  • [Android] Is disabling landscape mode unforgivable?

    Our application could support landscape mode without any problem, but it is such a pain that we are thinking about forcing portrait mode. Question: Is it BAD? The main problem is that changing orientation generates random crashes on many screens. Avoiding those crashes would potentially allow us to spend more time on the core aspects of the app. Will the same crashes happen when users switch apps anyway? Also, are there landscape-oriented devices where our app will become useless?

  • How to extract images from flash viewers?

    This deals with the (diverse) flash viewers that let you zoom in on images on websites. I’m trying to extract the large, zoomed-in image rendered by the viewer. In many cases the images seem to be dynamically called by the viewer, or are created only for the part of the image you are zooming on at that point. Ideally, the approach here would be a programmatic one that could be called on an identified flash element. Expect there is nothing universal, but interested in the top few approaches that will grab most cases.

  • Possible to use Javascript to access the client side's network(knowingly)

    I recently found an exploit in my router to basically give me root access. The catch? There is a nonce hidden form value that is randomly generated and must be sent in for it to work that makes it difficult to do "easily" So basically I'm wanting to do something like this in javascript: get http://192.168.1.254/blah use a regex or similar to extract the nonce value put the nonce value into a hidden field in the current page submit the form by POST to http://192.168.1.254/blah complete with the nonce value and other form values I want to send in. Is this at all possible using only HTML and Javascript? I'm open to things like "must save HTML file locally and then open", which I'm thinking is one way around the cross domain policy. But anyway, is this at all possible? I'm hoping for this to be able to run from at least Firefox and Chrome. The audience for this is those with some technical know how.

  • How to "scan" a website (or page) for info, and bring it into my program?

    Well, I'm pretty much trying to figure out how to pull information from a webpage, and bring it into my program (in Java). For example, if I know the exact page I want info from, for the sake of simplicity a Best Buy item page, how would I get the appropriate info I need off of that page? Like the title, price, description? What would this process even be called? I have no idea were to even begin researching this.

  • Is post-sudden-power-loss filesystem corruption on an SSD drive's ext3 partition "expected behavior"?

    My company makes an embedded Debian Linux device that boots from an ext3 partition on an internal SSD drive. Because the device is an embedded "black box", it is usually shut down the rude way, by simply cutting power to the device via an external switch. This is normally okay, as ext3's journalling keeps things in order, so other than the occasional loss of part of a log file, things keep chugging along fine. However, we've recently seen a number of units where after a number of hard-power-cycles the ext3 partition starts to develop structural issues -- in particular, we run e2fsck on the ext3 partition and it finds a number of issues like those shown in the output listing at the bottom of this Question. Running e2fsck until it stops reporting errors (or reformatting the partition) clears the issues. My question is... what are the implications of seeing problems like this on an ext3/SSD system that has been subjected to lots of sudden/unexpected shutdowns? My feeling is that this might be a sign of a software or hardware problem in our system, since my understanding is that (barring a bug or hardware problem) ext3's journalling feature is supposed to prevent these sorts of filesystem-integrity errors. (Note: I understand that user-data is not journalled and so munged/missing/truncated user-files can happen; I'm specifically talking here about filesystem-metadata errors like those shown below) My co-worker, on the other hand, says that this is known/expected behavior because SSD controllers sometimes re-order write commands and that can cause the ext3 journal to get confused. In particular, he believes that even given normally functioning hardware and bug-free software, the ext3 journal only makes filesystem corruption less likely, not impossible, so we should not be surprised to see problems like this from time to time. Which of us is right?   • How can I play an online video in full screen AND type in a text editor at the same time?

    I watch instructional videos that play in Silverlight such as the ones at http://windowsclient.net/learn. I watch them in full screen on my left monitor. While the video is playing, I want to be able to type notes in a text editor on my right monitor. However, as soon as I press a key, the video exits full screen mode. How can I force the Silverlight player to stay in full screen mode even as I type in another application?

  • Can only see part of the screen when connecting via NX, how can I control NX size?

    I'm using NoMachine's NX client on OSX 10.7.2 to connect to an NX server running on Ubuntu 10.04.3. I've chosen the Gnome desktop during the connection creation. The NX screen that opens is smaller than the Gnome screen running "behind" it it looks like it's 1024x768, while the screen "behind" it looks to be running 1680x1050. The result is naturally very inconvenient (e.g. can't see the taskbar, can't click lower options in popup menus, etc.). In the past I've used NX client successfully to connect and see the entire screen. Resizing the NX window only resizes the transferred image, but does not let me see more of the Gnome desktop. Playing with the NX client display options also does the same. How can I control the size of the NX client, and make it show the entire Gnome desktop?

  • Do you know of any ways to effectively manage a triple screen setup brightness?

    I use a desktop with multiple monitors I have tried F.lux and it is a great app for changing the color from 3500k-6500k... but doesn't adjust screen brightness. (I recommend you try it) I've googled for hours trying to find an app that will work to let me easily manage screen brightness either by a "dim when idle" or a dynamically updating screen brightness based on the time of day. Windows 7 desktop doesn't seem to have options for me to adjust brightness on the system, and manually changing three separate monitors is too much of a chore? Anybody have some recommendations? Perhaps a way to script this, knowledge of how to use the supposed dynamic screen brightness functions that Windows was supposed to add in Windows 7?

What I'm doing though is launching the direct movie/tv episode in chrome from XBMC using XBMCflicks. It's like pasting the video html address in the address bar and going directly to the video feed. I do not know why the "welcome screen" takes a long time (about 40 sec), but yesterday only took about 10 sec., I tried to defragment the disk and do a virus & spyware scan with antivirus, but still the "Welcome screen" comes along. How do I get the welcome screen to pass by faster when Windows boots up?

    This is about Windows 8 RTM. How can I change the lock screen in Windows 8 that appears after connecting to the machine via RDP? You can change your lock screen for your user account like so: Hit the Windows key. Right click your user name in the upper right hand corner, choose Change Account Picture. Click Lock Screen, choose a new picture. However, if you then connect to the computer where you've done this from another computer via RDP, using the same account, the physical machine you've connected to will display the "default" user lock screen - a stylized Space Needle / Seattle picture. It's not a bad picture, but I'd like to change it.

  • Laptop + External Monitor: Possible to Scale Mouse-crossover Position?

    I have a laptop with a 16" screen @ 1366x768 resolution, and a 24" external monitor at 1920x1200 resolution. I'm extending the Windows 7 desktop onto the other screen. The 24" is the secondary monitor, and is positioned so the bottom of that screen lines up with the bottom of the 16" screen. Currently, if I move the mouse to the top portion of the 24" screen, then move left, the mouse will stop at the edge of the 24" screen until I move it down far enough to get into the range of the 16" screen. So that's all pretty standard; but I'm wondering if there's any software out there that will allow me to "scale" the mouse-crossover position, such that if I'm at the TOP of the 24" screen and move left, the mouse will cross to the TOP of the 16" screen, whereas if I'm at the BOTTOM of the 24" screen, crossing over will position the mouse at the BOTTOM of the 16" screen. So then, if the mouse cursor is on the 24" screen at (x,y) position (10,600), and I move 20 pixels left, the mouse is now on the 16" screen at position (1356,384). Anyone know of such a solution?? Note: I also use Ubuntu, so if there's a solution to this for X, but not Windows, I'd be interested in that also.

I'm aware that the setterm command can disable this, but it's a per-session thing. How can I make it so the machine never ever blanks the screen in text mode, even when it's first booted up and sitting at the login prompt?

  • How do I set Windows 7 as default OS but retain Windows 8 Boot screen?

    I am dual-booting between Windows 7 and Windows 8 on a test workstation, and typically reboot 3-4 times per day. If I set Windows 8 as the default OS, I get the Windows 8 graphical boot screen, which is easy to 'see' during the boot process, but if I set Windows 7 as the default OS, I only get the Windows 7 text-mode boot screen. While I mostly want Windows 7 (at the moment), on the occasions I restart to get to Windows 8, I often 'miss' seeing the text-only boot and have to restart twice. Is it possible to (and if so, how do I) configure this such that Windows 7 is the default OS, but still having the Windows 8 boot screen appear? Edit: Just so you guys know, I've tried setting Windows 7 as the default both from the Windows 8 Boot screen itself, and from within Windows 8 -- neither of these have the desired effect.

    Anyone know why doesn't the Windows command prompt window maximize to the full screen size? To the best of my knowledge, even in the new Windows 7 the command prompt window(cmd.exe) doesn't maximize to the full screen size like all other windows. This behavior is quite annoying for me, and I'm sure to many others as well. Note: The size of the command prompt window can be changed, but the size remains fixed regardless of the screen size.

  • What can cause a black or blank screen when pressing logout or switch user in windows 7

    The situation I have here is related to a brand new dell machine with a GTX260 video card. Put simply after one user logs in when that user either 'switch users' or 'logs out' windows goes to a black/blank screen. The TV screen that is used with this computer previously functioned fine with fast user switching on an XP machine. The new computer is windows 7. The TV is not outputting any error messages like 'no signal' or anything else that would be displayed if the computer was off. You can fix the problem by cycling the input on television, after cycling the input the welcome screen appears as normal. What I want to know is what on earth is windows doing that would cause the video card to stop sending the same signal to the monitor when the user logs off or switches users. I mean as far as I can tell the resolution is identical between windows and the welcome screen. Or perhaps if somebody has experienced this before a fix would be great too.

    Currently Windows 8 will get to the start screen a good 10-15 seconds before my startup programs have loaded. Since these include my touchpad driver as well as a gamma correction program, I would prefer that they would load before this point. Is there anyway to do this - either by delaying Windows 8 showing the start screen, or perhaps by somehow having these programs run before reaching the login screen?

    I have been using ubuntu 12.04 for a few months now. but have now come across a problem that i cant get past. I am stuck at the log on screen= i enter my password but i get a black screen flases up and the log on prompt reappears!!! tried using terminal prompts and i actually have loggin it- but not according to the main log onm screen. I cant get my desktop active as the log on prompt is there. when i put a wrong password in i get an invalid password message- with the correct password the log on screen just reappears!!!please help.
