  Currently our team develops Web Applications and now we are going to Windows Forms applications. I have created the inception phase for our Windows Forms project structure. eg: ApplicationSolution --> Security Project(Login Authentication) a. • Set and Verify the Retention Value for Change Data Capture

  Last summer I set up Change Data Capture for a client to track changes to their application database to apply those changes to their data warehouse. The client had some issues a short while back and felt they needed to increase the retention period from the default 3 days to 5 days. I ran this query to make that change: sp_cdc_change_job @job_type='cleanup', @retention=7200 The value 7200 represents the number of minutes in a period of 5 days.     When developing an ETL solution in SSIS we sometimes need to do range lookups in SSIS. Several solutions for this can be found on the internet, but now we have built another solution which I would like to share, since it's pretty easy to implement and the performance is fast.   You can download the sample package to see how it works. Make sure you have the AdventureWorks2008R2 and AdventureWorksDW2008R2 databases installed. (Apologies for the layout of this blog, I don't do this too often :))   To give a little bit more information about the example, this is basically what is does: we load a facttable and do an SCD type 2 lookup operation of the Product dimension. This is done with a script component.   First we query the Data warehouse to create the lookup dataset. The query that is used for that is:   SELECT     [ProductKey]     ,[ProductAlternateKey]     ,[StartDate]     ,ISNULL([EndDate], '9999-01-01') AS EndDate FROM [DimProduct]     The output of this query is stored in a DataTable:     string lookupQuery = @"                         SELECT                             [ProductKey]                             ,[ProductAlternateKey]                             ,[StartDate]                             ,ISNULL([EndDate], '9999-01-01') AS EndDate                         FROM [DimProduct]";           OleDbCommand oleDbCommand = new OleDbCommand(lookupQuery, _oleDbConnection);         OleDbDataAdapter adapter = new OleDbDataAdapter(oleDbCommand);           _dataTable = new DataTable();         adapter.Fill(_dataTable);     Now that the dimension data is stored in the DataTable we use the following method to do the actual lookup:   public int RangeLookup(string businessKey, DateTime lookupDate)     {         // set default return value (Unknown)         int result = -1;           DataRow[] filteredRows;         filteredRows = _dataTable.Select(string.Format("ProductAlternateKey = '{0}'", businessKey));           for (int i = 0; i < filteredRows.Length; i++)         {             // check if the lookupdate is found between the startdate and enddate of any of the records             if (lookupDate >= (DateTime)filteredRows[i][2] && lookupDate < (DateTime)filteredRows[i][3])             {                 result = (filteredRows[i][0] == null) ? -1 : (int)filteredRows[i][0];                 break;             }         }           filteredRows = null;           return result;     }       This method is executed for every row that passes the script component. This is implemented in the ProcessInputRow method   public override void Input0_ProcessInputRow(Input0Buffer Row)     {         // Perform the lookup operation on the current row and put the value in the Surrogate Key Attribute         Row.ProductKey = RangeLookup(Row.ProductNumber, Row.OrderDate);     }   Now what actually happens?!   1. Every record passes the business key and the orderdate to the RangeLookup method. 2. The DataTable is then filtered on the business key of the current record. The output is stored in a DataRow [] object. 3. We loop over the DataRow[] object to see where the orderdate meets the following expression: (lookupDate >= (DateTime)filteredRows[i][2] && lookupDate < (DateTime)filteredRows[i][3]) 4. When the expression returns true (so where the data is between the Startdate and the EndDate), the surrogate key of the dimension record is returned   We have done some testing with this solution and it works great for us. Hope others can use this example to do their range lookups.

• TFS 2010 : Unable to add Project to a collection

  This morning I'm trying to setup Team Foundation Server 2010 to demo for my team. As this is just a demo, I thought I would install it on my Windows 7 machine which also serves as my development machine. My development machine uses Visual Studio 2008 Team Suite. I installed Team Explorer 2008 and then reapplied SP1. Finally I installed and setup TFS 2010. TFS by default gave me administrator privileges. I started up Visual Studios, and connected up to the Collection just fine. However, I'm unable to create a new project and get the follow error message: "TF30172: You are trying to create a team project either without required permissions or with an older version of team Explorer. Contact your project admin..." To check to permissions, I used my home computer which is running Visual Studio 2010. On this machine I was able to connect up to the same TFS instance and create a project no problem. So it looks as though it is a team explorer problem, but everywhere on the web people are saying not only am what I'm trying to do possible, but they have done it themselves. What am I missing to add a project to TFS 2010 under Visual Studio 2008?

  Will this increase my Virtual private Server failing rate if i :- install Microsoft Window Server 2008 Enterprise install SQL server enterprise 2008 install IIS 7.5 install ASP.Net Mvc 2 install Microsoft Exchange << should live inside MWS2008 ? or standalone without OS? install Team foundation server << should live inside MWS2008 ? or standalone without OS? on one mini VPS with specification of DELL Poweredge R710 shared plan DDR3 ECC RAMs 16GB and -- 1GB for this VPS using DELL PERC 6i raid controller (this thing alone about 1.5k-2k) and the SAS HDD (15K RPM) (146GB) -- 33GB to this VPS each hdd is freaking fast over 300MB read / write possible with proper tuning the motherboard is a DELL and it has twin redundant PSU (870watt 85%eff) its running on Intel Xeon 5502 (Quad Core) x2 so about 8 physical proc (fairly share) is there any ruler to measure for this about one VPS can only install what what what service ? because of my resource is limited =.@ may i know if it is install in this way,maybe it seem like defeat the way of "VPS"... what will happen ? or any guideline on this issue (fully configuring the window server 2008 R2) ? • Please advise on VPS config choice (with SQL Server Express)

  Hi all, I might be interested in getting a VPS hosting plan for some small personal sites and .NET projects. Was thinking of Softsys Bronze Plan, as my current shared host plan is with them too. The stuff I want to host has grown beyond the capabilities of a Shared hosting plan, and I also want more control over the IIS/ASP.NET configuration, that's why I'm considering VPS. The main config details would be: Hyper-V 30 GB of diskspace 1 GB of RAM More info here: http://www.softsyshosting.com/Windows-VPS-HyperV.aspx Does anyone have experience with this plan (or something similar from another host), and maybe could answer these couple of questions: Bronze has a total diskspace of 30GB. Is the OS part of this quota or not ? If so, how much does a base configuration with Windows 2008 take up in diskspace ? Would you advise Windows 2008 R2 or Normal. Or would you advise to use Windows 2003 with this config. I'm planning on running a SQL Server Express install too. Would 1 GB of RAM be enough for both the Windows 2008 (R2) and SQL Express. The database load will not be that very high (a couple of 1000 records returned each day). The DB will most likely be far away from the 4GB limit, that's why I'd go for a SQL Express instead of paying extra licensing costs for a SQL Web install. But I'm more concerned about performance. Would you recommend Softsys as a VPS host ? I've been with them for one year for my Shared hosting plan, and have no complaints so far. Also, as I have no VPS experience, what are the pitfalls I need to be aware of, in terms of performance mainly, but maybe in other areas too ? Mathieu
