  Ok, I'm having the exact same problem as in this question http://serverfault.com/questions/59635/outbound-ftp-on-server-2008-r2-stalls but the accepted answer didn't help me much... I followed the third step of this http://learn.iis.net/page.aspx/309/configuring-ftp-firewall-settings/ guide in order to configure my firewall for FTP, and I am able to authenticate, however, the data channel doesn't seem to be passing through the firewall. If I disable the firewall, everything works fine. Hope someone can help me, as this is really starting to annoy me. Best regards, x3ro

• issue when promoting a second server as domain on r2 2008

  Hello, I'm in an odd situatuion here, I've upgraded my network to a 2008 domain from a 2003 with out any issue, this works fine and all the FSMO are in one DC, I was about to install a second domain on a 2008R2 and this error is coming up again and again. I The problem is I keep getting an area telling me that I need to run adprep /domainPrep /forestPrep, but when I run it on the First DC, it tells me this has already been run and updated and it is aborted. Does anyone have any ideas on why I can't add a Server 2008 machine as a domain controller?

• Active X Control issue on Terminal Server 2003

  I have a security camera system which can be viewed remotely via a web browser. It works excellent only with IE 6 and up and requires an ActiveX control "ERViewer.ocx". Some users require to view the cameras via Windows Terminal Server, but when they try to open the link to the DVR they get the prompt ti install the ActiveX and then the browser crashes when they try to install it. I logged in as admin and got the same issue. I called the tech support of the DVR but they have no idea, in other words, the usual useless tech support. Here is what I get in the error log Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 7.0.6000.16735, faulting module ERViewer.ocx, version 1.6.0.8, fault address 0x000064d7. I am sure it could be some kinda permission getting an ocx to run in IE. What else can I tweak?

• Ubuntu server very slow out of the blue sky (Rails, passenger, nginx)

  I run Ubuntu server 8.04 on Linode with multiple Rails apps under Passenger + nginx. Today I've noticed it takes quite a lot of time to load a page (5-10 secs). And it's not only websites, ssh seems to be affected too. Having no clue why this may be happening, I started to check different things. I checked how the log files are rotated, I checked if there's enough free disk space and memory. • Fonts doesn't render in Chrome or IE in Windows Server 2008

  When I visit, for example, http://www.bolagsverket.se from a user account on this Windows 2008 Server, Chrome displays the site but all the text is gone. When I try in IE it's even worse, it doesn't even load the page, I jsut end up with this: http://dl.pixelstore.se/image/0y1f0y0w1J39 The fonts used for this site is (from CSS): font-family:Frutiger,Frutiger Linotype,Univers,DejaVu Sans Condensed,Liberation Sans,Nimbus Sans L,Geneva,Helvetica Neue,Helvetica,Arial,Tahoma,sans-serif If I edit the CSS through Chrome Developer Tools, and erase all fonts until Arial it suddenly works. The strange thing is that everything works fine from the administrator account, it's just (all) the user accounts that doesn't work. My guess is that Chrome/IE is asking for the fonts but somehow they are restricted in the user account. Instead of just ignoring the fonts they can't find they try to render them anyway. Any clue?

  Hello, I have a machine with WIN server 2008 R2 installed, when the machine boots up, it says keyboard failure. The keyboard I had was from an older machine and was PS/2, I got a PS/2 to USB converter in order for it to work, but it says keyboard failure and doesn't work. Is it because it's pretty old and that's it, or does it have to be USB? I'm going to look into a new one, but want to make sure I don't get this issue again... Thanks.

In our environment the end user Remote Desktop Client settings take precedence. If printing is disabled on the client but enabled in the user's AD profile then printing is not available. Is this working by design or can I change something to allow the user environment settings in AD to override the end user settings RDC settings?

• Logon Failure: the target account name is incorrect after making a ghost image of a server

  I recently replaced a failing SCSI drive in a Windows 2000 server with an IDE drive. I made an image of the SCSI drive and Ghosted it. The purpose of the machine was to give out DHCP at one location and host a couple of files. When I restarted the machine with the new drive, DHCP appears to be working fine, but I cannot get to any of the shares. Instead, I get the following message when attempting to navigate using Explorer. Logon Failure: the target account name is incorrect It appears that this machine is not communicating with the main domain controller. Changes to user accounts (performed on the domain controller) are not replicated on this machine.

• Server 2008 won't run executables from CMD prompt without .exe extension

  On one of our production server 2008 boxes, I cannot run executables from a CMD prompt without supplying the full filename, including the '.exe' extension. For example, when running "java" produced the usual "is not recognized as an internal or external command" message, I assumed I had borked the path and/or java_home variables. However, even navigating to the %java_home%\bin directory and typing "java" produced the same error. If I type "java.exe" instead, all works perfectly. The problem does not only affect java.exe. Even Microsoft executables suffer the same problem -- ping fails, ping.exe works; ipconfig fails, ipconfig.exe works; manually created batch file 'test' only works when invoked explicitly as 'test.bat'. Any bright ideas?

• Terminal Server/Win2K3: Users can't write to their My Documents or Temp folders

  I have a situation where a bunch of users are running our software on a Terminal Services machine on Windows 2003 Server. I've removed most permissions from the User group, but made sure they all have the appropriate permissions for their own application folders, as well as for their Documents and Settings folder. For some reason, even though everything seems to be set up properly, users can't create or delete files from their My Documents, Temp or other D&S folders. Whatever could be going on? I thought this was going to be straightforward, but clearly it's not! :-) Thanks for any help!

• PowerShell: Read Excel to Create Inserts

  I’m writing a series of articles on how to migrate “departmental” data into SQL Server. I also hold workshops on the entire process – from discovering that the data exists to the modeling process and then how to design the Extract, Transform and Load (ETL) process. Finally I write about (and teach) a few methods on actually moving the data. One of those options is to use PowerShell. There are a lot of ways even with that choice, but the one I show is to read two columns from the spreadsheet and output statements that would insert the data using a stored procedure. Of course, you could re-write this as INSERT statements, out to a text file for bcp, or even use a database connection in the script to move the data directly from Excel into SQL Server. This snippet won’t run on your system, of course – it assumes a Microsoft Office Excel 2007 spreadsheet located at c:\temp called VendorList.xlsx. It looks for a tab in that spreadsheet called Vendors. The statement that does the writing just uses one column: Vendor Code. Here’s the breakdown of what I’m doing: In the first block, I connect to Microsoft Office Excel. That connection string is specific to Excel 2007, so if you need a different version you’ll need to look that up. In the second block I set up a selection from the entire spreadsheet based on that tab. Note that if you’re only after certain data you shouldn’t get the whole spreadsheet – that’s just good practice. In the next block I create the text I want, inserting the Vendor Code field as I go. Finally I close the connection.   I am currently using free version of Google Apps for hosting my email.It works great for my official mails my email on Google is [email protected]. In addition I'm sending out high volume mails (registrations, forgotten passwords, newsletters etc) from the website (www.mydomain.com) using IIS SMTP installed on my windows machine. These emails are sent from [email protected] My problem is that when I send email from the website using IIS SMTP to a mail address [email protected] I don’t receive the email to Google apps. (I only receive these emails if I install a pop service on the server with the [email protected] email box). It seems that the IIS SMTP is ignoring the domain MX records and just delivers these emails to my local server. • Non-English Character Display in Oracle SQL Developer

  I get a variation on this question at least once a week, if not more frequently. I’m from Israel, and the language on the databases is Hebrew. When I use the old and deprecated SQL*Plus (windows rich client) I can see the hebrew clearly, when I use the latest SQL Developer, I get gibberish. This question appears on the forums about every week or so as well. So what’s the deal? Well, it starts with a basic misunderstanding of NLS Client parameters. These should accurately reflect the language and locality setup on your LOCAL machine. DO NOT COPY what’s set in the database. The these parameters work together with the database so that information can be transferred back and forth correctly. Having the wrong NLS parameters locally can be bad. [ORACLE DOCS]Setting the NLS_LANG parameter properly is essential to proper data conversion. The character set that is specified by the NLS_LANG parameter should reflect the setting for the client operating system. Setting NLS_LANG correctly enables proper conversion from the client operating system character encoding to the database character set. When these settings are the same, Oracle Database assumes that the data being sent or received is encoded in the same character set as the database character set, so character set validation or conversion may not be performed. This can lead to corrupt data if conversions are necessary. OK, so what are you supposed to do? Set the Font! 9 times out of 10, this preference fixes the problem with display issues. Make sure you set a Font that supports the characters you’re trying to display. It’s as simple as that. This preference defines the font used to display characters in the editors and the data grids. If you have it set to a font that doesn’t have Hebrew character support – you’re not going to see Hebrew in SQL Developer. A few years ago…wow, like 15 years ago, I learned that the Tohama Font is pretty Unicode-friendly. Bad Font Selection A Font that’s not non-English friendly Good Font Selection Exact same text, except rendered with the Tahoma font Summary Having problems seeing non-English text in SQL Developer? Check the font! And do not start messing with NLS parameters without talking to your DBA first.
