Annual SQL Server conference in Poland - SQLDay 2014

We had a great 3-days conference this year in Poland. The SQLDay (7th edition) is an annual community conference. We started in 2008 as a part of C2C (community to communities) conference and after that, from 2009 the SQLDay is the independent event dedicated to the SQL Server specialists. This year we had almost 300 people and speakers like Bob Ward, Klaus Aschenbrenner and Alberto Ferrari. Disqus-like comment server

I'm looking at setting up a blog, and I think I want to go the static website compiler route, rather than the perhaps more conventional Wordpress route. I'm looking at using blogofile, but could use jekyll as well. These tools recommend using disqus to embed a javascript comment widget on blog posts. I'd go that route, but I'd rather host the comments myself, rather than use a third party. I could certainly write my own dirt-simple comment server, but I was wondering if anyone knew of one that already exists (of the open source variety). Thanks!

ubuntu cobbler server - importing distros

I setup and fully configured ubuntu-12.04-server machine with cobbler/dhcp running in about 10 minutes (compared to taking over an hour on centos 5.8). I discovered the cobbler import which appears to be useful. Does this remove the need to use a cobbler distro add? whenever I run a cobbler report after a successful import of ubuntu desktop iso: sudo cobbler import --name=Ubuntu --path=/mnt --breed=debian task started: 2012-12-13_163245_import task started (id=Media import, time=Thu Dec 13 16:32:45 2012) Found a debian/ubuntu compatible signature: pool adding distros avoiding symlink loop avoiding symlink loop avoiding symlink loop associating repos associating kickstarts *** TASK COMPLETE *** I just get the following (nothing): distros: ========== profiles: ========== systems: ========== repos: ========== images: ========== mgmtclasses: ========== packages: ========== files: ========== I was rather hoping that I wouldn't have to do the traditional copying of all files in /mnt to a new /distro directory and then perform a cobbler distro add --initrd=/path/to/inird --kernel=/path/to/kernel Maybe I am mistaken about what the import actually does for me. SQL SERVER – Enable PowerPivot Plugin in Excel

Recently I had interesting experience at one conference. My PowerPivot plugin got disabled and I had no clue how to enable the same. After while, I figured out how to enable the same. Once I got back from the event, I searched online and realize that many other people online are facing the same problem. Here is how I solved the problem. When I started Excel it did not load PowerPivot plugin. I found in option>> Add in the plug in to be disabled. I enabled the plugin and it worked very well. Let us see that with images. SQL SERVER – Detect Virtual Log Files (VLF) in LDF

In one of the recent training engagements, I was asked if it true that there are multiple small log files in the large log file (LDF). I found this question very interesting as the answer is yes. Multiple small Virtual Log Files commonly known as VLFs together make an LDF file. The writing of the VLF is sequential and resulting in the writing of the LDF file is sequential as well. This leads to another talk that one does not need more than one log file in most cases. However, in short, you can use following DBCC command to know how many Virtual Log Files or VLFs are present in your log file. DBCC LOGINFO You can find the result of above query to something as displayed in following image. You can see the column which is marked as 2 which means it is active VLF and the one with 0 which is inactive VLF. Starting my own server - basic recommendations and questions [closed]

Possible Duplicate: Can you help me with my capacity planning? I'm planning to start my own high-performance server and then use collocation services for keeping it up and running. I'm planning to USE it for processing videos and keeping big video site up! (using FFMpeg, MENcoder and etc.) I just need recommendations on whether listed hardware is good enough and will work together well and fast enough. Do I need anything else (missed something). I remember about CPU coolers though! ;) I'm planning to use SSD drives so please tell me if it's going to work just as regular HDDs (but much faster)? Are they going to be used as RAID (is this possible for SSDs)? Here is what I would like to get: Intel ® Server System SR1600URHSR (Urbanna) or Intel® Server System SR1695WBAC 2 x Intel Xeon X5650 4 x 16Gb DDR-III 1333MHz Kingston ECC Reg (KVR13R9D4/16) 3 x (or maybe 4x) 480Gb SSD Intel 520 Series (SSDSC2CW480A3K5) Which server system would be better? Is listed hardware new/good enough and worth buying it at the moment? Should I probably take a look at something slightly more expensive but more up to date and powerful, may be? After all as software I would like to use CentOS 6 64 bit + WHM/CPanel? Any other suggestions on maybe cheaper and same/more powerful server management system but WHM? What most important points to keep in mind when starting/maintaining your own server?

Ping server NETBIOS name returns wrong IP and "Destination host unreachable"

Problem server is Windows 2008 R2 VM running on VMWare ESXi 4 host. Single network adapter manually assigned single IP address (192.168.1.11). When I ping the server from any other network computer, it returns 192.168.1.124 and "Destination host unreachable". Yesterday I found a second network adapter assigned to this server with an IP of 169.254... indicating it had no real valid IP. Using the MAC addresses I determined which adapter was not needed/not wanted, and removed it using VMWare systems. This is the network Printer Server and, understandably, nothing is printing right now. I've looked at the solutions here Why was my ping answered by a different IP address than the one pinged? and they aren't applicable to my situation for the following reasons: Output of arp -a on another computer returns the correct IP address (.1.11) assigned to the correct MAC address, the incorrect IP .1.124 is not listed, and the MAC of the network adapter I removed yesterday is not listed at all. I checked out the Microsoft KB article which listed pretty much my exact symptoms ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/981953 ) and it says to check binding orders and look for hidden adapters. But there are no hidden adapters, and there is only one Network Adapter listed in the Binding Order list. Essentially, I can communicate from the server TO any other network device, but I cannot communicate from any other network device TO the server. Help! tightvncserver on ubuntu 12.04 server with ubuntu-desktop installed no unity

The tight vnc server is running but unity does not get loaded. I changed the xstartup to: unset SESSION_MANAGER . /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc [ -x /etc/vnc/xstartup ] && exec /etc/vnc/xstartup [ -r $HOME/.Xresources ] && xrdb $HOME/.Xresources gnome-session & But still no unity. In wich log file can I look for the errors containing the starting of tightvncserver in combination with gnome and unity? Can somone point me at documentation abou tthe loading/starting sequence of Xserver, windows manager etc.? Is this a known issue?

In-Memory OLTP Sample for SQL Server 2014 RTM

I have just found a very good resource about Hekaton (In-memory OLTP feature in the SQL Server 2014). On the Codeplex site you can find the newest Hekaton samples - https://msftdbprodsamples.codeplex.com/releases/view/114491. The latest samples we have were related to the CTP2 version but the newest will work with the RTM version.There are some issues fixed you might find if you tried to run the previous samples on the RTM version:Update (Apr 28, 2014): Fixed an issue where the isolation level for sample stored procedures demonstrating integrity checks was too low. The transaction isolation level for the following stored procedures was updated: Sales.uspInsertSpecialOfferProductinmem, Sales.uspDeleteSpecialOfferinmem, Production.uspInsertProductinmem, and Production.uspDeleteProductinmem.

Optimistic non-locking copy of InnoDB .frm files

MySQL Enterprise Backup(MEB) does hot backup of innodb data and log files. Till MEB 3.6.1, the user backs up the only innodb tables in a 3 step process: STEP 1. Take backup using --only-innodb option STEP 2. Temporarily make the table read only by executing “FLUSH TABLES WITH READ LOCK” MEB 3.7.0 has an enhancement to innodb file copying. The .frm files gets copied along with the hot backup done for innodb files. I would like to make the blog a little interactive by explaining the feature as answers: 1. What are these .frm files? The files containing the metadata, such as the table definition, of a MySQL table. For backups, the full set of .frm files are always required along with the backup data, to be able to restore tables that are altered or dropped after the backup. 2. Can the .frm files not be copied by MEB itself? --only-innodb-with-frm is the new option introduced in MEB 3.7.1 to do a copy of .frm files without locking the tables during backup operation itself. This is to reduce the pain of manually copying the .frm files. The option is intended for backups where you can ensure that no ALTER TABLE, CREATE TABLE, DROP TABLE, or other DDL statements modify the .frm files for InnoDB tables during the backup operation. 3. How is data consistency ensured? MEB does validation of the .frm files after copying by comparing with the server directory to see if the timestamps of any of the .frm files is greater than the saved system time (check .frm time). This change in timestamp of the .frm files will show if a table is altered during the process of backup. The total number of frm files in the server directory is also verified against the copied contents. If the number of .frm files is less compared to server directory, it shows that table/tables have been dropped during the process of backup. If the number of .frm files is more compared to server directory, it shows that new table/tables have been created during backup operation. 4. How does MEB handle data inconsistency? MEB copies the .frm files through several iterations, does the validation and throws a WARNING if there is any inconsistency found in .frm files at the end of backup operation. This means the user is warned of some DDL operations that had occurred during backup operation, and has to manually copy the .frm files or do a backup again. 5. What is the option and explain its usage? The option introduced is --only-innodb-with-frm which does optimistic copy of .frm files without locking. This can be used when the user wants to backup only innodb tables along with .frm files. The option can take one of the 2 values: all | related. --only-innodb-with-frm=all does copy of all .frm files of all innodb tables. --only-innodb-with-frm=related works in conjunction with --include option.This is to allow partial backup of .frm files corresponding to the tables specified in --include. Inconsistent DHCP replies with Windows 2008R2 DHCP server

I've got a Windows 2008R2 standard server running DHCP services. We've noticed that certain clients are receiving inconsistent DHCP replies. We have over 175 Windows workstations in this VLAN that don't seem to have trouble getting DHCP leases. However, PXE-booting clients trying to reach our DHCP server are able to get a lease inconsistently. Additionally, we tried using the "dhcping" tool against our DHCP server and found that roughly two of every three requests time out with "no answer" -- and this holds true when we set the timeout value on dhcping to 20seconds. After a failed attempt, however, we may get a dhcp lease reply immediately with dhcping. This leads me to believe that this issue isn't confined to PXE booting clients, but something more systemic with my LAN layer2 or DHCP. And that possibly my 175 windows clients are experiencing this in some form without my knowledge. We have over 30% of our scope available so the addresses are there. I was unable to find anything in the Windows server "DHCP-Server" log. Of course, my goal is to have my DHCP server reply to every request that it receives on the LAN!

Installing gdm on headless Server Edition

I have Ubuntu Server running on a headless box, which is right now, almost entirely doing only software RAID and feels a little underused. I'd like to get into using Ubuntu as a desktop a little more. What do I need to do (install/etc.) to get Gnome while keeping the box itself headless? I'm not sure which packages to install or which steps to take. I figure I'll just use X over the network (Xming or the like) but something like NX might work.

Ubuntu server 13 hangs on boot

I formatted my WD30EFRX 3TB SATA HDD as GPT with the following layout: 200 MB FAT32 (BOOTABLE) 50GB EXT4 (Mount point: /) 4 GB SWAP SPACE ~2.9 TB EXT4 (with no mount point) Then i created a Flash USB using Rufus 1.3.3 and the following ISO-image: ubuntu-13.04-server-amd64.iso. I used following configuration to create the USB: GPT partition scheme for UEFI computer FAT32 (16KB) I successfully booted from this USB on my Intel D510MO motherboard in UEFI mode (there were a black and white boot loader menu instead of a colorful GUI) and installed the OS. During the boot loader installation i saw it was grub-efi-amd64 as it must be. After installation i removed the flash drive and tried to boot the system, but just after a BIOS POST it hangs (there is a white blinking cursor at the left top corner of the black screen) and nothing happens. UEFI Mode is enabled in the BIOS configuration and i've updated the BIOS to the latest firmware. What went wrong, how i can confirm that system was installed properly? How can i boot the OS?

I have installed an Ubuntu Server. It obviously comes with no graphical interface. I tried to install it with: apt-get install xserver-xorg xfonts* gnome gdm Then I got an error message trying to login with Gnome and eventually I uninstalled everything: apt-get remove xserver-xorg xfonts* gnome gdm However, it seems Ubuntu still has some scripts trying to launch Gnome since when starting I get: Starting GNOME Display Manager fail ... Stopping system v run level compatibility And the system stops forever (I know I can use ALT+F1) What should I modify to have this completely uninstalled? I cannit find anything on the rc2.d...

Switching between ethernet interfaces on Ubuntu 10.04 SERVER

I have ubuntu 10.04 "SERVER" installed on a system with two ehternet ports. I use only one at a time. I wanted to know if I can switch between ports without using ifup and ifdown every time. That means when I connect my Lan cable on eth0 it should work and it does. But when I disconnect the lan cable and connect it on eth1 I have to ifdown eth0 and only then it works. In my /etc/network/interfaces file I have configured both eth0 and eth1. there is no problem other than I have to switch it manually with ifdown and ifup everytime. Please guide. Thanks in advance

Netdisco for Ubuntu server

Has anyone had luck installing netdisco through apt-get? I couldn't get it to work. I tried netdisco-frontend, netdisco-backend, netdisco-common, netdisco-installer. I used the command: sudo apt-get install netdisco-common netdisco-frontend netdisco-backend Everything installed fine, but I can't get it running. It doesn't seem to have install to /usr/local/netdisco/. I have looked all over the internet and there doesn't seem to be an easy way to do this. I use server 12.04. Thanks!

Trouble filtering using rsyslog as syslog server for router

I am trying to configure rsyslog (Ubuntu 12.04 Server) to log events from my router. I found this link which got me most of the way there. I am able to get the events logged from the router, and since I don't them logged in syslog, I set up a filter in rsyslog.conf like this: :fromhost-ip, isequal, "192.168.2.1" /var/log/linksys.log & ~ This works, the only problem is now I am not getting any SSHD logs in auth.log. I am really stumped why this would be, SSHD is a local service. I tried using a different filter instead: :msg,contains, "RV042" /var/log/linksys.log & ~ since RV042 is the name of the router, but this doesn't log anything. Any ideas?

Using Sql Server Change Data Capture with a frequently changing schema

We are looking into enabling Sql Server Change Data Capture for a new subsystem we are building. It's not really because we need it, but we are being pushed for having a complete history traceability, and CDC would nicely solve this requirement with minimum effort on our parts. We are following an agile development process, which in this case means that we frequently make changes to the database schema, e.g. adding new columns, moving data to other columns, etc. We did a small test where we created a table, enabled CDC for that table, and then added a new column to the table. Changes to the new column is not registered in the CDC table. Is there a mechanism to update the CDC table to the new schema, and are there any best practices to how you deal with captured data when migrating the database schema?

Network access lags for Win7 when server network utilization is high

We have a Dell PE2950 file server running Windows 2008, hosting a DFS namespace of ~1.2 TB. This server has two Broadcom 1Gbps NICs teamed together. When there is high traffic going to the server across the network (greater than 200 Mbps), any Windows 7 client accessing a DFS share at the time experiences severe performance problems. For example: Computer A has an AutoCAD drawing opened directly from the DFS share. Performance is normal, not causing any issues. Computer B begins a file transfer, putting a 11GB file onto a different DFS namespace, on the same server Computer A immediately notices lag while using AutoCAD. The cursor momentarily freezes within AutoCAD every 10 seconds or so, and any browsing of the DFS share is extremely slow. Computer B completes file transfer, and performance resumes to normal for Computer A. This is only affecting Windows 7 clients, using a variety of hardware (desktop + laptop). All of our Windows XP clients see no performance impact during the file transfer. Things I have tried with no change: Had Computer A work from an entirely different RAID array from the file transfer destination Updated NIC drivers on clients and server Enabled TCP offload and receive side scaling on the server NIC (previously disabled when the issue began) Antivirus disabled during file transfer I am currently having a user test applications other than AutoCAD when the file transfer occurs, and will update the question with that result. Does anyone have any recommendations for resolution or additional troubleshooting steps?

Music server + Banshee

I'm currently trying to figure out some kind of set-up for my music collection. The music collection is located on my "main PC" and I'm using Banshee to play/manage the music. Since I'm often at a different location where I use my laptop I have a FTP server running on my main PC, use curlftpfs to mount the music in /home/username/Music and sync the Banshee DB/configuration via Dropbox. The problem at the moment is that Banshee skips songs very often when the connection is a little slower. I've been looking at some servers like Ampache but they are not really an option since they don't let me use Banshee (which means I have no ability to change metadata or rate songs). Syncing the whole collection to my laptop isn't an option either because of its size. It would be great if you had some ideas how to make my current set-up more reliable or maybe know an alternative.

Upgrade Ubuntu Server from 11.04 to 11.10 without internet connection

We have application software that really likes Ubuntu Server 11.10. I need to upgrade several 11.04 servers to this version. Two questions: The servers that need to be upgraded do not have Internet access in our datacenter due to security reasons. I need to download the updates/upgrades to a secure system and then transfer them to the datacenter servers for installation. Is anyone aware of the steps involved? How/where do I get the 11.10 updates from? I don't see an option on the Ubuntu site for downloading specific versions of the OS and/or upgrades.
