• scp vs netatalk, samba, and/or vsftpd with External USB drive

  I set up a ubuntu server machine to share an ext2 formatted external usb drive. When attempting to copy a single 275MB files from said device through netatalk, I get estimated download rates at around 45 min. With samba and ftp (using vsftpd) I get 1+ hours! Using scp to copy the file results in complete download within 5 minutes. Another option, ssh+cp from external device to ~ and then using netatalk to grab it from there results in a total time of arounf 7 minutes. Does anyone have a clue what is misconfigured? Assuming that nothing is, is there any fs/pseudo-fs that would use the internal hdd as an intermediate location/onion-layer for the external hdd (for reads only)? • Linux + IPTables + NAT = some http hosts unreachable.

  Hi. I've set up dead simple NAT: iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 192.168.1.0/24 -o ppp0 -j MASQUERADE Everything works almost ok. Almost. The problem I've expirienced is some hosts are not reachable by NAT clients, i.e. there's http://code.jquery.com/jquery-1.4.2.min.js - I can download it from server, but in case of NAT client download stalls on connection stage. I thought its FFs fault, but wget has the same issue. I didn't find any logs/messages that can shed some light on this situtation. Any ideas what's going on? Maybe some tricky thing in sysclt is causing this? P.S. 3/3 client boxes are expiriencing this issue. This is definitely server trouble.

• AVG Installer Error

  my computer is running window XP home editon. the avg i am using is expirying soon and so a pop out ask me to install AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 2011. When the download is about to complete, i was ask to reboot the computer, i click "OK". after my computer restart , there was a pop out say "AVG Installer- Error A system restart is required in order to continue with the installation. Please restart your system and try again." Since the only option was "OK" i click it, and restart my computer. After restarting, the same pop-out appear. I could not download AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 2011 as the pop-out keep appearing if i run it or uninstall. can anyone help me?? btw my brower is int

• Slow Internet connection

  My internet connectivity from my Laptop slowed down overnight. I have no clue as what had happened. I was able to download at 300kbps the day before yesterday. And from yesterday on, my internet has been slow. My download speed is at 25kbps. Can someone help me to resolve this issue? I am using wireless connection on my Sony Vaio.   In my network, I've some Ubuntu machines which need to download files from nl.archive.ubuntu.com. Since it's quite a waste of time to download everything multiple times, I've setup a squid proxy for caching the data. Another use for this proxy was rewriting requests for archive.ubuntu.com or *.archive.ubuntu.com to nl.archive.ubuntu.com because this mirror is faster than the US mirrors. This has worked quite well, but after a recent install of my caching machine, the configuration was lost. I remember having a separate perl program for handling this rewrite. How do I setup such a squid proxy which rewrites the host *.example.com to www.example.com and cache the result of the latter?

• What hash should be used to ensure file integrity?

  It's no secret that large files offered up for download often are coupled with their MD5 or SHA-1 hash so that after you download you can verify the file's integrity. Are these still the best algorithms to use for this? Obviously these are very popular hashes that potential downloaders would have easy access to. Ignoring that factor, what hashes have the best properties for being used for this? For example, bcrypt would be horrible for this. It's designed to be slow. That would suck to use on your 7.4 GB dual layer OS ISO you just downloaded when a 12 letter password might take up to a second with the right parameters.

• Automatic driver search & update on Windows?

  I have a Dell laptop issued by my employer, and I always find it a real pain to search for, download and maintain their drivers. It baffles me that there does not seem to be a nice way (product, website, ...) to just download the stuff you need, without hassle. The same goes for the other Windows based laptops in my direct environment. Are there any (preferably free) automated solutions available? Or do you have a nice workflow - other than searching the manufacturers website - to help smoothing this process?

  the TCP/IP stack is smashed, thats why no LAN-Connections are running. I want to download the LAN drivers from another computer and uninstall and reinstall the LAN devices on this system. Hopefully that should recreate the stack. But what to download? What uninstall? How to install? Windows Vista is protected against such changes, so how to achieve that job? please help. Update per 2011-03-11: I found all the tipps and hints about "TCP/IP Repair, LSP Fix, and WinSock Fix" according to windows vista but nothing helped to bring back network access. • Is there a faster way to deploy an OVA template?

  I need to deploy vSphere Server Appliance 5.1. I have vSphere Client running locally and my internet upload is capped at 3 Mbps. It says it's going to take about 200 minutes to upload. When selecting a URL as opposed to a local file, does vSphere Client download it locally and then upload, or does it download the OVA directly to the server? My goal is to avoid waiting 3 1/2 hours for this to upload. If specifying a URL isn't any faster, are there any other methods that would allow me to deploy from the datacenter instead of my office? We don't have any Windows VM's installed on our cluster. So unfortunately I don't have a Windows machine with faster upload speed.

At 90% download I do the initial rsync to save time later: $ rsync -Ph DVD.iso /some/target/ sending incremental file list DVD.iso 2.60G 100% 40.23MB/s 0:01:01 (xfer#1, to-check=0/1) sent 2.60G bytes received 73 bytes 34.59M bytes/sec total size is 2.60G speedup is 1.00 Then, when the file's fully downloaded, I rsync again: total size is 2.60G speedup is 1.00 Speedup=1 says delta-transfer was not used, although 90% of the file has not changed. Why?!

• Extracting streaming video from swf

  I am trying to speed up this video by 1.25x to 1.5x, udacity style. I tried grabbing the http://smart.if.uidaho.edu/courses/f2012/cs512/ using the Download Flash & Video Firefox plugin, but it only grabbed the swf player that streams the video. Is there any other way to download this video? (as well as future videos). As a final solution, I can use video capture software while I'm not using the computer, but I don't want that hassle and time delay if possible.

• Best Practices in Preventing Locks in File sharing in Windows?

  We have a web development server, that has our source control on it. That we use via mapped drives to open/edit/save/create files on to it. But I have noticed a lot of weird glitches with either the file lock/sharing/etc For example, if i have a file open on my local pc, and try to check out that file via my source control on dev, it error's out. The source control I use is QCVS by Qumasoft. Or If I use cuteftp to download something to dev, via my local pc, it won't download unless I close that file. So my brain sniff's and figures this is either an issue with folder/network/sharing, or an issue of permissions. Has anyone else had similar issues, and what did they do to fix it permanently? • Toshiba satellite u400 hardware buttons, which software?

  I've recently intalled Windows 7 64bit onto my Toshiba U400 laptop. I went over to toshiba support-download-drivers page and downloaded every driver that was missing. I chose not to download bloated stuff, only the drivers. Win7 has much better control over hardware buttons out of the box then I had before. But there is one thing that annoys me. I have hardware button on the laptom that is supposed to switch LEDs on/off. Windows 7 turns my sound on/off instead. The second minor thing is, when I turn off sound by pressing Fn+Esc (or light off button;-), the sound is off, however any slight touch with volume wheel turns it right back on! This is something that Ubuntu does also out of the box. I wonder what's the logic behind this. Any lightweight solutions to these out there? Thank you

• Make the Windows 8 Mail app sync and notify Gmail labels

  My Windows 8 Mail app is connected with Gmail, and is set to sync emails and download emails on arrival. Most of my mail isn't going to the inbox, but is going straight to different labels. Say, all work related mail is going straight to the label Work. The problem is that when I have unread email in Work, the Mail app will not tell me. It will only display a label, Work, I can click on, not Work (1) indicating unread mails. When clicking the label, I will need to wait for some time for it to actually download and sync the mail before anything shows. Even if I tried force syncing just before. So: The Mail app is not syncing my labels, and will not give any visuals that a label contains unread mail. Is there any way to achieve this? Without it, the Mail app is unfortunately pretty useless to me.

• WSUS Showing Incorrect Version & Client Update Failure but they can check-in

  One of the issues we are having is the clients will not download the updates from our WSUS server. They check-in as they are suppose too and find applicable updates but they are unable to actually download and install them. The GPO is set correctly. We decided to install the patch KB2720211to see if it would help eleviate this issue but it did not. In fact, even stranger, if I check the version that is installed on WSUS it reads 3.2.7600.226 but as far as I know it should read 3.2.7600.251. If I check Add/Remove programs to see what Windows Updates have been installed it even lists for WSUS that KB2720211 has been installed at version 3.2.7600.251. To install this update I followed the following directions Question: Has anyone seen this issue where the patch is installed yet not showing the correct version? What can I try to get my clients to update?

• How can I ensure my Samsung Series 7 is actually using the Radeon switchable graphics?

  I have a Samsung Series 7 with the Radeon 6750M switchable graphics. The ATI software lets you force programs to use the dedicated card. However, I'm not convinced it is actually ever using it, as the frame rates on some non-taxing games (Portal, TF2) are merely OK. To make matters worse, it looks like the ATI Catalyst Control has vanished from my laptop. To make it even worse, you can't download the driver and ATI CCC from ATI's site, you need to download it from Samsung, and the ZIP they provide is corrupted. How can I ensure my Samsung Series 7 is actually using the Radeon switchable graphics?

• Upgrading from 32 to 64 Bit Windows 7, without losing program installations/games

  I recently built a new computer and put the wrong installation of Windows on (32 bit), meaning I cannot use all of my RAM. I would like to upgrade to the 64 bit version, though I already have downloaded many programs and games which would total to around 30 GB give or take. I don't have the kind of data usage with my ISP to re-download this much data again, until next month (total GB will be higher as time goes on). I know there is Windows Easy Transfer, but it is not so much my data itself I'm worried about, it is more having to re-download and install a bunch of games and applications. Is it possible to perform an upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit without this loss?

• Simple secured SFTP tunnel?

  I'd like to setup an sftp tunnel so that I can connect to an IP-secured SFTP server through a gateway computer from anywhere, and download the files to anywhere. I was thinking of using a combination with netcat, having it listen to either WinSCP or PuTTY sFTP (doesn't matter which). Not sure how I would download the files to the connecting computer though. I would like the tunnel to be secured, preferably, with a username/password. I'm open to using alternative software but I'm looking for unintrusive, simple command line stuff because I don't want to install a lot on this computer. Thanks

  On a Debian-based system, including Ubuntu, how can one tell which repository a package will be downloaded from, without actually beginning the download? aptitude show and apt-cache info will show the section (e.g., metapackage, base, graphics), but not the repository to which a package belongs (e.g., http://ppa.launchpad.net/mactel-support/ppa/ubuntu or http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/). When installing the package, the actual repository appears during the download (it is printed out in the "downloading from ..." output from apt and similar programs), but how can one obtain information on the repository containing the package (or a specific version of a package) without downloading and installing it first? Additionally, how can one determine the source repository for a package that is already installed?

• How to choose my own filename format for subscribed podcast files?

  I subscribe to several podcasts where the filenames of the downloaded mp3 files have no particular pattern to them. When I copy the directory of accumulated mp3 files into my mp3 player, the files play in alphabetical order. What I really want is to play the files chronologically by release date. I currently use iTunes on Windows XP to download the files. What I do now is manually rename the files, adding the date in YYYYMMDD format to the start of each filename so that an alphabetical listing of files will correspond to their chronological order when I listen to them later in PocketTunes on my Palm Centro. Is there some way to get the release date into the filename automatically? If so, I could automate or possibly skip the file renaming step. I would switch from iTunes to something else if that would solve my problem. The file creation time on my local disk isn't a reliable indicator because sometimes I download a few days worth of content at one time, and the files don't necessarily get downloaded in chronological order.
