  Using a square 17" lcd monitor, and setting the Monitor to display text in larger font than default, some of the pages in QB have the bottom 2 or 3 lines chopped off. QB support has no ideas for a different/larger monitor that would solve the problem for those of us with 50 something eyes. Seems like everyone is going to the widescreen format, but when we tried one on the QB stuff, it spreads out the page to the point that it is deformed...too wide. Does anybody make a new square screen monitor in 19, 20, or bigger that would solve this issue. we can't be the only ones experiencing this.

• MacBook Pro - 72k vs 54k rpm drives - Heat and Noise

  I am looking at a new 15" MacBook Pro for development purposes. I am planning to run a Virtual Machine for about 50% of my work (Windows 7 x64, IIS, SQL Server, and VS 2010). The upgrade from a 54000 rpm drive to a 72000 rpm is only $45. From what I understand the faster rotational speed of the 72000 rpm drive will help virtual machine performance. However, I am concerned that additional heat and fan noise might be an issue. I will be running mostly on A/C power so decreased battery life is not a major concern for me. Since I would be running with a Core i7 processor which gives off a fair amount of heat already I was wondering if it might be best to stay at 54000 rpm for the hard drive. What do you all think?   I'm batch transcoding some 50 GB of video files on a USB hard disk which is connected to a wlan router. The drive is mapped as a network drive on my Windows 7 laptop. The speed handicap of the wlan causes some parts of the processing to become unnecessarily slow, so I would like to do the following with PowerShell: List the names of the files on the network drive to be transcoded Copy the first file to a temporary folder on my laptop Simultaneously Transcode the file in the folder Begin copying the next file from the network drive to the temporary folder After transcoding and copy have both ended, Delete the file which has been transcoded from the temporary folder Begin transcoding next file in the temporary folder Loop until all files have been processed How would I be able to do this with PowerShell? The multitasking part is an obstacle for my skill/persistence combination.

• TFS2010 - Correctly setting up Host Header

  We have a TFS2010 install on a Win2008R2 Server running IIS7. I've created a host header for TFS and want to use that instead of machineName:8080. I am getting weird behavior from it now. Every other time I log in I get: TF31002: Unable to connect to this Team Foundation Server: http://web2/tfs. Team Foundation Server Url: http://web2/tfs. Possible reasons for failure include: - The name, port number, or protocol for the Team Foundation Server is incorrect. - The Team Foundation Server is offline. - The password has expired or is incorrect. Technical information (for administrator): The request failed with HTTP status 404: Not Found. I force a reconnect and voila - there it is. Also, connecting to the web site rarely works but connecting via VS2010 works 50% of the time. What do i need to change to stabilize this?

• KVM Guest not reachable from host

  Hello, I'm running Ubuntu server 9.10, installed KVM etc. Created the bridge network following instructions on help.ubuntu.com/community/KVM/Networking Created a windows 2008 guest using virt-install command line (using virt-manager GUI from a remote Ubuntu desktop would not let me select the ISO location). I can however use a remote virt-manager to connect to the guest and complete the windows install. Within windows 2008 I changed the IP address but cannot ping from outside world. The bridge network appears fine - I'm not sure what else to look at! Here is the interfaces file: The loopback network interface auto lo iface lo inet loopback The primary network interface auto eth0 iface eth0 inet manual # auto br0 iface br0 inet static address 60.234.64.50 netmask 255.255.255.248 network 60.234.0.0 broadcast 60.234.0.255 gateway 60.234.64.49 bridge_ports eth0 bridge_stp off bridge_fd 0 bridge_maxwait 0 auto eth1 iface eth1 inet static address 192.168.12.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.12.255 The ip of the windows server is 60.234.64.52 What else should I check?   The problem: the computers [Xbox 360 and a Kubuntu 12.04.1 laptop] can't access Internet through a recently-installed desktopless Debian 6 laptop (which is wirelessly connected to a WLAN station) but addresses are successfully given by dnsmasq. The Debian laptop was rebooted many times and between each attempt, with and without the script auto-executing via /etc/rc.local. While adding the iptables-restore command to that file I disabled the script.

• For large files compress first then transfer or rsync -z? which would be fastest?

  I have a ton of relativity small data files but they take up about 50 GB and I need them transferred to a different machine. I was trying to think of the most efficient way to do this. Thoughts I had were to gzip the whole thing then rsync it and decompress it, rely on rsync -z for compression, gzip then use rsync -z. I am not sure which would be most efficient since I am not sure how exactly rsync -z is implemented. Any ideas on which option would be the fastest?

  I use windows server 2008r2 with role Hyper-V. The guest system is Ubuntu 12.04 LTC. It is situated on the dynamic virtual hard disk. I want to compact this VHD (The real size is 50 GB, 360 GB on the disk). But I can not do this, because the Ubuntu file system is not NTFS. What do I need (gparted, sdelete, ...) for solving this problem? The main problem is that the filesystem is not NTFS, but ext4.

• Server not sending a SYN/ACK packet in response to a SYN packet

  Using iptraf, tcpdump and wireshark I can see a SYN packet coming in but only the ACK FLAG is set in reply packet. • Web Service gets unavailable after several concurrent calls

  We are testing GoDaddy Virtual Data Center and came to a very strange issue when our web site gets unavailable. GoDaddy Support keeps saying the issue is in our web server settings, but looking at the result of our tests I doubt it. TEST ENVIRONMENT Virtual DataCenter with Windows hosted at GoDaddy.com. All servers have Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter, IIS 7. Server One with IP address 10.1.0.4 Server Two with IP address 10.1.0.3 Both servers are in private network not visible from outside. Port Forward with IP address 50.62.13.174. Port Forward is assigned to Server One TEST DESCRIPTION JMeter is used as a Client App to simulate 30 concurrent users sending 100 SOAP requests each. Interval between requests is 1 second. Http link used for testing: http://50.62.13.174/v2/webservices.asmx TEST ONE Test is run from a computer in our office. After JMeter starts running test, almost immediately, the link above becomes unavailable in a browser. After test completion, the link is not available in a browser for about 5 more minutes. Remote Desktop is working well, so we can connect to Server One remotely. After about 5 minutes since test completion, the link becomes available in a browser again. TEST TWO Test is run from Server Two (that is part of our virtual data center). Test works very well, no visible delays in processing. The link is available in a browser all the time. TEST THREE Test is run from Server One using localhost. The result is the same as in TEST TWO - no issues. TEST FOUR We repeated TEST ONE from other computers that we have located in different countries, all with the same result as TEST ONE. CONCLUSION As the test works well from Server Two, but does not work from outside our virtual data center, we feel there are issues with the network or its capacity. The whole behaviour looks like out requests from outside get stuck somewhere before reaching our virtual data center. Has anybody had similar issues in the past? Are there chances that something is wrong with our server settings?

  Even with just my text editor open (no web browser) and maybe the terminal, the baseline temperature is usually above 40 C. When i open 4-5 browser tabs in Safari (even if none of Sites have Flash) the temp can quickly go over 50 C. (In addition, i am observing these temps even though i have turned the fan up to 3000 rpms). (i have install smcFanControl on my MBA so i can see the temp in the menu bar.) So this means my MBA is running much warmer than my MBP; and in practice, it means that i have to be very careful how i use my MBA. Of course if i load a Site with Flash, it just freaks out, and often quickly goes above 65 C (I've installed a flash blocker to avoid this). Is anyone else observing this behavior? I have checked the Apple boards and sure enough, there are a lot of complaints, but nothing from Apple.

  In general, and understanding the answer may vary by manufacturer and model (and driver, and...), in consumer-grade workstations with integrated NICs, does the NIC rely on the CPU for a lot of help (as is typically the case with a USB controller, for instance), or is it fairly intelligent and capable on its own (like, say, the typical Firewire controller)? Or is the question too general to answer? (If it matters, you can assume Linux.) Background: I'm looking at connecting a device (digital television capture) that will be delivering ~20-50 Mbit/sec of data to a somewhat under-powered workstation. I can get a USB 2 High-speed device, or a network-attached device, and am interested in avoiding impacting the CPU where possible. Obviously, if it's a 100Mbit NIC, that's roughly half its theoretical inbound bandwidth, whereas it's only roughly a tenth of the 480 Mbit/second the USB 2 "High Speed" interface. But if the latter requires a lot of CPU support and the former doesn't...

  To continue with this question: Should be Vmware vCenter server high available? According to the response there even if vCenter is down HA will continue to work. So, if my vCenter is a VM, using the express sql edition in the same VM, and that VM is hosted in the same cluster it manages (and the cluster is setup for HA): Am I correct to assume that if the host that hosts the vCenter goes down HA will vmotion the vCenter VM to another host and it will continue to function? BTW: my environment is small, two ESXi 5.0 hosts, with about 50 VMs, using iSCSI shared storaged for everything.

  Let's say I have 50 GiB of files that weights around 500 KiB each. My guess is that having, for example, 5 large files of 10 GiB each with the same content archived in them would be better for hard drive performance. Am I correct? Will there be a noticeable gain on an NTFS filesystem? ===================================================================== Finally, which tool could I use to group the files together while retaining the ability to modify the content of the archive with zero or minor performance loss? For example, I like TrueCrypt archiving because after mounting an archive file, it creates a drive which I can use seamlessly as if it was a normal drive. The only thing with TrueCrypt is that I don't need encryption/compression, only archiving.

Even when I have no applications open, simply closing and opening windows, lags. Or opening the start menu, or dragging icons across the desktop. sometimes even the cursor lags. So I checked out the resource monitor, and the resources using disk activity are svchost Avast ------- my antivirus, but not much System (PID 4) ------ This is using a huge chunk The total disk activity fluctuates between %50 - %100

The web interface works well but when I connect it to Outlook 2013 I get the following error: There are too many devices syncing with this account. To sync using Outlook, try removing another device that is connected with this account such as a phone or another computer. Error Code: 0x80004005 I've done my home work, using Google, and found that it is often due to having 3 or 4 devices connected to an account with 50+ folders. As you can guess it is set up for a dual boot. Today while looking up how to get the C# Facebook SDK for Metro apps I learned about the Release Preview being released. I was wondering: How do I go about getting rid of Windows 8 Consumer Preview and replacing it with the Release Preview? I know i can't just wipe it off my second partition because the dual boot uses Windows 8 to choose the operating system to boot.

  In postfix, I'm using relay_host to send an email to an external address using sendgrid, but I get an error about local ricipient table when sending an email from my PHP code. This is my main.cf in /postfix/ ## -- Sendgrid smtp_sasl_auth_enable = yes smtp_sasl_password_maps = static:username:password smtp_sasl_security_options = noanonymous smtp_tls_security_level = may header_size_limit = 4096000 relayhost = [smtp.sendgrid.net]:587 This is the error message from the log: postfix/smtpd[53598]: [ID 197553 mail.info] NOQUEUE: reject: RCPT from localhost[127.0.0.1]: 550 5.1.1 Recipient address rejected: User unknown in local recipient table; from=<[email protected]> to=<[email protected]> proto=ESMTP helo=<localhost.localdomain> One interesting thing is when I use "sendmail [email protected]" from the command line, the email is delivered successfully using SendGrid. I think it's because this uses postfix/smtp instead of postfix/smtpD the log for this says, postfix/smtp[18670]: [ID 197553 mail.info] AAF7313A7E: to=, relay=smtp.sendgrid.net[50.97.69.148]:587, delay=4.1, delays=3.5/0.02/0.44/0.18, dsn=2.0.0, status=sent (250 Delivery in progress) Thank you

• Intel cpu hyperthreading on or off for ibm db2?

  Has anyone ever done any database performance comparisons with hyper-threading enabled vs disabled? We are running ibm db2 and I'm curious if anyone has an recommendations for enabling hyper-threading or not. With hyper-threading enabled it makes it quite difficult to do capacity planning for cpu usage. For example. "With 8 physical cores represented as 16 "threads" on the OS and a cpu-bound workload, does that mean when your cpu usage hit's 50% you are actually running at 100%." What real benefits do I gain with leaving hyper-threading enabled on an intel server running DB2? Does hyper-threading help if you're workload is truly disk IO bound? If so, up to what percentage? These are the types of questions I'm trying to answer. Any thoughts?

• Semantic is consuming all CPU, causing emacs to hang

  I upgraded to emacs 23.2.1 on Windows 7, not long ago. Since then I've been unable to use Semantic. As soon as I start it, the cpu goes to MAX . (actually, Windows reports it at 50%, but this is a dual core machine, so emacs is effectively consuming 100% of a core). Emacs becomes non-responsive. Is there a particular combination of versions of semantic and emacs I that is unsafe to use together? how would I debug this spin/hang? I've seen other suggestions to change the semantic-idle-scheduler-idle-time, from its default 2 to something very large. I tried that, but got the same results.

  We are thinking about purchasing 4 x EqualLogic PS6510X SANs (the Sumo boxes). Each has 48 x 600GB 10k SAS drives. They will be stacked to form a logical pool of storage (all in the same location). I understand that when you create a RAID group its done on a "per box" basis. So one box could be Raid 50, another Raid 10 etc. My question is, should I make one box a "performance" box ie Raid 10, and the other boxes "standard" ie Raid50? How do people configure their EQL arrays in the real world?

• nagios wrongly reports packet loss

  Lately, on my nagios 3.2.3 install (CentOS5, monitoring ~ 300 hosts, 1150 services) has sdtarted to occasionally report high packet loss on 50-60 hosts at a time. Problem is it's bogus. Manual runs of ping (or its own check_ping binary) finds no fault with any of the affected hosts. The only possible cures I found so far are: run all the checks manually (they will succeed but it may act up again on next check) acknowledge and wait for the problem to go away (may take several ours) I suspect (but have no particular reason other than single rescheduled checks succeeding) that the problem may lay with all the checks being mass scheduled together - in which case introducing some jitter in the scheduling (how?) might help. Or it may be something completely different. Ideas, anyone?

• Yum Update fails due to conflicting perl packages

  Hi I have a CentOS 5.2 i386 Production box with Qmail, LAMP etc now since it showed me that it could upgrade to 5.3, i downloaded all the packages using yum update However, the update fails due to perl packages conflicting I believe that while installing Qmail, I had tried for Mailscanner and thus it upgraded the per itself I read somewhere that we can uninstall the conflicting rpms and then go for the upgrade But, I am about 50 % sure that if I go ahead and uninstall perl, my server will crash like a falling house of cards Also, perl is needed by variety of packages working including vpopmail etc Thus, I request anyone to please tell me if we have a safer solution to this IF there is no solution to this, then can somebody please teach me how to backup and restore Qmail as it is. I can handle the rest of the things I sincerely appreciate those who have read and even thought about my problem In anticipation of a solution Regards amRit
