• PHP - Data Access Layer

  I am currently reviewing a code base and noticed that a majority of the calls (along with DB connections) are just buried inside the PHP scripts. I would have assumed that like other languages they would have developed some sort of data access layer (Like I would do in .Net or Java) for all of the communication to the DB (or implemented MVC, etc). Is this still a common pattern in PHP or is there alternative methodologies/patterns for this technology? I am just trying to understand why the subs would have developed it this way. Any insight/info on how experienced developers design an approach data access in PHP would be very much appreciated.

• No Sound via HDMI

  I have ubuntu installed on a Acer aspire revo 3700 intel atom processor with nvidia ion graphics this is plugged into a celcus 32 inch TV via HDMI (1080p). The video driver shows as an nvidia which I can select. I have set the sound to play via HDMI and the output to HDMI but get no sound. I have tried a sony 1080i TV with the box but get eratic results with the graphics, but the sound picks up straight away that is there is no need to select it. The graphics on the celcus TV work but I get a dialog box showing loads of different resolutions and frequencies which I have to close manually, these appear to be attempts to set different resolutions for the TV. Am I missing some sort of screen/sound driver, if so does anyone know what might support the celcus 32 inch (1080p) tv?

• Looking to create a website ... need assistance on what technologies to use!

  First off, My group and I don't have any experience with databases or anything of that sort, only programming (not web-programming), so this post is just me wondering what things I should start researching and possibly some referral to a hosting company. The abstract idea is to have a list of things, each categorized, and each item with user-submitted reviews (made by users who are signed up with the website). Would absolutely everything be stored on a SQL database? (the long text reviews for example) Does anyone have any suggestions on some 'web frameworks' we could use to jumpstart us? What should our absolute first step be? (I was thinking about first designing the basic database? so we have something to work around...?)   I've found plenty of questions between here and StackExchange of people asking for the 'best' data grid / data table, or one that has a particular feature, and plenty of lists out there (of various ages) listing the various data grid implementations ... but is anyone aware of any matrix of what features the various solutions implement? (eg, allow shift-click to select multiple; support checkboxes for selection; can update a regular table in-place; allow editing of cells; support websql or indexeddb for local caching; which browsers they support; infinite scroll; etc.) There's a generic 'javascript framework' comparison on wikipedia, which would be the sort of thing I'm looking for, but it doesn't go into detail on data grids. (which makes sense, as so many are extensions, not core features of those frameworks, and in the case of jQuery, there's lots of 'em.)

  So I'm trying to create a bash script that looks for two words in my syslog file. Then I want the script to print out how many times those two words have appeared. Also I want it to print it out for every hour of the day. So like if the word dog appeared 4 times during the first hour of today, it says Hour one, dog 4. Finally at the end of the script I want it to print out how many times those words appeared all day.   Let's say you have a resource that you can do normal PUT/POST/GET operations on. It represents a BLOB of data and the methods retrieve representations of the data, be they metadata about the BLOB or the BLOB itself. The resource is something that can be processed by the server on request. In this instance a file that can be parsed multiple times. How do I initiate that processing? It's a bit RPC like. I have a problem with my video card, I have a video card GeForce GTS 450 and a TV Samsung Series 4 43 "and I have it connected to my video card via a cable Mini HDMI to the TV and everything works perfectly, I can instarlar Ubuntu 12.04 (64bits) perfectly, but the problem when I want to change the screen resolution but try to change the driver I install that comes directly from the Nvidia page gave me an error at the end. maximum resolution I presents is 1024x 768 and is supposed to introduce more resolutions and that is connected to the HDMI. • What program to use to create subtitles for a video?

  I have a video that I want to create subtitles for. Is there a program that can perform rudimentary speech-to-text in order to set the correct start/stop of each individual subtitle create rudimentary text subtitles (using some sort of speech-to-text) I know about gnome-subtitles. However, it requires extensive effort to create those subtitles manually. You need to select yourself the start and stop for each sentence. Youtube has the above features (creates rudimentary text subtitles at the correct timings, using speech-to-text). However I would rather not upload the videos to Youtube just to get my subtitles. Is it possible to do the subtitles efficiently in Ubuntu? Update: I plan to use the .srt subtitles only, and do not need to hard code them on the videos. My biggest requirement is to have the program automatically find the start/stop for each sentence, so that I write the text in it.

• Protecting the integrity of a game state while minimizing amount of data sent

  I'm developing a game in PHP/jQuery, and naturally have to be wary of any sort of data coming from the client. At present, I have tables of data representing the map (2D roguelike), monsters, items, and player(s). Initially, my thought was to simply package it all in a JSON object and send it every game tick, however when actually looking at the data I realized that's quite a large packet to be sending. So, my question is what is a good approach for minimizing data sent to the client? Obviously I would need to figure out some way of validating whatever it sends back. Initially we'd hoped to do some minimal verification on the client-side, but each time we thought of one thing we could do it is immediately invalidated with tools like Firebug. Kind of an open question I realize, but we want to get this right before we move on with our implementation so we don't have to shoehorn in bugfixes later on.

• Can I use Unity with XMonad?

  I've been using Fedora for a while, but I recently decided to upgrade my ubuntu installation from 12.04 to 12.10. While I was using Fedora, I found xmonad tiling window manager which I sort of got working with xfce. I really like xmonad and I now automatically use the keyboard shortcuts without even thinking. So I would like to use xmonad with unity. Now, I have seen several blog posts etc. that explain how to setup the whole thing in 12.04, with Unity2D. But now, Unity2D has been removed, and the old methods no longer apply. I have read that Unity is actually just a Compiz plugin, and that the wm can't be replaced. Does no version of Unity have a replaceable WM? I've also tried MATE (GNOME2 fork) with xmonad on 12.10 and that is totally broken for me, but that's for another question.

I'm looking for a store to buy a suitable adaptor in locally and I can't find that particular adaptor - but I can see a Belkin F7D4101az. I think this is simply a newer model - but a Google search for "ubuntu belkin f7d4101az" brings no results - not even people trying to get it to work. Nothing. So I didn't want to purchase it without being sure.   I am looking for theoretical resources (books, tutorials, etc.) to learn about making sound statistical inferences given (plenty of) multivariate website conversion data. I'm after the math involved, and cannot find any good non-marketing stuff on the web. The sort of questions I want to answer: how much impact does a single variable (e.g. color of text) have? what is the correlation between variables? what type of distribution is used for modelling (Gaussian, Binomial, etc.)? When using statistics to analyze results - what should be considered as a random variable - the web-page element that gets different variations or the binary conversion-or-no-conversion outcome of an impression? There's plenty of information about different website optimization testing methods and their benefits\pitfalls, plenty of information about multivariate statistics in general, do you guys know of resources that discuss statistics in this specific context of website optimization ?   I work for a gym. I am the programmer, its just me, nobody else! Gets really frustrating when there's nobody to bounce conceptual ideas off of. I'm getting rid of our archaic paper binder systems for tracking appointments and what not. I've made a lot of things successfully already, now I'm trying to tackle the personal training department. What I want: Trainer information and work schedule Appointment booking that can be done by time slot with all available trainers for that time, or by trainer with all available hours for that trainer What I've tried so far: I started with an 'appointments' database, a 'trainers' database, and a 'schedules' database. This became so complicated trying to fit the schedule in that I scrapped it. Does anyone know know the best way to structure the tables for this and how to sort of make them communicate correctly? I don't need specific code, I just need help understand how to make this thing!

Since coordinates are integers, I can't add less than 1 to slow the sprite down. I'm assuming I must have to implement a timer of some sort or something. Any advice?

Basically the left end of the image is sort of a continuation of the right end. You won't be able to see any cuts. I'm trying to create a clouds texture to add to my planet such that it will seem it has clouds. I managed to create the clouds in GIMP, however, I can't figure out how to make sure the left end of my image is a smooth continuation of the right end. For example if you were to map the below image to your sphere (I removed transparency to make it clearer), there would be a very obvious transition from the right end of the image back to the left end on your sphere. How would I create a texture such that I get rid of that? Sorry for my lack of terminology.

• When should I clear an auxilliary render target?

  I'm using a few different render targets in my game in addition to the back buffer. These other render targets are only used in a few places, for specific tasks. I'm wondering when I should be clearing them. Right now I clear all of my render targets at the beginning of the frame, and it seems like I'm waiting for all the textures to clear before the rest of the drawing gets underway. Would it be more efficient to clear these textures later in the frame, when they aren't being used? Is there any hope of the GPU sort of clearing them "on the side" while unrelated rendering is happening? Or are these tasks always sequential and will I always need to wait for clearing?
