• How do I parse a templated string in Python?

  I'm new to Python, so I'm not sure exactly what this operation is called, hence I'm having a hard time searching for information in it. Basically I'd like to have a string such as: "[[size]] widget that [[verb]] [[noun]]" Where size, verb, and noun are each a list. I'd like to interpret the string as a metalanguage, such that I can make lots of sentences out permutations from the lists. As a metalanguage, I'd also be able to make other strings that use those pre-defined lists to generate more permutations. Are there any capabilities for variable substitution like this in Python? What term describes this operation if I should just Google it?

• Can pydoc/help() hide the documentation for inherited class methods and attributes?

  When declaring a class that inherits from a specific class: class C(dict): added_attribute = 0 the documentation for class C lists all the methods of dict (either through help(C) or pydoc). Is there a way to hide the inherited methods from the automatically generated documentation (the documentation string can refer to the base class, for non-overwritten methods)? or is it impossible? This would be useful: pydoc lists the functions defined in a module after its classes. Thus, when the classes have a very long documentation, a lot of less than useful information is printed before the new functions provided by the module are presented, which makes the documentation harder to exploit (you have to skip all the documentation for the inherited methods until you reach something specific to the module being documented).

• XBox 360 Dashboard Plugins

  Is it possible to create plug ins for the Xbox 360 dashboard? I was looking to turn the 360 into the hub for the family. So you could for example turn the xbox on, and there on the dashboard see all the families calendars merged, todo lists, grocery lists, birthdays etc. I can't see anybody talking about plugins for the dashboard around the net so I'm guessing you can't, but thought I'd check. Next option will be something like a net top running in the family room, but that means 2 devices then, one for gaming and one for the family functions

  Following up on Reason for unintuitive UnboundLocalError behaviour (I will assume you've read it). Consider the following Python script: def f(): # a+=1 # 1 aa=a aa+=1 # b+='b' # 2 bb=b bb+='b' c[0]+='c' # 3 c.append('c') cc=c cc.append('c') # 4 a=1 b='b' c=['c'] f() print a print b print c The result of the script is: 1 b ['cc', 'c', 'c'] The commented out lines (marked 1,2) are lines that would through an UnboundLocalError and the SO question I referenced explains why. However, the line marked 3 works! By default, lists are copied by reference in Python, therefore it's understandable that c changes when cc changes. But why should Python allow c to change in the first place, if it didn't allow changes to a and b directly from the method's scope? I don't see how the fact that by default lists are copied by reference in Python should make this design decision inconsistent. What am I missing folks?

  I have existing tables - I have following datatables : ActivityTable(Key ActivityId) - which lists the identifier for various activity ProcessTable (identified by ProcessId) - which lists down which activites(ActivityId) are to be carried out along with their order(StepNum). Some of the activities are marked constant with in a process, that is they will have same data, ir-respective of there run environment. RunTable(Key RunConfigurationId) - that identifies the project name and Process Id Then data for each activity is stored is stored in their individual tables Activity_A, Activity_B,Activity_C so on it uses a combination of RunConfigurationId,ProcessId and stepNum. For the activities which are constant we use a RunConfigurationId= -100. Can anybody help me out how I can map something like this in classes using inheritence regards

• VB.NET 2008 Application crashing during Do Loop

  I am writing an application to compare each item on listbox1 to all items on listbox2. If the item is found, then remove it from both lists. The goal is to only have the items that were not found remain on both lists. The problem is, the application just hangs and I never get any results. I looked at my code several times and I cannot figure out what's going on (programming noob I know...). Can anybody help me with this?   I have a problem about Linked Lists. I already know how to create structures and linked list. But now I have to create arbitrary number of linked list which are also be kept in another structure. Which means : struct list{int x, struct list *next; }; struct parent{int x, struct list *head, struct parent *next;} And after lists are created when i enter this input for example "123134 linked list should look like : 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 And for example 1 will contain 2-3 list inside of it, 3 will contain 1-4 list inside of it.   Hi, I have a web page that is generated with Access 2003 and uses Office Web Components. It worked fine with IE6 and IE7 but does not work anymore with IE8. Here are more details. I create an MSODSC component and a WSH object to get my ConnectionString in the registry. Then the Dropdown Lists are fed by a request to the database. It works perfect with IE6 and IE7, works locally with IE8 but if the page is served by IIS to IE8, the drop down lists are empty. Can anyone help me ? Thanks Mactov It was just a security issue. I had put my site in the confidence zone (according to the error message). I transfered it into intranet zone and it works perfect.

• How to trigger an event ONLY if both dropdowns are selected?

  I have a dropdown select list on my page of class="TypeFilter". I have a jQuery event that fires when a value in that list is selected. $(".TypeFilter").change(function() { // Extract value from TypeFilter and update page accordingly )); I now have to add another list to the page, and I want to implement functionality which will prevent the .change(function() from running unless both are selected. In both lists the first option in the list is some text instructing the user to select one of the items, so I was thinking of just writing some logic to test that both lists have a selected index greater than 0. I think this is a touch unclean though, especially considering that other pages that have a TypeFilter use the same logic. Is there any nifty functionality in jQuery that can do this?

  Summary I'm attempting to create an AWS CloudFormation template which contains an instance for which I want to select a particular subnet. If I specify the subnet ID then I get the following error The parameter groupName cannot be used with the parameter subnet. From reading this thread it appears I need to provide security group IDs - not names. How can I create a security group in CloudFormation and then get its ID after the fact?   I have an install of Bugzilla I'm trying to implement SSL on. When I go into the parameters screen and edit SSLBASE adding in the full url: https://foo.com/bugzilla/ the editparams.cgi times out on loading and I have the following error in the apache log [Tue Mar 30 19:29:39 2010] [error] [client xxx.xx.xx.xx ] (70007)The timeout specified has expired: ap_content_length_filter: apr_bucket_read() failed, referer: http://foo.com/bugzilla/editparams.cgi On install I also received this error: WARNING: You need to set the max_allowed_packet parameter in your MySQL configuration to at least 3276750. Currently it is set to 3275776. You can set this parameter in the [mysqld] section of your MySQL configuration file. How can I force this to work? Editing other parameters (eg urlbase) work fine. The SSL site is setup and direct requests to it eg https://foo.com/bugzilla work correctly. Any ideas? Ty

• Using Diskpart in a PowerShell script won't allow script to reuse drive letter

  I built a script that mounts (attach) a VHD using Diskpart, cleans out some system files and then unmounts (detach) it. It uses a foreach loop and is suppose to clean multiple VHD using the same drive letter. However, after the 1st VHD it fails. I also noticed that when I try to manually attach a VHD with diskpart, diskpart succeeds, the Disk Manager shows the disk with the correct drive letter, but within the same PoSH instance I can not connect (set-location) to that drive. If I do a manual diskpart when I 1st open PoSH I can attach and detach all I want and I get the drive letter every time. Is there something I need to do to reset diskpart in the script? • OpenVPN on Ubuntu 11.10 - unable to redirect default gateway

  I'm trying to connect to connect to OpenVPN server from my Ubuntu 11.10 machine. I use the following command to do it (under root user): openvpn --config /home/vladimir/client.ovpn Everything seems to be OK, it connects normally without any warnings and errors, but when I try to browse the internet I see that I still use my own IP address, so VPN connection doesn't work. • Tomcat cookies not working via my ProxyPass VirtualHost

  Hi there. I'm having some issues with getting cookies to work when using a ProxyPass to redirect traffic on port 80 to a web-application hosted via Tomcat. My motivation for enabling cookies is to get rid of the "jsessionid=" parameter that is appended to the URLs. I've enabled cookies in my context.xml in META-INF/ for my web application. When I access the webapplication via http://url:8080/webapp it works as expected, the jsessionid parameter is not visible in the URL, instead it's stored in a cookie. When accessing my website via an apache2 virtualhost the cookies doesn't seem to work because now "jsessionid" is being appended to the URLs. How can I solve this issue?   I have configured my linux machines (running CentOS 5.2) to authenticate against a Windows server running Active Directory. I have even enabled winbind offline logon. Everything works as expected, however I'm also looking to impose a TTL for the winbind authentication cache. So far all I found was the below snippet from the samba documentation winbind cache time (G) This parameter specifies the number of seconds the winbindd(8) daemon will cache user and group information before querying a Windows NT server again. **This does not apply to authentication requests**, these are always evaluated in real time unless the winbind offline logon option has been enabled. Default: winbind cache time = 300 Clearly the winbind cache time parameter does not control the cache TTL for authentication requests. Is there any other way I can implement a cache timeout for winbind authentication requests? Thank you

• Oracle tuning optimizer index cost adj and optimizer index caching

  What is the correct way to set the optimizer index cost adj parameter for Oracle. As a developer I have observed huge performance improvements as this parameter is lowered. Common queries are reduced from 2 seconds to 200ms. There are lots of warnings on the net that lowering this value will cause dire issues with the database, but no detail is given on what will start going wrong. I am currently only seeing only an upside, much improved application performance and no downside. I need to better understand the possible negative repercussions of adjusting these parameters.

  Hello, we're moving from Solaris to Redhat Linux, and trying to duplicate our low-latency setup, that, on solaris, includes the ndd settings related to TCP NO DELAY, and NAGLE ALGORITHM. I got the impression that those parameters are not all configurable system-wide, but still found some info. we have configured our applications to run with no nagle algorithm, but that is not sufficient. we have found an interesting RH article talking presenting the tcp_delack_min parameter, however, when browsing /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ , I can't find it there. would it be safe to assume that simply "adding" the parameter as it's said on the doc would be enough, or rather that the option is not supported by this version (would be strange, as RH specify that it "can be performed on a standard Red Hat Enterprise Linux installation") ? any other idea / recommendation to improve latency further ? thanks

Without depending much on application provider's expertise I want to achieve maximum o/p from linux. W.r.t. that I have certain questions as following: How to find out if there is scope for further tcp fine-tuning (without exhausting available resources) as the benchmark values given by vendor looks poor! Is there any parameter value that is available from OS / network stack that will show me the results. If at all there is scope, how shall I identify & configure OS tcp stack parameters i.e. using sysctl or any specific parameter Post tuning how shall I clearly measure performance enhancement / degradation ?

This takes too long, and I need an easier way. How can I create a shortcut that I can drop the file onto, and have it call the program with the command-line parameter? I tried setting the shortcut to program.exe -param "%1", but that didn't work, because it appeared to pass only the file name, and not the path, and since the current directory was the one with the program and not the one with the document, it couldn't find the document.

• How soon does nginx's token bucket replenish when limiting at requests per minute?

  Hi all. We've decided that we want to experiment and limit requests per minute instead of requests per second on our sites. However, I am confused by the burst parameter in this context. I am under the impression that when you use the 'nodelay' flag, the rate limiting facility acts like a token bucket instead of a leaky bucket. That being the case, the bucket size is equal to the burst parameter, and every time that you violate the policy (say 1 req/s), you have to put a token in the bucket. Once the bucket is full (being equal to the burst setting), you are given a 503 error page. I am also under the impression that once a violator stops going against the policy, a token is removed from the bucket at a rate of 1 token/s allowing him to regain access to the site. Assuming that I have the above correct, my question is what happens when I start regulating access per minute? If we chose 60 requests per minute, at what rate does the token bucket replenish?
