• Faster way to compare two sets of points in N-dimensional space?

  List1 contains a high number (~7^10) of N-dimensional points (N <=10), List2 contains the same or fewer number of N-dimensional points (N <=10). My task is this: I want to check which point in List2 is closest (euclidean distance) to a point in List1 for every point in List1 and subsequently perform some operation on it. I have been doing it the simple- the nested loop way when I didn't have more than 50 points in List1, but with 7^10 points, this obviously takes up a lot of time. What is the fastest way to do this? Any concepts from Computational Geometry might help?

• In a Linux user space process what is the address of the vsyscall page?

  I would like to acquire the address of the vsyscall page for my own uses. I only have two ideas here: alter the compiler to store this information in some known location after it is given to __start, or read /proc/[pid]/maps. I really don't want to read /proc/ as that is slow and shouldn't be necessary. I also don't want to make compiler modifications. Does anyone have an alternative? Is there a symbol I should know about? Its at the point I'm tempted to stuff this functionality into an ioctl call in a module I've developed as part of this work!

• Command to surround a character with spaces in vim

  I am trying to use vim properly - to aid me I've mapped my arrow keys to "" so that I am forced to use {hjlk} to move around. This is causing me a problem when I want to just surround a character with spaces, eg: "2+3" is better formatted "2 + 3" Previously I would have put my cursor over the + and typed: i[space][arrow-right][space][Esc] That's 5 presses. To do this without the arrow I seem to need to put the cursor over the + and go: i[space][Esc]lli[space][Esc] That's 8 presses. I can convert the "li" into an "a" which reduces it to 7 presses: i[space][Esc]la[space][Esc] Short of writing this into a macro is there a better way of doing it? Is there some magic vim command which will allow me to do it in less than even 5 presses - and some way to generalise it so that I can do it to entire words or symbols, eg if I want to convert 3==4 to 3 == 4?

• Lucene.Net - How to treat a space-seperated phrase as a single token?

  I've implemented a search facility using Lucene.Net. The index includes UK academic qualifications, including "A Level". I'd like the users to be able to search using the phrase "A Level", but using the Standrad Analyser the "A" is stripped out as a stop-word and therefore only "Level" is indexed/searched. What's my best option to work around this? I'm guessing I need to somehow tokenise "A Level" to "A-Level" or similar by creating a custom analyser. Is this the best approach? Note that I want don't want the whole search to be a phrase query. i.e. in my search box I want the user to be able to enter <"A Level" AND English Maths Physics and this would return any with "A Level" and either of English MAths or Physics.   I have a problem with loading a DLL under Windows Mobile 5.0. I'm pretty confident that this is caused by running out of the application virtual memory (the 32 MB slot of the process, as explained in Windows CE .NET Advanced Memory Management). I'm looking for a way to actually make sure that this is the issue and investigate whether my efforts bring expected results. Do you know of a way to check the contents of the virtual memory application slot? Any applications that can help me with this task?

• How to detect iPhone movement in space using accelerometer ?

  Hi ! I am trying to make an application that would detect what kind of shape you made with your iPhone using accelerometer. As an example, if you draw a circle with your hand holding the iPhone, the app would be able to redraw it on the screen. This could also work with squares, or even more complicated shapes. The only example of application I've seen doing such a thing is AirPaint (http://vimeo.com/2276713), but it doesn't seems to be able to do it in real time. My first try is to apply a low-pass filter on the X and Y parameters from the accelerometer, and to make a pointer move toward these values, proportionally to the size of the screen. But this is clearly not enought, I have a very low accuracy, and if I shake the device it also makes the pointer move... Any ideas about that ? Do you think accelerometer data is enought to do it ? Or should I consider using other data, such as the compass ? Thanks in advance !

  It is possible to use position:absolute and left and right on the middle column to set where it ends in relation to the parent div. However I'd like to be able to have the left side of the center div to start right where the left column ends, and for the left column to be adjustable (based on its content). This seems like a really basic thing but from what I understand there is no way to do this without flexboxes. Is this true? Is there nothing I could do with clever nesting of semantically superfluous elements and certain styles set to auto?

  So far, I was always creating open-source applications (or didn't publish them at all) because it was free for me to create a new CodePlex project, and upload everything. Couple of days ago I started wandering what kind of apps should I make, closed or open source. I can see "cons" and "pros" in both such as the ones below: Open Source: Pro, free project hosting (CodePlex is excellent for .NET app updates. ClickOnce etc) Pro, free help such as developers and designers Con, people can get your source code and (sometimes) use some of your code in their apps and make money Con, companies such as Microsoft, Twitter or Tumblr won't be looking forward in buying your project (like for example Twitter bought TweetDeck - TweetDeck being a closed source AIR application, of course) Closed Source: Pro, it's harder for people to copy your idea without the source code Pro, you're more likely to get acquired/bought by companies Con, no free hosting - you have to have a website to do so (not good for updates) Con, no free help What do you think?
