• Error in my Separating Axis Theorem collision code

- by Holly
The only collision experience i've had was with simple rectangles, i wanted to find something that would allow me to define polygonal areas for collision and have been trying to make sense of SAT using these two links Though i'm a bit iffy with the math for the most part i feel like i understand the theory! Except my implementation somewhere down the line must be off as: (excuse the hideous font) As mentioned above i have defined a CollisionPolygon class where most of my theory is implemented and then have a helper class called Vect which was meant to be for Vectors but has also been used to contain a vertex given that both just have two float values. I've tried stepping through the function and inspecting the values to solve things but given so many axes and vectors and new math to work out as i go i'm struggling to find the erroneous calculation(s) and would really appreciate any help. Apologies if this is not suitable as a question! • How do I cleanly design a central render/animation loop?

- by mtoast
I'm learning some graphics programming, and am in the midst of my first such project of any substance. But, I am really struggling at the moment with how to architect it cleanly. Let me explain. To display complicated graphics in my current language of choice (JavaScript -- have you heard of it?), you have to draw graphical content onto a element. And to do animation, you must clear the after every frame (unless you want previous graphics to remain). Thus, most canvas-related JavaScript demos I've seen have a function like this: function render() { clearCanvas(); // draw stuff here requestAnimationFrame(render); } render, as you may surmise, encapsulates the drawing of a single frame. What a single frame contains at a specific point in time, well... that is determined by the program state. So, in order for my program to do its thing, I just need to look at the state, and decide what to render. Right? Right. But that is more complicated than it seems. My program is called "Critter Clicker". In my program, you see several cute critters bouncing around the screen. Clicking on one of them agitates it, making it bounce around even more. There is also a start screen, which says "Click to start!" prior to the critters being displayed. Here are a few of the objects I'm working with in my program: StartScreenView // represents the start screen CritterTubView // represents the area in which the critters live CritterList // a collection of all the critters Critter // a single critter model CritterView // view of a single critter Nothing too egregious with this, I think. Yet, when I set out to flesh out my render function, I get stuck, because everything I write seems utterly ugly and reminiscent of a certain popular Italian dish. Here are a couple of approaches I've attempted, with my internal thought process included, and unrelated bits excluded for clarity. Approach 1: "It's conditions all the way down" // "I'll just write the program as I think it, one frame at a time." if (assetsLoaded) { if (userClickedToStart) { if (critterTubDisplayed) { if (crittersDisplayed) { forEach(crittersList, function(c) { if (c.wasClickedRecently) { c.getAgitated(); } }); } else { displayCritters(); } } else { displayCritterTub(); } } else { displayStartScreen(); } } That's a very much simplified example. Yet even with only a fraction of all the rendering conditions visible, render is already starting to get out of hand. So, I dispense with that and try another idea: Approach 2: Under the Rug // "Each view object shall be responsible for its own rendering. // "I'll pass each object the program state, and each can render itself." startScreen.render(state); critterTub.render(state); critterList.render(state); In this setup, I've essentially just pushed those crazy nested conditions to a deeper level in the code, hiding them from view. In other words, startScreen.render would check state to see if it needed actually to be drawn or not, and take the correct action. But this seems more like it only solves a code-aesthetic problem. The third and final approach I'm considering that I'll share is the idea that I could invent my own "wheel" to take care of this. I'm envisioning a function that takes a data structure that defines what should happen at any given point in the render call -- revealing the conditions and dependencies as a kind of tree. Approach 3: Mad Scientist renderTree({ phases: ['startScreen', 'critterTub', 'endCredits'], dependencies: { startScreen: ['assetsLoaded'], critterTub: ['startScreenClicked'], critterList ['critterTubDisplayed'] // etc. }, exclusions: { startScreen: ['startScreenClicked'], // etc. } }); That seems kind of cool. I'm not exactly sure how it would actually work, but I can see it being a rather nifty way to express things, especially if I flex some of JavaScript's events. In any case, I'm a little bit stumped because I don't see an obvious way to do this. If you couldn't tell, I'm coming to this from the web development world, and finding that doing animation is a bit more exotic than arranging an MVC application for handling simple requests - responses. What is the clean, established solution to this common-I-would-think problem?

• iphone Rendering 3-D Object rendering

- by Yoon Lee
Hello, I'm a beginner 3-D Quartz thing but knows how to create application. I was looking over sample of GLGravity Source code given by apple today, I was wondering teapot.h file contains all contents of array file such as indices, vertices. Do you guys think this code has been provided by human or, program? if it so, any auto generate program exist written in c based? (cause teapot.h seemed to me obvious native c code) thanks.

• ThreadPooler in Spring 2.5.6

- by MiKu
My application uses Spring 2.5.6. I have a service that creates explicit threads for some specific task. Triggering of this service call happens through quartz time scheduler. Question : While executing service calls, i want to use some sort of thread pooler that can return me thread instances. Is there any implementations that i can use in Spring?

• Ubiquitous way to get the file system root of a .NET WEB application

- by Eddie
Similar to Ubiquitous way to get the root directory an application is running in via C#, but that question seems to be related to Win Forms. How would the same be done for Web Forms? I was using... HttpContext.Current.Server.MapPath("~") This works great for handling HTTP requests but seems not to work if a scheduler like Quartz.NET invokes a job (the problem I am having). The HttpContext.Current is null in that scenario since an actual HTTP request is not made.

• spring classloader isolation problem on jboss

- by mkosm
Hi, i have two ears deployed on jboss with proper classloaders isolation settings. When seam bean call spring beans which make some queries on database everything works fine, but when spring quartz job bean is invoked and execute tries to execute database queries then there is a problem because spring tries too use hibernate jar from other ear and exception is thrown! It is clearily spring classloader isolation problem. Did anyone meet such a problem? How to ensure isolation?

• Drawing Mirrored Text

- by Jeff
I'm trying to draw mirrored (as in, it looks like you held it up to a mirror) text, and I want to do it the easiest way possible. It is possible to do a transform on a UILabel? Or do I have to use Quartz and do CGContextShowTextAtPoint() ?

• Need some guidelines on iPad animation programming

- by thomasvsundert
Hi, I'm creating an interactive e-book for the iPad. This book will contain multiple pages that will consist of a lot of animations (frame and motion animations), transitions,... I was wondering what my development options are, should I use OpenGL, Quartz,...? I've use UIImageView.animationImages before and found that it had really bad performance. What's the best way to draw frame based animations? Does anybody have some good pointers to resources on this? thanks in advance, Thomas

• Graph generation on iPhone

- by Parrots
Anyone have experience with drawing graphs on the iPhone? Looks like GraphKit isn't an option, so it's up to the programmer to either write his own library (using OpenGL, I guess), or an existing library. I can't seem to find any libraries that are confirmed to work on the iPhone. If you've written your own how did you go about it (opengl, quartz, etc), or if you used a library which one?

• iPhone - How do you make a resizable rectangle for cropping images?

- by 0SX
Hi everyone, I'm having a trouble making a re-sizable rectangle for cropping my images. I'm trying to achieve something like this picture: http://img192.imageshack.us/img192/8930/customcropbox.jpg Well, the only problem is I have no clue where to actually start. I need some advice to how I can achieve this effect of cropping. What documentation should I read up on? Core Graphics or Quartz 2d? Both? I've been coding for the iPhone since it's release date but I've never actually used core graphics and etc. Any help or advice would be much appreciated. I'll throw my code up here as I progress to show how it's done when I achieve it. :-) Also, this rectangular box is moveable across the screen in a UIImageView which just makes it more interesting. Thanks for the help and I look forward to achieving this goal.

• How to export pdf page as a image using pdfsharp .net library ?

- by vi.su.
How to export a pdf page as an image using pdfsharp .net library, for pixel level manipulation ? for example, something like, System.Drawing.BitMap.GetPixel() I am trying to find out empty area (all white, or of any colour) inside a pdf document, to write some graphics / image. 09, June 2010: I have tried this, but it is not working. why the following code is not working as expected ? Bitmap.GetPixel always returns 0. // // PdfSharp.Pdf.PdfDocument // PdfSharp.Pdf.PdfPage // PdfSharp.Drawing.XGraphics // System.Drawing.Bitmap // string srcPDF = @"C:\hcr\test\tmp\file1.pdf"; PdfDocument pdfd = PdfReader.Open(srcPDF); XGraphics xgfx = XGraphics.FromPdfPage(pdfd.Pages[0]); Bitmap b = new Bitmap((int) pdfp.Width.Point, (int) pdfp.Height.Point, xgfx.Graphics); int rgb = b.GetPixel(0, 0).ToArgb();

• Android Packaging Problem: resources.ap_ does not exist

- by Galip
I am trying to fix a problem in Eclipse for like 3 hours and I haven't made any progress. Tomorrow is the customer coming to look at my app, and I have no time left. This is really frustrating! This morning when I was coding and I wanted to run my app on my device Eclipse crashed all of a sudden. 'aapt.exe has stopped working' After this Eclipse wasn't starting anymore. It froze at the splash image. I looked on the internet and tried different solutions like going back to Java SE 6 update 20, changing .ini file etc. in the end reinstalling Eclipse did the job. Shortly after that the 'aapt.exe has stopped working' returned. I found a solution by changing my projects target. 1.5, 1.6, 2.2 doesn't matter, as long as it's different than the one before. Now I get the Error generating final archive: java.io.FileNotFoundException: C:\xxx\bin\resources.ap_ does not exist error. I tried clean but that doesn't work. Deleting and automatically regenarting R.java also didn't work. I ran the same code in Netbeans with the Android plugin and there it gives me the 'aapt.exe has stopped working' again :( Please guys, how can I fix this? Edit: I think I may have found the reason. These are the error lines in the console: org.xmlpull.v1.XmlPullParserException: Binary XML file line #3: <bitmap> requires a valid src attribute at android.graphics.drawable.BitmapDrawable.inflate(BitmapDrawable.java:341) at android.graphics.drawable.Drawable.createFromXmlInner(Drawable.java:779) at android.graphics.drawable.Drawable.createFromXml(Drawable.java:720) at com.android.layoutlib.bridge.ResourceHelper.getDrawable(ResourceHelper.java:150) at com.android.layoutlib.bridge.BridgeTypedArray.getDrawable(BridgeTypedArray.java:668) at android.view.View.<init>(View.java:1846) at android.view.View.<init>(View.java:1795) at android.view.ViewGroup.<init>(ViewGroup.java:282) at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Unknown Source) at org.eclipse.equinox.launcher.Main.invokeFramework(Main.java:619) at org.eclipse.equinox.launcher.Main.basicRun(Main.java:574) at org.eclipse.equinox.launcher.Main.run(Main.java:1407) at org.eclipse.equinox.launcher.Main.main(Main.java:1383) [2011-01-17 16:37:20 - gegevens.xml] Unable to resolve drawable "com.android.layoutlib.utils.ResourceValue@267e33de" in attribute "background" The file it's talking about is 'bg.png'. • Can we move shape (Diamond) in C#

- by Ani
I want to move a Diamond Shape in the form(for example 2 pixels every 200ms) horizantally. I used the following code in From_Paint Event. private void Form1_Paint(object sender, PaintEventArgs e) { Graphics g = e.Graphics; Point p1 = new Point(5,0); Point p2 = new Point(10, 5); Point p3 = new Point(5, 10); Point p4 = new Point(0, 5); Point[] ps = { p1, p2, p3, p4, p1 }; g.DrawLines(Pens.Black, ps);} I know how to move a picturebox but how to do with shape. Thanks, Ani

• How to use Win32 SetCursor() with WPF resource and HwndHost

- by Hank
We have an HwndHost UIElement in our WPF application which is used to display Direct3d graphics, and the only way I have found to set a cursor for the HwndHost UIElment is to call the Win32 API SetCursor(). All of our cursors are resources in managed assemblies, and I would prefer to not change that, but I have not been able to find a way to load one of these cursors via any Win32 APIs like LoadImage(). Does anybody know how to get a handle(hCursor) to a cursor which is a resource in a managed assembly? Or, is there another way to set a cursor on an HwndHost displaying Direct3D graphics?

• Updating multiple Sprites - AS3 performance best practices

- by dani
Within the container "BubbleContainer" I have multiple "Bubble sprites". Each bubble's graphics object (a circle) is updated on a timer event. Let's say I have 50 Bubble sprites and each circle's radius should be updated with a mathematical formula. How do I organize this logic? How do I update all Bubble sprites within the BubbleContainer? (should I call a bubble.update() function or make a temporary reference to the graphics object?) Where do I put the Math logic? (as static functions?)

• Cannot use standard android color attribute in custom color selector

- by Manish Gupta
So, android defines the following in themes.xml: and: I want to use this colorPressedHighlight as the background color for my custom Button when it is pressed. So I defined the following in res/color/app_button_background.xml: <selector xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" >

</selector> Finally, I define my custom ImageButton style: I crash on app launch with the following call stack: 06-27 20:24:41.954: E/AndroidRuntime(532): Caused by: org.xmlpull.v1.XmlPullParserException: Binary XML file line #6:
tag requires a 'drawable' attribute or child tag defining a drawable 06-27 20:24:41.954: E/AndroidRuntime(532): at android.graphics.drawable.StateListDrawable.inflate(StateListDrawable.java:178) 06-27 20:24:41.954: E/AndroidRuntime(532): at android.graphics.drawable.Drawable.createFromXmlInner(Drawable.java:867) 06-27 20:24:41.954: E/AndroidRuntime(532): at android.graphics.drawable.Drawable.createFromXml(Drawable.java:804) 06-27 20:24:41.954: E/AndroidRuntime(532): at android.content.res.Resources.loadDrawable(Resources.java:1920) I know that directly accessing @color/legacy_pressed_highlight or @color/holo_blue_light instead of accessing them through the colorPressedHighlight fixes the crash but it does not solve the problem. Themes can vary, hence I need to access it through the colorPressedHighlight attribute. PS: I had a similar problem to which I haven't found an answer yet. Can someone please help!

• Crop and Resize Image to Specific Dimensions

- by Crunchy
I need some help cropping and resizing images using CSharp.net. My goal here is to take an image and reduce it to 50px by 50px. The following code I found here will do that, however it's scaling the image as well. Ideally I want to scale the image down to as close to 50px by 50px as possible and then remove the parts of the image that are outside 50px by 50px. public Image ResizeImage(Image img, int width, int height) { Bitmap b = new Bitmap(width, height); using (Graphics g = Graphics.FromImage((Image)b)) { g.DrawImage(img, 0, 0, width, height); } return (Image)b; }

• Will html5 change everything for designers?

- by Sean Thompson
What impact do you think html5 will have on the workflow/way graphic design is done for the web? Right now most designers stay in an Adobe tool, doing most of the design work there, and implement some elements with graphics and some with code. Checking out http://www.apple.com/html5/ it seems that almost everything done in a graphic can be done in code. Will designers have to learn very advanced levels of html5 and do the actual design work in the browser or do you see a more "designer friendly" gui being made for html/graphics work? Will tools like photoshop evolve in a way that handles this new lack of image files?
