• Here's what I want... what do I tell my IT guy I need?

  I work in the graphics department for a real estate brokerage, and we deal with a lot of photos. Agents take the photos, upload them to me, I touch up and standardize the photos, then I add them to an in-house server for future use by the graphics dept. I'd like to make the "sanitized" photo files available to the agents to use when they want, but I don't want the agents poking around the graphics department's files (things get misplaced, renamed and messed up in a hurry). What would be perfect is if we could create a read-only "mirror" (correct term?) of that server that could be accessed by the agents as needed, but which wouldn't feed back into our "sanitized" file system. What do I tell the office IT guy I need (platform-agnostically, because I don't know what he's running)? I never get to see him face-to-face, so I've got to word this as carefully and explicitly as possible. Thoughts? Thanks in advance for your feedback

• How do I download photos tagged of me from Facebook?

  I want to be able to download (and back up) photos tagged of me in Facebook. I'm specifically not interested in my own photo albums - I uploaded them and therefore have them already in better quality than FB. What I want are the photos other have uploaded that have me in them. I have a couple of hundred of these now, and don't much fancy three hours of right-click save-as... There seem to be a couple of utilities that pop up with a quick search, but (call me paranoid) I'm wary about giving some random freeware app my login and password. Social safe looked promising, but as it doesn't support this feature at the moment it's kinda pointless. Can anyone recommend one that they've actually used? I'd consider an open source one - I'm a programmer and don't mind digging through to check that it doesn't do anything nasty.

• Any Recommendations for a Web Based Large File Transfer System?

  I'm looking for a server software product that: Allows my users to share large files with: The general public securely to 1 or more people (notification via email, optionally with a token that gives them x period of time to download) Allows anyone in the general public to share files with my users. Perhaps by invitation. Has to be user friendly enough to allow my users to use this with out having to bug me as the admin. It needs to be a system that we can install on our own server (we don't want shared data sitting on anyone else's server) A web based solution. Using some kind or secure comms channel would be good too, eg, ssh Files to share could be over 1 GB. I found the question below. There are too many services that provide this, but I want something we can install on our own server. A last resort would be to roll my own. Any ideas appreciated. I don't see how him writing services is going to be easy for him to maintain going forward (large IT admin overhead) or simple for his users and the general public to work with.

• RDP problem with Vista and Windows 7 destination

  I use a server a home to host a bunch of concurrently running Hyper-V VM's with different OS's and software for testing. I have Vista on the laptop, all latest SP's and patches. The server is Server 2008 R2, fully patched. The guests are a mix of XP, Vista, Server 2008 and Windows 7. If I connect to the Win XP or Server 2008 guest using RDP, it is always good. Very quick, no speed issues. If I connect to the Vista or Win 7 guests, the response time is so slow it is unusable. Usually 6 or 8 seconds, and at times it is to long to measure! This happens from both the laptop running Vista, and the server running Server 2008 R2. Does anyone know what the issue is with RDP on Vista and Windows 7 destinations? I did read this: http://blog.tmcnet.com/blog/tom-keating/microsoft/remote-desktop-slow-problem-solved.asp and that is not the problem I have applied that change to all PC's.

• Color Temperature in PowerPoint 2010

  I'm teaching PowerPoint 2010 and it's got some great new features. Unfortunately, one that I can't wrap my head around is the the new "Color Temperature" feature for pictures. I do understand color temperature in general (i.e. the lower the number, the "colder"/"oranger" - the higher the number, the "hotter"/"bluer"). The way PowerPoint implements it seems opposite from most other programs - like Photo Filter in Photoshop. So I need to understand what this feature is in more detail so I can explain it to my students. Does anyone know?

• SharePoint - force user to accept AUP when first logging in etc

  We're looking to move a bespoke intranet across to SharePoint. One query that has come up is whether we can do the following easily: When user logs in for the first time they should be forced read and accept an Acceptable Use Policy for the site. Agree a separate agreement that relates to their data being shared with other parties. (Optional) upload their profile photo. They can skip this step if they don't have one but they should be prompted to do it each time they login subsequently. The above is all nice and easy in a bespoke app but I can't see how to do this with SharePoint. Can we build a custom workflow that is tied to the user logging in? So far I can only find how to attach workflows to libraries and lists.

  I'm starting to use CrashPlan to backup my Win 7 PC. I've got it writing to my external HD (for quick local restores) and to CrashPlan Central (for offsite storage). I'd like to backup my entire C:\ drive (the only partition) in a way that: Preserves all of my installed software and configuration, but Avoids backing up log files and other ephemeral / temporary files that are regenerated during normal operation of the OS. Which files and/or directories should I be excluding from backups? I'd like to make this a community wiki, so that we could all contribute towards a definitive list. • Cannot import video from a DV camcorder over FireWire

  I have a JVC GR-D320 miniDV camcorder that has a FireWire interface. I recently upgraded to Windows 7 RTM (64 bit, fresh installation). When I connect my camcorder through FireWire, I can see it in Device Manager without any warnings or problems, but I cannot capture videos from my miniDV tapes. After connecting, AutoPlay displays "Import Video could not find a compatible digital video device. Verify that the digital video device is properly connected and turned on." When using Windows Live Photo Gallery after selecting the import option, my camera is not listed. The camera used to work perfectly on the same hardware before upgrading to Windows 7 RTM 64 bit (it used to work fine on Windows XP SP3 32 bit). Googleing revealed that people had the exact same problems in Vista, but no solution was provided. Any help?

  I have a Squid proxy server that controls all internet traffic for my network. I need a way to stop users from downloading big files (say 50MB) in my network. I banned some famous ports (e.g. torrent) but some downloads are possible by HTTP port. Obviously I cannot ban port 80! A simple solution is limiting maxmimum number of the simultaneous connections for each IP (e.g. 3 connections). It's possible in Squid with this config: acl ACCOUNTSDEPT 192.168.5.0/24 acl limitusercon maxconn 3 http_access deny ACCOUNTSDEPT limitusercon But this solution has really bad impact in web browsing, because any smart browser get different parts of a website by several connections simultaneously to speedup web browsing. But if we have a maximum number of connections, the browsers will fail to get some parts and the website will be shown partially and some parts/images/frames will not be shown. So, can we limit maximum number of persist connections? I think this policy will works: Specify Maximum number of connections that is alive for 10 seconds But Number of simultaneous connections for every IP is unlimited But how can we implement this policy when Squid? With which config? UPDATE: artifex and Tom Newton offered using a bandwidth-limiting approach to fight against downloaders. But bandwidth-limiting in Squid has a shortcoming: It's static and cannot dynamically change. So a person has a limited bandwidth not matter how many people are using internet (maybe nobody!) Also, this solution cannot help to stop people from downloading. They still can download but in a lower speed. But if we find a way to terminate persist connections (or any connection that is alive more than a specific time), downloading big files will be almost impossible (always there is some way!)

• Get source and destination of outbound traffic in pfSense

  I'm looking at the traffic graph in pfSense (Version 1.2.2), which we're using as a router / NAT / ect on our network. Recently, I'm seeing a sudden, constant spike of 15 - 30kbps traffic outbound, that is unusual for our network (normally its below 2kbps, we're mostly all inbound traffic) Is there any way to determine what the source of this traffic is, or where it's going? (Just an internal IP address for source, and external IP address for destination would be all I need) I've already tried switching the traffic graph to 'LAN' and watching the host list on the right side, but it seems ... flakey. The numbers it shows seem to fade in and out at random, and the values never add up to anywhere near the graph values. • NFS Datastore Appears Empty!

  Hi guys, I've got an NFS server problem. The datastore connected and seems to be a valid datastore in both the vSphere client and under /vmfs/volumes. The issue is that it appears to be empty! I can create files (eg: touch /vmfs/volumes/nfs_common/thefile) and it is correctly written to the nfs store. I can verify this by looking on the nfs server itself. But the vmkernel only sees an empty datastore; the file disappears. Another freebsd box can mount the same NFS share and see the files correctly. Some useful data: ESXi 4.0.0 Build 208167 NFS is unfsd running on a Buffalo Linkstation Pro Duo (a bit hacky I know). The share has file system permissions set to 777 at the moment. My /etc/exports is as follows, and as I say it connects fine. /mnt/array1/ESX_Shared 192.168.16.0/255.255.255.0(insecure,rw,sync,no_root_squash,no_subtree_check) The ESXi servers can also successfully mount NFS shares from other NFS servers. Once traffic reaches ~ 20 people (online) - website start loading really really slow. Actually website can't be loaded about 30-60 sec. What should I do? Buy more RAM / CPU on the same VPS? Move to a dedicated server or maybe myhosting.com just sucks? What do you recommend?

• Giving a scanner-printer-combo a zoom function when copying ?

  You know how everytime you go to a photocopying shop, photocopiers always have a neat zoom function (it can take whatever you give it, and zoom it in/out, so your copy comes out smaller or larger). I got one of those neat 3-in-one printer machines. It has a copy button on it, but it also has some software that comes with it (Epson SX115 to be exact is the model). Apart from going into some photo manipulation application, is there some way (software) to give it that feature. So, in short, I need something that can scan a page, scale it to let's say, a quarter of its size, and then print it out ? Anyone knows of anything like that ?

• How important is dual-gigabit lan for a super user's home NAS?

  Long story short: I'm building my own home server based on Ubuntu with 4 drives in RAID 10. Its primary purpose will be NAS and backup. Would I be making a terrible mistake by building a NAS Server with a single Gigabit NIC? Long story long: I know the absolute max I can get out of a single Gigabit port is 125MB/s, and I want this NAS to be able to handle up to 6 computers accessing files simultaneously, with up to two of them streaming video. With Ubuntu NIC-bonding and the performance of RAID 10, I can theoretically double my throughput and achieve 250MB/s (ok, not really, but it would be faster). The drives have an average read throughput of 83.87MB/s according to Tom's Hardware. The unit itself will be based on the Chenbro ES34069-BK-180 case. With my current hardware choices, it'll have this motherboard with a Core i3 CPU and 8GB of RAM. Overkill, I know, but this server will be doing other things as well (like transcoding video). Unfortunately, the only Mini-ITX boards I can find with dual-gigabit and 6 SATA ports are Intel Atom-based, and I need more processing power than an Atom has to offer. I would love to find a board with 6 SATA ports and two Gigabit LAN ports that supports a Core i3 CPU. So far, my search has come up empty. Thus, my dilemma. Should I hold out for such a board, go with an Atom-based solution, or stick with my current single-gigabit configuration? I know there are consumer NAS units with just one gigabit interface (probably most of them), but I think I will demand a lot more from my server than the average home user. Any advice is appreciated. • Should I split my website into different servers

  I have a website where a user uploads photos, the photos gets resized and thumbnailed, and stored on the server. At the same time, there are some INSERTS into a MySQL table regarding the photo uploaded (like description, user id etc). The site currently runs off a managed VPS, and I love the support it provides. However it is expensive to store the many small photos and the resizing and thumbnailing processes do cause spikes on the app performance. (Amazon S3 is pretty expensive, especially considering the costs for uploading many small files) Question: Will it be a good idea to move the image processing operations and image storage to another server which is an unmanaged dedicated server with a much lower cost/gb and keep the current VPS for its 24/7 support and hosting the webapp? Or should I move the entire site to the dedicated server? • Sony Vaio: I can't type 'less and greater than' signs in TR keyboard layout

  I have a strange trouble with my Sony Vaio VPCCW21FX. My laptop has a Turkish Q keyboard and I'm using TR keyboard layout on Windows 7 x64 Home Premium. The problem is, I cannot find a usual way to type less than or greater than signs unless I switch to EN keyboard layout. These signs are showed on the keyboard together with the Turkish letters "Ö" and "Ç", as you can see from the below photo of my laptop's keyboard. So, how can I type these signs without switching to EN keyboard layout? I tried Fn and Alt keys but it doesn't work. I need to use TR layout since I need Turkish letters while writing my documents and e-mails.

• How to de-dupe identical photos that have a slightly different file size?

  I imported many photos using the new "camera import" feature of Dropbox. Many of those were duplicates of photos previously imported by direct copying from the camera. Strangely, the Dropbox import appears to slightly reduce the file size. E.g. here on the right is the file imported through Dropbox: Comparison of the two files using pdiff returns "Images are binary identical", but tools such as fdupes or even the Picasa "show duplicate files" feature, consider them as unique. What can be the cause of this file size change? Is there any way to undo it? Most importantly: how can I de-dupe efficiently without regard to file size comparison? (running pdiff comparison over all photo pairs in my library is obviously impractical...) A solution for either OS X or Windows would do.

• If USB is not listed in BIOS as a boot option, does that mean the machine can't boot from USB?

  I just purchased an Asus Zenbook Prime UX31A-DH51 with Windows 8. I want to wipe the drive and do a clean install but USB is not listed as a boot option in the BIOS. Does this mean it is not possible? Here is a photo of my BIOS options. This is the only option I get when I click Add New Boot Option. Not sure if I can add USB here. * Update * Asus tech emailed and said: "Unfortunately with Windows 8 you can not boot from bios."

• best way to quickly share multiple photos without permanently hosting them

  I find that I'm often asked to share lots of photos with someone, enough that uploading each one individually to them gets tedious when I would like to drag and drop the whole bunch. I could put them on photobucket, but some of them are semi-private; private enough that I don't want them to be easily found on image hosting sites. Are there any convenient ways of sharing these photos quickly but still being able to remove them from the inter-webs afterwards (without too much hassle)? I have found Yahoo Messenger complete version has great photo sharing options; but not everyone has it and I can't expect people to download it just to see some photos.

• Software for printing small photos on larger paper with easy layout snapping

  Have some photos and pictures to print (graphs, but that doesn't matter here). So far when printing I inserted them in MS Word, played with layout on the paper, and after half a day, finally managed to get it just right. Usually then, the power runs out :-) Anyways, does anyone know of any software which enables me to easily put up some kind of a layout (one under the other, or some rectangular grid) where I can just "snap" photos next to each other, before printing the whole thing. I know I can do that in pretty much any photo editing program, but the problem is that that pixel hunting takes time ... and is generally a very annoying process, expecially when you don't want to edit the photos in mind, just print them out. Anyways, I'm sure you get the general idea ... Suggestions ?

• Software that will burn DVDs with a SFV or Pararchive file for each disc?

  I'd like to burn several thousand RAW files (.DNG) of around 10-30 MB each to DVD to backup my photo archive. I'm looking for software that can do this and include an SFV-type file on each disc burnt. These are my requirements: compression is optional, and probably not desirable due to the extra time involved files should be spread amongst the discs as self-contained units, i.e. I don't want to have to load files from more than one disc to be able to read the files on that disc, so that excludes WinRAR's spanning options I don't want to spend time writing ISO images first as this will be a task I'll need to repeat often as I add new images to my archive - the software should write to the DVDs for me as simply as possible I'd like the SFV/Pararchive/recovery record to be stored with the files on each disc, so it only references the files on that particular disk Thanks in advance!

• Mac OSX snow leapord move to folder on keystroke

  On a weekly basis I have to organize thousands of photos (in groups of up to five thousand) into folders depending upon what they contain (to then narrow them down to the best photos of the same thing). This means I am constantly scanning through photos and organizing them into a folder. THe problem is, the process of stopping my scan, then dragging the photo all the way into a folder myself is bogging me down. Would it be possible to, for instance using something like applescript, or even going so far as using XCode/Cocoa, to create a shortcut that moves whatever I have selected in the finder to a pre-specified folder? Does somethign like this already exist?
