  • VirtualBox cannot start a virtual machine on Windows 7

    Note that this question is mostly so others can find this information. I ran into a problem recently with my Fedora-14 virtual machine running on a Windows-7 host with VirtualBox. VirtualBox could not start the Fedora virtual machine, but it could start a Ubuntu virtual server machine that was configured for 512 MB of RAM. The Fedora-14 machine was configured for 2 GB of RAM. The Fedora-14 machine had been working a week ago. What had I recently changed...? Answer to follow.

  • Trick XP into having more RAM?

    Hi everyone, Are there any way known to trick an computer with XP to appear to have more RAM? I need to install a specific program (which fits in my system requirements), which is bundled with a number of other programs on an DVD. Unfortunately, the other programs besides the one that I need demand twice the amount of RAM that's available on my computer and the installation is closed due to this. Can I trick my XP computer into have more RAM temporarily to bypass the block in the install executable? Thanks

  • Computer crashes twice/thrice before booting into windows

    I need help. i built a PC, and it behaves very strangely. When i press the power button, the lights come on, fan maxes out, HDD spins, bios shows up etc and then it immediately crashes (powers down) before booting into windows. Then it powers on automatically and this time boots correctly. Sometimes there is just one failed boot and sometimes it takes 2 such boots to correctly start the computer. This unexpected shutdown never happens once it has booted in windows, just between the windows logo and bios menu. Any ideas?

  • How would I measure the amount of RAM needed per Glassfish domain? [closed]

    Possible Duplicate: Can you help me with my capacity planning? In our test environment we have a lot of apps spread out over a few servers and Glassfish domains. To make versioning easier I would have liked to have one Glassfish domain per customer per app (kind of like a heavyweight version of lots of jetty instances). But I have heard that Glassfish is kind of heavy on the resources, and so I would need to measure approximately how many instances would fit in the available RAM. These are low-traffic/low load testing servers, so CPU is not really an issue, though RAM might be. How would I get an approximate measure of how much RAM is needed? This is one Glassfish 3 instance with one heavy EAR application deployed. top? jvmstats? ??

  • Diagnosing RAM issues

    I have an old Acer Aspire T180 desktop. The specs are as follows: AMD Athlon 64 3800+ 2.4GHz 1GB DDR2 SDRAM 160GB DVD-Writer (DVD±R/±RW) Gigabit Ethernet 17" Active Matrix TFT Color LCD Windows Vista Home Basic Mini-tower AST180-UA381B According to the information in the computer's documentation the computer comes with 1 GB of RAM. It has two DDR2 SDRAM sticks. I used to have Windows Vista installed. Then I removed it and install Windows 7, and now I have since removed Windows 7 and installed Windows XP. According to Windows XP with both RAM sticks in the computer has 768 MB. Isn't this supposed to be 1 GB of RAM or 1024 MB of RAM? Is the amount of RAM installed only partly used by the Operating System? Is there's something I'm missing? If I remove either one of the RAM sticks I'm left with 448 MB of RAM. These numbers don't seem to add up. If each of the RAM sticks contains at least 448 MB of RAM shouldn't they (both being in) provide 896 MB of RAM. Even then, isn't that less than a GB of RAM? I'm not too experienced in hardware so I thought this would be the best place to ask. As a follow up question, is the RAM I have enough to run/multitask with Windows XP efficiently? I plan to do a lot of computing with the system (although not gaming), should I invest in more RAM?

  • Frequency of RAM

    I have a very old system hp compaq dx2080. It had 1gb of RAM. I recently bought a EVM DDR2 1 GB PC RAM which had a clock rate of 667Mhz. I have dual booting windows 7 and 8. When I installed it, windows 7 was still using the older 1gb. It showed as 2 gb available and 1gb usable in system properties. I searched around and found that I can change it to max in the msconfig. I did so. I set it 2048. Still, it was using only 1gb. When, I switched to 8, it was using the 2gb. Now, for my question: My system only supported 553Mhz and 667Mhz RAM. In the BIOS, I saw that the new RAM was showing as 800Mhz. Rechecked using speccy and cpu-z. It showed different values between the two. The RAM is labeled as 667Mhz over it. No mistake in that. But, am I missing something? Please help. And, can I continue using it? My point again. There are only two slots.

  • Computer slow after installing 32GB RAM

    I'm currently running very large network simulations for my PhD research, for which I need lots of RAM. I have a Core i7 2600K processor with a Gigabyte GA-Z68AP-D3 motherboard, running Windows 7 professional 64bit. I bought the system with 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600 MHz Corsair Vengeance RAM and the system ran like a dream. I'm planning to upscale my simulations so I removed the 2x4GB RAM and installed 4x8GB DDR 1600 MHz Corsair Vengeance RAM. When I rebooted the system, boot time was much longer than usual (10 mins just to get to login screen). After logging in, the whole system was unresponsive. I tried playing some games (Bioshock 2), but it was unplayable. I've not had this problem before and I have an ATI Radeon HD 5850 graphics card, so that's not the problem. The only thing that's changed is the RAM. I've looked through the specifications of Windows, my motherboard and my CPU and they all state that 32GB of RAM is supported. Does anyone have an idea of what's going on? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    I'm going to upgrade my RAM, but I have no clue what to look for. There is cheap and there is expensive RAM. What should I look for? What are good attributes for intel i5? The i5 CPU and motherboeard supports 1600 MHz (PC3-12800), but there is still to much to choose from. There are CL10 (10-10-10-27) @ 1.5V CL11 @ 1.35V CL9 (9-9-9-24) @ 1.5V CL9 (9-9-9-24) @ 1.65V Higher CL is better? CL is classification? And I guess a high voltage is also good since thats what overclockers do to the ram (increase the voltage)?

    I just installed openjdk6-jre on Ubuntu 10.04 java version "1.6.0_20" OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea6 1.9.2) (6b20-1.9.2-0ubuntu1~10.04.1) OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 19.0-b09, mixed mode) Every time I run "java" I get this error: Error occurred during initialization of VM Could not reserve enough space for object heap Could not create the Java virtual machine. This can be solved by specifying a maximum heap size and running "java -Xmx256m" But is there anyway to permanently fix this error (i.e. set the default heap size to 256MB so that I do not need to specify the max heap size every time I run the command)

  • BIOS says 8GB RAM installed but only 6GB is available

    my machine is a Dell Studio XPS 9100 with 8GB of RAM installed. When I open the BIOS setup and enter the System Info, it shows that my machine got 8GB of RAM installed but only 6GB is available (yes this is from the BIOS only). In Windows 7 (64bit Pro) it shows only 6GB of RAM are available. But if I run CPU-Z then it can detect all 8GB RAM. The machine came pre-configured and I have never opened the case before.

    We restart an apache server every day because RAM usage reaches its limit. Though of value See this serverfault answer, I dont think lowering the MaxClients in the apache configuration is a solution to the unknown root problem. Can you make sense out of the below data?   • memtest86+ crashing on server

    we have a few DELL 1950 servers. 1 of this servers has CentOS6.3 and its randomly rebooting so I suspected it was hardware. (no log generated) the other 4 servers do not randomly reboot. We passed memtest86+ on the 5 servers, and on 3 of them memtest86+ crashes (displaying an odd and colorful screen, like if a video card failed) Although I tested old memtest86 (not +), and all servers did not crash. I also tested other RAM testers utilities, no tool failing. have any of you guys experience this? thanks

  • If I double my ram on a x86 processor, does that double the ram I can use for each individual process?

    I don't understand how 32-Bit OS's use RAM on a per process basis. I've read the max RAM my x86 processor running a 32-bit OS can use is 2^32 = 4gb; but that's just for one process, right? 3DS Max keeps crashing, but it typically can never use more than 2GB of RAM before it crashes, if I increase my RAM from 4-8GB, would that double how much RAM I can use for each individual process or actually cause no change in my performance? Also would increasing my VRAM and getting a better graphics card increase the extent to which individual programs can preform? Lastly, is there any way to upgrade a 86-bit processor to be able to run a 64-bit OS? I feel like it would be ridiculous to sell modern processors that are capped at 4GB of RAM? Thanks.     What is needed to make a GPU fully fed by CPU? Comparing their flops/s is enough? For example, if i could manage to make a very old(pentium-3) CPU with one of Nvidia-Fermi GPU, it would not be able to fed the gpu with data per sec. What is the criteria to fit CPU to GPU exactly when OpenCL or some similar work needed? Of course RAM and BUS will be chosen in a similar way but how exactly?   • Should I buy more RAM for my computer or a better CPU?

    I have recently bought a new laptop, an ASUS N56VJ-S4149H. I bought it to use it in all possible ways I could want, so that would be gaming downloading and streaming movies browsing the web and programming software. So far it has been running great but one thing annoys me a little bit. I frequently play Mount&Blade: Warband, it's a great game and you should check it out. Everything runs smoothly but only when I turn down the 'Texture Detail'. Otherwise it will lag a lot and I can't really play. Now my question is: Is this a problem of not enough RAM? At first I was really sure it was but after thinking about for a while I'm not anymore. My computer only has 4 Gigabytes of RAM and there is still a slot open. So will it improve when I buy another 8 Gigabytes? EDIT: It has an Nvidia GeForce GT 635M inside. and an Intel Core i5 3230M CPU with 2,6 GHz. Help and answers are really appreciated. Thanks to all.

  • Recommendations for SSD for server and database use?

    SSDs are a new technology and they are constantly improving. A lot of the posts here were posted in 2009 when SSDs where less mature and not as fast. What was recommend back then is probably out of date today because of better options. The SSD is used to hold SQL Server databases. Size is probably 128G. The database is used with a CMS and web server so web pages need to get their data and render as fast as possible. Which modern SSD is recommended for such a use? Is there an SSD better than Intel X-25 E/M in terms of performance/cost? (I am also evaluating cost between : RAM + UPS (semi persistent) vs SSD for same amount of gigabytes. No RAID is involved)

    My motherboard is Intel D865GVHZ I m using 512 mb ram and recently i purchased a 512 mb ram of same company same speed(333) and same manufacturer. but my pc is not booting in dual dynamic paging mode . It is not at all booting and the screen freezes on windows logo screen at start up. i checked installing individual rams one by one and the pc is working with either of the ram installed individually. But wen i install both the pc is not working. One more point i found is my one ram has 8 chips on both sides while the other ram has 4 chips on both sides. Googling isn't helping, I get that it's something with VM, but why is it suddenly showing up in /var/log/messages? Edit: I take it it's showing this because the number of pages it could free ("nr") is negative. Which is presumably a bad thing. I found patches for newer kernels that display a more useful message to this effect. Still not sure what this means though, or what I need to do about it.
