  • Reaching Intermediate Programming Status

    - by George Stocker
I am a software engineer that's had positions programming in VBA (though I dare not consider that 'real' experience, as it was trial and error!), Perl w/ CGI, C#, and ASP.NET. The latter two are post-undergraduate, with my entrance into the 'real world'. I'm 2 years out of college, and have had 5 years of experience (total) across the languages I've mentioned. However, when it comes to my resume, I can only put 2 years down for C#, and less than a year down for ASP.NET. I feel like I know C#, but I still have to spend time going 'What does this method do?', whereas some of the more senior level engineers can immediately say, "Oh, Method X does this, without ever having looked at that method before." So I know empirically that there's a gulf there, but I'm not exactly sure how to bridge it. I've started programming in Project Euler, and I picked up a book on design patterns, but I still feel like I spend each day treading water, instead of moving forward. That isn't to say that I don't feel like I've made progress, it just means that as far as I come each day, I still see the mountain top way off in the distance. My question is this: How did you overcome this plateau? How long did it take you? What methods can you suggest to assist me in this? I've read through Code Complete, The Mythical Man Month, and CLR via C#, 2nd edition -- my question is: What do I do now? Edit: I just found this question on projects for an intermediate level programmer. I think it adds to the discussion (though it does not supplant my question). As such, I'm adding it to the question as a "For More Information".

  • Geekswithblogs.net Influencer Programm

    - by Staff of Geeks
Recently, @StaffOfGeeks announced to a select group of bloggers, the Geekswithblogs.net Influencer Program.  Here is a little detail about the program. Description (from Influencer Page): Geekswithblogs.net is a community of bloggers passionate about contributing information to the world of developers and IT professionals. Our bloggers are some of the best in the world and receive honors on a regular basis for outside companies (such as the Microsoft© MVP Program). The Geekswithblogs.net Influencer Program is our way as Staff of Geeks to show our appreciation for those bloggers who have the greatest influence on the site. Each influencer in the program is awarded by the amount of posts, views, and comments they receive on their posts in the previous quarter. Each quarter, we select the top 25 bloggers of influence and give them special access to products and services we have obtained through our network of partners. Here is how it works.  Each quarter we select the top 25 bloggers bases on the amount of posts that created in that quarter, and apply points to the views and comments those posts receive.  The selection is purely off of the numbers, we do not select any based on any other basis.  In fact in the first round, several of our key bloggers did not qualify in the top 25.  Though they are still loved dearly, we wanted a program that anyone could be a part of if they put in the hard work. This said, the first quarter ends at the end of March and we will have another round of influencers joining us.  Keep the posts rolling and maybe you will be selected as an influencer! Visit the influencers page to see who has the greatest influence on Geekswithblogs right now.   Technorati Tags: Geekswithblogs

  • What reasons are there to reduce the max-age of a logo to just 8 days? [closed]

    - by callum
Most websites set max-age=31536000 (1 year) on the Cache-control headers of static assets such as logo images. Examples: YouTube Yahoo Twitter BBC But there is a notable exception: Google's logo has max-age=691200 (8 days). I've checked the headers on the Google logo in the past, and it definitely used to be 1 year. (Also, it used to be part of a sprite, and now it is a standalone logo image, but that's probably another question...) What could be valid technical reasons why they would want to reduce its cache lifetime to just 8 days? Google's homepage is one of the most carefully optimised pages in the world, so I imagine there's a good reason. Edit: Please make sure you understand these points before answering: Nobody uses short max-age lifetimes to allow modifying a static asset in future. When you modify it, you just serve it at a different URL. So no, it's nothing to do with Google doodles. Think about it: even if Google didn't understand this basic trick of HTTP, 8 days still wouldn't be appropriate, as only those users who don't have the original logo cached would see the doodle on doodle-day – and then that group of users would go on seeing the doodle for the following 8 days after Google changed it back :) Web servers do not worry about "filling up" the caches of clients (or proxies). The client manages this by itself – when it hits its own storage limit, it just starts dropping the lowest priority items to make space for new items. The priority score is based on the question "How likely am I to benefit from having cached this URL?", which is nothing to do with what max-age value the server sent when the URL was originally requested; it's a heuristic based on the "frecency" of requests for that URL. The max-age simply lets the server set a cut-off point – the time at which the client is supposed to discard the item regardless of how often it's being re-used. It would be very nice and trusting of a downstream client/proxy to rely on all origin servers "holding back" from filling up their caches, but I don't think we live in that world ;)

  • Attributes of an Ethical Programmer?

    - by ahmed
Software that we write has ramifications in the real world. If not, it wouldn't be very useful. Thus, it has the potential to sweep across the world faster than a deadly manmade virus or to affect society every bit as much as genetic manipulation. Maybe we can't see how right now, but in the future our code will have ever-greater potential for harm or good. Of course, there's the issue of hacking. That's clearly a crime. Or is it that clear? Isn't hacking acceptable for our government in the event of national security? What about for other governments? Cases of life-and-death emergency? Tracking down deadbeat parents? Screening the genetic profile of job candidates? Where is the line drawn? Who decides? Do programmers have responsibility for how their code is used? What if a programmer writes code to pry into confidential information or copy-protected material? Does he bear responsibility along with the person who used the program? What about a programmer who knowingly or unknowingly writes code to "fix the books?" Should he be liable?

  • Oracle India Provides Choices For Students

    - by user769227
For next year's graduating class of computer science and engineering students, the world is their oyster. I believe that in today's day and age the opportunities for graduates are truly endless. Many students have a misconception that Oracle is mainly a Database Company. While we certainly are leaders in the database space, there is so much more that we do. If you look a little bit deeper you will find we have business groups within Oracle creating technical solutions across all areas of the business world. I think that the opportunities available at Oracle can be those 'life changing' roles that students are looking for where they will learn, develop, be challenged and still have the opportunity to be themselves. What other company provides as many choices for students as Oracle. The range of business and technical solutions we provide is enormous. At Oracle India we hire students across a range of different business groups. Below is a presentation showing you just some of the different business groups that hire graduates in Oracle India. The theme is 'choices' because we believe with the variety of work we do we provide the choice to allow you to be you. .prezi-player { width: 550px; } .prezi-player-links { text-align: center; } Oracle Campus Recruitment India: Choices on Prezi As you can see, here at Oracle you get the chance to allow 'You to be You'. • What kind of physics to choose for our arcade 3D MMO?

    - by Nick
We're creating an action MMO using Three.js (WebGL) with an arcadish feel, and implementing physics for it has been a pain in the butt. Our game has a terrain where the character will walk on, and in the future 3D objects (a house, a tree, etc) that will have collisions. In terms of complexity, the physics engine should be like World of Warcraft. We don't need friction, bouncing behaviour or anything more complex like joints, etc. Just gravity. I have managed to implement terrain physics so far by casting a ray downwards, but it does not take into account possible 3D objects. Note that these 3D objects need to have convex collisions, so our artists create a 3D house and the player can walk inside but can't walk through the walls. How do I implement proper collision detection with 3D objects like in World of Warcraft? Do I need an advanced physics engine? I read about Physijs which looks cool, but I fear that it may be overkill to implement that for our game. Also, how does WoW do it? Do they have a separate raycasting system for the terrain? Or do they treat the terrain like any other convex mesh? A screenshot of our game so far:

  • Using prefix incremented loops in C#

    - by KChaloux
Back when I started programming in college, a friend encouraged me to use the prefix incrementation operator ++i instead of the postfix i++, citing that there was a slight chance of better performance with no real chance of a downside. I realize this is true in C++, and it's become a general habit that I continue to do. I'm led to believe that it makes little to no difference when used in a loop in C#, regardless of data type. Apparently the ++ operator can't be overridden. Nevertheless, I like the appearance more, and don't see a direct downside to it. It did astonish a coworker just a moment ago though, he made the (fairly logical) assumption that my loop would terminate early as a result. He's a self-taught programmer, and apparently never came across the C++ convention. That made me question whether or not the equivalent behavior of pre- and post-fix increment and decrement operators in loops is well known enough. Is it acceptable for me to continue using ++i in looping constructs because of style preference, even though it has no real performance benefit? Or is it likely to cause confusion amongst other programmers? Note: This is assuming the ++i convention is used consistently throughout all code.

  • Game: Age of Empires sound good but video "out of range"

    - by Ezekiel
I'm new to the Ubuntu realm. Currently i'm using Linux Mint 12 with Wine 1.4 and PLAYONLINUX as game loading/playing programs. Video card is MSI GeForce FX5200 (NVIDIA) and is 3d enabled. I can play "Call of Duty 5 demo just fine. My real love is the Age of Empires series games. I loaded the WINE version of AOE 1 demo. No sound and no picture. Black screen with "Out of Range" window in red. I loaded my CD version of AOE 1 through PLAYONLINUX. I get the sound just fine but again the black screen with "Out of Range" window in red. I have used all the monitor settings in both the "settings" and in winecfg. None of the eight monitor options worked in any combination. I have checked all the questions and blogs on this error and tried all I found and no one seems to come up with a real fix. I guess I need to know exactly what the "Out of Range" means. Any help? Anywhere? Thanks

  • Create indefinitely oscillating pendulum in Farseer Physics 3.3.1/Box2d

    - by GONeale
I am new to Farseer Physics and using version 3.3.1. I am after some help and would even be happy to receive Box2d answers just to ensure I get a response as I should then be able to convert it! -- Thanks ...After a lot of tinkering around I have managed to produce a thin vertical rectangle shape on the screen and I wish this to swing back and forth pinned at the top up to an angle I set (90 degrees would be fine for this sample). When it is approaching the top I wish it to slow down, then fall back the way it just came, increase speed then obviously slow to a stop at the top again. Almost how a swinging pirate ship would work at a theme park. This is the code I have so far which swings the shape, but it is seeming to lose speed on each swing eventually grinding to a halt: float playerWidth = ConvertUnits.ToSimUnits(5), playerHeight = ConvertUnits.ToSimUnits(68); playerPosition = ConvertUnits.ToSimUnits(-350, 0); playerBody = BodyFactory.CreateRectangle(World, playerWidth, playerHeight, 2f, playerPosition); playerBody.BodyType = BodyType.Dynamic; // create player sprite based on player body _rectangleSprite = new Sprite(ScreenManager.Assets.TextureFromShape(playerBody.FixtureList[0].Shape, MaterialType.Player, Color.Orange, 1f)); // Create swinging joint var joint = JointFactory.CreateFixedRevoluteJoint(World, playerBody, ConvertUnits.ToSimUnits(0, -34), playerBody.Position); If somebody could also provide the command I would need to pause the shape on a mouse click or keyboard command at it's current angle and then continue when I let go of the mouse click that would be super fantastic! (I actually posted this on StackOverflow as well before I realised there was a dedicated game development forum) Cheers

  • Erlang node acts like it connects, but doesn't [migrated]

    - by Malfist
I'm trying to setup a distributed network of nodes across a few firewalls and it's not going so well. My application is structured like this: there is a central server that always running a node ([email protected]) and my co-worker's laptops connect to it on startup. This works if we're all in the office, but if someone is at home, they can connect to the masternode, but they fail to connect to the other nodes in the swarm. I.E., erlang fails to gossip correctly. To correct this, I've change epmd's port number and changed the inet_dist_listen ports to a known open port (1755 and 7070 respectively). However, something fishy is going on. I can run net_adm:world() and it reports that it connects to master node, but when I run nodes() I get an empty array. Same with net_adm:ping('[email protected]'). See: Eshell V5.9 (abort with ^G) ([email protected])1> net_adm:world(). ['[email protected]'] ([email protected])2> nodes(). [] ([email protected])3> net_adm:ping('[email protected]'). pong ([email protected])4> nodes(). [] ([email protected])5> What's going on, and how can I fix it?

  • Client-Server MMOG & data structures sync when joining / playing

    - by plang
After reading a few articles on MMOG architecture, there is still one point on which I cannot find much information: it has to do with how you keep in sync server data on the client, when you join, and while you play. A pretty vague question, I agree. Let me refine it: Let's say we have an MMOG virtual world subdivided into geographical cells. A player in a cell is mostly interested in what happens in the cell itself, and all the surrounding cells, not more. When joining the game for the first time, the only thing we can do is send some sort of "database dump" of the interesting cells to the client. When playing, I guess it would be very inefficient to do the same thing regularly. I imagine the best thing to do is to send "deltas" to the client, which would allow keeping the local database in sync. Now let's say the player moves, and arrives in another cell. Surrounding cells change, and for all the new cells the player subscribes, the same technique as used when joining the game has to be used: some sort of "database dump". This mechanic of joining/moving in a cell-based MMOG virtual world interests me, and I was wondering if there were tried and tested techniques in this domain. Thanks!

  • Does the term "Learning Curve" include the knowing of the gotchas?

    - by voroninp
When you learn new technology you spend time understanding its concepts and tools. But when technology meets real life strange and not pleasant things happen. Reuqirements are often far from ideal and differ from 'classic' scenario. And soon I find myself bending the technology to my real needs. At this point I begin to know bugs of the system or that is is not so flexible as it seemed at the very begining. And this 'fighting' with technology consumes a great part of the time while developing. What is more depressing is that the bunch of such gotchas and workarounds are not concentrated at one place (book, site, etc.) And before you really confront it you cannot really ask the correct question because you do not even suspect the reason for the problem to occur (unknown-unknown). So my question consiststs of three: 1) Do you really manage (and how) to predict possible future problems? 2) How much time do you spend for finding the workaround/fix/solution before you leave it and switch to other problems. 3) What are the criteria for you to think about yourself as experienced in the tecnology. Do you take these gotchas into account?

  • Frequent disconnects using wlan AR9285

    - by John Neil
I'm getting a large number of disconnects from my wireless when I switched to oneiric server (I did not see these happen with oneiric desktop) from my AR9285 wireless LAN device. Here is the syslog snippet: Oct 17 09:43:17 weather kernel: [ 1537.329138] wlan0: deauthenticated from 00:12:17:7a:8e:42 (Reason: 7) Oct 17 09:43:17 weather kernel: [ 1537.340409] cfg80211: All devices are disconnected, going to restore regulatory settings Oct 17 09:43:17 weather kernel: [ 1537.340423] cfg80211: Restoring regulatory settings Oct 17 09:43:17 weather kernel: [ 1537.340435] cfg80211: Calling CRDA to update world regulatory domain Oct 17 09:43:17 weather kernel: [ 1537.348571] cfg80211: Ignoring regulatory request Set by core since the driver uses its own custom regulatory domain Oct 17 09:43:17 weather kernel: [ 1537.348581] cfg80211: World regulatory domain updated: Oct 17 09:43:17 weather kernel: [ 1537.348586] cfg80211: (start_freq - end_freq @ bandwidth), (max_antenna_gain, max_eirp) Oct 17 09:43:17 weather kernel: [ 1537.348594] cfg80211: (2402000 KHz - 2472000 KHz @ 40000 KHz), (300 mBi, 2000 mBm) Oct 17 09:43:17 weather kernel: [ 1537.348600] cfg80211: (2457000 KHz - 2482000 KHz @ 20000 KHz), (300 mBi, 2000 mBm) Oct 17 09:43:17 weather kernel: [ 1537.348607] cfg80211: (2474000 KHz - 2494000 KHz @ 20000 KHz), (300 mBi, 2000 mBm) Oct 17 09:43:17 weather kernel: [ 1537.348613] cfg80211: (5170000 KHz - 5250000 KHz @ 40000 KHz), (300 mBi, 2000 mBm) Oct 17 09:43:17 weather kernel: [ 1537.348620] cfg80211: (5735000 KHz - 5835000 KHz @ 40000 KHz), (300 mBi, 2000 mBm) Here is the relevant lspci output: # lspci | grep Atheros 02:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01) I have done quite a bit of searching and saw discussions for previous versions of ubuntu that recommended installing the linux-backports-modules package. However, this does not appear to be available for oneiric (just the headers are listed as a package). Any advice on how to achieve a stable wireless connection for this server? It's location mitigates against using a wired connection.

  • Sorting objects before rendering

    - by dreta
I'm trying to implement a scene graph and in all the articles i've come across there is talk about object sorting. So you'd sort your objects by "material" for example. Now untill i sat down and started implementing it, i kind of took this for granted, because it made sense. But now i'm wondering what does sorting actually change? In my engine, i have a manager for UBOs, i use those to store data that'll be shared between programs, at the moment that only involves time, camera and projection matrices and lights (i'm not worrying about managing which lights affect which objects ATM). Now for each model i have to change the model to world matrix uniform, no sorting is going to change that. So is the jump from changing this matrix to also setting a material for each object that bad? I vaguely remember reading somewhere that each time you change something in the pipeline, it has to get flushed and that can cause performance issues. But for each drawing call i'm setting up a model to world matrix anyway, so what sense does it make to ever be concerned about this? BTW is there any information about whether changing a uniform and calling glBufferSubData is more (or less) expensive.

  • Everything has an Interface [closed]

    - by Shane
Possible Duplicate: Do I need to use an interface when only one class will ever implement it? I am taking over a project where every single real class is implementing an Interface. The vast majority of these interfaces are implemented by a single class that share a similar name and the exact same methods (ex: MyCar and MyCarImpl). Almost no 2 classes in the project implement more than the interface that shares its name. I know the general recommendation is to code to an interface rather than an implementation, but isn't this taking it a bit too far? The system might be more flexible in that it is easier to add a new class that behaves very much like an existing class. However, it is significantly harder to parse through the code and method changes now require 2 edits instead of 1. Personally, I normally only create interfaces when there is a need for multiple classes to have the same behavior. I subscribe to YAGNI, so I don't create something unless I see a real need for it. Am I doing it all wrong or is this project going way overboard?
