• Securing a REST API

  I am in the middle of developing a REST API - the first one I ever have. The data being passed through the API is not of such a critical nature that there will be loss of life, economics etc if it was intercepted but at the same time I would like it to be secure. The data being transferred is simply like the data that would be transferred on Twitter or Facebook - not overly confidential but still should be kept private. What is the best way to secure this data? Am I best to use HTTP Basic Auth over SSL or should I be looking into something like OAuth. I have never really used REST much before so bit of a first for me. Thanks

• rails gem share_counts GET method on object?

  created the first rails app! excinting! for two weeks now I did Zombie, rubymonk etc. I love it! I used scaffold form url:string and included the gem share_counts. rails c: f = form.first ShareCounts.twitter f.url works! but... I have trouble to write the controller and the view! For you experienced railies this is probably a silly question, and probably only 5 lines of code, but for me thats a big step learning RoR! I am very thankful if someone could help how I can show the count next to the "url" field. Thank you so much!!! joh

  Hi, I'm trying to download a file from my provider. The url is protected with basic username and password, and everything is sent over ssl. So I try to do this: WebClient proxy = new WebClient(); proxy.DownloadStringCompleted += (o, dscea) => System.Diagnostics.Debugger.Break(); proxy.Credentials = new NetworkCredential("username", "password"); proxy.DownloadStringAsync(new Uri("https://..../.../data.xml")); As you can see I try to validate. The data IS correct, and the code works when I try to download something from twitter. What am I forgetting to connect to this xml file?

• Push notification or thread with timer

  Hi all, In my application, I'm having functionality like twitter that when you have not refreshed your screen, and if there're new messages then you get this message that "You have n new messages" and a refresh button, which on press will refresh the screen. I'm basically fetching all the data from an xml with some url. In case of thread, I need to call a timer after some time period which might affect the app performance. Can anybody please suggest wheather what will be better to use push notifications or thread with timer? Thanx in advance.

  I have this code in the main view controller and it is working just fine and as I wanted. loadingActionSheet = [[UIActionSheet alloc] initWithTitle:@"Posting To Twitter..." delegate:nil cancelButtonTitle:@"Cancel" destructiveButtonTitle:nil otherButtonTitles:nil]; [loadingActionSheet showInView:self.view]; I wanted that code to be reusable from different part of the project so I moved it in a separate file (UIView based). The poblem that I am facing is that self.view is not available there and I don't know why because I am learning and I don't know enough to understand what I am missing. What do I have to do/add/change to have the actionsheet shown in my current view even if that code lives somewhere else?

  I came by the following comment today on twitter "R is not a programming language, it's a statistics package with the GUI missing." And I am wondering - Why not? What is "missing" in R to make it a "programming language" ? Update: For the protocol, I am a big fan of R, use it daily, and support it's existence. I now changed the name of this thread from "Why is R NOT a programming language?" to "Why might someone say R is NOT a programming language?" Which better reflects my motivation for this thread (which is, to know if R has any programmatical disadvantages that I might have not heard about).

  Hello everyone I'm trying to tweak a tiny bit a wordpress, but i am level 0 in php, so i kinda suck :/ I want to add a custom 'tweet this' button (i know there already is a gazillion of them, i just wanted to do it on my own, for fun) So, i'm trying this : <a href="http://twitter.com/home?status=<?php strip_tags(the_excerpt()) ?>" >tweet this</a> the_excerpt() returns "<p> ... excerpt ... </p>" and the strip_tags function does not strip those <p> tags ! • jQuery sanitizing comments and linkifying URLs

  In terms of jQuery (or Javascript), what happens behind the scenes when a person posts a comment on Facebook, Twitter, or a blog? For instance, do they sanitize the text first, and then pattern match URL's into an actual link? Are there other items of concern that the client-side should check in addition to doing some checks on the backend? I have found a few regex's for turning URL's into links, but I'm not sure if there are better solutions. I'm trying to wrap my head around the problem, but I'm having a difficult time knowing where to start. Any guidance you can provide is greatly appreciated!

  I'm using this code to highlight currently active menu tab with Twitter Bootstrap: def nav_link_to(link_text, link_path, options = nil) class_name = current_page?(link_path) ? 'active' : '' content_tag(:li, :class => class_name) do link_to link_text, link_path, options end end This of course makes the link active, only if the given link IS the current page. How can I change this function, such that it would return 'active' for any links below current controller? In other words, for all actions for Posts controller, the links would be active? Thanks.

  Hey guys, I was looking at the Twitter for iPhone app and was puzzled. First of all, there are normal words looking like links inside. Second, when I touch those link-like words, the text view (or maybe web view) jumps to the corresponding part below (yes, it doesn't open Safari, it just jumps to the text within that text/web view) Now I want to implement the same effects. • Two Column Theme, Help, to make both columns seperately Scrollable.

  Hey, I am not sure what to do on this one, I'm not a programmer, but trying to learn CSS as this is how the theme I am using was coded in. I've gotten quite far on my own, but this one stumps me Its two column Theme... As far as I have been able to get, I can use the following: #left { width: 235px; padding: 10px; margin-left: 20px; position: fixed; line-height: 15px; If I change the position to Absolute, The whole page scrolls, If I leave it at Fixed, and add lets say, a Twitter feed, or other type of text that takes me past its reading where you would normally scroll, Its just cut off, cannot get to it, hightlight or scroll.. I've also toyed with the idea, of changing the theme to a 3 column theme, but Again, not a programmer, and i'd be really confused. anyhelp would be great... • building an XML service parsing library

  This is more of a design question I suppose. My company offers a web service to our client that spits data out in a custom xml format. I'd like to build a java library we can offer so our customers can just feed it the url and we will turn it into a set of POJOs built from the response. I can obviously just create a library that will do some simple xml parsing and building of the POJOs but I'm looking to build something a bit more robust. My brain is pulling me in a million directions, wondering if anyone has some pointers or some code to poke at. Was thinking about adding an Abdera extension, but it's not really a syndication format that fits the Abdera model. And most of the popular service libraries (twitter, facebook) all rely on standards format parsers, of which our format isn't.

I see it is defined like this: <p id="signup-btn"> <a id="signup_submit" href="/signup"> <span>Sign Up</span> </a> </p> are they just using css to give the orange button appearance (which may just be a jpg), and also using css to specify the roll-over appearance (another jpg), and finally a third state for mouse-click (another jpg) to give the impression of a real clickable button? If that's how it works, what should I look for to do the same thing? • Rails: What's the suggested approach to retrieve xml from an outside source

  Rails newbie (though long time programmer) here. I'm writing an test app that retrieves data from several outside sources (think Twitter, RSS feeds, etc.) and under certain circumstances, it stores that data in a db (or presents it to the user). The data model and the views are trivial. What I'm having difficulty with is making the actual xml HTTP call to the outside source and deserialize the xml response so I can query/use it in my controller/helper. What library/gem should I use to accomplish this? I tried looking this up around the net, but only came up with some article from 2006 which, knowing how fast Rails has developed, might well be completely deprecated. Your help is much appreciated.

  The context: i have a project, that contains configs/ directory, which contains (surprise-surprise!) a set of config files: database.php, facebook.php, twitter.php, cache.php, etc What I did in svn: I have created branches per specific file and made changes there (changed database connections, facebook API keys, etc). So they were stored in my private branch. Now I'm trying to migrate to "modern" nowadays DSCM - Mercurial. And I cannot get any possibility of doing the same. Any ideas?

  I apologize if this question is vague, but I want to build a drop down header, very similar to the one on StackOverflow that alerts you whenever you have earned a new badge, or on Twitter whenever a new tweet comes in. I've been looking around on the internet for a tutorial, but I'm having trouble googling exactly what I'm looking for. I assume there is a way to do this in jQuery, or there may be a jQuery plugin for it, but I haven't had any luck finding one. The idea would probably be to make an AJAX request every so many seconds, and if a new alert-worthy item is found, display it for the user. If someone could point me to a resource to learn how to build one, and/or an existing plugin, that would be great.
