• Dial-in VPN Routing issue when on 192.168.x.x network range

  I'm not an expert on networks but have a small office on the 192.168.x.x. range which is managed by a vigor (2800) router. I have enabled the VPN dial-in option on the router so I can get to the server on 192.168.1.100 which works fine from my macbook when i'm NOT on a local network with that is on the 192.168.x.x range. e.g. works fine when I tether over my Android smartphone but when I try & connect when on my home network, it connects, I can access the router (192.168.1.1) but cannot access 192.168.1.100 - traceroute doesn't hop via 192.168.1.1 I have enabled "send all traffic over VPN connection but again, not joy... Feels like the osx platform isn't routing the traffic out to the vpn endpoint as the destination address is on the local subnet but expect it would be. This work fine on a windows PC on the same home network. Any thoughts on what the issue could be?

• How to make fonts smooth and readable in Debian/Ubuntu?

  What is the best, most foolproof way of getting nice font rendering in Linux? Currently, I am experiencing thin, ugly fonts (shown below). I have wasted too much time tweaking fonts.conf, and I have yet to find a decent combination. I am running Debian 6.0 with no desktop environment (just Openbox for a window manager) in a VM on a Macbook Pro (OS X 10.7.4). • Apps not starting on Mac OS X Lion

  I have a strange problem, some apps that I download do not launch. There are 2 scenarios The application starts but keeps bouncing, once I click the bouncing icon in the tray it disappears. The process also closes in activity monitor The application fails to start, how ever many times I launch it, it refuses. • Mountain Lion screen crashes after returning from sleep

  During the past 3 days I have experienced the following issue: when returning from sleep, I see an extremely garbled version of my desktop. The only thing that seems to help is a reboot. My first guess is that this is related to the video card. After looking into this issue, I found a lot of problems related to ML and returning from sleep, such as this post on AskDifferent, but I think this is a different issue because it does not speak of a garbled screen. Some more details: System: MacBook Pro 15" early 2011, 2,2GHZ I7, 8GB Ram, AMD Radeon HD6750M 1024 The issue seems to happen only when I open my laptop in the morning; if I close and open my laptop during the day, it does not seem to happen. The issue 'solves' when rebooting. Photo of how this looks: Update November 27th 2012: I re-installed my laptop a couple of weeks ago, which seemed to have solved the problem, but sadly, it still persists.

• How do I share my iPhoto photos with my ubuntu partition?

  I have a MacBook Pro dual-booted with Snow Leopard and Ubuntu Karmic. I have recently imported hundreds of my photos into iPhoto - but I now want to be able to see them (and use them as desktop/screen saver images) from my Ubuntu partition (ie when the machine is running Ubuntu instead of MacOS). Is there an easy way to do this direct from the iPhoto library or do I have to shift them all out to an external file directory or something? Further edit - just to make it clear: I have already uploaded my photos directly into iPhoto - then spent many days categorising, tagging and uploading to flickr. Unless there's something I'm missing, I'm guessing it's likely too late to do the "don't copy into the iPhoto library" option. Happy to be proven wrong :) Perhaps somebody knows of a way to "export" the library without losing any of the current information - so that I can (from then on) keep the photos in an external library? I don't want to do this, though, if I lose the information that is currently there.

• How to troubleshoot problems sharing internet connection via WiFi on Mac OS X

  I'm at a hotel, plugged into their network via ethernet on my MacBook. I want to share the connection via wifi to two other computers. I went to Prefs Sharing and set up internet sharing. I know it's working because my friend with a Mac access the net fine. My friend with the PC can see the network, but can't connect to it. In the sharing prefs, airport options, I chose these options: Channel: Automatic Enable encryption: yes WEP Key length 40-bit password length: 5 chars (as specified in the instructional text) Update: I tried it with encryption turned off, and it works. Of course, I'd rather not do that... Any ideas?

• Sudden loss of Wi-Fi connectivity on OS X

  Occasionally while I work, without any special provocation, I lose connectivity via Wi-Fi. Other devices connected to the same wifi network have no interruption, and the problem gets resolved once I reboot my MacBook Air, so it's definitely a local problem. Observations: The Wi-Fi symbol in the menu indicates that I'm still connected, but apps can't actually connect neither to the Internet nor to other devices in the LAN. I can't connect to an alternate Wi-Fi network (e.g. Wi-Fi tethering via iPhone). I can connect to the Internet via iPhone USB tethering but this seems to only work some of the time. Only a reboot solves the problem but a regular restart gets stuck on a grey screen with rotating wheel (after all applications have closed) and I have to do a hard reset. How should I go about troubleshooting this? It used to happen very rarely but now is becoming more frequent (approaching once every 2-3 days on average).

• Adobe Illustrator - Objects are Expanded on Restart

  I use Adobe Illustrator extensively for mobile development. For example, for Android app, I have many illustrations with different densities and sizes. I use many effects such as outer glow, round corners and such. However, sometimes, when I close the .ai file and re-open it later, I found all my objects expanded. Effects are expanded. For example, the round corner effect is now expanded and I cannot re-size any object. I am using a MacBook Pro. I am suspecting both Time Machine and Dropbox. As much as I can recall, it also appears with CS6 version, not CS5.

• Wireless dropouts that only affect subset of devices

  When watching videos streamed over WiFi from a NAS box (D-Link DNS-323) I am getting wireless dropouts. However they only appear to occur when I have left my laptop (Dell Inspiron 9300 running Windows XP SP3) running; the laptop is usually suspended if I'm not using it. The dropouts have occurred when streaming to a Netgear EVA8000 streaming device, and also to a PS3. I'm using a Netgear DG834G as the wireless modem/router. When a dropout occurs I go to the laptop and see that its wireless connection has also dropped out. The odd thing is that my wife's MacBook and my iPhone still maintain their connections. What could be causing this behaviour, and how do I go about fixing it?

• Why has my Mac been running fsck_hfs for two days now?

  I first noticed that fsck_hfs was running, taking up 50-75% of a CPU, yesterday. It continues to run today. ps shows that it is doing /sbin/fsck_hfs -f -n -x -E /dev/disk3. Only problem: I don’t think I have a /dev/disk3. Why is it running? Will it ever finish? Can I kill it? What is /dev/disk3? Could it be my Time Machine volume, which is not mounted at the moment? System Info: MacBook Pro (2008). It has two disks installed—the internal disk (/dev/disk1) and a PC Card SSD (/dev/disk0, surprisingly). It connects to a remote Time Machine volume attached to an Airport Extreme base station.

• Monitor does not work past certain resolution.

  I have a Macbook 5.1 with Snow Leopard, and a Samsung SyncMaster 2253BW that I use for an external monitor. I connect it to my laptop via a DVI-to-MiniDisplayPort adapter. Whenever I try to set the resolution of the monitor to 1680x1050, its maximum resolution (at least the only one that fills the entire screen), the screen flickers once or twice before claiming there is no source attached. I've had this issue since the first time I tried to connect the two, however for some reason for a brief period in time the monitor would successfully display at full resolution. All lower resolutions work fine too, it's just at 1680x1050 that the problems occur. Any ideas as to why this is happening? Thanks.

• Take a psd and export all the layers into separate image files without using Photoshop

  This is my first question here and I'm not sure if this is the appropriate site for my question, but here it goes. If this is not the correct site, please direct me to the correct one. I have a psd file. I simply want to extract the layers from it into separate image files. I do not have Photoshop and I've already used up the free Photoshop trial. I am running Mountain Lion on a MacBook Pro. I have installed Gimp, but I can't figure out how to do what I want. I have searched using Google, but have been completely unable to find a tutorial showing me how to do this. I would really appreciate instructions or a link to an appropriate tutorial. I have seen some answers here, but they simply say use Gimp, which doesn't help me.

• Why does OS X automatically logout my user?

  I have a new MacBook Air set up with filevault. In the Security preference pane I have "Require password 1 hour after sleep or screen saver begins" enabled, but the "Logout after 60 minutes of inactivity" is disabled. When I leave the computer on overnight I manually lock the screen (from the Keychain status menu bar, which I enabled via the Keychain Access preferences). Alas, in the morning I find that instead of a locked screen I see the login window, after my user was logged out with all applications terminated... (e.g. Firefox thinks it previously crashed when I launch it). This type of behavior only started after I enabled Filevault. Why is this happening? How do I prevent such auto-logout?

• How can I use mobile network account at server so home sync works

  I would like to be able to use a mobile network account while sitting at my server. I had os x server 10.6 running on a mac mini server but recently got a new quad core iMac and want to take advantage of the extra power. My problem - I can sit at the server and log into the mobile network account but can not get it to sync back. When I attempt to sync it get error message that the afp share point is unavailable and that the files are hosted locally. My goal is to be able to use the new iMac as the server and set a user account so that it remains synced so when the account is accessed from other clients, particularly my macbook pro. Is mobile account the best route? Would an external account be a better option. Any advice or ideas of where to read up on this would be much appreciated.

• What's the simplest way to get .flac music files into iTunes?

  I'm looking for a simple way to import .flac files into iTunes, so I can play them on my mac, and when I'm out, my iPhone, and I'm willing to be I'm not the first person to want to do this. What are the best tools for doing this? The quality of the music is useful, but truth be told, the speakers I'd play them on are so crappy that a lot of the sound quality in the .flac format would be lost anyway, so I'm not averse to converting to mp3 files. If it helps give any context, I'm using a Macbook with OS 10.5 Leopard, and iTunes 9, connected to a 16gb iPhone with standard apple headphones, which is sometimes plugged into Bose SoundDock for music, and the music files are piano performances. I have been wondering how do I select the File Menu which I am so used to doing in Windows using Alt + F, so that I do not have to click on the File menu each time I need to do something. I googled and checked out a bunch of articles as well. This wikipedia article suggests http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Table_of_keyboard_shortcuts CTRL +F2 then F. I tried this in Sublime Text and did not work for me. Any clues? Thanks.

• Thunderbird 3.0 refuses to start on Mac OS X?

  I just downloaded Thunderbird 3.0 on my Macbook Pro running Leopard, and installed it in /Applications. When I attempt to start it, the icon opens on the Dock as normal, but I get the following dialog. I don't have a ~/Library/Application Support/Thunderbird directory at all, let alone a .parentlock file. While I didn't expect it to help, I did reboot my system. And sign out and back in. And close all programs besides Thunderbird. Earlier versions of Thunderbird have worked just fine.

• Gmail outage only on one computer

  Problem: Gmail (and only Gmail) quits working for a period of 5-10 mins only on one computer. Problem occurs several times daily Does not appear to be any "triggering event" - user is simply using Gmail normally when the problem arises User can access their Gmail from other computers on same LAN User can access all other sites, including other Google sites, from affected computer After several mins of outage, Gmail will spontaneously resume normal operation on affected computer The problem occurs in all browsers (Chrome, FF, Safari) Computer: MacBook Pro, OSX 10.7.3, latest browsers I find this very baffling. • Burn iTunes playlist to Audio Image

  I have Snow Leopard on an early model MacBook Pro. The CD Drive has been giving me fits the last few months -- I stick a blank CD in it, and it claims it's bad and spits it out. I can go through a pile of brand-new CD's and it will choose 1 out of 7 that it wants to use, even though all the CD's come from the same package. The rejected CD's work fine on a Linux machine I have. I need to burn an audio CD from iTunes and my thought was: Burn playlist to audio CD Image file (Red Book image?) Copy ISO file to Linux Machine Use Linux machine to burn audio image to a CD But looking around, it doesn't seem that iTunes on OSX will support this. I was wondering if anyone else has accomplished this.

• Need help upgrading MacBookPro3,1 RAM to 4GB.

  My questions are: 1) Where to buy it and what to buy? I have heard that this RAM is generic enough and it does not have to come from Apple. 2) Can I reuse my existing stick(s)? Would I have a single 2GB module, or 2 x 1GB modules? 3) If I have 2GB already, is it a good idea to have one old stick and one new one? Which one is better placed at the top and which one at the bottom? Let me know what questions you have. • HFS partition mounting read-only

  Hey, I have an external Western Digital Hard drive with two HFS partitions with journaling disabled. When I connect it to a computer running Linux (Debian or Ubuntu), frequently both partitions are mounted read-only. In the past, mounting them on my Macbook and executing the command to disable the journaling often worked (even though it would tell me that journaling was already disabled) but I would love to have a solution which works every time. Thanks! Edit: In light of Chris Johnsen's comment below - my question is how to mount the filesystem read+write on Linux since it is not automatically doing so itself

• Installer hangs on "waiting for other installations to finish" despite no other installations in progress

  I started an installation of the Xcode 4 developer's preview last night before going to bed. When I woke up, the installation had popped up a message saying to close Xcode first (doh!). I did so, but whatever script had displayed the message seemed to have hung because the (uncancellable) message wouldn't disappear, and the installer wouldn't progress. After force quitting the Installer app, the message above was still showing, so I restarted my MacBook Pro and then tried the installation again. This time it wouldn't even start, instead showing one of those candy-stripe activity bars and the message: Waiting for other installations to finish At this point, I'm stumped. There are no other installations in progress, so there must be some artifact left over from the interrupted install that's gumming up the works. But what?

• How do I share a home printer under Windows if the computer is part of a domain?

  I do have my work laptop at home and I want to share an USB printer in order to be able to print to it from my MacBook. Currently Windows 7 is refusing to share the printer because the computer is part of a domain and it tells me that I need to join a homegroup in order to be able to do that. Also it tells me that he cannot create this homegroup and this group has to be create by another Windows 7 computer from my network. • Connect two devices with ethernet

  I have a MacBook Pro and I'm going to buy a Boxee Box. I have access to wireless internet, but it's slow and out of my control. So my question is, what is the best way for both devices to get internet access, and the Boxee Box to get SMB access to the Mac, when only the Mac is connected to the wireless internet? I'm thinking an ethernet cable from the Boxee Box to my Mac, and connection sharing on my Mac. Can you explain the setup, is there any configuring.
