• Old Sony Digital Tape Handycam, imported Video is sped up?

  Friend gave me their OLD handycam and a bunch of tapes asking me to put them on a DVD. The model is Sony DCR-TVR103 and it records onto Hi8 Digital tapes. It has a firewire port also. I am trying to use import function in iMovie on OS X 10.6. Every import though the video is super fast, like playing in fast forward. Ever seen anything like this? How can I import this video? Thank you.

• CSS Trouble, Why does it move itself?

  Hello! I am stuck on the CSS part, am helping a friend to implement one thing on her webpage. Its a dropdown menu and i got everything working the way i want it to. My problem is that it moves itself to the beginning of the row? http://gazet.se/TestPages/Test.aspx Its just below the logo and as you can see, its on the correct line but not in the correct position (should be between the purple "Nyhetsbrev" and the black "Experthörnan"-images, but it ends up on the beginning of the row instead? Any ideas?

• Using fgets to read strings from file in C

  I am trying to read strings from a file that has each string on a new line but I think it reads a newline character once instead of a string and I don't know why. I suppose I could read a dummy string to absorb that extra blank and then nothing would be shifted, but that doesn't help me understand the problem and avoid in the future.

  Hi, Sometimes I add an attribute to some of my controls. Like: <a href id="myLlink" isClimber="True">Chris Sharma</a> I know it is not a valid html. But it helps me in some cases. Is this considered as a bad practice? A friend of mine says that it is ok for Intranet environment but on internet it might not be find friendly by search engines. If it is not a good practice, what are the best practicess? Thanks

• Display exception information and Debug.Print() messages in Immediate Window

  A friend of mine claims that calls to Debug.Print() as well as first-chance exception notifications appear in the Immediate Window for him. I found this surprising; for me they only appear in the Output Window. MSDN claims (here) that you can implicitly enable them in the Immediate Window by explicitly disabling them in the Output Window. But that doesn't work for me; the messages are not shown in either window if I disable this. The Immediate Window remains empty. How do I get the Immediate Window to display this information?

  I'm looking to get some practice coding solutions to algorithm puzzles on a whiteboard. A friend is going to read puzzles to me (as if he were interviewing me), and I'll solve them on a whiteboard. Does anyone know any great books with algorithm puzzles that would be useful for this? I found a book called Puzzles for Programmers and Pros, but it only has six reviews on Amazon, so I'm not sure how good it really is. If anyone has any recommendations, I'd really appreciate it. • Create a HTML table from nested maps (and vectors)

  I'm trying to create a table (a work schedule) I have coded previously using python, I think it would be a nice introduction to the Clojure language for me. I have very little experience in Clojure (or lisp in that matter) and I've done my rounds in google and a good bit of trial and error but can't seem to get my head around this style of coding. • Using SWFObject, the flash moves 1 pixel to the right on Firefox

  Please check this page: http://islandhideaway.weebly.com/ For whatever reason, the flash slideshow moves over 1 pixel when opened in Firefox on my Mac. All other browsers render it fine, but only on Firefox it leaves a 1 pixel white gap on the left! I am using the most recent version of SWFObject. This unfortunately is a garbage Weebly site and I cannot use jQuery in the system so I can't do a real gallery... so let's save the whole "don't use Flash for that" pep talk. It's a favour for a friend and I am already aware of better ways to do it. :)

  Recently a friend of mine had gone from a high level NOC position to a developer. Before that he was just doing the help desk stuff. He has no degree, only the usual MIS/networking certifications and as far as I know only tinkers with code on the weekends. I can see where in some scenarios having a good understanding of configurations, packets, users, OU's, etc would be extremely beneficial to a developer. My question is this, how many full time developers started off this way? Even how many people dual wield the responsibility of developer/systems administrator/network administration?

• How can I find the program making a harmonica sound?

  A friend has a Windows XP SP3 machine that plays a harmonica sound for about 5 seconds throughout the day at what seems to be random intervals (every couple hours). My question is how can I find the program making this sound? Is there a Windows API hook for monitoring audio access? I've gone through and checked all the standard Windows sounds in the Control Panel and right now the theme is set to no sounds and I personally checked to make sure none of the events have a sound specified. I also checked the Task Scheduler to make sure there wasn't something scheduled to go off every couple hours. Any ideas on how to go about finding the bugger?

• Can a Flash-based CFGRID render basic HTML in the cells?

  (I'm very new to both Flex and CF -- more a .NET/ExtJS guy, so I'm a duck out of water.) I'm tweaking someone else's CFGRID code. It uses Flash format--HTML isn't an option since it would require redesigning the entire interface around the grid. Tha data I want to put in the grid have some very simple HTML elements-- <sub>, <sup>, and HTML entities like &deg;. I can imagine <i> or <b> might be there in the future. How can I tell a particular CFGRIDCOLUMN to render its contents as HTML? I've heard this is possible, but Google is not my friend tonight. Stuck with CF7 for a few more weeks, so if there are any CF8/CF9-specific solutions, please let me know those as well, but that won't help my immediate need.

• No Flash, How do i handle jcupload ?

  I am using http://www.jcupload.com/ (basic) to upload files. I am considering having a friend write a more custom version or to do magic with ajax; so the solution should be able to work without that. With jcupload i include css, a script and write <div id="jcupload_content"></div> in my html and i am done. Problem is, with no flash i get an object box. Instead i would like is an iframe or a html form to upload the file. How do i do this? Should i detect flash from javascript and overload the div myself if no flash is available? How do i detect if flash is available? with jquery i know i can write something like $('#jcupload_content').innerHtml = blah; How do i handle the flash part?

• SQL Server Table locks in long query - Solution: NoLock?

  a report in my application runs a query that needs between 5 - 15 seconds (constrained to count of rows that will be returned). The query has 8 joins to nearly all main-tables of my application (Customers, sales, units etc). A little tool shows me, that in this time, all those 8 tables are locked with a shared table lock. That means, no update operation will be done in this time. A solution from a friend is, to have every join in the query, which is not mandetory to have 100% correct data (dirty read), with a NoLock, so only 1 of this 8 tables will be locked completly. Is that a good solution? For a report in which 99% of data came from one table, unlock the less prio tables?

  Hello I have a problem search through the photo tag that facebook user got tagged. SELECT pid FROM subject = uid uid = are the friend of the logged in user. I have received a list of tagged for particular user since I wanted to count how many he/she being tagged, I counted on my server code after retreive an XML from facebook. I can see some of my friends got tagged 60, when I looked at his/her profiles, he/she has more than 60 around 200 tagged photos. Did I miss anything in my query? I created a dummy account and upload a photo including tagging but I receive the right number of tagged photos of his.

  Hi, I have just tried to send a workbook to a friend that has a chart with a drop-down box on it. In excel 2007 I have used: If Chart2.Shapes(2).ControlFormat.ListCount = "16" Then To check the size of the list so that it doesnt get entered in again (resulting in an extremely long list that repeats itself). This line works well in Excel 2007, but gives a Object doesn't support this property or method. error in Excel 2002. What is the difference between working with shapes in 2002 vs 2007?

  A friend has begged our consulting firm several times to build an iPhone app. We are reluctant to jeopardize the friendship and charge market rates. At the same time, we're so busy it would be imprudent not to charge fairly. We tried referring her to other shops, but she doesn't feel comfortable with anyone but us. How do people charge friends? • Lazy non-modifiable list in Google Collections

  I was looking for a decent implementation of a generic lazy non-modifiable list implementation to wrap my search result entries. The unmodifiable part of the task is easy as it can be achieved by Collections.unmodifiableList() so I only need to sort out the the lazy part. Surprisingly, google-collections doesn't have anything to offer; while LazyList from Apache Commons Collections does not support generics. I have found an attempt to build something on top of google-collections but it seems to be incomplete (e.g. does not support size()), outdated (does not compile with 1.0 final) and requiring some external classes, but could be used as a good starting point to build my own class. Is anybody aware of any good implementation of a LazyList? If not, which option do you think is better: write my own implementation, based on google-collections ForwardingList, similar to what Peter Maas did; write my own wrapper around Commons Collections LazyList (the wrapper would only add generics so I don't have to cast everywhere but only in the wrapper itself); just write something on top of java.util.AbstractList; Any other suggestions are welcome.

  Being a web developer (php, symfony, doctrine) for 2 years now, I was recently asked by a friend to come up with a desktop solution. So I developed a project, installed a LAMP on his machine and he is mostly happy using it now. But I'm not. It just doesn't seem right to wait for a server response from a localhost. Obviously php isn't suited for desktop development. So, my question is: what language \ framework would you advice a php programmer if he was going to develop a desktop application (something that you can install, that has it's own gui, but utilizes the similar concepts of web apps: css, javascript, orm). I would like to bring up Python as a possible answer to my question. Does anyone have an experience of developing a desktop app with Python, utilizing an ORM and(or) HTML-based GUI?

  I have created an organizational chart using ASP.NET on web page. The web page is using strict DOCTYPE and following W3C standards. The chart has a hierarchical layout decided by the manager field in the table that contains employees in the organization. The chart layout has nodes with employee image and other details like job title, department and contact details. Nodes are beautifully arranged and connected by lines (only horizontal or vertical or both). A lot of DIV elements are used (to avoid table) for connecting lines and arranging the chart properly. As suggested by my friend, using DIVs for connecting lines in the chart is semantically wrong. Is there a way by which I can make it semantically correct? Or, am I using HTML for the wrong purpose?

• Problem while loading the application on iPAD?

  Hi, I developed a simple application for iPAD. I want to test the app how it works on the device. I have paid developer licence, and i have added the device id and created the app id and i have downloaded the provisioning profile using both. The same way how we will build the app for iphone i have done for ipad. i have sent the provisioning profile and .ipa file to my friend to load on to the ipad device(same device which i have added in the developer.apple.com). when he tried to drag n drop the provisioning file on to the device from iTunes it is giving below error. "abc.mobileprovision" was not copied on to the iPAD, because it cannot be palyed on this iPAD I am not able to understand what the exact error is. Can anyone please let me know how to dump the applicatio on to the ipad device?

• PHP won't let page update automatically every day/6 hours

  A friend build a ranking system on his site and I am trying to host in on mine via wordpress and godaddy. It updates for him but when I load it to my site, it works for 6 hours, but as soon as the reload is supposed to occur, it errors and I get a 500 timeout error.   Hello, Our aim is to build timelines saying about periods of time when user was online. (It really doesn't matter what user we are talking about and where he was online) To get information about onliners we can call API method, someservice.com/api/?call=whoIsOnline whoIsOnline method will give us a list of users currently online. But there is no API method to get information about who IS NOT online. So, we should build our timelines using information we got from whoIsOnline. Of course there will be a measurement error (we can't track information in realtime). Let's suppose that we will call whoIsOnline method every 2 minutes (yes, we will run our script by cron every 2 minutes). For example, calling whoIsOnline at 08:00 will return Peter_id Michal_id Andy_id calling whoIsOnline at 08:02 will return Michael_id Andy_id George_id As you can see, Peter has gone offline, but we have new onliner - George. Available instruments are Db(MySQL) / text files / key-value storage (Redis/memcache); feel free to choose any of them (or even all of them). So, we have to get information like this George_id was online... 12 May: 08:02-08:30, 12:40-12:46, 20:14-22:36 11 May: 09:10-12:30, 21:45-23:00 10 May: was not online And now question... How would you store information to implement such timelines? How would you query/calculate information about periods of time when user was online? Additional information.. You cannot update information about offline users, only users who are "currently" online. Solution should be flexible: timeline information could be represented relating to any timezone. We should keep information only for last 7 days. Every user seen online is automatically getting his own identifier in our database. Uff.. it was really hard for me to write it because my English is pretty bad, but I hope my question will be clear for you. Thank you.

• To be effective on your home projects is it better using the same technologies used at work?

  To be more productive and effective, is it better to start developing an home project using the same technologies used at work? I'm not talking about a simple hello world web page but an home project with all bells and whistles that one day, maybe, you could sell on internet. This dilemma is often subject of flames between me and a friend. He thinks that if you want to make a great home-made project you need to use the same technologies used daily at work staying in the same scope too; for example, a c++ computer game programmer should develope an home-made c++ game. I'm pretty sure that developing using the same technologies used at work can be more productive at beginning, but surely less exciting and stimulating of working with other languages\ides\libraries out of your daily job. What's your opinion about that?

  I have been reading some django tutorial and it seems like all the view functions have to go in a file called "views.py" and all the models go in "models.py". I fear that I might end up with a lot of view functions in my view.py file and the same is the case with models.py. Is my understanding of django apps correct? Django apps lets us separate common functionality into different apps and keep the file size of views and models to a minimum? For example: My project can contain an app for recipes (create, update, view, and search) and a friend app, the comments app, and so on. Can I still move some of my view functions to a different file? So I only have the CRUD in one single file?
