• SQL bottleneck, how to fix

  This is related to my previous thread: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3069806/sql-query-takes-about-10-20-minutes However, I kinda figured out the problem. The problem (as described in the previous thread) is not the insert (while its still slow), the problem is looping through the data itself Consider the following code: Dim rs As DAO.Recordset Dim sngStart As Single, sngEnd As Single Dim sngElapsed As Single Set rs = CurrentDb().QueryDefs("select-all").OpenRecordset MsgBox "All records retreived" sngStart = Timer Do While Not rs.EOF rs.MoveNext Loop sngEnd = Timer sngElapsed = Format(sngEnd - sngStart, "Fixed") ' Elapsed time. MsgBox ("The query took " & sngElapsed _ & " seconds to run.") As you can see, this loop does NOTHING. You'd expect it to finish in seconds, however it takes about 857 seconds to run (or 15 minutes). I dont know why it is so slow. Maybe the lotusnotes sql driver? any other ideas? (java based solution, any other solution) What my goal is: To get all the data from remote server and insert into local access table

• Multiple records with one request in RESTful system

  All the examples I've seen regarding a RESTful architecture have dealt with a single record. For example, a GET request to mydomain.com/foo/53 to get foo 53 or a POST to mydomain.com/foo to create a new Foo. But what about multiple records? Being able to request a series of Foos by id or post an array of new Foos generally would be more efficient with a single API request rather than dozens of individual requests. Would you "overload" mydomain.com/foo to handle requests for both a single or multiple records? Or would you add a mydomain.com/foo-multiple to handle plural POSTs and GETs? I'm designing a system that may potentially need to get many records at once (something akin to mydomain.com/foo/53,54,66,86,87) But since I haven't seen any examples of this, I'm wondering if there's something I'm just not getting about a RESTful architecture that makes this approach "wrong".

• python object AttributeError: type object 'Track' has no attribute 'title'

  I apologize if this is a noob question, but I can't seem to figure this one out. I have defined an object that defines a music track (NOTE: originally had the just ATTRIBUTE vs self.ATTRIBUTE. I edited those values in to help remove confusion. They had no affect on the problem) class Track(object): def __init__(self, title, artist, album, source, dest): """ Model of the Track Object Contains the followign attributes: 'Title', 'Artist', 'Album', 'Source', 'Dest' """ self.atrTitle = title self.atrArtist = artist self.atrAlbum = album self.atrSource = source self.atrDest = dest I use ObjectListView to create a list of tracks in a specific directory ....other code.... self.aTrack = [Track(sTitle,sArtist,sAlbum,sSource, sDestDir)] self.TrackOlv.AddObjects(self.aTrack) ....other code.... Now I want to iterate the list and print out a single value of each item list = self.TrackOlv.GetObjects() for item in list: print item.atrTitle This fails with the error AttributeError: type object 'Track' has no attribute 'atrTitle' What really confuses me is if I highlight a single item in the Object List View display and use the following code, it will correctly print out the single value for the highlighted item list = self.TrackOlv.GetSelectedObject() print list.atrTitle

• Drupal: Content in blocks from node_reference fields?

  After only a few weeks of working with Drupal I've come up with a recurring problem, which I don't really have an optimal solution to, so I'm hoping that someone here might be able to give some best practice pointers. What I have is a region inside my node.tpl.php, which is populated with blocks that display content from two different CCK fields of the type node_reference. This works fine when displaying a single node. The problem appears when I need to use a view. For example, lets say I have a news listing, and a single news item view. When I display the single news item I can use the news node node_reference field to reference whatever material I would like to have in my sidebar, but when on the news listing view I would like to reference nodes separately. What would be the best practice to solve this? I'm having a few ideas, but none seem like the logical choice, how would you do?

• ASP.Net Web Site Project vs. Web Application Project

  I'm trying to convince my co-workers to switch from a web site project to a web application project, because I want the use of the project file. However I can't diffuse this argument against: The web site project allows each page to be compiled into a single dll. Their argument is this enables easy fixing of errors found after publishing. This is contrast to how the web application project compiles all code behind into a single dll. Is updating a single page's dll essentially different to updating the entire site's dll? Is there some way to compile each page's code behind into a seperate dll in the web application project? Are there some prohibitive (performance,memory?) costs to compiling each page's code behind into seperate dll's that we are unaware of? Why is the feature(?) to compile each page to separate dlls in web site projects and not web app projects?

  I'm the webmaster for a debate team, and we're trying to find a tool that allows us to have multiple team members say when they're available and see who else is available during those timeslots for one-on-one practice rounds. I suppose we could use something like Doodle, but that would involve recreating the Doodle every week. There are many scheduling tools available, but they're usually built so that you can sign up to meet with a specific individual (think a doctor or a professor's office hours), whereas you could be paired with ANY individual.

• How do I determine problems with bootup based on this bootchart?

  So I've been having issues with lots of hard-drive usage during bootup and long bootup lately, and I installed bootchart to get these two bootcharts, but damn are there a lot of unfamiliar system stuff on there, it's hard to tell what is a warning sign, and what is simply normal during boot. • Are #regions an antipattern or code smell?

  In C# code it allows the #region/#endregion keywords to made areas of code collapsible in the editor. Whenever I am doing this though I find it is to hide large chunks of code that could probably be refactored into other classes or methods. For example I have seen methods that contain 500 lines of code with 3 or 4 regions just to make it manageable. So is judicious use of regions a sign of trouble? It seems to be to me.

• Can you use back references in the pattern part of a regular expression?

  I there a way to back reference in the regular expression pattern? Example input string: Here is "quoted text" some quoted text. Say I want to pull out the quoted text, I could create the following expression: "([^"]+)" This regular expression would match quoted text. Say I want it to also support single quotes, I could change the expression to: ["']([^"']+)["'] But what if the input string has a mixture of quotes say Here is 'quoted text" some quoted text. I would not want the regex to match. Currently the regex in the second example would still match. What I would like to be able to do is if the first quote is a double quote then the closing quote must be a double. And if the start quote is single quote then the closing quote must be single. Can I use a back reference to achieve this?

  this site is intended to allow users to sign up and pay for a service, they will be able to pay using Paypal and Authorize.net since I am using two different payment gateways, it makes me wonder where I want to keep the user information. Authorize.net offers CIM, but some users will pay with paypal therefore Authorize.net won't have all user's information Would the best solution then be to not use CIM and store everything within my member database module? for the record I am using OSE for Joomla for my subscriber service

• Embed a JRE in a Windows executable?

  Suppose I want to distribute a Java application. Suppose I want to distribute it as a single executable. I could easily build a .jar with both the application and all its external dependencies in a single file (with some Ant hacking). Now suppose I want to distribute it as an .exe file on Windows. That's easy enough, given the nice tools out there (such as Launch4j and the likes). But suppose now that I also don't want to depend on the end user having the right JRE (or any JRE at all for that matter) installed. I want to distribute a JRE with my app, and my app should run on this JRE. It's easy enough to create a Windows installer executable, and embed a folder with all necessary JRE files in it. But then I'm distributing an installer and not a single-file app. Is there a way to embed both the application, and a JRE, into an .exe file acting as the application launcher (and not as an installer)?

• Different return XML in a WCF Operation

  I am writing a service to a international HTTP standard, and there is one method that can return three different XML results, call them Single, Multiple and Error. Now I've written an IXmlSerializable class that can consume each of these results and generate them. However, WCF seems to insist that I can only have a single return XML root name. I have to choose an XmlRoot for my custom object of either Single, Multiple or Error. How can I set up WCF so that I can choose at runtime what the root will be? Then I scratch it out and start again, then when I think I have the correct solution for the problem I begin writing the code. Is it normal to think for days without writing any code? Is this a sign that I am approaching the problem entirely wrong? It makes me nervous to not getting any tangible code written in my IDE.

  Hello. Suppose I have such chunk of a sentence: (NP (NP (DT A) (JJ single) (NN page)) (PP (IN in) (NP (DT a) (NN wiki) (NN website)))) At a certain moment of time I have a reference to (JJ single) and I want to get the NP node binding A single page. If I get it right, that NP is the parent of the node, A and page are its siblings and it has no children (?). When I try to use the .parent() method of a tree, I always get null. The API says that's because the implementation doesn't know how to determine the parent node. Another method of interest is .ancestor(int height, Tree root), but I don't know how to get the root of the node. In both cases, since the parser knows how to indent and group trees, it must know the "parent" tree, right? How can I get it? Thanks
