• How to order a TimeZone list in .NET?

  I have an ASP.NET web application that requires users to select their appropriate time zone so that it can correctly show local times for events. In creating a simple approach for selecting the time zone, I started by just using the values from TimeZoneInfo.GetSystemTimeZones(), and showing that list. The only problem with this is that since our application is primarily targeted at the United States, I'd like to show those entries first, basically starting with Eastern Time and working backwards (West) until I reach Atlantic time. What's a good approach to do this in code?

• Is strftime (hour) showing wrong time?

  I'm using this line to get the beginning time of the first day of the month. t = Time.now.to_date.beginning_of_month.beginning_of_day When i display this using t.strftime("%A %b %e @ %l:%m %p") it shows: Monday Feb 1 @ 12:02 AM The hour is always 12 (instead of 00), and more wierd the minute changes to match the month in integers. For the February date, it shows 12:02 AM I use .prior_month and .next_month on the variable to move forward or backwards in time. So when I move to June, this would display as Tuesday June 1 @ 12:06 AM But when I just show the value of "t" using a straight t.to_s, I get this time of 00:00:00, which is what I expect: Mon Feb 01 00:00:00 -0700 2010 A similar error occurs using end_of_day, but the hour is always 11 PM and the minute is the same integer value that matches the month in integers, i.e the time is 11:06 PM in June, 11:02 PM in February. Qurky? Admittedly a noob to Rails. Thanks for any comments or explanations.

• Need a formula for calculating the tax portion of a total amount.

  In Australia we have to advertise products with tax already added, so rather than say a product is $10 + $1 GST = $11, we normally work backwards and say "ok, total is $10, how much of that is GST ?" For example, for a $10 total, you do 10 * (1 /11) = 0.91, which is the tax component of the $10 total. My problem is I need calculate a formula for working out the taxable component when the tax rate is a variable. So far I've made this calculation although I'm not sure how correct an assertion it is: 10 * (1 / x) = 0.09 * (1 / y) where y = 10, x = 11 Basically i want to work out x on the left hand side when I know that the tax rate is 0.05 for example, which will give me a formula that I can use to calculate the taxable component of an total figure. I want a function into which I can plug in the total price and the tax rate, and get back the taxable component of the total price. I'd really appreciate the help with this as it really makes my head hurt ! :")

• How to upgrade a 1.4.3 TortoiseSVN created repository to 1.6.x?

  A few years ago we deployed TortoiseSVN 1.4.3 to our software development team and we used this client to create a repository on a share point. We are now looking at upgrading to the latest 1.6.x version of TortoiseSVN. I had hoped this would be transparent as the additional features and modifications will all be client-side. For the most part this is true except for a very important feature -- merging. When I try to merge a feature branch back into truck I get a "Merge tracking not supported error." So now the question becomes, how does one upgrade a 1.4.3 TortoiseSVN created repo to be compatible with the latest 1.6.x version of TortoiseSVN? As a follow up question, if we were to successfully upgrade the repo such that the 1.6.x client works flawlessly, will we still be backwards compatible with a 1.4.x client?

• How can I detect whether an image is a PNG or APNG format?

  APNG is backwards compatible with PNG. I opened up an apng and png file in a hex editor and the first few bytes look identical. So if a user uploads either of these formats, how do I detect what the format really is? I've seen this done on some sites that block apng. I'm guessing the ImageMagick library makes this easy, but what if I were to do the detect without the use of an image processing library (for learning purposes)? Can I look for specific bytes that tell me if the file is apng? Solutions in any language is welcome.

• Strategy for developing namespaced and non-namespaced versions of same PHP code

  I'm maintaining library written for PHP 5.2 and I'd like to create PHP 5.3-namespaced version of it. However, I'd also keep non-namespaced version up to date until PHP 5.3 becomes so old, that even Debian stable ships it ;) I've got rather clean code, about 80 classes following Project_Directory_Filename naming scheme (I'd change them to \Project\Directory\Filename of course) and only few functions and constants (also prefixed with project name). Question is: what's the best way to develop namespaced and non-namespaced versions in parallel? Should I just create fork in repository and keep merging changes between branches? Are there cases where backslash-sprinkled code becomes hard to merge? Should I write script that converts 5.2 version to 5.3 or vice-versa? Should I use PHP tokenizer? sed? C preprocessor? Is there a better way to use namespaces where available and keep backwards compatibility with older PHP?

  This question may seem backwards to all logical reasoning, but I encountered a team member who was working on a side project out of the main tree, and had decided ( rephrased ) I'm the only developer, we don't need version control, that's stupid Now personally, the idea horrifies me, and I can't for one justify it. So now my stance is clear, I want some legitimate answers why somebody can excuse themselves from using version control. The default answers will of course be "there is no excuse". Not what I want to see. If you can't see an excuse, then just don't post. ( Feel free to downmod excuses others post that are illegitimate/bad and give reasoning )

• Working with the Objective-C/Cocoa flat namespace

  I've not found anything that addresses my specific name space question as yet. I am working on some AudioUnit plug-ins featuring Cocoa based GUIs. The plug-ins use a common library of user interface classes (sliders, buttons etc) which are simply added to each Xcode project. When I recompile and distribute updates it is pretty much guaranteed that at least one user interface class will have been updated since the last release. If the user launches an older plug-in before an updated plug-in then the old Cocoa classes are already loaded into the run time and the plug-in attempts to use the older implementations - often resulting in a failure one way or another. I know frameworks are the intended solution but the overhead and backwards compatibility issues are not ideal. I prefix all class names where possible but what options do I have to ensure that each plug-in contains unique class names for the shared user interface classes?

  Hello, Is it available to write a query to use same "LIMIT (from), (count)", but get result in backwards? In example if I have 8 rows in the table and I want to get 5 rows in two steps I would: first step query: select * from table limit 0, 5 first step result: first 5 rows; second step query: select * from table limit 5, 5 second step result: last 3 rows; But I want to get it vice versa. I mean from the first step I want last 3 rows and from the second I want 5 first rows. Thank you for your answer

  I've just come across this code snippet in some Exchange 2010 code and I was wondering if anyone knew why the programmer has done it this way. I've never seen an If statement formatted like this. We're running PHP5 on the server and we try to find a good way for managing errors and status reports that arises from the usage of our functions. While using return in functions, the execution is ended, so nothing more can be sent back. Right? Example (these classes are stored in separate tables): public abstract class Parent { public virtual string Property { get; set; } } public class Child : Parent { } The above query executed with Child as the root type will replace {alias} with the alias to the Child table rather than the Parent table. This results in an invalid column exception. I need to execute a like statement as above where the property exists on the parent table rather than on the root type table.

• Set Focus After Last Character in Text Box

  I have 3 text boxes for a phone number. As the user types, it automatically moves from one textbox to the next. When the user presses backspace, I can move focus to the previous text box. The problem is that in IE, focus is set to the beginning of the text box.   I need a C# implementation of Java's PushbackInputStream. I have made my own very basic one, but I wondered if there was a well tested and decently performing version already available somewhere. As it happens I always push back the same bytes I read so really it just needs to be able to reposition backwards, buffering up to a number of bytes I specify. (like Java's BufferedInputStream with the mark and reset methods). Update: I should add that I can't simply reposition the stream as CanSeek may be false. (e.g. when the input steam is a NetworkStream)

  I have a survey web-app that is public facing. I want to set up automated testing with Selenium, but selenium can't capture javascript alerts that we're currently using on the site. I'm thinking about changing our user-facing error notifications to some web 2.0 javascript library so that it is accessible to Selenium. However, I'm not sure how many of our users would be able to experience them properly. How backwards-compatible do I need to be in the present day? I have collected a database of actual user-agent strings of our users. I asked here how I could group them into meaningful data about what browsers our users are actually using.

• How to handle customers with multiple addresses in CakePHP

  I'm putting together a system to track customer orders. Each order will have three addresses; a Main contact address, a billing address and a shipping address. I do not want to have columns in my orders table for the three addresses, I'd like to reference them from a separate table and have some way to enumerate the entry so I can determine if the addressing is main, shipping or billing. Does it make sense to create a column in the address table for AddressType and enumerate that or create another table - AddressTypes - that defines the address enumeration and link to that table? I have found other questions that touch on this topic and that is where I've taken my model. The problem I'm having is taking that into the cakePHP convention. I've been struggling to internalize the direction OneToMany relationships are formed - the way the documentation states feels backwards to me. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks!

• Hibernate: how to maintain insertion order

  I have a list of entities where creation order is important, but they do not contain a timestamp to use for sorting. Entities are added to the end of the list as they are created so they will be ordered correctly in the list itself. After persisting the list using Hibernate the entities appear in the database table in the order that they were created. However when retrieving the list using a new Hibernate session the list is now in reverse order of insertion/creation. Is this expected behaviour? Is there any way to retrieve the list in the same order as it appears in the table? The primary key is a UUID, and the list of entities should always have been created on the same IP address and JVM. This mean sorting by UUID is a possibility but I'd rather not make assumptions. Another possibility is if the list is guaranteed to always come out in reverse order I could always just work through it backwards.

  What is the quickest way to come up to speed on OpenGL ES 1.x? Let's assume I know nothing about OpenGL (which is not entirely true, but it's been a while since I last used OpenGL). I am most interested in learning this for iPhone-related development, but I'm interested in learning how it works on other platforms as well. I've found the book OpenGL ES 2.0 Programming Guide, but I am concerned that it might not be the best approach because it focuses on 2.0 rather than 1.x. My understanding is that 2.0 is not backwards-compatible with 1.x, so I may miss out on some important concepts. • Is there a good reason Uni courses still use "academic" languages like modula2?

  This question prompts me to ask - why do universities still teach in languages like Modula2, when improved modern languages are available for free? Are there uni's that still teach Pascal, for example? I mean, it was good 30 years ago, but... now? Why? Why not Java, C#, Haskell? Related: Is it backwards to still teach LISP?   I'm looking in to Magento's filtering options (Ecommerce System and PHP Framekwork with an expansive ORM system). Specifically the addFieldToFilter method. In this method, you specify a SQLish filter by passing in a single element array, with the key indicating the type of filter. For example, array('eq'=>'bar') //eq means equal array('neq'=>'bar') //neq means not equal would each give you a where clause that looks like where field = 'bar'; where field != 'bar'; So, deep in the bowels of the source, I found a comparison type named 'moreq' that maps to a = comparison operator array('moreq'=>'27') where field >= 27 The weird thing is, there's already a 'gteq' comparision type array('gteq'=>'27') where field >= 27 So, my question is, what does moreq stand for? Is is some special SQL concept that's supported in other databases that the Magento guys wants to map to MySQL, or is it just "more required" and an example what happens when you're doing rapid agile and trying to maintain backwards compatibility.

• ASP.Net MVC Web App not running

  Hi, I developed an ASP.Net MVC v1 web application and it ran fine on our server. The client wanted to move to another server, and the site does not run on the new host's server. The new server specs: Windows 2008 ASP.Net Framework v4 ASP.Net MVC 2 (afaik its included with .Net v4) IIS 7.5 (afaik) Error Message: Could not load file or assembly 'System.Web.Mvc, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. My understanding is that it should be backwards compatible. Is the app really trying to run in ASP.Net MVC v1 when v2 is available? I have already tried deploying the MVC .dlls to the Bin folder, but it did not work. I also tried changing all the system.Web.Mvc Version values (in the web.config for the web app) from 1.0.0.0 to 2.0.0.0, which also did not work. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

  I have a list management appliaction that stores its data in a many-to-many relationship database. I.E. A note can be in any number of lists, and a list can have any number of notes. I also can export this data to and XML file and import it in another instance of my app for sharing lists between users. However, this is based on a legacy system where the list to note relationship was one-to-many (ideal for XML). Now a note that is in multiple lists is esentially split into two identical rows in the DB and all relation between them is lost. Question: How can I represent this many-to-many relationship in a simple, standard file format? (Preferably XML to maintain backwards compatibility)

  i would like to convert the touch location as a world coordinate in my tile game. I would like to calculate the "real" coordinate of the touch, so that i know when the character has to keep going (click on the right of its actual position) or if he has to turn and go backwards. • How to diagnose, and reverse (not prevent) Unicode mangling

  Somewhere upstream of me, "something" happened that looks like unicode mangling. One symptom is that a lowercase u umlaut (ü) gets converted to "ü" (ie, character FC gets converted to C3 BC). Assuming that I have no control over this upstream process, how can I reverse-engineer what's going on? And if that is possible, can I crank the sausage machine backwards and get the original text back? (If it helps to understand this case, the text I received was in the form of a MySQL dump. I think somwewhere in the dump/transport process it got mangled.)
