boot problem

  I have installed Ubuntu 11.04 direct from installation disk in a separate partition alongside an existing Windows XP installation. Ubuntu operates fine. I can see the old XP file system and the other network computer and access the internet. The problem is when the computer starts I get the boot selection list for Ubuntu or XP; but I am not allowed to select Windows XP (I cannot scroll down the list with tab or arrows keys). This would be fine for me but the computer is used by other people who are only familiar with windows XP at the moment. I have downloaded and run Boot Repair. When my site comes up in a Google search, there are 2 links displayed underneath: I believe these links are called "Google sitemap" and my question is how to configure them in Wordpress. Because while the right link is pointing to the /ueber-mich URL at the website, the left link was pointing to an non-existing /imprint and I had to add that webpage as a workaround for now. And I'd like to change the /imprint to German /impressum anyway (currently I use mod_rewrite to redirect).

• Showing "Failed" for a SharePoint 2010 Timer Job Status

  I have been working with a bunch of custom timer jobs for last month.  Basically, I'm processing a bunch of SharePoint items from the timer job and since I don't want the job failing because of an error on one item, so I'm handing errors on an item-by-item basis and just continuing on with the next item.  The net result of this, I soon found, is that my timer job actually says it ran successfully even if every single item fails.  So I figured I would just set the "Failed" status on the timer job is anything went wrong so an administrator could see that not all was well. However, I quickly found that there is no way to set a timer job status.  If you want the status to show up as "Failed" then the only way to do it is to throw an exception.  In my case, I just used a flag to store whether or not an error had occurred, and if so the the timer job throws a an exception just before existing to let the status display correctly.

• Javascript slider with fade

  I've been scouring the web for a slider that offers a particular effect, but I can't find one. I'm hoping that someone here will be able to help out... Specifically, I need a slider that will slide left and right through a series of HTML DIVs. However, I also need the old slide to fade out as it slides. This is because I don't what to have a visible frame around the the slider, so I don't want the old slide to be cropped against an invisible edge. It's hard to explain in words, so here's a graphic. In each case the green slide is entering the view, the red one is existing. Is possible, I'd like the slide to use CSS3 transitions where available for the smoothest possible effect. Has only ever come across such a beast?

• Must all new features go through betatest?

  Obviously, small usability fixes and bugfixes go directly into the stable product. What about small new features? Can you afford to just release them after internal testing, or do they have to be betatested by customers first? Situation: This is a young commercial project, produced by a one-person company. It has an existing userbase and is at it's second major version. Previous betatests have produced some results, however most feedback came from the stable product and not from beta versions.

• Does Ubuntu 12.04 supports for B75 boards?

  I want to build a new computer with Intel G840 CPU and Gigabyte B75M-D3H motherboard and install Ubuntu (or Kubuntu) 12.04 64bit on it. However, I'm worried about whether the chip is too new and whether that Linux Kernel now has support for it. According to the article [Phoronix] Intel Core i7 3770K Ivy Bridge Linux Performance Review ,the Linux kernel is ready to work on the chip. Existing Intel Sandy Bridge motherboards/chipsets are compatible with Ivy Bridge processors, but earlier this month Intel launched the new Panther Point chipsets that are already compatible with Linux too: the B75, H77, Z75, Z77, HM75, HM76, UM77, and HM77. But I didn't find further information or cases about running Ubuntu on the chip. So,is it OK to run Ubuntu on the board? Do I need to upgrade the kernel to a newer version (3.4 or 3.5 etc.) to get the system more smoothly? Or should I choose boards with H61 chip? Thank for your response!
