• How to set resolution higher than maximum shown?

  I just bought an external monitor for my laptop (Asus VH242H) but cannot set its resolution to anything higher than 1600x900. I tried both from System/Administration/Monitors and the ATI Catalyst Control Center. There was a CD that came with the monitor but it only contains a Windows installer. According to the monitor's specifications: 23.6” 16:9 widescreen with 1920×1080 resolution enables borderless Full HD 1080p full-screen video display. My graphic card is an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670 and the monitor is currently connected to my laptop with a VGA cable. How can I set my external monitor to its maximum resolution?

• Searching for the Perfect Developer&rsquo;s Laptop.

  I have been in the market for a new computer for several months. I set out with a budget of around $1200. I knew up front that the machine would be used for developing applications and maybe some light gaming. I kept switching between buying a laptop or a desktop but the laptop won because: With a Laptop, I can carry it everywhere and with a desktop I can’t. I searched for about 2 weeks and narrowed it down to a list of must-have’s : i7 Processor (I wasn’t going to settle for an i5 or AMD. I wanted a true Quad-core machine, not 2 dual-core fused together). 15.6” monitor SSD 128GB or Larger. – It’s almost 2011 and I don’t want an old standard HDD in this machine. 8GB of DDR3 Ram. – The more the better, right? 1GB Video Card (Prefer NVidia) – I might want to play games with this. HDMI Port – Almost a standard on new Machines. This would be used when I am on the road and want to stream Netflix to the HDTV in the Hotel room. Webcam Built-in – This would be to video chat with the wife and kids if I am on the road. 6-Cell Battery. – I’ve read that an i7 in a laptop really kills the battery. A 6-cell or 9-cell is even better. That is a pretty long list for a budget of around $1200. I searched around the internet and could not buy this machine prebuilt for under $1200. That was even with coupons and my company’s 10% Dell discount. The only way that I would get a machine like this was to buy a prebuilt and replace parts. I chose the  Lenovo Y560 on Newegg to start as my base. Below is a top-down picture of it.   Part 1: The Hardware The Specs for this machine: Color :  GrayOperating System : Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bitCPU Type : Intel Core i7-740QM(1.73GHz)Screen : 15.6" WXGAMemory Size : 4GB DDR3Hard Disk : 500GBOptical Drive : DVD±R/RWGraphics Card : ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730Video Memory : 1GBCommunication : Gigabit LAN and WLANCard slot : 1 x Express Card/34Battery Life : Up to 3.5 hoursDimensions : 15.20" x 10.00" x 0.80" - 1.30"Weight : 5.95 lbs. This computer met most of the requirements above except that it didn’t come with an SSD or have 8GB of DDR3 Memory. So, I needed to start shopping except this time for an SSD. I asked around on twitter and other hardware forums and everyone pointed me to the Crucial C300 SSD. After checking prices of the drive, it was going to cost an extra $275 bucks and I was going from a spacious 500GB drive to 128GB. After watching some of the SSD videos on YouTube I started feeling better. Below is a pic of the Crucial C300 SSD. The second thing that I needed to upgrade was the RAM. It came with 4GB of DDR3 RAM, but it was slow. I decided to buy the Crucial 8GB (4GB x 2) Kit from Newegg. This RAM cost an extra $120 and had a CAS Latency of 7. In the end this machine delivered everything that I wanted and it cost around $1300. You are probably saying, well your budget was $1200. I have spare parts that I’m planning on selling on eBay or Anandtech.  =) If you are interested then shoot me an email and I will give you a great deal mbcrump[at]gmail[dot]com. 500GB Laptop 7200RPM HDD 4GB of DDR3 RAM (2GB x 2) faceVision HD 720p Camera – Unopened In the end my Windows Experience Rating of the SSD was 7.7 and the CPU 7.1. The max that you can get is a 7.9. Part 2: The Software I’m very lucky that I get a lot of software for free. When choosing a laptop, the OS really doesn’t matter because I would never keep the bloatware pre-installed or Windows 7 Home Premium on my main development machine. Matter of fact, as soon as I got the laptop, I immediately took out the old HDD without booting into it. After I got the SSD into the machine, I installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit. The BIOS was out of date, so I updated that to the latest version and started downloading drivers off of Lenovo’s site. I had to download the Wireless Networking Drivers to a USB-Key before I could get my machine on my wireless network. I also discovered that if the date on your computer is off then you cannot join the Windows 7 Homegroup until you fix it. I’m aware that most people like peeking into what programs other software developers use and I went ahead and listed my “essentials” of a fresh build. I am a big Silverlight guy, so naturally some of the software listed below is specific to Silverlight. You should also check out my master list of Tools and Utilities for the .NET Developer.   I am involved into development a rich UI project: desktop windows application. Application uses asynchronous invocations and in its turn it should be ready to process external messages (events). The problem is clear: at first time it was built as a simple prototype and it was not stress tested and all was fine. Then application was grown: the number of calls to server and number of events from server are high and performance is low. What is more users noticed that sometimes performance is extremal low. Asynchronous invocations based on thread pool (BeginInvoke, EndInvoke), external events are going from WCF service (.NET 3.5). My goal is synchronization of all tasks and putting priorities to every executions in desktop application. My question is: is there any practice how to reach my goal: patterns, task priority list, others? What should I do at first, second and next times? Thanks

• How do you find libraries(C++) in Ubuntu?

  Sorry this is such a beginner question, but I've recently begun programming with C++ on Ubuntu 12.10 and I've installed a few libraries I need to work with, for example PCL and I can't find them to add them to my project, I'm using QTcreator as the IDE and qmake which comes with it. For example with PCL I followed the instructions on their site: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:v-launchpad-jochen-sprickerhof-de/pcl sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install libpcl-all And as no problems occurred I have to assume they are correctly installed. Most of the tutorial dealing with adding external libraries I've found on the web assume you're on windows and know where you downloaded the library. Since I don't have experience with adding external libraries in C++, could someone please tell me in what file, if there is one, are libraries installed by default in Ubuntu? What is the extension of these library files? Is there a script/command which can help detect a library or all the libraries installed?

• Should I rely on externally-hosted services?

  I am wondering over the dangers / difficulties in using external services like Google Chart in my production state website. With external services I mean them that you can't download and host on your own server. (-) Potentially the Google service can be down when my site is up. (+) I don't have to develop those particular systems for new browser technologies, hopefully Google will do that for me. (-) Extra latency while my site fetch the data from the google servers. What else? Is it worth spending time and money to develop my own systems to be more in control of things?

• Saving and Loading the Game (Automatically or Manually) via Internal Storage Only (Tablet PC Issues)

  Here is my question. When making a game app for Android, I considered first the device. It's no problem to save progress everything (from levels to records) on a smartphone because it has an SD Card slot. Exception to this, the tablet PC, it can really nothing but on internal only storage. For example, I'm using this tutorial for audio spectrum (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5cN1VzZXcdo) that involves copying from internal to external in order to detect frequency. It works on the desktop but not on the Android device (Tablets only [i.e. Google Nexus Tablet]). Is there a way to optimize save/load game problems due to internal/external device issues? Plus, additionally, what's the reason why my device won't work on tablets, except the desktop, while testing the audio spectrum code and why? Also, is it the same with saving/loading game?

• Speed up Banshee's indexing of files on a device

  I've got an external hard drive with music on it, around 250 albums. To make it work nicely with Banshee, I've created an .is_audio_player file on the device, containing audio_folders=Music. Every time I plug it in, Banshee takes around two minutes to index the thing, slowly building up the library - and being unusably sluggish while doing that. Is there, per chance, any way to speed it up? Should I not mount the hard disk as a music player, but add it's contents to my library? And, if I do, won't that give me lots of annoying X symbols next to the titles, as they can't be found sometimes? What's the best way to have my library on an external HDD?

  It's the time of year when a lot of NetBeans Platform tutorials are being reviewed, revised, and rewritten. Today I'm looking at the NetBeans Platform Paint Application Tutorial. Suddenly I remembered seeing something in a recent API Changes document about a new class, ColorComboBox. That means I can make the tutorial a lot simpler, since Tim Boudreau's external ColorChooser.jar is now superfluous. Here's what the ColorComboBox looks like: It works perfectly. Of course, the nice thing about using that JAR was that it showed the user how to incorporate external JARs, but I'll make sure to make a note of that in the tutorial, along the lines of "If you don't like the NetBeans Platform color combobox, and would like to replace it with your own, such as Tim's ColorChooser.jar or a JavaFX color chooser, take the following steps." In short, if you're using NetBeans APIs, write this on your ceiling above your bed: http://bits.netbeans.org/dev/javadoc/apichanges.html, check that page regularly (mark it in your calendar to do first thing every Monday morning) and you'll be aware of the latest changes as they happen.

• How to safely collect bank account from website?

  I want to collect bank account information from my customers on my website. I'd like to do that trough a form, then I will download it to a PC, print it, and then delete it from the website. Or eventually, send it somewhere external right after the user submitted the form so it never gets stored on the website. The goal is to recieve the payment information without having to ask the customer to print, fill manually, and send it over fax. And accomplish this without having to use an external payment gateway. • Recover files from NTFS drive with bad sectors

  A few nights ago I have created a backup of my data on an external 500 GB NTFS USB hard drive. I have then formatted my computer, reinstalled Ubuntu and started transferring back the data from the external HDD. Unfortunately some files have became corrupted and Ubuntu is unable to copy them over. The same issue happens if I login using Windows 7. Disk Utility detects with SMART that there are "a few bad sectors". Some of files are perfectly intact, but other files cannot be accessed (nor read, copied...) although they are displayed within nautilus and show the correct file size. Is there anything I can do to recover this data? I have thought of using TestDisk but this utility seems more useful for repairing lost partitions or deleted files. I have also thought of using ddrescue so I could at least have a low level copy of the disk but I am not sure what use to make of it in order to recover the data!!!

• Unit testing - getting started

  I am just getting started with unit testing but I am not sure if I really understand the point of it all. I read tutorials and books on it all, but I just have two quick questions: I thought the purpose of unit testing is to test code we actually wrote. However, to me it seems that in order to just be able to run the test, we have to alter the original code, at which point we are not really testing the code we wrote but rather the code we wrote for testing. Most of our codes rely on external sources. Upon refactoring our code however, even it would break the original code, our tests still would run just fine, since the external sources are just muck-ups inside our test cases. Doesn't it defeat the purpose of unit testing? Sorry if I sound dumb here, but I thought someone could enlighten me a bit. Thanks in advance.

• Sound plays from laptop speakers only even when headphones are connected

  I'm using a Dell Vostro 1014 laptop with Ubuntu 11.10. From the time I had Ubuntu 9.04, sound comes from the laptop speakers only even when I plug in earphones or external speakers. Also, if an external microphone plugged in, it does not work. Dell even replaced my motherboard to check for hardware issues but the problem persists. So it is definitely not a hardware issue. The sound plays perfectly through the headphones in the pre-boot diagnostics. So I figure, this must be a problem with Ubuntu not recognizing my sound card. Please try to give a solution for this problem.

• Why doesn't my graphic card software support 1280*1024?

  Hi, I have an external monitor which is an 20" 1280*1024. In windows 7 it works fine with that resolution but in ubuntu it can't. Example: In windows I connect it and activates it, done. In ubuntu I connect and the only resolution that is available is the ones my laptop screen support, 12" 1366*768. My laptop is an asus 1201n. If I force it to use 1280*1024 both screen crashes and i have to force a reboot. When I force it I only force the external monitor, the laptop is already at maximum 1366*768. I connect it throw VGA. • Changing internal home network ip address for connected devices

  I have a few computers at home. For each of the computers, I can see the internal home network ip address on any given device by typing in ifconfig in the terminal. If the device is connected to the home network via ethernet connection or via the built-in wireless connections in laptops, the internal ip address for each of the devices seems to be 192.168.0.X. However, when I connect one of the devices using an external usb modem wireless adapter, which connects to the home network through wireless, when I check the ip address via ifconfig, for some reason it gets assigned 192.168.42.X instead. Why are the ethernet and build in wireless connections getting 192.168.0.X, but the external usb wireless adapter gets 192.168.42.X? Most importantly, is it possible to force it to get an internal ip address of 192.168.0.X?

• MAAS and Openstack Network

  Trying to figure out the best way for openstack and MASS networks to co-exist. Assuming MAAS used 10.0.0.0/24 for provisioning of various openstack nodes, once openstack, with quantum, is deployed should 10.0.0.0 be used as management network, external network, both or discarded? Reason for the question being that I ran a deployment where openstack used 10.0.0.0 as its management network, MAAS dhcp and dns were active; however, I could only access VMs through namespace and was not able to utilize MAAS's dhcp to assign floating IP. (VMs network was through an internal bridge 10.10.10.10, and external bridge was using the same interface as MAAS.) Any thoughts or ideas are appreciated.

  The major online IDEs are hosted on the service provider's server. Examples are Kodingen, Cloud9, ShiftEdit. Hence they would be unavailable if the external server was down for some reason, and I prefer to do my computing on my own computer anyway. Does anyone know of an online IDE or editor (preferably just an editor - a simple implementation of the Ace or CodeMirror JS editors) which can be downloaded and run on localhost (on a local LAMP server)? I've found two so far - Eclipse Orion and Wiode, but I don't like either of them very much, and I'm looking for alternatives. Also suitable are browser extensions which run natively on the browser (offline) without going to some external site. An example would be SourceKit for Chrom(e/ium).

• Windows 7 Virtual PC - &ldquo;RPC server unavailable&rdquo;

  I use Windows 7 Virtual PC on my current project and I often bring home the files, so I can work some in the evenings.  Since my VHDs are large, I’ll only copy the undo disks, saved state, and virtual machine config files from my external drive.  I copy them to a small portable drive and once I get home, I’ll copy them to a large external drive. I’ve done this for over a year, but recently I started getting an error when I tried to start the VPC after the copying was finished.  It would open the initial window with the progress bar, but eventually the bar would stop, turn red, and then the error “RPC server unavailable” would appear.  When I first started seeing these, I’d try again, but no luck. After some testing, it turns out that my small portable drive is apparently going bad, so it was corrupting the files.  Lucky for me, that I never overwrote my good copies with corrupted copies, at least not at both the office and at home.

• Uninstalling GRUB from MacBook Air

  So... I have a MacBook Air and I recently tried to install Ubuntu on my external HD. I booted Ubuntu from a flash drive and everything had gone fine. I turned off my computer and when I turned it on again I got a message of error and a "grub rescue" line to enter some code. I rebooted holding the "option" key and I selected the Mac partition and everything is fine with my system, but every time I start my system and I don't hold the "option" key, I get the same error and the grub rescue message. I just want things to go back to normal, as they were before I installed Ubuntu on my external HD (which, btw, presented a message that said there was no boot loader). What do I do?

  I'm experiencing a boot/reboot quirk similar to, yet somewhat different from others posted here. I have two Western Digital "Passport" external USB2 drives (160GB and 320GB) with Ubuntu 11.10 installed. The BIOS on my laptop is set to boot USB drives before the internal drive, and it works well. Either drive will cold-boot Ubuntu 11.10 perfectly. However, at times the computer must be restarted (warm boot) to have software updates or other changes take effect. When I warm-boot the computer, the computer goes through its normal shutdown/restart, then the usual BIOS tests, at which time the USB drive is selected momentarily (as normal), and that's when the trouble starts. I get a "No boot sector found on USB device", and the computer proceeds to boot Windows from the internal drive. If I press F12 early during the restart sequence (allows manual selection of the boot sequence), USB is still shown before the internal drive on the sequence list (as it should be). If I highlight "USB" and press ENTER, I still get a "No boot sector..." error message, but the external USB drive then proceeds to boot Ubuntu normally. I have a third external USB drive (Western Digital 160 GB Media Center) that cold-boots and warm-boots perfectly, so I know everything in the computer is set up properly. It also tells me Ubuntu is set up correctly on the drives, as all three drives were done identically, and at the same time. I've tried formatting the Passport drives NTFS and FAT32, but it didn't change anything. If I power-down the computer, then start it up again, it will boot Ubuntu from either of the Passport drives perfectly - every time. It's as if during a warm boot the Passport drives are somehow looking for the boot loader in the wrong location on the drive - yet either drives works when booting from a cold start. Not a show-stopper .. but frustrating. Computer is a Dell XPS M1530, A12 BIOS (latest), but I don't think the computer plays into the issue because one of the three drives works at all times. It's only the two WD Passport models at issue here. Thanks!
