• cheap way to scale a rails application

  I have an application, that is becoming big, but until now, its not giving me a good revenue. That means, short money to re-invest on that. In this scenario, i found a way to make a "cheap distributed rails" deployment. I've got 4 VPS. All of them are in the same physical server. I added a load balance server running HAproxy in one dedicated VPS. There i pointed my virtual ip address where my domain name is associated. Behind this HAproxy i have more two VPS running my rails APP, passenger and memcache. Both apps servers are looking to the same database server, my 4th VPS. So with $44/month, i mounted a distributed environment. It won't be my final choice, but now, that the budget is short, is that a good way to deploy a rails application? Any pros or cons? It worth my $44/month?

• Improve responsiveness of $(...).click on touch interface

  I need access to a web-based on screen keyboard which will be used on a touch interface. This example looks nice and functional, however when I try it on an iPad, the responsiveness it very low IMHO. It's not comfortable to use and sometimes whole words are misspelled due to slow response. Is there a way to improve the experience on this type of on screen keyboard? This implementation uses the $('#id').click(...); function to process the events. Is there a better way to achieve the goal of typing on the screen? Are there better plugins out there? Note: The final application will run on different types of devices. For several reasons, native on screen keyboards are no option.

It's made up of Nodes: class Node { Node next; // some user data } and each Node points to the next node, except for the last Node, which has null for next. Say there is a possibility that the list can contain a loop - i.e. the final Node, instead of having a null, has a reference to one of the nodes in the list which came before it. What's the best way of writing boolean hasLoop(Node first) which would return true if the given Node is the first of a list with a loop, and false otherwise? How could you write so that it takes a finite amount of space and a reasonable amount of time?

  Hello everyone, I've got the following two commands for imagemagick in the command line: convert in.png container-mask.png +matte -compose CopyOpacity -composite out.png composite container.png out.png -compose multiply final.png Those two commands include 3 files: in.png: the file that should be masked container-mask.png: the back/white mask of the areas of container.png where in.png should be visible container.png image that includes the container for in.png, the one that has been masked in black/white with container-mask.png Now the question is how to transpose this commands into PHP calls. • how create a sql database fom a stongly typed dataset

  I'm looking for an easy way to transfer a database schema I have developed inside visual studio as a strongly typed dataset (xsd file) into a corresponding sql server database. Silly me I assumed the process would be forthright, but I can't find out how to do it. I assume I could duplicate the tables column by column, but that seems so error prone. Does anyone know of a way to perform the schema transfer like this? Maybe a tool to translate the xsd file into a corresponding sql server ddl file? Final thought once I have the schema transferred moving data around between the two data stores will be straight forward, its just getting the schemas synced that has me stumped... Thanks, Keith

• Rounding Decimals to whole numbers

  I was looking around and could not find exactly what I was looking for. I want to round all my numbers up to the whole number. Example: 5.9 would be 6 5.5 would be 6 5.1 would be 6 5.000001122 would be 6 5.0 would be 5 I was thinking if I put them into ints that would get rid of the decimal but it did not look right as the decimals were just dropping off. Am I correct here? So I thought about just doing that then adding 1 to the final result which would fix about 99% of the problem but if my result is 5 I do not want to add 1 to it. How would I go about fixing this issue I have?

• Hibernate Lazy init exception in spring scheduled job

  I have a spring scheduled job (@Scheduled) that sends emails from my system according to a list of recipients in the DB. This method is annotated with the @Scheduled annotation and it invokes a method from another interface, the method in the interface is annotated with the @Transactional annotation. Now, when i invoke the scheduled method manually, it works perfectly. But when the method is invoked by spring scheduler i get the LazyInitFailed exception in the method implementing the said interface. • Using thrift to mix development languages

  I am currently developing an application which will require multiple different development languages. I want to use PHP as the final piece of the puzzle - the physical web page construction. This PHP web app will need to contact multiple web services which could be coded in anything from Java to Erlang to Python. Each of these web services will be implemented with an API. My plan is to use Thrift to allow this mix to work. Is this the correct approach or am I mixing up what the whole point of Thrift is?

• How to make scipy.interpolate give a an extrapolated result beyond the input range?

  I'm trying to port a program which uses a hand-rolled interpolator (developed by a mathematitian colleage) over to use the interpolators provided by scipy. I'd like to use or wrap the scipy interpolator so that it has as close as possible behavior to the old interpolator. A key difference between the two functions is that in our original interpolator - if the input value is above or below the input range, our original interpolator will extrapolate the result. If you try this with the scipy interpolator it raises a ValueError. Consider this program as an example: import numpy as np from scipy import interpolate x = np.arange(0,10) y = np.exp(-x/3.0) f = interpolate.interp1d(x, y) print f(9) print f(11) # Causes ValueError, because it's greater than max(x) Is there a sensible way to make it so that instead of crashing, the final line will simply do a linear extrapolate, continuing the gradients defined by the first and last two pouints to infinity. Note, that in the real software I'm not actually using the exp function - that's here for illustration only!

  How should I be using color in my application? I have over a 100 different forms (windows) in my application, and the default windows grey seems like a bad choice to me. One school of thought says pick one neutral color, and use the same one everywhere. Another school of thought says pick a set of neutral colors, and use them same ones within a group of form (e.g., shipping screens might be light green, receiving screens light orange, user administration screens light blue, etc.). The final school of thought says make every form different. We've got millions of colors, why not use them? What should I do and why?

It does this; however, it also seems to report a strange additional value, 99. I figure that the 99 is coming from the computation of the distance between point a and c but I don't understand why it is appearing in the final output as it does.

  Scala comes packaged with bluefish syntax config in misc/scala-tool-support/bluefish/ I have attempted to configure this, as per the README, but there is no effect. cp ~/.bluefish/highlighting ~/.bluefish/highlighting_ cat ~/.bluefish/highlighting_ /opt/scala/scala-2.7.7.final/misc/scala-tool-support/bluefish/highlighting > ~/.bluefish/highlighting I have ensured highlighting is turned on in the bluefish config. I have not used bluefish before and am trying it for the first time because there is syntax highlighting support for it. The README says any file I open that has a .scala extension will have the scala highlighting applied. Instead I see no highlighting.

  Hi All, I am trying to build an ASP.NET 3.5 application based on XML streams from a legacy systems. My issue is once I get the XML I have to built menus and sub menus from the XML as well filter data(XML stream) based on the menu selection without making roundtrip to the Data store(legacy system). Right now I have a DAL which will get the XML stream in the form of XDocument.I was able to built the first level Menu Items, but not the sub Menu Items based on the selection in the Main Menu and then the final content based on the sub menu selection, all this without making a round trip. Is there a way to do this in-memory. Please suggest. thank you. Ranjit

  I've designed an EF4 model (quite complex inheritance, lots of small tables incl. multiple self-referencing), generated (table-per-type) a database and inserted some basic data manually. It works fine in an ASP.Net Dynamic Data Entities web application with full automatic scaffolding. But when in a WinForms application using the same model (I share it as a part of a class library) I construct a query and bind a combo box to it (the way it's shown here), I get an InnerException {"Internal .NET Framework Data Provider error 1004, 0, Unable to find property... I've found a question about the same problem here (incl. a sample to reproduce the error) but no answer. I use final Visual Studio 2010, no beta.

However, once concatenated, the second sout displays a blank / empty. Any reason for this? Am i concatenating it correctly?

• HLSL How can one pass data between shaders / read existing colour value?

  Hello all, I have 2 HLSL ps2.0 shaders. Simplified, they are: Shader 1 Reads texture Outputs colour value based on this texture Shader 2 Needs to read in existing colour (or have it passed in/read from a register) Outputs the final colour which is a function of the previous colour (They need to be different shaders as I've reached the maximum vertex-shader outputs for 1 shader) My problem is I cannot work out how Shader 2 can access the existing fragment/pixel colour. Is the only way for shaders to interact really just the alpha blending options? These aren't sufficient if I want to use the colour as input to my function.

  Hey all, got a little problem here and can't figure out what I am doing wrong. I am trying to animate a UIView up and down repeatedly. When I start it, it goes down correctly and then back up but then immediately shoots to the "final" position of the animation. • Playing with Graphics in Flex

  Hi All, I was just going through one code used to draw one chart. This code is written in the updateDisplayList of the itemrenderer of column chart. I am not good at the graphics part of flex. Can anybody please explain me what this code is doing. • User not being saved, SharedPreferences

  Hi i have a inlogscreen (inlogdialog.xml), which includes 2 EditText (username, passwd) and i have a CheckBox (saveuser) with which the user can decide weather to save the username or not. On the mainform (main.xml) i have a listner for these 3 values: private class OnReadyListener implements MyCustomForm.ReadyListener { public void ready(String user, String pass, boolean save) { username = user; password = pass; } } Now i first want to save the username through SharedPreferences but it doesn`t get saved, can someone help me please? If i check with system.out.println, the username is present in String username. • How to decouple an app's agile development from a database using BDUF?

  G'day, I was reading the article "Database as a Fortress" by Dan Chak from the excellent book "97 Things Every Software Architect Should Know" (sanitised Amazon link) which suggests that databases should not be designed using an agile approach. There's an SO question on agile approaches and databases "Agile development and database changes" which has some excellent answers covering agile development approaches. In fact, one of the answers supplies a brilliant idea of what's needed for each update of the DB. ;-) But after reading Dan Chak's article, I am left wondering if an agile approach is really suitable for large scale systems. This of course leads on to the question of how best to decouple an agile approach for the application that is interacting with the BDUF database design without adding complicated translation layers in the final design employed?
