  I'm stuck with a crappy digital signage platform that only renders .html and .swf files (and rss feeds) No customization of rss, only way to show something dynamic in a pretty way is to use flash. The question: is there any way to embed javascript in swf files or somehow have facebook and twitter flash plugins? I looked for ready-made swf widgets for the job but didn't find any, if there is any flash widget that serves a facebook and/or twitter feed please give me a link. (sorry if the question is out of context but these things usually run a stripped-down browser to display everything so its pretty much a web page run from a file and not a web server)

• Transfer ownership of abandoned Google Analytics account

  The web team of a new client was fully responsible for the client's Google Analytics account, meaning the client didn't keep records of the account. Now that that web team has gone under we are trying to retrieve the account. Is it possible to request an account to be transferred to another owner, or alternatively have a full-privileged user added to the account? What steps should I take to resolve this issue with Google?

• Not using nofollow for UGC links

  My site contains many links that were user generated so I've added a rel=nofollow to them. I'm considering removing that tag at least partially, as these are most of my outgoing links and I've come to understand it isn't a good SEO sign to not have outgoing followed links. Although these are external sites, I have some data on the popularity and categorization of these sites. I'm trying to decide between two options: Removing the nofollow link for popular sites in most categories. Removing the nofollow for links that are in specific categories that represent the categorization I would like to achieve for my site. For example if this is a site about Basketball only remove the nofollow for links that are from sport sites. As these are both not exactly natural approaches, can this hurt me? Which option would you recommend?

• Cannot logon to POP server on my VPS or recieve emails

  I recently purchased an unmanaged VPS to host my business websites, however I am struggling to get the email accounts working as I have only ever had experience with shared hosting. The VPS is running CentOS and I have Webmin/Virtualmin installed. I have added my domain, which is lyke.org.uk, and that is working OK. However, when I've added a user and tried to access their email account using Apple Mail, I've been able to establish a SMTP connection but I've not been able to login using POP. Furthermore, I've set up squirrelmail and I can send an email to any email address from there but I haven't recieved any that I have sent to that email address from other accounts. I would very much appreciate any help or suggestions as I am completely new to VPS and web hosting without Plesk or cPanel.

• How to pay for servers without ads ?

  Hi everyone ! I have a website whose goal is to provide a free educational service (like wikipedia does, not on the same scale obviously). I wonder how I will continue to pay for the servers when I reach high traffic. I don't want to use any ads or sponsor things, because this is not the goal of the website (just like wikipedia once again). Does "please donate" works ? • n00b needs some PHP syntax guidance [closed]

  If you look at http://www.cruc.es/?paged=12/ and go to the bottom of the page you'll see the bottom navigation with the next and previous options. I've been able to make the page numbers work by changing page to paged= in the code. I don't know enough about PHP to get the previous/next options to work. Any advice would be appreciated and I've pasted the code below. • Grid Favicon on [Scammy] Websites [closed]

  I've seen this grid favicon show up on a lot of sites, most of which tend to be for scams like oxytocin accelerator, or make $300 a day posting links to Google type sites. My question is: what is this icon and where does it come from? Is there some organization whose goal is to make terrible websites like this and they associate them with this icon or does it belong to some server software that for some reason scammy sites like to use? Does anybody know the origins of this icon?

Music/ Movies/ Software and games. I believe most of them hosted somewhere on file-sharing websites, but there are attachments in the forum. How to report this? and to whom? • How to get rid of spam that sends from clients own email address?

  I've Googled everywhere for a solution for this, but though the same issue appears to be happening to a lot of people, I havent found anything that helped. Several of my clients are receiving loads of spam emails with the senders email being their own. The emails subject line is: Environmental corporation searching for representatives worldwide. The emails are not being sent from any scripts in the sites and all the code appears clean. I have also updated the sites CMS. Would anyone know how to get round this issue? Any help is appreciated!

  I’m creating an MMA website. There’s the home page, there’s a fighters section whose index page lists fighters in the organisation, and then each fighter has a profile page. The URL structure is like this: / /fighters/ /fighters/john-doe My question is: on the fighter’s profile page I want to link to the fighters index page (/fighters). In my HTML page, which meta tag would be the most appropriate? <link href="/fighters/" rel="index" /> Or: <link href="/fighters/" rel="contents" /> I’m having trouble distinguishing which would be best, and whether rel="index" would be the index for the whole site or the current page/section I’m viewing?

• Tor and Google Analytics - how to track?

  I make a lot of use of Google Analytics - Google has reasonable tracking for location of users so I can tell where users come from. I know it is not 100% but it gives an idea. In the wake of Prism it is possible that more people will make use of networks such as tor for anonymous browsing. I have no problem with this, people can wear tin foil hats while browsing my site for all I care, but it will lead to more erroneous stats. Is there any way to flag traffic as coming from TOR, so I can filter location reports not to include it, and to get an idea of the percentage of traffic which does use it? Has anyone actually tried this?

• What to choose for a multilingual site with support for Markdown and commenting

  I want to publish articles at a multilingual site. I want to be able to write an article in two languages and have them available on separate URLs: thesite.foo/english-breakfast thesite.com/engelsk-frukost If the users web browser is set to English I'd like to show a small notice at the top of the Swedish version with a link to the English one. The link should have an appropriate rel attribute for a translation (search for hreflang at http://diveintohtml5.org/semantics.html). There should be a way to list all articles belonging to these sets: Swedish only, English only, Swedish versions + English only, English versions + Swedish only. I'd like to publish these as four RSS-feeds. And I would like to have two versions of the main site, one in Swedish (showing Swedish versions + English only) and one in English (showing English versions). I shall be able to write the articles using Markdown, as that is the formatting language I find most convenient. There should be a way for users to comment. And some kind of way for me to protect myself against comment spam. I am leaning towards learning Drupal. I suspect I'll have to code this behavior myself as a module. To be frank I'd rather work with Java. Is Drupal the way to go? Or is there something more suitable for this project?

  I'm looking for the simplest way of creating 'buttons' with bootom-central triangles as follows: |--------| | Text | |---\/---| By buttons/menu items I mean something which will will support atomic mouse behavior for the whole shape's region. No rounded corners just the shape itself. I saw plenty of websites doing thsese buttons lately, but now for some strange reason I couldn't find any. Ideally I'm looking for tutorial links or some general guidances, as the topic might be too big to be covered by one post. Technology scope wise - ideally I'm looking for Html5/Css3 solution. I don't care mouch about old IE support and I think Html5/css3 will give a slicker/more elegant solution. On the way forward I might need to add drop shadows, which is another argument in favour of css3. Thanks.

• Track user through Google Universal Analytics

  I want to track a user from my site, give an id to Google Analytics and later be able to see which pages that id visited and for how long did that id view the pages. I've tried custom variables with the classic analytics. I tried enabling the User-ID feature in the Universal Analytics. Neither of these have given me what I want yet. Is there any way to accomplish this with Universal Analytics? UPDATE This is a sample code with a user whose id is 2. • Phishing alert but file never existed

  I got an alert from Google Webmasters. They say the following file was present in my host: example.com/~jhostgop/identity.php I checked my files and it never existed at all. I've experience this problem in two different host and domains but the file never existed in my file system. It appears somebody out there is linking a random domain and it prefixes the link with /~jhostgop/identity.php. Now Google may have indexed them so now I get those false phishing alerts. Anyone experienced this? Is it possible to prevent this?

  I've tried transferring SSL issued by GoDaddy to Linux based server. The website was originally hosted in Windows. After the installation is completed, I got a message like this in cPanel: Certificate ID: *********** Domains: xxxxsomethingxxxxx.com Issuer: GoDaddy.com, Inc. Key Size: 2,048 bits Expiration: Feb 10, 2015 10:05:10 PM Does that look fine? Does the Issuer still remain as GoDaddy? Now how do I test to see if this is in fact working? After installing the SSL in the Linux server, do I now need to do something in GoDaddy or in the previous Windows server to indicate that the SSL has now been transferred to the new server?

I thought I have everything needed: programming and administration skills, found a good designer, own servers and understanding how to operate site. But I've missed very important (or the most important) point: how do I find a subject for my site? My hobby and my work are the same: IT, but I don't want to create just another tech blog or news aggregator, I want something different. First I thought things like Google Trends or Google top 1000 could help, but I've got lost in thousands of options I can't see them all (I actually can, but it'll take at least a couple of month). • How to dump a MediaWiki for offline use?

  I would like to be able to make an offline version of a MediaWiki site on a weekly basis. The DumpHTML extension actually does what I want, as it dumps all articles and media files, but I can't see any index of all the articles it have dumped, so I can't navigate in the dump. Reading about the XML dump feature MediaWiki have, I wonder if it would be possible to either use a program to view these files or perhaps convert them to html? Or are there other ways to make an offline version of a MediaWiki site?

  I've used article tags on websites. My understanding and practice is to use the article tag for publication content. I always use HTML/HTML5 tags as their intended purposes and not at will. Recently, I've seen an HTML template that uses the article tag for the non-publication page content such as the content of an About Us page or any other generic page. I asked the why it was used this way and the (vague) explanation was that it had to do with the way the iPad read the tag. Is this true?

  I have been asked to compile a report into dropout rates during checkout for a global webstore I have used a sample size over one month as my sample because: google analytics slows to a crawl over larger sample sizes and makes much of the analysis agonisingly small I believe it to be statistically significant and a representative sample My client has asked me why I didn't use yearly figures and wants proof that one month of data is 'statistically significant'. Am I right in thinking that I need to compare the standard deviation of my monthly sample to the yearly sample and ensure that the deviation is under a certain %age? Question: how do I prove one month of Google Analytics data is representative to one year worth of data? Stats: 90k unique views/month ~1.1m per year.

• Google Analytics Filters not removing traffic from other domain

  We have a frustrating problem where someone copied our site code including our Google Analytics code. So we are getting stats logged from their site which is very frustrating. I have setup 4 Filters, each trying to disallow any traffic from this other website, but still their traffic is being shown, including on the Real Time section.   We have google analytics account and trying to do reverse transaction. We have created a transaction on one date and reverse transaction on some other date. After transaction if we do reverse transaction it disappears from transactions list. Is it the expected behavior or abnormal behavior? But, if we check the same order data in sales performance, the reverse transaction does not reflects on when we created the transaction, it reflecting on when we made reverse transaction date. It should not be do like this. The reverse transaction should affect the same date on when we made transaction date.

  We're running a website which enables users to download documents about our company, such as: -wallpapers with the company logo. -company logos in various flavours. -media kits in pdf format. Since these files are quite big in size (some reach 1MB), we no longer want them to be downloaded from our website directly as it's consuming our bandwidth. Accordingly we've been looking into document sharing services. For instance we found Scribd which could allow us to share pdf files, but not our wallpapers and logos which are in png format. Is there a free service we can use for our users to reliably download any type of files we want to host? (ideally on a service which allows users to easily browse through our files).
