• Mobile phone detection (brand, model, browser etc)

  What do you use to detect visitor's mobile phone, down to the model if possible? Currently we maintain our own database but it's really getting behind due to lack of manpower to maintain it, so we decided to give 3rd party solution a try. These are my candidates but I don't have time to really try them all: DeviceAtlas - 1 year personal evaluation, but basic license is affordable. Their database look solid with daily update and user-contributed tests / updates. I am favoring this one at the moment. DetectRight - I was recommended this by a colleague but really can't find much from their site. 20k devices -- really? WURFL - Open source, database collaboratively derived from UAProf. So basically if you're going with UAProf solution, you're better off with WURFL. DetectMoBileBrowsers - This looks like the simplest of all. Too bad it's language dependent (PHP). Please share your experience or suggestions!

• Self learning automated movement

  I am trying to make a small demo in Javascript, I have a black border and a car the car travels randomly and a line is drawn of its trail. When the user click inside the area it creates an object (we'll call this the wall). If the car hits the wall then it goes back 3 paces and tries a different route. When its hit the wall it needs to log down its location so it does NOT make that mistake again.   I had the following issues with my Sony Vaio E14115's touchpad on Ubuntu 12.04: Right click not working Vertical scrolling not working Then I followed these steps to fix it: Downloaded a patch for Psmouse sudo apt-get install dkms build-essential cd ~/Desktop tar jxvf psmouse-3.2.0-24-generic-pae.tar.bz2 sudo mv psmouse-3.2.0-24-generic-pae /usr/src cd /usr/src sudo chmod -R a+rx psmouse-3.2.0-24-generic-pae sudo dkms add -m psmouse -v 3.2.0-24-generic-pae sudo dkms build -m psmouse -v 3.2.0-24-generic-pae sudo dkms install -m psmouse -v 3.2.0-24-generic-pae sudo modprobe -r psmouse sudo modprobe psmouse This fixed me the problems of Rightclick and vertical scrolling. But I still have an issue of not able to click and drag ie Clicking the leftmouse button and dragging with another finger. It doesn't move! Maybe it doesn't detect the 2nd finger. When I check the capabilities of my Synaptics touchpad by using xinput list-props "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad"|grep Capabilities I get the following output: Synaptics Capabilities (304): 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1 Please help me out.

• Could someone break this nasty habit of mine please?

  I recently graduated in cs and was mostly unsatisfied since I realized that I received only a basic theoretical approach in a wide range of subjects (which is what college is supposed to do but still...) . Anyway I took the habit of spending a lot of time looking for implementations of concepts and upon finding those I will used them as guides to writing my own implementation of those concepts just for fun. But now I feel like the only way I can fully understand a new concept is by trying to implement from scratch no matter how unoptimized the result may be. Anyway this behavior lead me to choose by default the hard way, that is time consuming instead of using a nicely written library until I hit my head again a huge wall and then try to find a library that works for my purpose.... Does anyone else do that and why? It seems so weird why would anyone (including me) do that ? Is it a bad practice ? and if so how can i stop doing that ?

• How to check that I have recovered from Penguin 2.0?

  I have 3 year old website which has been hit by Penguin 2.0 in May. The website traffic dropped almost 30%. I have been working hard from last 2.5 months on the website and my website's traffic recovered in last week of August. In fact, I am receiving more traffic then ever. When I look at the stats, I find my website's search engine visibility has been improved. It is now appearing for more search queries. My website's impressions have also increased. What I am worried about is that my website is nowhere in top 5 pages for keywords having high competition and carrying the highest search volume. They are few in number but important. Should I consider my current situation as recovery or it's just the partial recovery? If it is only partial, then how come traffic is more then it was before penguin 2.0?

• MacBook Pro (5) touchpad stops working after upgrading from Ubuntu 10.10 to Ubuntu 11.04

  After upgrading from Ubuntu 10.10 to Ubuntu 11.04, my MacBook Pro's touchpad stopped working. It works fine on the login screen, but after logging in it stops working. (Answering my own question, in the hope that it saves someone else a bit of head scratching. I'm a new user, so couldn't answer in a separate post for the next few hours). After the upgrade, your Gnome desktop configuration may have gone awry. There are a few settings which enable or disable the touchpad in certain contexts which may need tweaking to get the touchpad working again. Here's how I got mine working again: Hit Alt-F2, and run 'gconf-editor' Navigate to desktop-gnome-peripherals Ensure that peripherals-touchpad:touchpad is enabled. Ensure that peripherals-bcm5974:disable_while_other_device_exists is disabled. 'bcm5974' is probably specific to my MacBook Pro's hardware, so you may need to search around for variable disable_while_other_device_exists under the entries listed under peripherals. HTH

• Would google consider this a "link scheme"?

  I work for a County Government. In an effort to improve our search engine rankings I was considering contacting some of the other Counties in my state and seeing if we could setup an arrangement where we link to them and they link to us. It seems like a reasonable thing to have a "Other Counties" page with various links on a County website, but it also seems like it's bordering on a link scheme according to Google. When I read Google's article about link schemes it seems like we hit some of the right reasons for having links on another County's site but also some of the wrong. Does anyone have any insight into whether this is a good or bad idea?

• After executing a command in the terminal, I sometimes can't execute another

  First off sorry for the noob question, I'm sure it's been asked before but I have no idea how to phrase it eloquently... Sometimes when I open/run/execute (unsure of proper term) an application (?lol) from the terminal like geany ie: geany filename.php or maybe run a node.js script: node server.js The command will execute fine, but I'm then left without the ability to execute any other commands unless I open another terminal. my root@pcname:~$ is gone and when I try typing in something else and hitting Enter it just breaks to the next line. I've noticed that sometimes I can hit CTRL+D and it'll give me my prompt back (sorry is prompt even the right name for it?) So could someone please explain why this is happening and how I can get back to the prompt without opening another terminal. Thanks, and sorry again for my noobery.

• Headset undetected when plugged in

  I have recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 in my machine which was running windows 7. I have been trying to configure the audio to work exactly as it used to work in Windows but never been able to do so. I have followed this link exactly. I am still not getting the required configuration. aslamixer command shows me with 5 adjustable controls as shown below Master "adjustable" Speaker "adjustable" PCM "adjustable" Front "adjustable" AND Beep "adjustable" Mic Jack Mic In or Lin In S/PDIF OO "in a box" S/PDIF D OO "in a box" S/PDIF P DIGITAL or Analog M It does not detect the headset jack when plugged in. I here mean to say that the sound form the speakers does not go off when I plug in my headset jack. How can I make this working. Some other googling also did not help. I am on Hp Pavilion DV7 machine. The chip is IDT 92HD75B3X5 and the card is HDA ATI SB.

• How to negate current window in gnome shell?

  I dislike that most websites use a black font on white background for their sites, as it gets too tiresome for me to read. Back in the days of 11.04, using Gnome2 with compiz, there actually was a Negative feature that could negate the content of any window, making the background black and the font white. Much easier on the eyes for me. Yet since 11.10, using gnome shell with mutter, I have no idea if there is something alike out there. Hence my question: How do I negate the currently active window in gnome shell? I am not interested in alternative methods, e.g. user styles. I am aware of their existence but I find it much easier to just invert the screen by the hit of a key shortcut. I also want the solution to be application-agnostic. As I also from time to time would want to invert libre-office or some other glaringly white application.

• Does using structure data semantic LocalBusiness schema markup work for local EMD URL's?

  Based on what I have read about Google's recent Panda and Penguin updates, I'm getting the impression that using semantic markup may help improve SEO results. On a EMD (exact match domain) site, that may have been hit, we list location-based products. We are now going to be adding a itemtype="http://schema.org/Product" to each product, with relevant details. However, that product may be available in Los Angeles and also in appear in a Seattle results page. We could add a LocalBusiness item type on each geo page to define the geo location for that page. While the definition states: A particular physical business or branch of an organization. Examples of LocalBusiness include a restaurant, a particular branch of a restaurant chain, a branch of a bank, a medical practice, a club, a bowling alley, etc. We could add use the location property which would simply include the city/state details. I realize that this looks like it is meant for a physical location, however could this be done without seeming black-hat?

New research from Purdue University and Microsoft highlight just how much ad-driven apps tank your battery life. What did they find? That poorly designed ad-modules in free ad-driven applications are terrible at conserving energy. In popular applications like Angry Birds and Free Chess 70% of the energy the application consumed was used to drive the ads.   when I first downloaded Ubuntu to install it, it downloaded quick and caused no problems to my laptop. but then when it came time to install it as one of my operating systems, it wouldn't run because it said a file was missing or damaged. so then I uninstalled it and re-installed it but I still had that same problem. so I tried a flash-drive version but that didn't work either because it wouldn't boot from that, nor would it detect my flash drive, (in this case, an old 4 GB mp3 player). any help or tips and ideas would be great, I just need a decent operating system because windows is getting to be terrible at the moment, just note I wanna run Ubuntu along side windows 8.1
