• IP addresses not listed for IIS website bindings

- by Svinn
Recently purchased a windows cloud server godaddy. Now i installed iis7 and all other required software. And i have 50.62.1.89 and 2 more public ips. Also i have a private ip 10.1.0.2. Now the problem is am unable to access any website through any public ip. All my public ips are opening default website only. also i cant see pubic ips for IIS website bindings. Only my private ip listed for IIS binding. And in my server also public opening only default website. But am able to open websites using private ip. But my public ip addresses pointed to my server correctly. am able to open my server using remote desktop using public ip. Also as i said already public ip opening default website from IIS without problem. Please help me. Am confused for last 2 days.

• Java constructor using generic types

- by user37903
I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around Java generic types. Here's a simple piece of code that in my mind should work, but I'm obviously doing something wrong. Eclipse reports this error in BreweryList.java: The method initBreweryFromObject() is undefined for the type <T> The idea is to fill a Vector with instances of objects that are a subclass of the Brewery class, so the invocation would be something like: BreweryList breweryList = new BreweryList(BrewerySubClass.class, list); BreweryList.java package com.beerme.test; import java.util.Vector; public class BreweryList<T extends Brewery> extends Vector<T> { public BreweryList(Class<T> c, Object[] j) { super(); for (int i = 0; i < j.length; i++) { T item = c.newInstance(); // initBreweryFromObject() is an instance method // of Brewery, of which <T> is a subclass (right?) c.initBreweryFromObject(); // "The method initBreweryFromObject() is undefined // for the type <T>" } } } Brewery.java package com.beerme.test; public class Brewery { public Brewery() { super(); } protected void breweryMethod() { } } BrewerySubClass.java package com.beerme.test; public class BrewerySubClass extends Brewery { public BrewerySubClass() { super(); } public void androidMethod() { } } I'm sure this is a complete-generics-noob question, but I'm stuck. Thanks for any tips!

• IPTables Reroute SSH based on Connection string?

- by senrabdet
We are using a cloud server (Debian Squeeze) where public ports on a public IP route traffic to internal servers. We are looking for a way to use IPTables and ssh where based on some part of the ssh connection string (or something along these lines) iptables will reroute the ssh connection to the "right" internal server. This would allow us to use one common public port, and then re-route ssh connections to individual servers. So, for example we hope to do something like the following: user issues ssh connection (public key encryption) such as ssh -X -v -p xxx [email protected] but maybe adds something into the string for iptables to use iptables uses some part of that string or some means to re-route the connection to an internal server using something like iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING ! -s xxx.xxx.xxx.0/24 -m tcp -p tcp --dport $EXTPORT -j DNAT --to-destination $HOST:$INTPORT ....where $HOST is the internal ip of a server, $EXTPORT is the common public facing port and $INTPORT is the internal server port. It appears that the "string" aspect of iptables does not do what we want. We can currently route based on the IP table syntax we're using, but rely on having a separate public port for each server and are hoping to use one common public port and then re-route to specific internal servers based on some part of the ssh connection string or some other means. Any suggestions? Thanks!

• Sending Messages to SignalR Hubs from the Outside

- by Ricardo Peres
Introduction You are by now probably familiarized with SignalR, Microsoft’s API for real-time web functionality. This is, in my opinion, one of the greatest products Microsoft has released in recent time. Usually, people login to a site and enter some page which is connected to a SignalR hub. Then they can send and receive messages – not just text messages, mind you – to other users in the same hub. Also, the server can also take the initiative to send messages to all or a specified subset of users on its own, this is known as server push. The normal flow is pretty straightforward, Microsoft has done a great job with the API, it’s clean and quite simple to use. And for the latter – the server taking the initiative – it’s also quite simple, just involves a little more work. The Problem The API for sending messages can be achieved from inside a hub – an instance of the Hub class – which is something that we don’t have if we are the server and we want to send a message to some user or group of users: the Hub instance is only instantiated in response to a client message. The Solution It is possible to acquire a hub’s context from outside of an actual Hub instance, by calling GlobalHost.ConnectionManager.GetHubContext<T>(). This API allows us to: Broadcast messages to all connected clients (possibly excluding some); Send messages to a specific client; Send messages to a group of clients. So, we have groups and clients, each is identified by a string. Client strings are called connection ids and group names are free-form, given by us. The problem with client strings is, we do not know how these map to actual users. One way to achieve this mapping is by overriding the Hub’s OnConnected and OnDisconnected methods and managing the association there. Here’s an example: 1: public class MyHub : Hub 2: { 3: private static readonly IDictionary<String, ISet<String>> users = new ConcurrentDictionary<String, ISet<String>>(); 4: 5: public static IEnumerable<String> GetUserConnections(String username) 6: { 7: ISet<String> connections; 8: 9: users.TryGetValue(username, out connections); 10: 11: return (connections ?? Enumerable.Empty<String>()); 12: } 13: 14: private static void AddUser(String username, String connectionId) 15: { 16: ISet<String> connections; 17: 18: if (users.TryGetValue(username, out connections) == false) 19: { 20: connections = users[username] = new HashSet<String>(); 21: } 22: 23: connections.Add(connectionId); 24: } 25: 26: private static void RemoveUser(String username, String connectionId) 27: { 28: users[username].Remove(connectionId); 29: } 30: 31: public override Task OnConnected() 32: { 33: AddUser(this.Context.Request.User.Identity.Name, this.Context.ConnectionId); 34: return (base.OnConnected()); 35: } 36: 37: public override Task OnDisconnected() 38: { 39: RemoveUser(this.Context.Request.User.Identity.Name, this.Context.ConnectionId); 40: return (base.OnDisconnected()); 41: } 42: } As you can see, I am using a static field to store the mapping between a user and its possibly many connections – for example, multiple open browser tabs or even multiple browsers accessing the same page with the same login credentials. The user identity, as is normal in .NET, is obtained from the IPrincipal which in SignalR hubs case is stored in Context.Request.User. Of course, this property will only have a meaningful value if we enforce authentication. Another way to go is by creating a group for each user that connects: 1: public class MyHub : Hub 2: { 3: public override Task OnConnected() 4: { 5: this.Groups.Add(this.Context.ConnectionId, this.Context.Request.User.Identity.Name); 6: return (base.OnConnected()); 7: } 8: 9: public override Task OnDisconnected() 10: { 11: this.Groups.Remove(this.Context.ConnectionId, this.Context.Request.User.Identity.Name); 12: return (base.OnDisconnected()); 13: } 14: } In this case, we will have a one-to-one equivalence between users and groups. All connections belonging to the same user will fall in the same group. So, if we want to send messages to a user from outside an instance of the Hub class, we can do something like this, for the first option – user mappings stored in a static field: 1: public void SendUserMessage(String username, String message) 2: { 3: var context = GlobalHost.ConnectionManager.GetHubContext<MyHub>(); 4: 5: foreach (String connectionId in HelloHub.GetUserConnections(username)) 6: { 7: context.Clients.Client(connectionId).sendUserMessage(message); 8: } 9: } And for using groups, its even simpler: 1: public void SendUserMessage(String username, String message) 2: { 3: var context = GlobalHost.ConnectionManager.GetHubContext<MyHub>(); 4: 5: context.Clients.Group(username).sendUserMessage(message); 6: } Using groups has the advantage that the IHubContext interface returned from GetHubContext has direct support for groups, no need to send messages to individual connections. Of course, you can wrap both mapping options in a common API, perhaps exposed through IoC. One example of its interface might be: 1: public interface IUserToConnectionMappingService 2: { 3: //associate and dissociate connections to users 4: 5: void AddUserConnection(String username, String connectionId); 6: 7: void RemoveUserConnection(String username, String connectionId); 8: } SignalR has built-in dependency resolution, by means of the static GlobalHost.DependencyResolver property: 1: //for using groups (in the Global class) 2: GlobalHost.DependencyResolver.Register(typeof(IUserToConnectionMappingService), () => new GroupsMappingService()); 3: 4: //for using a static field (in the Global class) 5: GlobalHost.DependencyResolver.Register(typeof(IUserToConnectionMappingService), () => new StaticMappingService()); 6: 7: //retrieving the current service (in the Hub class) 8: var mapping = GlobalHost.DependencyResolver.Resolve<IUserToConnectionMappingService>(); Now all you have to do is implement GroupsMappingService and StaticMappingService with the code I shown here and change SendUserMessage method to rely in the dependency resolver for the actual implementation. Stay tuned for more SignalR posts!

• Using Unity – Part 2

- by nmarun
In the first part of this series, we created a simple project and learned how to implement IoC pattern using Unity. In this one, I’ll show how you can instantiate other types that implement our IProduct interface. One place where this one would want to use this feature is to create mock types for testing purposes. Alright, let’s dig in. I added another class – Product2.cs  to the ProductModel project. 1: public class Product2 : IProduct 2: { 3: public string Name { get; set;} 4: public Category Category { get; set; } 5: public DateTime MfgDate { get;set; } 6:  7: public Product2() 8: { 9: Name = "Canon Digital Rebel XTi"; 10: Category = new Category {Name = "Electronics", SubCategoryName = "Digital Cameras"}; 11: MfgDate = DateTime.Now; 12: } 13:  14: public string WriteProductDetails() 15: { 16: return string.Format("Name: {0}
Category: {1}
Mfg Date: {2}", 17: Name, Category, MfgDate.ToShortDateString()); 18: } 19: } Highlights of this class are that it implements IProduct interface and it has some different properties than the Product class. The Category class looks like below: 1: public class Category 2: { 3: public string Name { get; set; } 4: public string SubCategoryName { get; set; } 5: 6: public override string ToString() 7: { 8: return string.Format("{0} - {1}", Name, SubCategoryName); 9: } 10: } We’ll go to our web.config file to add the configuration information about this new class – Product2 that we created. Let’s first add a typeAlias element. 1: <typeAlias alias="Product2" type="ProductModel.Product2, ProductModel"/> That’s all that is needed for us to get an instance of Product2 in our application. I have a new button added to the .aspx page and the click event of this button is where all the magic happens: 1: private IUnityContainer unityContainer; 2: protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) 3: { 4: unityContainer = Application["UnityContainer"] as IUnityContainer; 5: 6: if (unityContainer == null) 7: { 8: productDetailsLabel.Text = "ERROR: Unity Container not populated in Global.asax.
"; 9: } 10: else 11: { 12: if (!IsPostBack) 13: { 14: IProduct productInstance = unityContainer.Resolve<IProduct>(); 15: productDetailsLabel.Text = productInstance.WriteProductDetails(); 16: } 17: } 18: } 19:  20: protected void Product2Button_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) 21: { 22: unityContainer.RegisterType<IProduct, Product2>(); 23: IProduct product2Instance = unityContainer.Resolve<IProduct>(); 24: productDetailsLabel.Text = product2Instance.WriteProductDetails(); 25: } The unityContainer instance is set in the Page_Load event. Line 22 in the click event of the Product2Button registers a type mapping in the container. In English, this means that when unityContainer tries to resolve for IProduct, it gets an instance of Product2. Once this code runs, following output is rendered: There’s another way of doing this. You can resolve an instance of the requested type with a name from the container. We’ll have to update the container element of our web.config file to include the following: 1: <container name="unityContainer"> 2: <types> 3: <type type="IProduct" mapTo="Product"/> 4:  5: <type type="IProduct" mapTo="Product" name="LegacyProduct" /> 6:  7: <type type="IProduct" mapTo="Product2" name="NewProduct" /> 8: </types> 9: </container> I’ve added a Dropdownlist and a button to the design page: 1: <asp:DropDownList ID="ModelTypesList" runat="server"> 2: <asp:ListItem Text="Legacy Product" Value="LegacyProduct" /> 3: <asp:ListItem Text="New Product" Value="NewProduct" /> 4: </asp:DropDownList> 5:
6: <asp:Button ID="SelectedModelButton" Text="Get Selected Instance" runat="server" 7: onclick="SelectedModelButton_Click" /> 1: protected void SelectedModelButton_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) 2: { 3: // get the selected value: LegacyProduct or NewProduct 4: string modelType = ModelTypesList.SelectedValue; 5: // pass the modelType to the Resolve method 6: IProduct customModel = unityContainer.Resolve<IProduct>(modelType); 7: productDetailsLabel.Text = customModel.WriteProductDetails(); 8: } Pretty straight forward right? The only thing to note here is that the values in the dropdownlist item need to match the name attribute of the type. Depending on what you select, you’ll get an instance of either the Product class or the Product2 class and the corresponding WriteProductDetails() method is called. Now you see, how either of these methods can be used to create mock objects your the test project. See the code here. I’ll continue to share more of Unity in the next blog.

• Interface contracts – forcing code contracts through interfaces

- by DigiMortal
Sometimes we need a way to make different implementations of same interface follow same rules. One option is to duplicate contracts to all implementation but this is not good option because we have duplicated code then. The other option is to force contracts to all implementations at interface level. In this posting I will show you how to do it using interface contracts and contracts class. Using code from previous example about unit testing code with code contracts I will go further and force contracts at interface level. Here is the code from previous example. Take a careful look at it because I will talk about some modifications to this code soon. public interface IRandomGenerator { int Next(int min, int max); } public class RandomGenerator : IRandomGenerator { private Random _random = new Random(); public int Next(int min, int max) { return _random.Next(min, max); } } public class Randomizer { private IRandomGenerator _generator; private Randomizer() { _generator = new RandomGenerator(); } public Randomizer(IRandomGenerator generator) { _generator = generator; } public int GetRandomFromRangeContracted(int min, int max) { Contract.Requires<ArgumentOutOfRangeException>( min < max, "Min must be less than max" ); Contract.Ensures( Contract.Result<int>() >= min && Contract.Result<int>() <= max, "Return value is out of range" ); return _generator.Next(min, max); } } If we look at the GetRandomFromRangeContracted() method we can see that contracts set in this method are applicable to all implementations of IRandomGenerator interface. Although we can write new implementations as we want these implementations need exactly the same contracts. If we are using generators somewhere else then code contracts are not with them anymore. To solve the problem we will force code contracts at interface level. NB! To make the following code work you must enable Contract Reference Assembly building from project settings. Interface contracts and contracts class Interface contains no code – only definitions of members that implementing type must have. But code contracts must be defined in body of member they are part of. To get over this limitation, code contracts are defined in separate contracts class. Interface is bound to this class by special attribute and contracts class refers to interface through special attribute. Here is the IRandomGenerator with contracts and contracts class. Also I write simple fake so we can test contracts easily based only on interface mock. [ContractClass(typeof(RandomGeneratorContracts))] public interface IRandomGenerator { int Next(int min, int max); } [ContractClassFor(typeof(IRandomGenerator))] internal sealed class RandomGeneratorContracts : IRandomGenerator { int IRandomGenerator.Next(int min, int max) { Contract.Requires<ArgumentOutOfRangeException>( min < max, "Min must be less than max" ); Contract.Ensures( Contract.Result<int>() >= min && Contract.Result<int>() <= max, "Return value is out of range" ); return default(int); } } public class RandomFake : IRandomGenerator { private int _testValue; public RandomGen(int testValue) { _testValue = testValue; } public int Next(int min, int max) { return _testValue; } } To try out these changes use the following code. var gen = new RandomFake(3); try { gen.Next(10, 1); } catch(Exception ex) { Debug.WriteLine(ex.Message); } try { gen.Next(5, 10); } catch(Exception ex) { Debug.WriteLine(ex.Message); } Now we can force code contracts to all types that implement our IRandomGenerator interface and we must test only the interface to make sure that contracts are defined correctly.

• Routing Issue in ASP.NET MVC 3 RC 2

- by imran_ku07
Introduction: Two weeks ago, ASP.NET MVC team shipped the ASP.NET MVC 3 RC 2 release. This release includes some new features and some performance optimization. This release also fixes most of the bugs but still some minor issues are present in this release. Some of these issues are already discussed by Scott Guthrie at Update on ASP.NET MVC 3 RC2 (and a workaround for a bug in it). In addition to these issues, I have found another issue in this release regarding routing. In this article, I will show you the issue regarding routing and a simple workaround for this issue. Description: The easiest way to understand an issue is to reproduce it in the application. So create a MVC 2 application and a MVC 3 RC 2 application. Then in both applications, just open global.asax file and update the default route as below, routes.IgnoreRoute("{resource}.axd/{*pathInfo}"); routes.MapRoute( "Default", // Route name "{controller}/{action}/{id1}/{id2}", // URL with parameters new { controller = "Home", action = "Index", id1 = UrlParameter.Optional, id2 = UrlParameter.Optional } // Parameter defaults ); Then just open Index View and add the following lines, <%@ Page Language="C#" MasterPageFile="~/Views/Shared/Site.Master" Inherits="System.Web.Mvc.ViewPage" %> <asp:Content ID="Content1" ContentPlaceHolderID="TitleContent" runat="server"> Home Page </asp:Content> <asp:Content ID="Content2" ContentPlaceHolderID="MainContent" runat="server"> <% Html.RenderAction("About"); %> </asp:Content> The above view will issue a child request to About action method. Now run both applications. ASP.NET MVC 2 application will run just fine. But ASP.NET MVC 3 RC 2 application will throw an exception as shown below, You may think that this is a routing issue but this is not the case here as both ASP.NET MVC 2 and ASP.NET MVC 3 RC 2 applications(created above) are built with .NET Framework 4.0 and both will use the same routing defined in System.Web. Something is wrong in ASP.NET MVC 3 RC 2. So after digging into ASP.NET MVC source code, I have found that the UrlParameter class in ASP.NET MVC 3 RC 2 overrides the ToString method which simply return an empty string. public sealed class UrlParameter { public static readonly UrlParameter Optional = new UrlParameter(); private UrlParameter() { } public override string ToString() { return string.Empty; } } In MVC 2 the ToString method was not overridden. So to quickly fix the above problem just replace UrlParameter.Optional default value with a different value other than null or empty(for example, a single white space) or replace UrlParameter.Optional default value with a new class object containing the same code as UrlParameter class have except the ToString method is not overridden (or with a overridden ToString method that return a string value other than null or empty). But by doing this you will loose the benefit of ASP.NET MVC 2 Optional URL Parameters. There may be many different ways to fix the above problem and not loose the benefit of optional parameters. Here I will create a new class MyUrlParameter with the same code as UrlParameter class have except the ToString method is not overridden. Then I will create a base controller class which contains a constructor to remove all MyUrlParameter route data parameters, same like ASP.NET MVC doing with UrlParameter route data parameters early in the request. public class BaseController : Controller { public BaseController() { if (System.Web.HttpContext.Current.CurrentHandler is MvcHandler) { RouteValueDictionary rvd = ((MvcHandler)System.Web.HttpContext.Current.CurrentHandler).RequestContext.RouteData.Values; string[] matchingKeys = (from entry in rvd where entry.Value == MyUrlParameter.Optional select entry.Key).ToArray(); foreach (string key in matchingKeys) { rvd.Remove(key); } } } } public class HomeController : BaseController { public ActionResult Index(string id1) { ViewBag.Message = "Welcome to ASP.NET MVC!"; return View(); } public ActionResult About() { return Content("Child Request Contents"); } } public sealed class MyUrlParameter { public static readonly MyUrlParameter Optional = new MyUrlParameter(); private MyUrlParameter() { } } routes.IgnoreRoute("{resource}.axd/{*pathInfo}"); routes.MapRoute( "Default", // Route name "{controller}/{action}/{id1}/{id2}", // URL with parameters new { controller = "Home", action = "Index", id1 = MyUrlParameter.Optional, id2 = MyUrlParameter.Optional } // Parameter defaults ); MyUrlParameter class is a copy of UrlParameter class except that MyUrlParameter class not overrides the ToString method. Note that the default route is modified to use MyUrlParameter.Optional instead of UrlParameter.Optional. Also note that BaseController class constructor is removing MyUrlParameter parameters from the current request route data so that the model binder will not bind these parameters with action method parameters. Now just run the ASP.NET MVC 3 RC 2 application again, you will find that it runs just fine. In case if you are curious to know that why ASP.NET MVC 3 RC 2 application throws an exception if UrlParameter class contains a ToString method which returns an empty string, then you need to know something about a feature of routing for url generation. During url generation, routing will call the ParsedRoute.Bind method internally. This method includes a logic to match the route and build the url. During building the url, ParsedRoute.Bind method will call the ToString method of the route values(in our case this will call the UrlParameter.ToString method) and then append the returned value into url. This method includes a logic after appending the returned value into url that if two continuous returned values are empty then don't match the current route otherwise an incorrect url will be generated. Here is the snippet from ParsedRoute.Bind method which will prove this statement. if ((builder2.Length > 0) && (builder2[builder2.Length - 1] == '/')) { return null; } builder2.Append("/"); ........................................................... ........................................................... ........................................................... ........................................................... if (RoutePartsEqual(obj3, obj4)) { builder2.Append(UrlEncode(Convert.ToString(obj3, CultureInfo.InvariantCulture))); continue; } In the above example, both id1 and id2 parameters default values are set to UrlParameter object and UrlParameter class include a ToString method that returns an empty string. That's why this route will not matched. Summary: In this article I showed you the issue regarding routing and also showed you how to workaround this problem. I explained this issue with an example by creating a ASP.NET MVC 2 and a ASP.NET MVC 3 RC 2 application. Finally I also explained the reason for this issue. Hopefully you will enjoy this article too. SyntaxHighlighter.all()

• C#: Does an IDisposable in a Halted Iterator Dispose?

- by James Michael Hare
If that sounds confusing, let me give you an example. Let's say you expose a method to read a database of products, and instead of returning a List<Product> you return an IEnumerable<Product> in iterator form (yield return). This accomplishes several good things: The IDataReader is not passed out of the Data Access Layer which prevents abstraction leak and resource leak potentials. You don't need to construct a full List<Product> in memory (which could be very big) if you just want to forward iterate once. If you only want to consume up to a certain point in the list, you won't incur the database cost of looking up the other items. This could give us an example like: 1: // a sample data access object class to do standard CRUD operations. 2: public class ProductDao 3: { 4: private DbProviderFactory _factory = SqlClientFactory.Instance 5: 6: // a method that would retrieve all available products 7: public IEnumerable<Product> GetAvailableProducts() 8: { 9: // must create the connection 10: using (var con = _factory.CreateConnection()) 11: { 12: con.ConnectionString = _productsConnectionString; 13: con.Open(); 14: 15: // create the command 16: using (var cmd = _factory.CreateCommand()) 17: { 18: cmd.Connection = con; 19: cmd.CommandText = _getAllProductsStoredProc; 20: cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure; 21: 22: // get a reader and pass back all results 23: using (var reader = cmd.ExecuteReader()) 24: { 25: while(reader.Read()) 26: { 27: yield return new Product 28: { 29: Name = reader["product_name"].ToString(), 30: ... 31: }; 32: } 33: } 34: } 35: } 36: } 37: } The database details themselves are irrelevant. I will say, though, that I'm a big fan of using the System.Data.Common classes instead of your provider specific counterparts directly (SqlCommand, OracleCommand, etc). This lets you mock your data sources easily in unit testing and also allows you to swap out your provider in one line of code. In fact, one of the shared components I'm most proud of implementing was our group's DatabaseUtility library that simplifies all the database access above into one line of code in a thread-safe and provider-neutral way. I went with my own flavor instead of the EL due to the fact I didn't want to force internal company consumers to use the EL if they didn't want to, and it made it easy to allow them to mock their database for unit testing by providing a MockCommand, MockConnection, etc that followed the System.Data.Common model. One of these days I'll blog on that if anyone's interested. Regardless, you often have situations like the above where you are consuming and iterating through a resource that must be closed once you are finished iterating. For the reasons stated above, I didn't want to return IDataReader (that would force them to remember to Dispose it), and I didn't want to return List<Product> (that would force them to hold all products in memory) -- but the first time I wrote this, I was worried. What if you never consume the last item and exit the loop? Are the reader, command, and connection all disposed correctly? Of course, I was 99.999999% sure the creators of C# had already thought of this and taken care of it, but inspection in Reflector was difficult due to the nature of the state machines yield return generates, so I decided to try a quick example program to verify whether or not Dispose() will be called when an iterator is broken from outside the iterator itself -- i.e. before the iterator reports there are no more items. So I wrote a quick Sequencer class with a Dispose() method and an iterator for it. Yes, it is COMPLETELY contrived: 1: // A disposable sequence of int -- yes this is completely contrived... 2: internal class Sequencer : IDisposable 3: { 4: private int _i = 0; 5: private readonly object _mutex = new object(); 6: 7: // Constructs an int sequence. 8: public Sequencer(int start) 9: { 10: _i = start; 11: } 12: 13: // Gets the next integer 14: public int GetNext() 15: { 16: lock (_mutex) 17: { 18: return _i++; 19: } 20: } 21: 22: // Dispose the sequence of integers. 23: public void Dispose() 24: { 25: // force output immediately (flush the buffer) 26: Console.WriteLine("Disposed with last sequence number of {0}!", _i); 27: Console.Out.Flush(); 28: } 29: } And then I created a generator (infinite-loop iterator) that did the using block for auto-Disposal: 1: // simply defines an extension method off of an int to start a sequence 2: public static class SequencerExtensions 3: { 4: // generates an infinite sequence starting at the specified number 5: public static IEnumerable<int> GetSequence(this int starter) 6: { 7: // note the using here, will call Dispose() when block terminated. 8: using (var seq = new Sequencer(starter)) 9: { 10: // infinite loop on this generator, means must be bounded by caller! 11: while(true) 12: { 13: yield return seq.GetNext(); 14: } 15: } 16: } 17: } This is really the same conundrum as the database problem originally posed. Here we are using iteration (yield return) over a large collection (infinite sequence of integers). If we cut the sequence short by breaking iteration, will that using block exit and hence, Dispose be called? Well, let's see: 1: // The test program class 2: public class IteratorTest 3: { 4: // The main test method. 5: public static void Main() 6: { 7: Console.WriteLine("Going to consume 10 of infinite items"); 8: Console.Out.Flush(); 9: 10: foreach(var i in 0.GetSequence()) 11: { 12: // could use TakeWhile, but wanted to output right at break... 13: if(i >= 10) 14: { 15: Console.WriteLine("Breaking now!"); 16: Console.Out.Flush(); 17: break; 18: } 19: 20: Console.WriteLine(i); 21: Console.Out.Flush(); 22: } 23: 24: Console.WriteLine("Done with loop."); 25: Console.Out.Flush(); 26: } 27: } So, what do we see? Do we see the "Disposed" message from our dispose, or did the Dispose get skipped because from an "eyeball" perspective we should be locked in that infinite generator loop? Here's the results: 1: Going to consume 10 of infinite items 2: 0 3: 1 4: 2 5: 3 6: 4 7: 5 8: 6 9: 7 10: 8 11: 9 12: Breaking now! 13: Disposed with last sequence number of 11! 14: Done with loop. Yes indeed, when we break the loop, the state machine that C# generates for yield iterate exits the iteration through the using blocks and auto-disposes the IDisposable correctly. I must admit, though, the first time I wrote one, I began to wonder and that led to this test. If you've never seen iterators before (I wrote a previous entry here) the infinite loop may throw you, but you have to keep in mind it is not a linear piece of code, that every time you hit a "yield return" it cedes control back to the state machine generated for the iterator. And this state machine, I'm happy to say, is smart enough to clean up the using blocks correctly. I suspected those wily guys and gals at Microsoft engineered it well, and I wasn't disappointed. But, I've been bitten by assumptions before, so it's good to test and see. Yes, maybe you knew it would or figured it would, but isn't it nice to know? And as those campy 80s G.I. Joe cartoon public service reminders always taught us, "Knowing is half the battle...". Technorati Tags: C#,.NET

• C# Extension Methods - To Extend or Not To Extend...

- by James Michael Hare
I've been thinking a lot about extension methods lately, and I must admit I both love them and hate them. They are a lot like sugar, they taste so nice and sweet, but they'll rot your teeth if you eat them too much. I can't deny that they aren't useful and very handy. One of the major components of the Shared Component library where I work is a set of useful extension methods. But, I also can't deny that they tend to be overused and abused to willy-nilly extend every living type. So what constitutes a good extension method? Obviously, you can write an extension method for nearly anything whether it is a good idea or not. Many times, in fact, an idea seems like a good extension method but in retrospect really doesn't fit. So what's the litmus test? To me, an extension method should be like in the movies when a person runs into their twin, separated at birth. You just know you're related. Obviously, that's hard to quantify, so let's try to put a few rules-of-thumb around them. A good extension method should: Apply to any possible instance of the type it extends. Simplify logic and improve readability/maintainability. Apply to the most specific type or interface applicable. Be isolated in a namespace so that it does not pollute IntelliSense. So let's look at a few examples in relation to these rules. The first rule, to me, is the most important of all. Once again, it bears repeating, a good extension method should apply to all possible instances of the type it extends. It should feel like the long lost relative that should have been included in the original class but somehow was missing from the family tree. Take this nifty little int extension, I saw this once in a blog and at first I really thought it was pretty cool, but then I started noticing a code smell I couldn't quite put my finger on. So let's look: public static class IntExtensinos { public static int Seconds(int num) { return num * 1000; } public static int Minutes(int num) { return num * 60000; } } This is so you could do things like: ... Thread.Sleep(5.Seconds()); ... proxy.Timeout = 1.Minutes(); ... Awww, you say, that's cute! Well, that's the problem, it's kitschy and it doesn't always apply (and incidentally you could achieve the same thing with TimeStamp.FromSeconds(5)). It's syntactical candy that looks cool, but tends to rot and pollute the code. It would allow things like: total += numberOfTodaysOrders.Seconds(); which makes no sense and should never be allowed. The problem is you're applying an extension method to a logical domain, not a type domain. That is, the extension method Seconds() doesn't really apply to ALL ints, it applies to ints that are representative of time that you want to convert to milliseconds. Do you see what I mean? The two problems, in a nutshell, are that a) Seconds() called off a non-time value makes no sense and b) calling Seconds() off something to pass to something that does not take milliseconds will be off by a factor of 1000 or worse. Thus, in my mind, you should only ever have an extension method that applies to the whole domain of that type. For example, this is one of my personal favorites: public static bool IsBetween<T>(this T value, T low, T high) where T : IComparable<T> { return value.CompareTo(low) >= 0 && value.CompareTo(high) <= 0; } This allows you to check if any IComparable<T> is within an upper and lower bound. Think of how many times you type something like: if (response.Employee.Address.YearsAt >= 2 && response.Employee.Address.YearsAt <= 10) { ... } Now, you can instead type: if(response.Employee.Address.YearsAt.IsBetween(2, 10)) { ... } Note that this applies to all IComparable<T> -- that's ints, chars, strings, DateTime, etc -- and does not depend on any logical domain. In addition, it satisfies the second point and actually makes the code more readable and maintainable. Let's look at the third point. In it we said that an extension method should fit the most specific interface or type possible. Now, I'm not saying if you have something that applies to enumerables, you create an extension for List, Array, Dictionary, etc (though you may have reasons for doing so), but that you should beware of making things TOO general. For example, let's say we had an extension method like this: public static T ConvertTo<T>(this object value) { return (T)Convert.ChangeType(value, typeof(T)); } This lets you do more fluent conversions like: double d = "5.0".ConvertTo<double>(); However, if you dig into Reflector (LOVE that tool) you will see that if the type you are calling on does not implement IConvertible, what you convert to MUST be the exact type or it will throw an InvalidCastException. Now this may or may not be what you want in this situation, and I leave that up to you. Things like this would fail: object value = new Employee(); ... // class cast exception because typeof(IEmployee) != typeof(Employee) IEmployee emp = value.ConvertTo<IEmployee>(); Yes, that's a downfall of working with Convertible in general, but if you wanted your fluent interface to be more type-safe so that ConvertTo were only callable on IConvertibles (and let casting be a manual task), you could easily make it: public static T ConvertTo<T>(this IConvertible value) { return (T)Convert.ChangeType(value, typeof(T)); } This is what I mean by choosing the best type to extend. Consider that if we used the previous (object) version, every time we typed a dot ('.') on an instance we'd pull up ConvertTo() whether it was applicable or not. By filtering our extension method down to only valid types (those that implement IConvertible) we greatly reduce our IntelliSense pollution and apply a good level of compile-time correctness. Now my fourth rule is just my general rule-of-thumb. Obviously, you can make extension methods as in-your-face as you want. I included all mine in my work libraries in its own sub-namespace, something akin to: namespace Shared.Core.Extensions { ... } This is in a library called Shared.Core, so just referencing the Core library doesn't pollute your IntelliSense, you have to actually do a using on Shared.Core.Extensions to bring the methods in. This is very similar to the way Microsoft puts its extension methods in System.Linq. This way, if you want 'em, you use the appropriate namespace. If you don't want 'em, they won't pollute your namespace. To really make this work, however, that namespace should only include extension methods and subordinate types those extensions themselves may use. If you plant other useful classes in those namespaces, once a user includes it, they get all the extensions too. Also, just as a personal preference, extension methods that aren't simply syntactical shortcuts, I like to put in a static utility class and then have extension methods for syntactical candy. For instance, I think it imaginable that any object could be converted to XML: namespace Shared.Core { // A collection of XML Utility classes public static class XmlUtility { ... // Serialize an object into an xml string public static string ToXml(object input) { var xs = new XmlSerializer(input.GetType()); // use new UTF8Encoding here, not Encoding.UTF8. The later includes // the BOM which screws up subsequent reads, the former does not. using (var memoryStream = new MemoryStream()) using (var xmlTextWriter = new XmlTextWriter(memoryStream, new UTF8Encoding())) { xs.Serialize(xmlTextWriter, input); return Encoding.UTF8.GetString(memoryStream.ToArray()); } } ... } } I also wanted to be able to call this from an object like: value.ToXml(); But here's the problem, if i made this an extension method from the start with that one little keyword "this", it would pop into IntelliSense for all objects which could be very polluting. Instead, I put the logic into a utility class so that users have the choice of whether or not they want to use it as just a class and not pollute IntelliSense, then in my extensions namespace, I add the syntactical candy: namespace Shared.Core.Extensions { public static class XmlExtensions { public static string ToXml(this object value) { return XmlUtility.ToXml(value); } } } So now it's the best of both worlds. On one hand, they can use the utility class if they don't want to pollute IntelliSense, and on the other hand they can include the Extensions namespace and use as an extension if they want. The neat thing is it also adheres to the Single Responsibility Principle. The XmlUtility is responsible for converting objects to XML, and the XmlExtensions is responsible for extending object's interface for ToXml().

• ASP.NET MVC 3 Hosting :: Error Handling and CustomErrors in ASP.NET MVC 3 Framework

- by C. Miller
So, what else is new in MVC 3? MVC 3 now has a GlobalFilterCollection that is automatically populated with a HandleErrorAttribute. This default FilterAttribute brings with it a new way of handling errors in your web applications. In short, you can now handle errors inside of the MVC pipeline. What does that mean? This gives you direct programmatic control over handling your 500 errors in the same way that ASP.NET and CustomErrors give you configurable control of handling your HTTP error codes. How does that work out? Think of it as a routing table specifically for your Exceptions, it's pretty sweet! Global Filters The new Global.asax file now has a RegisterGlobalFilters method that is used to add filters to the new GlobalFilterCollection, statically located at System.Web.Mvc.GlobalFilter.Filters. By default this method adds one filter, the HandleErrorAttribute. public class MvcApplication : System.Web.HttpApplication {     public static void RegisterGlobalFilters(GlobalFilterCollection filters)     {         filters.Add(new HandleErrorAttribute());     } HandleErrorAttributes The HandleErrorAttribute is pretty simple in concept: MVC has already adjusted us to using Filter attributes for our AcceptVerbs and RequiresAuthorization, now we are going to use them for (as the name implies) error handling, and we are going to do so on a (also as the name implies) global scale. The HandleErrorAttribute has properties for ExceptionType, View, and Master. The ExceptionType allows you to specify what exception that attribute should handle. The View allows you to specify which error view (page) you want it to redirect to. Last but not least, the Master allows you to control which master page (or as Razor refers to them, Layout) you want to render with, even if that means overriding the default layout specified in the view itself. public class MvcApplication : System.Web.HttpApplication {     public static void RegisterGlobalFilters(GlobalFilterCollection filters)     {         filters.Add(new HandleErrorAttribute         {             ExceptionType = typeof(DbException),             // DbError.cshtml is a view in the Shared folder.             View = "DbError",             Order = 2         });         filters.Add(new HandleErrorAttribute());     }Error Views All of your views still work like they did in the previous version of MVC (except of course that they can now use the Razor engine). However, a view that is used to render an error can not have a specified model! This is because they already have a model, and that is System.Web.Mvc.HandleErrorInfo @model System.Web.Mvc.HandleErrorInfo           @{     ViewBag.Title = "DbError"; }
A Database Error Has Occurred
@if (Model != null) {
@Model.Exception.GetType().Name
thrown in @Model.ControllerName @Model.ActionName
}Errors Outside of the MVC Pipeline The HandleErrorAttribute will only handle errors that happen inside of the MVC pipeline, better known as 500 errors. Errors outside of the MVC pipeline are still handled the way they have always been with ASP.NET. You turn on custom errors, specify error codes and paths to error pages, etc. It is important to remember that these will happen for anything and everything outside of what the HandleErrorAttribute handles. Also, these will happen whenever an error is not handled with the HandleErrorAttribute from inside of the pipeline. <system.web> <customErrors mode="On" defaultRedirect="~/error"> <error statusCode="404" redirect="~/error/notfound"></error> </customErrors>Sample Controllers public class ExampleController : Controller { public ActionResult Exception() { throw new ArgumentNullException(); } public ActionResult Db() { // Inherits from DbException throw new MyDbException(); } } public class ErrorController : Controller { public ActionResult Index() { return View(); } public ActionResult NotFound() { return View(); } } Putting It All Together If we have all the code above included in our MVC 3 project, here is how the following scenario's will play out: 1. A controller action throws an Exception. You will remain on the current page and the global HandleErrorAttributes will render the Error view. 2. A controller action throws any type of DbException. You will remain on the current page and the global HandleErrorAttributes will render the DbError view. 3. Go to a non-existent page. You will be redirect to the Error controller's NotFound action by the CustomErrors configuration for HTTP StatusCode 404. But don't take my word for it, download the sample project and try it yourself. Three Important Lessons Learned For the most part this is all pretty straight forward, but there are a few gotcha's that you should remember to watch out for: 1) Error views have models, but they must be of type HandleErrorInfo. It is confusing at first to think that you can't control the M in an MVC page, but it's for a good reason. Errors can come from any action in any controller, and no redirect is taking place, so the view engine is just going to render an error view with the only data it has: The HandleError Info model. Do not try to set the model on your error page or pass in a different object through a controller action, it will just blow up and cause a second exception after your first exception! 2) When the HandleErrorAttribute renders a page, it does not pass through a controller or an action. The standard web.config CustomErrors literally redirect a failed request to a new page. The HandleErrorAttribute is just rendering a view, so it is not going to pass through a controller action. But that's ok! Remember, a controller's job is to get the model for a view, but an error already has a model ready to give to the view, thus there is no need to pass through a controller. That being said, the normal ASP.NET custom errors still need to route through controllers. So if you want to share an error page between the HandleErrorAttribute and your web.config redirects, you will need to create a controller action and route for it. But then when you render that error view from your action, you can only use the HandlerErrorInfo model or ViewData dictionary to populate your page. 3) The HandleErrorAttribute obeys if CustomErrors are on or off, but does not use their redirects. If you turn CustomErrors off in your web.config, the HandleErrorAttributes will stop handling errors. However, that is the only configuration these two mechanisms share. The HandleErrorAttribute will not use your defaultRedirect property, or any other errors registered with customer errors. In Summary The HandleErrorAttribute is for displaying 500 errors that were caused by exceptions inside of the MVC pipeline. The custom errors are for redirecting from error pages caused by other HTTP codes.

• Reasoner Conversion Problems:

- by Annalyne
I have this code right here in Java and I wanted to translate it in C++, but I had some problems going: this is the java code: import java.io.*; import java.util.*; public class ClueReasoner { private int numPlayers; private int playerNum; private int numCards; private SATSolver solver; private String caseFile = "cf"; private String[] players = {"sc", "mu", "wh", "gr", "pe", "pl"}; private String[] suspects = {"mu", "pl", "gr", "pe", "sc", "wh"}; private String[] weapons = {"kn", "ca", "re", "ro", "pi", "wr"}; private String[] rooms = {"ha", "lo", "di", "ki", "ba", "co", "bi", "li", "st"}; private String[] cards; public ClueReasoner() { numPlayers = players.length; // Initialize card info cards = new String[suspects.length + weapons.length + rooms.length]; int i = 0; for (String card : suspects) cards[i++] = card; for (String card : weapons) cards[i++] = card; for (String card : rooms) cards[i++] = card; numCards = i; // Initialize solver solver = new SATSolver(); addInitialClauses(); } private int getPlayerNum(String player) { if (player.equals(caseFile)) return numPlayers; for (int i = 0; i < numPlayers; i++) if (player.equals(players[i])) return i; System.out.println("Illegal player: " + player); return -1; } private int getCardNum(String card) { for (int i = 0; i < numCards; i++) if (card.equals(cards[i])) return i; System.out.println("Illegal card: " + card); return -1; } private int getPairNum(String player, String card) { return getPairNum(getPlayerNum(player), getCardNum(card)); } private int getPairNum(int playerNum, int cardNum) { return playerNum * numCards + cardNum + 1; } public void addInitialClauses() { // TO BE IMPLEMENTED AS AN EXERCISE // Each card is in at least one place (including case file). for (int c = 0; c < numCards; c++) { int[] clause = new int[numPlayers + 1]; for (int p = 0; p <= numPlayers; p++) clause[p] = getPairNum(p, c); solver.addClause(clause); } // If a card is one place, it cannot be in another place. // At least one card of each category is in the case file. // No two cards in each category can both be in the case file. } public void hand(String player, String[] cards) { playerNum = getPlayerNum(player); // TO BE IMPLEMENTED AS AN EXERCISE } public void suggest(String suggester, String card1, String card2, String card3, String refuter, String cardShown) { // TO BE IMPLEMENTED AS AN EXERCISE } public void accuse(String accuser, String card1, String card2, String card3, boolean isCorrect) { // TO BE IMPLEMENTED AS AN EXERCISE } public int query(String player, String card) { return solver.testLiteral(getPairNum(player, card)); } public String queryString(int returnCode) { if (returnCode == SATSolver.TRUE) return "Y"; else if (returnCode == SATSolver.FALSE) return "n"; else return "-"; } public void printNotepad() { PrintStream out = System.out; for (String player : players) out.print("\t" + player); out.println("\t" + caseFile); for (String card : cards) { out.print(card + "\t"); for (String player : players) out.print(queryString(query(player, card)) + "\t"); out.println(queryString(query(caseFile, card))); } } public static void main(String[] args) { ClueReasoner cr = new ClueReasoner(); String[] myCards = {"wh", "li", "st"}; cr.hand("sc", myCards); cr.suggest("sc", "sc", "ro", "lo", "mu", "sc"); cr.suggest("mu", "pe", "pi", "di", "pe", null); cr.suggest("wh", "mu", "re", "ba", "pe", null); cr.suggest("gr", "wh", "kn", "ba", "pl", null); cr.suggest("pe", "gr", "ca", "di", "wh", null); cr.suggest("pl", "wh", "wr", "st", "sc", "wh"); cr.suggest("sc", "pl", "ro", "co", "mu", "pl"); cr.suggest("mu", "pe", "ro", "ba", "wh", null); cr.suggest("wh", "mu", "ca", "st", "gr", null); cr.suggest("gr", "pe", "kn", "di", "pe", null); cr.suggest("pe", "mu", "pi", "di", "pl", null); cr.suggest("pl", "gr", "kn", "co", "wh", null); cr.suggest("sc", "pe", "kn", "lo", "mu", "lo"); cr.suggest("mu", "pe", "kn", "di", "wh", null); cr.suggest("wh", "pe", "wr", "ha", "gr", null); cr.suggest("gr", "wh", "pi", "co", "pl", null); cr.suggest("pe", "sc", "pi", "ha", "mu", null); cr.suggest("pl", "pe", "pi", "ba", null, null); cr.suggest("sc", "wh", "pi", "ha", "pe", "ha"); cr.suggest("wh", "pe", "pi", "ha", "pe", null); cr.suggest("pe", "pe", "pi", "ha", null, null); cr.suggest("sc", "gr", "pi", "st", "wh", "gr"); cr.suggest("mu", "pe", "pi", "ba", "pl", null); cr.suggest("wh", "pe", "pi", "st", "sc", "st"); cr.suggest("gr", "wh", "pi", "st", "sc", "wh"); cr.suggest("pe", "wh", "pi", "st", "sc", "wh"); cr.suggest("pl", "pe", "pi", "ki", "gr", null); cr.printNotepad(); cr.accuse("sc", "pe", "pi", "bi", true); } } how can I convert this? • SpringMvc java.lang.NullPointerException When Posting Form To Server [closed]

- by dev_darin
I have a form with a user name field on it when i tab out of the field i use a RESTFUL Web Service that makes a call to a handler method in the controller. The method makes a call to a DAO class that checks the database if the user name exists. This works fine, however when the form is posted to the server i call the same exact function i would call in the handler method however i get a java.lang.NullPointerException when it accesses the class that makes a call to the DAO object. So it does not even access the DAO object the second time. I have exception handlers around the calls in all my classes that makes calls. Any ideas as to whats happening here why i would get the java.lang.NullPointerException the second time the function is called.Does this have anything to do with Spring instantiating DAO classes using a Singleton method or something to that effect? What can be done to resolve this? • Trying to convert simple midlet application to Android application but running into problems.

- by chobo2
Hi I am trying to do some threading in Android so I took an old threading assignment I had done fora midlet and took out the midlet code and replaced it with android code(such as textview). package com.assignment1; import android.app.Activity; import android.os.Bundle; import android.widget.TextView; public class Threading extends Activity { private TextView tortose; private TextView hare; private Thread hareThread; private Thread torotoseThread; private int num = 0; private int num2 = 0; public Threading() { } /** Called when the activity is first created. */ @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); tortose = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.TextView01); hare = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.TextView02); Hare newHare = new Hare(); hareThread = new Thread(newHare); hareThread.start(); Torotose newTortose = new Torotose(); torotoseThread = new Thread(newTortose); torotoseThread.start(); //updateDisplay(); } private synchronized void check(int value1, int value2) { if((value1-value2) >= 10) { try { wait(); } catch(Exception ex) { System.out.println(ex); } } } private synchronized void getGoing(int value1, int value2) { if((value1-value2) == 0) { try { notify(); } catch(Exception ex) { System.out.println(ex); } } } private class Hare extends Thread { public void run() { while(true) { num++; hare.setText(Integer.toString(num)); check(num, num2); try { // are threads different in andriod apps? Thread.sleep(100); // hareThread.sleep(100); } catch(Exception ex) { System.out.println(ex); } } } } private class Torotose extends Thread { public void run() { while(true) { num2++; tortose.setText(Integer.toString(num2)); getGoing(num,num2); try { Thread.sleep(200); //torotoseThread.sleep(200); } catch(Exception ex) { System.out.println(ex); } } } } } First it wanted me to change my threads to like static threads.So is this just how Android does it? Next when I run this code it just crashes with some unexpected error. I am not sure what the error is but when I try to debug it and goes to like to create a new "hare" object it shows me this. // Compiled from ClassLoader.java (version 1.5 : 49.0, super bit) public abstract class java.lang.ClassLoader { // Method descriptor #8 ()V // Stack: 3, Locals: 1 protected ClassLoader(); • Can someone help me with this Java Chess game please?

- by Chris Edwards
Hey guys, Please can someone have a look at this code and let me know whether I am on the right track with the "check_somefigure_move"s and the "check_black/white_promotion"s please? And also any other help you can give would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! P.S. I know the code is not the best implementation, but its a template I have to follow :( Code: class Moves { private final Board B; private boolean regular; public Moves(final Board b) { B = b; regular = regular_position(); } public boolean get_regular_position() { return regular; } public void set_regular_position(final boolean new_reg) { regular = new_reg; } // checking whether B represents a "normal" position or not; // if not, then only simple checks regarding move-correctness should // be performed, only checking the direct characteristics of the figure // moved; // checks whether there is exactly one king of each colour, there are // no more figures than promotions allow, and there are no pawns on the // first or last rank; public boolean regular_position() { int[] counts = new int[256]; for (char file = 'a'; file <= 'h'; ++file) for (char rank = '1'; rank <= '8'; ++rank) ++counts[(int) B.get(file,rank)]; if (counts[Board.white_king] != 1 || counts[Board.black_king] != 1) return false; if (counts[Board.white_pawn] > 8 || counts[Board.black_pawn] > 8) return false; int count_w_promotions = 0; count_w_promotions += Math.max(counts[Board.white_queen]-1,0); count_w_promotions += Math.max(counts[Board.white_rook]-2,0); count_w_promotions += Math.max(counts[Board.white_bishop]-2,0); count_w_promotions += Math.max(counts[Board.white_knight]-2,0); if (count_w_promotions > 8 - counts[Board.white_pawn]) return false; int count_b_promotions = 0; count_b_promotions += Math.max(counts[Board.black_queen]-1,0); count_b_promotions += Math.max(counts[Board.black_rook]-2,0); count_b_promotions += Math.max(counts[Board.black_bishop]-2,0); count_b_promotions += Math.max(counts[Board.black_knight]-2,0); if (count_b_promotions > 8 - counts[Board.black_pawn]) return false; for (char file = 'a'; file <= 'h'; ++file) { final char fig1 = B.get(file,'1'); if (fig1 == Board.white_pawn || fig1 == Board.black_pawn) return false; final char fig8 = B.get(file,'8'); if (fig8 == Board.white_pawn || fig8 == Board.black_pawn) return false; } return true; } public boolean check_normal_white_move(final char file0, final char rank0, final char file1, final char rank1) { if (!   • Why my application ask for a codec to pla the MVI(.MOV) video files while i can play them on WMP and QuickTime?

- by Daniel Lip
I have an application i did some time ago when im loading the video file its ok when trying to play/use the file im getting the messageBox message say that its need a codec to use gspot or search the internet. Wehn im playing this files on my hard disk with Windows Media Play or either QuickTime there is no problems. The Video files for example name are: MVI_2483 in the file name properties i see its type: Quick Time Movie (.MOV) In my application im using DirectShowLib-2005.dll this is the class im using in my case to extract the video file im using it in my application to extract only lightnings from the video file name. In Form1 i have a button click event that just starting the action: private void button8_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { viewToolStripMenuItem.Enabled = false; fileToolStripMenuItem.Enabled = false; button2.Enabled = false; label14.Visible = false; label15.Visible = false; label21.Visible = false; label22.Visible = false; label24.Visible = false; label25.Visible = false; ExtractAutomatic = true; DirectoryInfo info = new DirectoryInfo(_videoFile); string dirName = info.Name; automaticModeDirectory = dirName + "_Automatic"; subDirectoryName = _outputDir + "\\" + automaticModeDirectory; if (secondPass == true) { Start(true); } Start(false); } This is the function start in Form1: private void Start(bool secondpass) { setpicture(-1); if (Directory.Exists(_outputDir) && secondpass == false) { } else { Directory.CreateDirectory(_outputDir); } if (ExtractAutomatic == true) { string subDirectory_Automatic_Name = _outputDir + "\\" + automaticModeDirectory; Directory.CreateDirectory(subDirectory_Automatic_Name); f = new WmvAdapter(_videoFile, Path.Combine(subDirectory_Automatic_Name)); } else { string subDirectory_Manual_Name; if (Directory.Exists(subDirectoryName)) { subDirectory_Manual_Name = subDirectoryName; f = new WmvAdapter(_videoFile, Path.Combine(subDirectory_Manual_Name)); } else { subDirectory_Manual_Name = _outputDir + "\\" + averagesListTextFileDirectory + "_Manual"; Directory.CreateDirectory(subDirectory_Manual_Name); f = new WmvAdapter(_videoFile, Path.Combine(subDirectory_Manual_Name)); } } button1.Enabled = false; f.Secondpass = secondpass; f.FramesToSave = _fts; f.FrameCountAvailable += new WmvAdapter.FrameCountEventHandler(f_FrameCountAvailable); f.StatusChanged += new WmvAdapter.EventHandler(f_StatusChanged); f.ProgressChanged += new WmvAdapter.ProgressEventHandler(f_ProgressChanged); this.Text = "Processing Please Wait..."; label5.ForeColor = Color.Green; label5.Text = "Processing Please Wait"; button8.Enabled = false; button5.Enabled = false; label5.Visible = true; pictureBox1.Image = Lightnings_Extractor.Properties.Resources.Weather_Michmoret; Hrs = 0; //number of hours Min = 0; //number of Minutes Sec = 0; //number of Sec timeElapsed = 0; label10.Text = "00:00:00"; label11.Visible = false; label12.Visible = false; label9.Visible = false; label8.Visible = false; this.button1.Enabled = false; myTrackPanelss1.trackBar1.Enabled = false; this.checkBox2.Enabled = false; this.checkBox1.Enabled = false; numericUpDown1.Enabled = false; timer1.Start(); label2.Text = ""; label1.Visible = true; label2.Visible = true; label3.Visible = true; label4.Visible = true; f.Start(); } And this is the class wich is not my oqn class i just just defined it in some places wich making the problem: using System; using System.Diagnostics; using System.Drawing; using System.Drawing.Imaging; using System.IO; using System.Runtime.InteropServices; using DirectShowLib; using System.Collections.Generic; using Extracting_Frames; using System.Windows.Forms; namespace Polkan.DataSource { internal class WmvAdapter : ISampleGrabberCB, IDisposable { #region Fields_Properties_and_Events bool dis = false; int count = 0; const string fileName = @"d:\histogramValues.dat"; private IFilterGraph2 _filterGraph; private IMediaControl _mediaCtrl; private IMediaEvent _mediaEvent; private int _width; private int _height; private readonly string _outFolder; private int _frameId; //better use a custom EventHandler that passes the results of the action to the subscriber. public delegate void EventHandler(object sender, EventArgs e); public event EventHandler StatusChanged; public delegate void FrameCountEventHandler(object sender, FrameCountEventArgs e); public event FrameCountEventHandler FrameCountAvailable; public delegate void ProgressEventHandler(object sender, ProgressEventArgs e); public event ProgressEventHandler ProgressChanged; private IMediaSeeking _mSeek; private long _duration = 0; private long _avgFrameTime = 0; //just save the averages to a List (not to fs) public List<double> AveragesList { get; set; } public List<long> histogramValuesList; public bool Secondpass { get; set; } public List<int> FramesToSave { get; set; } #endregion #region Constructors and Destructors public WmvAdapter(string file, string outFolder) { _outFolder = outFolder; try { SetupGraph(file); } catch { Dispose(); MessageBox.Show("A codec is required to load this video file. Gspot say that the codec is AVC1 but again wmp and quicktime play the video files no problems. The video files are from my digital camera !

• Update UI in the main activity through handler in a thread (Android)

- by Hrk
Hello, I try to make several connection in a class and update the multiple progressbar in the main screen. But I've got the following error trying to use thread in android : Code: 05-06 13:13:11.092: ERROR/ConnectionManager(22854): ERROR:Can't create handler inside thread that has not called Looper.prepare() Here is a small part of my code in the main Activity public class Act_Main extends ListActivity { private ConnectionManager cm; public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); // Set up the window layout requestWindowFeature(Window.FEATURE_CUSTOM_TITLE); setContentView(R.layout.main); getWindow().setFeatureInt(Window.FEATURE_CUSTOM_TITLE, R.layout.custom_title); } public void startConnection() { //open DB connection db = new DBAdapter(getApplicationContext()); db.open(); cm = new ConnectionManager(handler, db); showDialog(DIALOG_PROGRESS_LOGIN); } @Override public void onStart() { super.onStart(); startConnection(); } protected Dialog onCreateDialog(int id) { switch (id) { case DIALOG_PROGRESS_LOGIN: progressDialog = new ProgressDialog(Act_Main.this); progressDialog.setProgressStyle(ProgressDialog.STYLE_HORIZONTAL); progressDialog.setMessage("Connecting.\nPlease wait..."); progressThreadLogin = new ProgressThreadLogin(); progressThreadLogin.start(); return progressDialog; case DIALOG_PROGRESS_NETWORK: [b]progressDialog = new ProgressDialog(Act_Main.this);[/b] progressDialog.setProgressStyle(ProgressDialog.STYLE_HORIZONTAL); progressDialog.setMessage("Loading entire network.\nPlease wait..."); progressThreadNetwork = new ProgressThreadNetwork(); progressThreadNetwork.start(); return progressDialog; default: return null; } } // Define the Handler that receives messages from the thread and update the progress final Handler handler = new Handler() { public void handleMessage(Message msg) { int total = msg.getData().getInt("total"); int step = msg.getData().getInt("step"); Log.d(TAG, "handleMessage:PROCESSBAR:"+total); progressDialog.setProgress(total); if (total >= 100) { switch (step) { case UPDATE_NETWORK: dismissDialog(DIALOG_PROGRESS_LOGIN); showDialog(DIALOG_PROGRESS_NETWORK); cm.getNetwork(); break; .... default: break; } } } }; private class ProgressThreadLogin extends Thread { ProgressThreadLogin() { } public void run() { cm.login(); } } private class ProgressThreadNetwork extends Thread { ProgressThreadNetwork() { } public void run() { cm.getNetwork(); } } } And my connectionManager class: public class ConnectionManager { public ConnectionManager(Handler handler, DBAdapter db) { this.handler = handler; this.db = db; } public void updateProgressBar(int step, int value) { if (value == 0) total = total+1; else total = value ; Message msg = handler.obtainMessage(); Bundle b = new Bundle(); b.putInt("total", total); b.putInt("step", step); msg.setData(b); handler.handleMessage(msg); } public void login() { //DO MY LOGIN TASK updateProgressBar(Act_Main.UPDATE_NETWORK, 100); } } The crash errors occurs on the first line of "case DIALOG_PROGRESS_NETWORK:". My first progressbar is hidden but the second one is not displayed. I think I've done somthing wrong using the threads and handlers but I dont' know why. I was first using handler.sendMessage in place of handler.handleMessage but when I had several task in my connectionManager, the progressbar was updated only at the end of all tasks. Thank you in advance for your help

• Auto-Suggest via ‘Trie’ (Pre-fix Tree)

- by Strenium
Auto-Suggest (Auto-Complete) “thing” has been around for a few years. Here’s my little snippet on the subject. For one of my projects, I had to deal with a non-trivial set of items to be pulled via auto-suggest used by multiple concurrent users. Simple, dumb iteration through a list in local cache or back-end access didn’t quite cut it. Enter a nifty little structure, perfectly suited for storing and matching verbal data: “Trie” (http://tinyurl.com/db56g) also known as a Pre-fix Tree: “Unlike a binary search tree, no node in the tree stores the key associated with that node; instead, its position in the tree defines the key with which it is associated. All the descendants of a node have a common prefix of the string associated with that node, and the root is associated with the empty string. Values are normally not associated with every node, only with leaves and some inner nodes that correspond to keys of interest.” This is a very scalable, performing structure. Though, as usual, something ‘fast’ comes at a cost of ‘size’; fortunately RAM is more plentiful today so I can live with that. I won’t bore you with the detailed algorithmic performance here - Google can do a better job of such. So, here’s C# implementation of all this. Let’s start with individual node: Trie Node ///
/// Contains datum of a single trie node. ///
public class AutoSuggestTrieNode { public char Value { get; set; } ///
/// Gets a value indicating whether this instance is leaf node. ///
/// <value>     ///     <c>true</c> if this instance is leaf node; otherwise, a prefix node <c>false</c>.     /// </value>     public bool IsLeafNode { get; private set; }       public List<AutoSuggestTrieNode> DescendantNodes { get; private set; }         ///
/// Initializes a new instance of the <see cref="AutoSuggestTrieNode"/> class.     ///
/// The phonetic value.     /// if set to <c>true</c> [is leaf node].     public AutoSuggestTrieNode(char value = ' ', bool isLeafNode = false)     {         Value = value;         IsLeafNode = isLeafNode;           DescendantNodes = new List<AutoSuggestTrieNode>();     }       ///
/// Gets the descendants of the pre-fix node, if any. ///
/// The descendant value. /// <returns></returns> public AutoSuggestTrieNode GetDescendant(char descendantValue) { return DescendantNodes.FirstOrDefault(descendant => descendant.Value == descendantValue); } } Quite self-explanatory, imho. A node is either a “Pre-fix” or a “Leaf” node. “Leaf” contains the full “word”, while the “Pre-fix” nodes act as indices used for matching the results. Ok, now the Trie: Trie Structure ///
/// Contains structure and functionality of an AutoSuggest Trie (Pre-fix Tree) ///
public class AutoSuggestTrie { private readonly AutoSuggestTrieNode _root = new AutoSuggestTrieNode(); ///
/// Adds the word to the trie by breaking it up to pre-fix nodes + leaf node. ///
/// Phonetic value.     public void AddWord(string word)     {         var currentNode = _root;         word = word.Trim().ToLower();           for (int i = 0; i < word.Length; i++)         {             var child = currentNode.GetDescendant(word[i]);               if (child == null) /* this character hasn't yet been indexed in the trie */             {                 var newNode = new AutoSuggestTrieNode(word[i], word.Count() - 1 == i);                   currentNode.DescendantNodes.Add(newNode);                 currentNode = newNode;             }             else                 currentNode = child; /* this character is already indexed, move down the trie */         }     }         ///
/// Gets the suggested matches. ///
/// The phonetic search value.     /// <returns></returns>     public List<string> GetSuggestedMatches(string word)     {         var currentNode = _root;         word = word.Trim().ToLower();           var indexedNodesValues = new StringBuilder();         var resultBag = new ConcurrentBag<string>();           for (int i = 0; i < word.Trim().Length; i++)  /* traverse the trie collecting closest indexed parent (parent can't be leaf, obviously) */         {             var child = currentNode.GetDescendant(word[i]);               if (child == null || word.Count() - 1 == i)                 break; /* done looking, the rest of the characters aren't indexed in the trie */               indexedNodesValues.Append(word[i]);             currentNode = child;         }           Action<AutoSuggestTrieNode, string> collectAllMatches = null;         collectAllMatches = (node, aggregatedValue) => /* traverse the trie collecting matching leafNodes (i.e. "full words") */             {                 if (node.IsLeafNode) /* full word */                     resultBag.Add(aggregatedValue); /* thread-safe write */                   Parallel.ForEach(node.DescendantNodes, descendandNode => /* asynchronous recursive traversal */                 {                     collectAllMatches(descendandNode, String.Format("{0}{1}", aggregatedValue, descendandNode.Value));                 });             };           collectAllMatches(currentNode, indexedNodesValues.ToString());           return resultBag.OrderBy(o => o).ToList();     }         ///
/// Gets the total words (leafs) in the trie. Recursive traversal. ///
public int TotalWords { get { int runningCount = 0; Action<AutoSuggestTrieNode> traverseAllDecendants = null; traverseAllDecendants = n => { runningCount += n.DescendantNodes.Count(o => o.IsLeafNode); n.DescendantNodes.ForEach(traverseAllDecendants); }; traverseAllDecendants(this._root); return runningCount; } } } Matching operations and Inserts involve traversing the nodes before the right “spot” is found. Inserts need be synchronous since ordering of data matters here. However, matching can be done in parallel traversal using recursion (line 64). Here’s sample usage: [TestMethod] public void AutoSuggestTest() { var autoSuggestCache = new AutoSuggestTrie(); var testInput = @"Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Integer nec odio. Praesent libero. Sed cursus ante dapibus diam. Sed nisi. Nulla quis sem at nibh elementum imperdiet. Duis sagittis ipsum. • ASP.NET MVC 2 client-side validation rules not being created

- by Brant Bobby
MVC isn't generating the client-side validation rules for my viewmodel. The HTML just contains this: Note that Fields[] is empty! My view is strongly-typed and uses the new strongly-typed HTML helpers (TextBoxFor(), etc). View Model / Domain Model public class ItemFormViewModel { public Item Item { get; set; } [Required] [StringLength(100)] public string Whatever { get; set; } // for demo } [MetadataType(typeof(ItemMetadata))] public class Item { public string Name { get; set; } public string SKU { get; set; } public int QuantityRequired { get; set; } // etc. } public class ItemMetadata { [Required] [StringLength(100)] public string Name { get; set; } [Required] [StringLength(50)] public string SKU { get; set; } [Range(0, Int32.MaxValue)] public int QuantityRequired { get; set; } // etc. } (I know I'm using a domain model as my / as part of my view model, which isn't a good practice, but disregard that for now.) View <%@ Page Language="C#" MasterPageFile="~/Views/Shared/Site.Master" Inherits="System.Web.Mvc.ViewPage<ItemFormViewModel>" %> <asp:Content ID="Content2" ContentPlaceHolderID="MainContent" runat="server">
Editing item: <%= Html.Encode(Model.Item.Name) %>
<% Html.EnableClientValidation(); %> <%= Html.ValidationSummary("Could not save the item.") %> <% using (Html.BeginForm()) { %> <%= Html.TextBoxFor(model => model.Item.Name) %> <%= Html.TextBoxFor(model => model.Item.SKU) %> <%= Html.TextBoxFor(model => model.Item.QuantityRequired) %> <%= Html.HiddenFor(model => model.Item.ItemID) %> <%= Html.TextBox("Whatever", Model.Whatever) %>  <% } %> </asp:Content> I included the Whatever property on the view model because I suspected that MVC wasn't recursively inspecting the sub-properties of ItemFormViewModel.Item, but even that isn't being validated? I've even tried delving into the MVC framework source code but have come up empty. What could be going on?

• Issue allowing custom Xml Serialization/Deserialization on certain types of field

- by sw1sh
I've been working with Xml Serialization/Deserialization in .net and wanted a method where the serialization/deserialization process would only be applied to certain parts of an Xml fragment. This is so I can keep certain parts of the fragment in Xml after the deserialization process. To do this I thought it would be best to create a new class (XmlLiteral) that implemented IXmlSerializable and then wrote specific code for handling the IXmlSerializable.ReadXml and IXmlSerializable.WriteXml methods. In my example below this works for Serializing, however during the Deserialization process it fails to run for multiple uses of my XmlLiteral class. In my example below sTest1 gets populated correctly, but sTest2 and sTest3 are empty. I'm guessing I must be going wrong with the following lines but can't figure out why.. Any ideas at all? Private Sub ReadXml(ByVal reader As System.Xml.XmlReader) Implements IXmlSerializable.ReadXml Dim StringType As String = "" If reader.IsEmptyElement OrElse reader.Read() = False Then Exit Sub End If _src = reader.ReadOuterXml() End Sub Full listing: Imports System Imports System.Xml.Serialization Imports System.Xml Imports System.IO Imports System.Text Public Class XmlLiteralExample Inherits System.Web.UI.Page Protected Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load Dim MyObjectInstance As New MyObject MyObjectInstance.aProperty = "MyValue" MyObjectInstance.XmlLiteral1 = New XmlLiteral("<test1>Some Value</test1>") MyObjectInstance.XmlLiteral2 = New XmlLiteral("<test2>Some Value</test2>") MyObjectInstance.XmlLiteral3 = New XmlLiteral("<test3>Some Value</test3>") ' quickly serialize the object to Xml Dim sw As New StringWriter(New StringBuilder()) Dim s As New XmlSerializer(MyObjectInstance.[GetType]()), xmlnsEmpty As New XmlSerializerNamespaces xmlnsEmpty.Add("", "") s.Serialize(sw, MyObjectInstance, xmlnsEmpty) Dim XElement As XElement = XElement.Parse(sw.ToString()) ' XElement reads as the following, so serialization works OK '<MyObject> ' <aProperty>MyValue</aProperty> ' <XmlLiteral1> ' <test1>Some Value</test1> ' </XmlLiteral1> ' <XmlLiteral2> ' <test2>Some Value</test2> ' </XmlLiteral2> ' <XmlLiteral3> ' <test3>Some Value</test3> ' </XmlLiteral3> '</MyObject> ' quickly deserialize the object back to an instance of MyObjectInstance2 Dim MyObjectInstance2 As New MyObject Dim xmlReader As XmlReader, x As XmlSerializer xmlReader = XElement.CreateReader x = New XmlSerializer(MyObjectInstance2.GetType()) MyObjectInstance2 = x.Deserialize(xmlReader) Dim sProperty As String = MyObjectInstance2.aProperty ' equal to "MyValue" Dim sTest1 As String = MyObjectInstance2.XmlLiteral1.Text ' contains <test1>Some Value</test1> Dim sTest2 As String = MyObjectInstance2.XmlLiteral2.Text ' is empty Dim sTest3 As String = MyObjectInstance2.XmlLiteral3.Text ' is empty ' sTest3 and sTest3 should be populated but are not? xmlReader = Nothing End Sub Public Class MyObject Private _aProperty As String Private _XmlLiteral1 As XmlLiteral Private _XmlLiteral2 As XmlLiteral Private _XmlLiteral3 As XmlLiteral Public Property aProperty As String Get Return _aProperty End Get Set(ByVal value As String) _aProperty = value End Set End Property Public Property XmlLiteral1 As XmlLiteral Get Return _XmlLiteral1 End Get Set(ByVal value As XmlLiteral) _XmlLiteral1 = value End Set End Property Public Property XmlLiteral2 As XmlLiteral Get Return _XmlLiteral2 End Get Set(ByVal value As XmlLiteral) _XmlLiteral2 = value End Set End Property Public Property XmlLiteral3 As XmlLiteral Get Return _XmlLiteral3 End Get Set(ByVal value As XmlLiteral) _XmlLiteral3 = value End Set End Property Public Sub New() _XmlLiteral1 = New XmlLiteral _XmlLiteral2 = New XmlLiteral _XmlLiteral3 = New XmlLiteral End Sub End Class <System.Xml.Serialization.XmlRootAttribute(Namespace:="", IsNullable:=False)> _ Public Class XmlLiteral Implements IXmlSerializable Private _src As String Public Property Text() As String Get Return _src End Get Set(ByVal value As String) _src = value End Set End Property Public Sub New() _src = "" End Sub Public Sub New(ByVal Text As String) _src = Text End Sub #Region "IXmlSerializable Members" Private Function GetSchema() As System.Xml.Schema.XmlSchema Implements IXmlSerializable.GetSchema Return Nothing End Function Private Sub ReadXml(ByVal reader As System.Xml.XmlReader) Implements IXmlSerializable.ReadXml Dim StringType As String = "" If reader.IsEmptyElement OrElse reader.Read() = False Then Exit Sub End If _src = reader.ReadOuterXml() End Sub Private Sub WriteXml(ByVal writer As System.Xml.XmlWriter) Implements IXmlSerializable.WriteXml writer.WriteRaw(_src) End Sub #End Region End Class End Class

• Create Hello World with RESTful web service and Jersey

- by Harry Pham
I follow tutorial here on how to create web service using RESTful web service and Jersey and I get kind of stuck. The code is from HelloWorld3 in the tutorial I linked above. Here is the code. I use Netbean6.8 + glassfish v3 RESTGreeting.java create using JAXB. This class represents the HTML message in Java package com.sun.rest; import javax.xml.bind.annotation.XmlRootElement; import javax.xml.bind.annotation.XmlElement; @XmlRootElement(name = "restgreeting") public class RESTGreeting { private String message; private String name; /** * Creates new instance of Greeting */ public RESTGreeting() { } /* Create new instance of Greeting * with parameters message and name */ public RESTGreeting( String message, String name) { this.message = message; this.name = name; } /** Getter for message * return value for message * */ @XmlElement public String getMessage() { return message; } public void setMessage(String message) { this.message = message; } /* Getter for name * return name */ @XmlElement public String getName() { return name; } public void setName(String name) { this.name = name; } } HelloGreetingService.java creates a RESTful web service that returns an HTML message package com.sun.rest; import javax.ws.rs.core.Context; import javax.ws.rs.core.UriInfo; import javax.ws.rs.Consumes; import javax.ws.rs.PUT; import javax.ws.rs.Path; import javax.ws.rs.GET; import javax.ws.rs.Produces; import javax.ws.rs.QueryParam; @Path("helloGreeting") public class HelloGreetingService { @Context private UriInfo context; /** Creates a new instance of HelloGreetingService */ public HelloGreetingService() { } /** * Retrieves representation of an instance of com.sun.rest.HelloGreetingService * @return an instance of java.lang.String */ @GET @Produces("text/html") public RESTGreeting getHtml(@QueryParam("name") String name) { return new RESTGreeting( getGreeting(), name); } private String getGreeting() { return "Hello "; } /** * PUT method for updating or creating an instance of HelloGreetingService * @param content representation for the resource * @return an HTTP response with content of the updated or created resource. */ @PUT @Consumes("text/html") public void putHtml(String content) { } } However when i deploy it on Glassfish, and run it. It generate an exception. I try to debug using netbean 6.8, and figure out that this line return new RESTGreeting(getGreeting(), name); in HelloGreetingService.java cause the exception. But not sure why. • Problem with System.Diagnostics.Process RedirectStandardOutput to appear in Winforms Textbox in real

- by Jonathan Websdale
I'm having problems with the redirected output from a console application being presented in a Winforms textbox in real-time. The messages are being produced line by line however as soon as interaction with the Form is called for, nothing appears to be displayed. Following the many examples on both Stackoverflow and other forums, I can't seem to get the redirected output from the process to display in the textbox on the form until the process completes. By adding debug lines to the 'stringWriter_StringWritten' method and writing the redirected messages to the debug window I can see the messages arriving during the running of the process but these messages will not appear on the form's textbox until the process completes. Grateful for any advice on this. Here's an extract of the code public partial class RunExternalProcess : Form { private static int numberOutputLines = 0; private static MyStringWriter stringWriter; public RunExternalProcess() { InitializeComponent(); // Create the output message writter RunExternalProcess.stringWriter = new MyStringWriter(); stringWriter.StringWritten += new EventHandler(stringWriter_StringWritten); System.Diagnostics.ProcessStartInfo startInfo = new System.Diagnostics.ProcessStartInfo(); startInfo.FileName = "myCommandLineApp.exe"; startInfo.UseShellExecute = false; startInfo.RedirectStandardOutput = true; startInfo.CreateNoWindow = true; startInfo.WindowStyle = System.Diagnostics.ProcessWindowStyle.Hidden; using (var pProcess = new System.Diagnostics.Process()) { pProcess.StartInfo = startInfo; pProcess.OutputDataReceived += new System.Diagnostics.DataReceivedEventHandler(RunExternalProcess.Process_OutputDataReceived); pProcess.EnableRaisingEvents = true; try { pProcess.Start(); pProcess.BeginOutputReadLine(); pProcess.BeginErrorReadLine(); pProcess.WaitForExit(); } catch (Exception ex) { MessageBox.Show(ex.ToString()); } finally { pProcess.OutputDataReceived -= new System.Diagnostics.DataReceivedEventHandler(RunExternalProcess.Process_OutputDataReceived); } } } private static void Process_OutputDataReceived(object sender, System.Diagnostics.DataReceivedEventArgs e) { if (!string.IsNullOrEmpty(e.Data)) { RunExternalProcess.OutputMessage(e.Data); } } private static void OutputMessage(string message) { RunExternalProcess.stringWriter.WriteLine("[" + RunExternalProcess.numberOutputLines++.ToString() + "] - " + message); } private void stringWriter_StringWritten(object sender, EventArgs e) { System.Diagnostics.Debug.WriteLine(((MyStringWriter)sender).GetStringBuilder().ToString()); SetProgressTextBox(((MyStringWriter)sender).GetStringBuilder().ToString()); } private delegate void SetProgressTextBoxCallback(string text); private void SetProgressTextBox(string text) { if (this.ProgressTextBox.InvokeRequired) { SetProgressTextBoxCallback callback = new SetProgressTextBoxCallback(SetProgressTextBox); this.BeginInvoke(callback, new object[] { text }); } else { this.ProgressTextBox.Text = text; this.ProgressTextBox.Select(this.ProgressTextBox.Text.Length, 0); this.ProgressTextBox.ScrollToCaret(); } } } public class MyStringWriter : System.IO.StringWriter { // Define the event. public event EventHandler StringWritten; public MyStringWriter() : base() { } public MyStringWriter(StringBuilder sb) : base(sb) { } public MyStringWriter(StringBuilder sb, IFormatProvider formatProvider) : base(sb, formatProvider) { } public MyStringWriter(IFormatProvider formatProvider) : base(formatProvider) { } protected virtual void OnStringWritten() { if (StringWritten != null) { StringWritten(this, EventArgs.Empty); } } public override void Write(char value) { base.Write(value); this.OnStringWritten(); } public override void Write(char[] buffer, int index, int count) { base.Write(buffer, index, count); this.OnStringWritten(); } public override void Write(string value) { base.Write(value); this.OnStringWritten(); } }

• How can i make a gallery with web images from my website?

- by ronhdoge
I currently have two codes that i am trying to figure out how to mix or write a new code to have a gallery with image doing fill_parent but i can slide sideways to see the other url linked images from my site. here are both parts of code i have: package com.mandarich.gallerygrid; import java.io.InputStream; import java.net.URL; import android.app.Activity; import android.graphics.drawable.Drawable; import android.os.Bundle; import android.widget.ImageView; public class Gallery extends Activity { /** Called when the activity is first created. */ public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); ImageView imgView =(ImageView)findViewById(R.id.ImageView01); Drawable drawable = LoadImageFromWebOperations("http://www.mandarichmodels.com/hot-pics/"); imgView.setImageDrawable(drawable); } private Drawable LoadImageFromWebOperations(String url) { try { InputStream is = (InputStream) new URL(url).getContent(); Drawable d = Drawable.createFromStream(is, "src name"); return d; }catch (Exception e) { System.out.println("Exc="+e); return null; } } } and here is my gallery code package com.mandarich.Grid; import android.app.Activity; import android.content.Context; import android.content.res.TypedArray; import android.os.Bundle; import android.view.View; import android.view.ViewGroup; import android.widget.AdapterView; import android.widget.BaseAdapter; import android.widget.Gallery; import android.widget.ImageView; import android.widget.Toast; import android.widget.AdapterView.OnItemClickListener; public class gridfinal extends Activity { private Gallery gallery; @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); gallery = (Gallery) findViewById(R.id.examplegallery); gallery.setAdapter(new AddImgAdp(this)); gallery.setOnItemClickListener(new OnItemClickListener() { @SuppressWarnings("unchecked") public void onItemClick(AdapterView parent, View v, int position, long id) { // Displaying the position when the gallery item in clicked Toast.makeText(gridfinal.this, "Position=" + position, Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show(); } }); } public class AddImgAdp extends BaseAdapter { int GalItemBg; private Context cont; // Adding images. private Integer[] Imgid = { R.drawable.cindy, R.drawable.clinton, R.drawable.colin, R.drawable.cybil, R.drawable.david, R.drawable.demi, R.drawable.drew }; public AddImgAdp(Context c) { cont = c; TypedArray typArray = obtainStyledAttributes(R.styleable.GalleryTheme); GalItemBg = typArray.getResourceId(R.styleable.GalleryTheme_android_galleryItemBackground, 0); typArray.recycle(); } public int getCount() { return Imgid.length; } public Object getItem(int position) { return position; } public long getItemId(int position) { return position; } public View getView(int position, View convertView, ViewGroup parent) { ImageView imgView = new ImageView(cont); imgView.setImageResource(Imgid[position]); // Fixing width & height for image to display imgView.setLayoutParams(new Gallery.LayoutParams(430, 370)); imgView.setScaleType(ImageView.ScaleType.FIT_XY); imgView.setBackgroundResource(GalItemBg); return imgView; } } }

• Movement and Collision with AABB

- by Jeremy Giberson
I'm having a little difficulty figuring out the following scenarios. http://i.stack.imgur.com/8lM6i.png In scenario A, the moving entity has fallen to (and slightly into the floor). The current position represents the projected position that will occur if I apply the acceleration & velocity as usual without worrying about collision. The Next position, represents the corrected projection position after collision check. The resulting end position is the falling entity now rests ON the floor--that is, in a consistent state of collision by sharing it's bottom X axis with the floor's top X axis. My current update loop looks like the following: // figure out forces & accelerations and project an objects next position // check collision occurrence from current position -> projected position // if a collision occurs, adjust projection position Which seems to be working for the scenario of my object falling to the floor. However, the situation becomes sticky when trying to figure out scenario's B & C. In scenario B, I'm attempt to move along the floor on the X axis (player is pressing right direction button) additionally, gravity is pulling the object into the floor. The problem is, when the object attempts to move the collision detection code is going to recognize that the object is already colliding with the floor to begin with, and auto correct any movement back to where it was before. In scenario C, I'm attempting to jump off the floor. Again, because the object is already in a constant collision with the floor, when the collision routine checks to make sure moving from current position to projected position doesn't result in a collision, it will fail because at the beginning of the motion, the object is already colliding. How do you allow movement along the edge of an object? How do you allow movement away from an object you are already colliding with. Extra Info My collision routine is based on AABB sweeping test from an old gamasutra article, http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/3383/simple_intersection_tests_for_games.php?page=3 My bounding box implementation is based on top left/bottom right instead of midpoint/extents, so my min/max functions are adjusted. Otherwise, here is my bounding box class with collision routines: public class BoundingBox { public XYZ topLeft; public XYZ bottomRight; public BoundingBox(float x, float y, float z, float w, float h, float d) { topLeft = new XYZ(); bottomRight = new XYZ(); topLeft.x = x; topLeft.y = y; topLeft.z = z; bottomRight.x = x+w; bottomRight.y = y+h; bottomRight.z = z+d; } public BoundingBox(XYZ position, XYZ dimensions, boolean centered) { topLeft = new XYZ(); • .NET Declarative Security: Why is SecurityAction.Deny impossible to work with?

- by rally25rs
I've been messing with this for about a day and a half now sifting through .NET reflector and MSDN docs, and can't figure anything out... As it stands in the .NET framework, you can demand that the current Principal belong to a role to be able to execute a method by marking a method like this: [PrincipalPermission(SecurityAction.Demand, Role = "CanEdit")] public void Save() { ... } I am working with an existing security model that already has a "ReadOnly" role defined, so I need to do exactly the opposite of above... block the Save() method if a user is in the "ReadOnly" role. No problem, right? just flip the SecurityAction to .Deny: [PrincipalPermission(SecurityAction.Deny, Role = "ReadOnly")] public void Save() { ... } Well, it turns out that this does nothing at all. The method still runs fine. It seems that the PrincipalPermissionAttribute defines: public override IPermission CreatePermission() But when the attribute is set to SecurityAction.Deny, this method is never called, so no IPermission object is ever created. Does anyone know of a way to get .Deny to work? I've been trying to make a custom secutiry attribute, but even that doesn't work. I tried to get tricky and do: public class MyPermissionAttribute : CodeAccessSecurityAttribute { private SecurityAction securityAction; public MyPermissionAttribute(SecurityAction action) : base(SecurityAction.Demand) { if (action != SecurityAction.Demand && action != SecurityAction.Deny) throw new ArgumentException("Unsupported SecurityAction. Only Demand and Deny are supported."); this.securityAction = action; } public override IPermission CreatePermission() { // do something based on the SecurityAction... } } Notice my attribute constructor always passes SecurityAction.Demand, which is the one action that would work previously. However, even in this case, the CreatePermission() method is still only called when the attribute is set to .Demand, and not .Deny! Maybe the runtime is actually checking the attribute instead of the SecurityAction passed to the CodeAccessSecurityAttribute constructor? I'm not sure what else to try here... anyone have any ideas? You wouldn't think it would be that hard to deny method access based on a role, instead of only demanding it. It really disturbed me that the default PrincipalPermission appears from within an IDE like it would be just fine doing a .Deny, and there is like a 1-liner in the MSDN docs that hint that it won't work. You would think the PrincipalPermissionAttribute constructor would throw an exception immediately if anything other that .Demand is specified, since that could create a big security hole! I never would have realized that .Deny does nothing at all if I hadn't been unit testing! Again, all this stems from having to deal with an existing security model that has a "ReadOnly" role that needs to be denied access, instead of doing it the other way around, where I cna just grant access to a role. Thanks for any help! Quick followup: I can actually make my custom attribute work by doing this: public class MyPermissionAttribute : CodeAccessSecurityAttribute { public SecurityAction SecurityAction { get; set; } public MyPermissionAttribute(SecurityAction action) : base(action) { } public override IPermission CreatePermission() { switch(this.SecurityAction) { ... } // check Demand or Deny } } And decorating the method: [MyPermission(SecurityAction.Demand, SecurityAction = SecurityAction.Deny, Role = "ReadOnly")] public void Save() { ... } But that is terribly ugly, since I'm specifying both Demand and Deny in the same attribute. But it does work... Another interesting note: My custom class extends CodeAccessSecurityAttribute, which in turn only extends SecurityAttribute. If I cnage my custom class to directly extend SecurityAttribute, then nothing at all works. So it seems the runtime is definately looking for only CodeAccessSecurityAttribute instances in the metadata, and does something funny with the SecurityAction specified, even if a custom constructor overrides it.

• Using UUIDs for cheap equals() and hashCode()

- by Tom McIntyre
I have an immutable class, TokenList, which consists of a list of Token objects, which are also immutable: @Immutable public final class TokenList { private final List<Token> tokens; public TokenList(List<Token> tokens) { this.tokens = Collections.unmodifiableList(new ArrayList(tokens)); } public List<Token> getTokens() { return tokens; } } I do several operations on these TokenLists that take multiple TokenLists as inputs and return a single TokenList as the output. There can be arbitrarily many TokenLists going in, and each can have arbitrarily many Tokens. These operations are expensive, and there is a good chance that the same operation (ie the same inputs) will be performed multiple times, so I would like to cache the outputs. However, performance is critical, and I am worried about the expense of performing hashCode() and equals() on these objects that may contain arbitrarily many elements (as they are immutable then hashCode could be cached, but equals will still be expensive). This led me to wondering whether I could use a UUID to provide equals() and hashCode() simply and cheaply by making the following updates to TokenList: @Immutable public final class TokenList { private final List<Token> tokens; private final UUID uuid; public TokenList(List<Token> tokens) { this.tokens = Collections.unmodifiableList(new ArrayList(tokens)); this.uuid = UUID.randomUUID(); } public List<Token> getTokens() { return tokens; } public UUID getUuid() { return uuid; } } And something like this to act as a cache key: @Immutable public final class TopicListCacheKey { private final UUID[] uuids; public TopicListCacheKey(TopicList... topicLists) { uuids = new UUID[topicLists.length]; for (int i = 0; i < uuids.length; i++) { uuids[i] = topicLists[i].getUuid(); } } @Override public int hashCode() { return Arrays.hashCode(uuids); } @Override public boolean equals(Object other) { if (other == this) return true; if (other instanceof TopicListCacheKey) return Arrays.equals(uuids, ((TopicListCacheKey) other).uuids); return false; } } I figure that there are 2^128 different UUIDs and I will probably have at most around 1,000,000 TokenList objects active in the application at any time. Given this, and the fact that the UUIDs are used combinatorially in cache keys, it seems that the chances of this producing the wrong result are vanishingly small. Nevertheless, I feel uneasy about going ahead with it as it just feels 'dirty'. Are there any reasons I should not use this system? Will the performance costs of the SecureRandom used by UUID.randomUUID() outweigh the gains (especially since I expect multiple threads to be doing this at the same time)? Are collisions going to be more likely than I think? Basically, is there anything wrong with doing it this way?? Thanks.
