• Windows 7: Search indexing is stuck

  When I open Indexing Options, it says: 4,317 items indexed Indexing in progress. Search results might not be complete during this time. It's stuck at 4,317 though; no more items have been indexed. Worst of all, SearchIndexer.exe is taking up 100% CPU (well, 50%, but I have a dual core CPU; it's taking up all processing power it can). It is not causing hard drive activity though. I tried clicking "Troubleshoot search and indexing" at the bottom of the Indexing Options window, but it couldn't find any problem. I've also tried the repair registry key that several websites suggest; I change HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Search SetupCompletedSuccessfully to 0 and restarted the computer, and it apparently repaired because it flipped back to 1, but the same problem continues to occur. It's reducing the battery life of my laptop and making it really hot so that my fans are running all the time. I've had to disable the Windows Search service. How can I fix this? Do I need to just flat-out reformat my computer? Update: I've tried rebuilding a couple times. There's nothing unusual about the locations I have to index, and I don't have any downloads in progress or anything like that. I don't see any reason why it stopped, and I noticed it much too late to do a system restore. At this point, I'm hoping someone will offer up some secret answer that will fix the problem, thus the bounty. Another update: I tried starting the service again, just to let it try yet again. It seemed okay at first (Indexing Options showed it operating at reduced speed due to user activity, and the number of files was going up). A while later I checked, and the service had stopped. • MacBook Pro screen goes dark

  I've had my MacBook Pro for two years now; no problems so far (it has had 3rd party RAM from the get go). Today, I'm copying a particularly large VM from an External disk drive to local MacBook disk. It has about 3GB to go and I take off to do some other things and when I come back my screen is "dark". The computer is still on but I can't see anything. I forced a reboot by holding down the power button, it starts up with the "chimes", but still no screen. I've done this several times. Any ideas? Do you think the hard disk activity caused it to get too hot?

• CentOS 5.5 x86_64 VPS - A lot of inbound traffic when idle?

  I have a CentOS VPS from UKWSD and I'm getting inbound traffic that I cannot understand. The VPS was setup yesterday and I installed vnstat this morning around 10am, since then the server was basically idle and doing nothing from 12pm but it's showing activity inbound which is way over what it should be and i'd say the outbound is pretty much over to top too. I'm struggling to understand this and I thought I'd get some advice before asking my ISP (and risk looking completely stupid) Regards Matt

  I have just started GTK+ coding in C. I was curious whether i can get syntax highlight and auto-completion working for my GTK code... because as a beginner it would be helpful. I was completely convinced that it was not possible until i came across this video on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyeQrO1VDFM&feature=plcp I asked the uploader for help, but turns out his last activity on youtube was in Septembeer :( I also tried opening the gtk.h file with geany as i had read somewhere that it worked, but unfortunately it didn't work too. • Nvidia Optimus shows Nvidia card is always active in Windows 8

  I have loaded the new Asus Nvidia driver for my Asus Ux32VD that I have installed Windows 8 on. It has an Nvidia 620m and Intel hd 4000 integrated graphics. The problem is that the Optimus activity icon in my system tray shows that the Nvidia card is always active, though it shows that it is not doing anything. I can force the system to prefer the Intel graphics, and after rebooting, the Nvidia card will shut off, but then all the programs will be overridden and use the Intel graphics. Is anyone else having problems with Optimus in Windows 8? My battery life is really suffering because I'm always idling my Nvidia card while also presumably running the Intel card. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

• Kill Leaking Connections on SQL Server 2005

  We have a legacy ASP application that somewhere leaks SQL Connections. In Activity Monitor, I can see a bunch of idle processes with Last Batch times over an hour old. When I look at the T-SQL command batch, these are always FETCH API_CURSORXXX, which from my understanding is caused by improperly closed ASP ADO Recordsets. While we are try to pinpoint the offeding code, is there a way for me to monitor which requests open which cursors? I'm assuming profiler, but I'm not sure what I should be monitoring exactly. I can see a bunch of calls to sp_cursoropen but I don't see the API_CUSORXXX name anywhere. Second, would anyone be able to suggest a script we could run to kill these processes based on the Last Batch time 10 minutes and Last Batch Command being FETCH API_CURSORXXX? For various reasons, we unfortunately don't have any SQL Server DBAs.

• Please recommend tools for PC, browser, home network performance problems?

  My client is experiencing some odd response behavior in their browser for the past few days. Classic, "nothing has changed" so I am starting at ground zero. Browsing a website will timeout or take a ridiculous time to load -- other times, the same site and query is immediately responsive. Once a connection is established, video streams are uninterrupted. The home network hosts a website, but it is not experiencing any activity in Apache's 'access.log' I am using speedtest.net to check if the ISP through the internet is 'OK' -- which looks typical (average +/-). I have to suspect the home network is beaconing or something very abnormal, but I don't know where to start.

• Script for checking the nologin accounts and then disable the account

  "Could you please share the scripts which does the below ?" I have written a script that scans all the relevent logs daily, makes a list of people that have had any activity that day, and maintains database (just a text file) of users and the last time they logged in. Then I have a second script that examines the database for dates more than x days ago, an notifies the user and administrator 2 weeks prior to locking the account. And if there are any dates more than x+y days ago, deletes the account altogether. This seems to be working for me - but I would like to use a non-proprietary solution if one is available. We need it similar to Elance WorkView or oDesk "Team Room", what these tools do is: Take screenshots at random interval. Track the activity on computer based on key strokes. (not a necessity) It doesn't necessarily need to track time but will be good to have, our aim is to monitor employees and make sure they're working - that's all. • Does private browsing prevent socket events?

  I usually do my work in Google Chrome (v36.0.1985.143), private browsing enabled. I use Firefox to browse Stack Exchange, in normal mode so that all my logins are persisted. Sometimes I accidentally open an SE question in Chrome, so I copy-paste the URL to Firefox and get on reading. I left the SE tab in Chrome open, and up-voted a question in Firefox. Normally, you immediately see other users' voting activity via socket event emitting (possibly Socket.IO, I don't know SE's back-end). I noticed that in my Chrome tab, I didn't see the upvote that I had cast in Firefox. I had to refresh to be able to see the vote count change. So, as the title of the question states: does private browsing prevent socket events?

• Troubleshoot odd large transaction log backups...

  I have a SQL Server 2005 SP2 system with a single database that is 42gigs in size. It is a modestly active database that sees on average 25 transactions per second. The database is configured in Full recovery model and we perform transaction log backups every hour. However it seems to be pretty random at some point during the day the log backup will go from it's average size of 15megs all the way up to 40gigs. There are only 4 jobs that are scheduled to run on the SQL server and they are all typical backup jobs which occur on a daily/weekly basis. I'm not entirely sure of what client activity takes place as the application servers are maintained by a different department. Is there any good way to track down the cause of these log file growths and pinpoint them to a particular application, or client? Thanks in advance.

• rkhunter warns of inode change by no file modification date changes

  I have several systems running Centos 6 with rkhunter installed. I have a daily cron running rkhunter and reporting back via email. My question: is there some other activity on the machine that could make the inode change (running ext4) or is this really yum making regular (~ once a week) changes to these files as part of normal security updates?

  I have a SQL Server 2005 database... a copy of it is running in development on a full version of SQL server. Another copy is running in SQL Server 2005 Express on a web server. I've used SQL Profiler and saved a Tuning trace log from activity on the SQL Express copy of the database. I want to use the saved trace log in the Database Engine Tuning Advisor... If I try when connecting the Advisor to the Express database, I am told that Express is not supported. If I try when connecting the Advisor to the SQL Server database, I get empty results. Is there any way to do this?

• OS X clients ignoring Windows print server permissions

  I'm in the process of testing a Windows Server 2008 R2 print server for a mixed OS X/Windows environment. Any security permissions (AD groups) I set for the printers on the print server are not honoured by the OS X clients. Only if I remove absolutely all permissions for a given printer will an OS X client not print to that printer. The Windows clients honour the permissions as expected. The PrintService log doesn't record any activity when an unprivileged Windows client attempts to print, and records a typical print job when an unprivileged OS X client attempts to print. Has anyone encountered this problem before and have a fix? With 600-700 clients, a number of which are dual-booting, restricting by IP address is not viable. EDIT: The jobs are definitely going through the print server, they show up in the logs with their AD credentials.

  Arch Linux shows a blinking cursor instead of a booting installer. I ran sudo dd if=archlinux-2010.05-core-i686.iso of=/dev/sdb1 and checked the MD5 sums. I tried to boot it on two different PCs and got the same result: instead of booting GRUB — or anything useful, for that matter — it just showed a blinking cursor at the top left corner of the screen. The machines became unresponsive to any kind of input, the flash drive LED didn't seem to blink or shiver at all and there seemed to be no other activity whatsoever. I tried using another flash drive, but the machine completely ignored it, booting Windows "normally."

  My customer have an office small office with just a wifi router. He use this router for internet connectivity and file transfer operations between the desktops. Recently the file transfer activity between desktop (all osx based) is increased a lot so he bought a switch (no connected to the router, too far away) for transfer the file over the cable instead over the wifi. Problem: How to bind the file sharing service just to the Ethernet interface and exclude the wifi interface ? (actually the service binds to the wifi automatically and there are no options about the interface binding)

• One NIC going to sleep on Centos system

  I have two Dell boxes with two ethernet ports a piece. I have a cable directly connecting two of these ports, creating a tiny LAN with 10.3.3.x addresses. The other port on each box is hooked up to a switch and has a DHCP-supplied address to talk to the outside world. I've noticed that when scp'ing large files from one box to the other over the private LAN, the transfers sometimes stall. It appears that any other network activity on either box will cause the transfer to resume. Wake-on-LAN is disabled on all interfaces according to ethtool. What else could be causing these stalled transfers?

  I have set up Microsoft Family Safety in Windows 8 for my daughter's account. At first I got meaningful reports via e-mail each week. But then the e-mails started reporting no activity, even though my daughter still uses the computer. The e-mails are still sent to me, but indicate that she is not using the computer at all. Family Safety is definitely still active on the computer. It limits how long she can use the computer. So only the e-mail reports are buggy. I don't know how to troubleshoot this since the e-mails are generated by Microsoft. Any ideas?

I'm familiar with powertop, and it appears this works to an extent, in so much that it show the user files that were written to. Is there any other utilities that support this feature. Some of my findings: powertop: best for write access logging, but more focused on CPU activity iotop: shows real time disk access by process, but not file name lsof: shows the open files per process, but not real time file access iostat: shows the real time I/O performance of disk/arrays but does not indicate file or process

• How do you debug why Windows is slow?

  I've got Vista Biz and when my machine chugs I think it is because of paging, but I never know how to verify this. Procexp doesn't seem to provide useful information because it appears that nothing is going on when the chugs happen. perfmon seems like it has the counters I need, but I'm never sure what counters I should add to cover the information I want. For perfmon, I prefer numbers that are percents, so I can gauge load. Here are the counters I have up, but they don't always seem to correlate to chugs: - % disk time (logical) - page faults/sec (an indicator of lots of paging activity) - processor/%priviliged time

• Weblogic Threads Usage

  I have an application deployed on WebLogic 10.3, which exhibits a strange behavior. I am running a constant (not too high) load on my application (20 concurrent users, running a light activity). The response time is reasonable (well below 100ms after the application stabilizes) Memory consumption seems fine (My application creates a lot of short-living objects, but they are garbaged collected so the overall memory consumption stays under 500 mb). Threads stats seem healthy as well: And yet, after I leave my test running for a while, more and more execute threads ("[ACTIVE] ExecuteThread: '3' for queue: 'weblogic.kernel.Default (self-tuning)'") are created, until eventually the application crashes: This test hasn't been running for a long time (All the new threads that you don't see in the first screenshot were created while I was writing this question), and I've seen much more threads being created. Any idea why these threads are being created?

• How do anti-viruses work?

  So I was thinking about viruses recently, and wondering how exactly antiviruses keep up? Considering anybody who'd been coding for a few weeks could hack together something do do nasty, nasty things to somebody's PC, the quantity alone would make a simple list of hashes prohibitive, so how do antiviruses do it? Do they monitor process activity and have a 3 strikes rule for doing virus-like things? And if so, what's stopping it from triggering on perfectly harmless things (like me moving files around in \system32)? I did a bit of googling, but the regular places didn't particularly help, and I couldn't find a dupe here, so I thought it'd be good to ask :)
