• Flash Media Server slow over SSL

  We are using FMS to host a VoD site. We host FMS internally (we do not use a CDN). We recently installed an SSL certificate to alleviate connection issues for clients (they're networks either block or don't support RTMP), however we're noticing that when streaming in RTMPS connections are drastically slower (on the order of Mbps). I know SSL causes some amount of over head but both client and server show almost no signs of exertion. Speedtest.net and a locally hosted speed test confirm that bandwidth is not an issue. I'm really not a network guru, so I'm at a loss as to where to check next. Do any of you have an idea why streaming media would run so slow over SSL?

• Installing Solaris 10 on sunT5220 - ZFS/UFS raid 10?

  I am in a bit of a time crunch, and need to get two T5220's built. We were very happy to see two boxes in our aged inventory which had 8 HDD's each, but didn't think to check if they were running hardware RAID or not. Turns out that they aren't. When we install, we are given the option to use UFS or ZFS, but when we select a place to install we're only given the option of installing on one single disk. Is it possible to create a software raid 10 across all of the disks and install the OS on that? Sorry if any lingo is wrong, I'm not really a Sun guy and our guru is out of town right now. Any help would be really appreciated! Note: Most of the guides I've found on google entail installing the OS on a single disk, and then creating a separate RAID 10 on other disks. We would actually like the OS to reside on the RAID 10. Hope that clarifies things.

  Hi Guru's, I am setting Linux Hopping Station to another different servers. My current config to connect to another servers is using different port to connect. e.g ssh -D 1080 -p 22 [email protected] ssh -D 1081 -p 22 [email protected] Now what I would like to have to share the same port from the same box. ssh -D 1080 -p 22 [email protected] ssh -D 1080 -p 22 [email protected] But when I share it, I will get below error: bind: Address already in use channel_setup_fwd_listener: cannot listen to port: 1080 Could not request local forwarding. How could I configure the same port? help. thank you. I want to share the same port because this is needed when configuring firewall in Citrix Firewall on other machine, not needed to many many ports and keep changing when changing connection. thank you.

• USB 3.0 hub; what can it power?

  I own an Asus UX31A laptop, equipped with 2 USB 3.0 ports. I would like to connect several USB devices to one of these ports, using a USB 3.0 hub. 1) Am I correct in assuming the Asus "USB Charger+" commercial blurb corresponds to the USB 3.0 standard "Battery Charging Specification 1.2", and furthermore inferring that the laptop can deliver 1.5A through a USB port? 2) Does a powered external USB 3.0 hard drive draw on the USB power lines? 3) I would like to connect the aforementionned drive, an android phone, and a 200mA rated optical mouse to an unpowered USB 3.0 hub, itself plugged into the laptop. • Frank Buytendijk on Prahalad, Business Best Practices

    In his video on the questionable value of some business best practices, Frank Buytendijk mentions a recent HBR article by business guru C.K. Prahalad. I just learned that Prahalad passed away this past weekend at the age of 68. (Information Week obit) A couple of years ago I had the good fortune to attend Mr. Prahalad’s keynote address at a Gartner event.  He had an audience of software architects absolutely mesmerized as he discussed technology’s role in the changing nature of business competition.  The often dysfunctional relationship between IT and business has and will probably always be hot-button issue. But during Prahalad’s keynote,  there was a palpable sense that the largely technical audience was having some kind of breakthrough, that they had achieved a new level of understanding about the importance of the relationship between the two camps. Fortunately, Prahalad leaves behind a significant body of work that will remain a valuable resource as business and the technology that supports it continues to evolve. • Where did my form go in SharePoint 2010!?

  So I was working on an intro to development demo for the Central NJ .Net User Group and I found a few kinks.  I opened up a form to custom in InfoPath and Quick Published it wouldn’t work.  I imed my InfoPath guru friend, Lori Gowin, she said try to run a regular publish.  The form was still not showing up in SharePoint.  I could open it and it knew my changes, but it would just not render in a browser.  So I decided to create a form from scratch without using the button customize form in the list.  That did not work, so it was google time.  Finally I found this blog post: http://qwertconsulting.wordpress.com/2009/12/22/list-form-from-infopath-2010-is-blank/.  Once I went into the configuration wizard and turned on the State Service everything worked perfectly fine.  It was great.  See I normally don’t run through the wizard and check the box to turn all the services on in SharePoint.  I usually like a leaner environment plus I want to learn how everything works.  So I guess most people had no idea what was going on in the background.  To get InfoPath to work you need the session state.  It’s doing some type of caching in the browser.  Very neat stuff.  I hope this helps one of you out there some day. • HTML5 game engine for a 2D or 2.5D RPG style "map walk"

  please help me to choose a HTML5 game engine or Javascript libraries I want to do the following in the game: when the game starts a part the huge map (full size of the map: about 7 screens) is shown. The map itself is completely designed in the editor mapeditor.org (or in some comparable editor - if you know a good alternative to mapeditor.org - let me know) and loaded at runtime or at design time. The game engine should support loading of isometric maps (well, in worst case only orthogonal maps will be sufficient) both "tile layer" and "object layer" from mapeditor.org should be supported. Scrolling/performance of this map should be fast enough. The map and the game should be either in 2D (orthogonal map) or in 2.5D (isometric map) The game engine should support movement of sprites with animation. Let say I have a sprite for "human" with animation sequences showing "walking" in 8 directions - it should be imported into game engine and should "walk" on the map without writing a lot of Javascript code. Automatic scrolling of the map the "human" nears the screen border. Collision detection, "solid" objects. The mapeditor.org supports properies on tiles. Let say I assign a "solid" property to some tiles in editor. It should be easy to check this "solid" property in the game engine and implement kind of "solid" behavior, so the animanted sprites do not walk through the walls. Collision detection - it should be easy to implement some custom functionality like "when sprite A is close to sprite B - call this function" Showing "dialogs" or popup windows on top of the map - should be easy to implement. Cross-browser audio support - (it is implemented quite well in construct 2 from scirra, so I'm looking for the comparable audio quality) The game itself is a king of RPG but without fighting scenes and without huge "inventory". The main character just walking on the map, discovers some things, there are dialogs and sounds. The functionality of this example from sprite.js http://batiste.dosimple.ch/sprite.js/tests/mapeditor/map_reader.html is very close to what I'm developing. But I'm not a Javascript guru (and a very lazy guy) and would like to write even less Javascript code as in the example...

• How do I handle having too many links on a webpage because of my menu

  I am developing a website that has a drop-down menu at the top of it. The Menu has around 100 links in it that are repeated on every page. Every page also has some number of links below the Menu that may or may not be in the menu itself. My issue is that Google says they generally don't like pages with more than 100 links on them. Is there any way to change the links on the menu so that they no longer "count" towards my max of 100 links? It seems like there should be an easy way to do this but their really doesn't seem to be. the rel=nofollow still counts towards the number of links on the page at least according to Google, so what other options do I have? I looked into where the 100 comes from and I found that it used to be here: http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=35769#2 but that is no longer the case. I found a more definitive and frankly muddier answer here: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/questions-answers-with-googles-spam-guru from Matt Cutts from 2007. Long story short, in 2007 they still felt 100 links was a good number but they stated you could go far beyond that. In fact, they said that pages with high PageRank could have 2-300. It did sound like having many links could reduce the PageRank of the page with all of the links or possibly all of the items linked to. Also, I know IIS7's SEO 1.0 toolkit suggests that pages should have no more than 250 links.

• Camunda BPM 7.0 on WebLogic 12c

  If we go on tour together with Oracle I think we have to have camunda BPM running on the Oracle WebLogic application server 12c (WLS in short). And one of our enterprise customers asked - so I invested a Sunday and got it running (okay - to be honest - I needed quite some help from our Java EE server guru Christian). In this blog post I give a step by step description how run camunda BPM on WLS. Please note that this is not an official distribution (which would include a sophisticated QA, a comprehensive documentation and a proper distribution) - it was my personal hobby. And I did not fire the whole test suite agains WLS - so there might be some issues. We will do the real productization as soon as we have a customer for it (let us know if this is interesting for you). Necessary steps After installing and starting up WLS (I used the zip distribution of WLS 12c by the way) you have to do: Add a datasource Add shared libraries Add a resource adapter (for the Job Executor using a proper WorkManager from WLS) Add an EAR starting up one process engine Add a WAR file containing the REST API Add other WAR files (e.g. cockpit) and your own process applications Actually that sounds more work to do than it is ;-) So let's get started: Add a datasource Add a datasource via the Administration Console (or any other convenient way on WLS - I should admit that personally I am not the WLS expert). • Experience vs. versatility

  Let's say a .NET programmer works at a company which provides software on demand, not as a product. The programmer works in WPF for a period of time and he/she invests lots of time in it. He/she get very good at WPF and Windows Forms and desktop development in general. But the company has to provide a web application now, so the developer has to learn MVC or Web Forms. He/she is not experienced in web development so he/she starts investing time in this new technology and in time they get good at it. But this time the company has to provide a Sharepoint solution, and so on. What is more important: Being very very good at a certain technology, Or be as versatile as possible knowing less in each technology but covering a greater area of expertise? Should the programmer keep studying and working in WPF until he/she reaches a guru level or is it a good thing that they had to learn other technologies as well? I agree with those of you who will say that when learning different technologies you will also learn things which are useful no matter the technology you're programming in. But eventually, when the programmer will want to change jobs, will it matter more that he/she knows some WPF, MVC or Sharepoint than the fact that he/she is insanely good at one of them? I would think the second one is more important since most companies are looking for a developer for a certain technology. I don't think there are many companies looking for technical know-it-all people. What do you think?

• How old is "too old"?

  I've been told that to be taken seriously as a job applicant, I should drop years of relevant experience off my résumé, remove the year I got my degree, or both. Or not even bother applying, because no one wants to hire programmers older than them.1 Or that I should found a company, not because I want to, or because I have a product I care about, but because that way I can get a job if/when my company is acquired. Or that I should focus more on management jobs (which I've successfully done in the past) because… well, they couldn't really explain this one, except the implication was that over a certain age you're a loser if you're still writing code. But I like writing code. Have you seen this? Is this only a local (Northern California) issue? If you've ever hired programmers:2 Of the résumés you've received, how old was the eldest applicant? What was the age of the oldest person you've interviewed? How old (when hired) was the oldest person you hired? How old is "too old" to employed as a programmer? 1 I'm assuming all applicants have equivalent applicable experience. This isn't about someone with three decades of COBOL applying for a Java guru job. 2 Yes, I know that (at least in the US) you aren't supposed to ask how old an applicant is. In my experience, though, you can get a general idea from a résumé.

• Oracle DB, Oracle ADF, GlassFish, JDeveloper, NetBeans IDE

  Today I started some experiments with Oracle guru Steven Davelaar, who lives about 20 minutes away from my place in Amsterdam by underground. Very convenient. He showed me a bunch of things in JDeveloper, while I showed him a bunch of things in NetBeans IDE. He managed to deploy an ADF application to GlassFish in JDeveloper. And, so far, I failed to do the same thing in NetBeans IDE. Quite a few (around 100) JARs are needed, aside from the question of correctly setting up or importing an ADF application, and we're still figuring out which and who and when and where. And how. And if. And why. Nonetheless, I did manage to get Oracle DB set up in NetBeans IDE, after downloading it from here: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/products/express-edition/downloads/index.html Here's what it looks like when registered in NetBeans IDE, i.e., notice that I have a cool sample database available:   Data from the above database I managed to display very easily via the various NetBeans code generators in a PrimeFaces application, exactly as has been done many times in demonstrations and tutorials everywhere, i.e., generate JPA entities, then create an EJB, then inject the EJB into a PrimeFaces data table: The next step is to somehow do the same with ADF in NetBeans IDE. I had some trouble with passwords for Oracle DB, the command line (with Steven's help) proved helpful: Wish us luck as we continue our ADF-inspired journey. • Resetup kernel for virtualbox and now ubuntu is in initramfs state

  My 10.04LTS became Read-Only so I wanted to reboot this virtual machine. Then I couldn't get it back up running. VirtualBox threw Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005) error. I did the kernel re-setup: sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup * Stopping VirtualBox kernel modules [ OK ] * Uninstalling old VirtualBox DKMS kernel modules [ OK ] * Trying to register the VirtualBox kernel modules using DKMS [ OK ] * Starting VirtualBox kernel modules [ OK ] I can't even use sudo in this state. What can I do? (initframfs) /dev/sda1 /bin/sh: /dev/sda1: Permission denied (initframfs) /dev/sda2 /bin/sh: /dev/sda3: Permission denied (initframfs) /dev/sda3 /bin/sh: /dev/sda1: not found I have a similar image so I can check the disks setting if needed. Please help me. Thanks. I have an older version of VirtualBox: 4.0.8 something like that. But other vms on the same VirtualBox are working fine. • Trying to install Canon LBP7750Cdn driver on Ubuntu 12.04

  I'n new to Ubuntu/Linux and had significant difficulties while attempting to configure my printer to work. The automatic driver pairing wizard which Ubuntu uses to identify and install the appropriate drivers did not find my printer's driver. I managed to get it to print when I manually select the generic configuration and checked the PCL6 configuration. However, the printer driver wizard does provide a list of Canon printers and actually do specify my printer as LBP7750C (minus the "dn" at the end, I'm assuming its because duplex ability and networking is not present on all the models - I'm not sure if this could be the source of the problem), but in selecting this option and trying to print I receive this message: Idle - /usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed I searched for this similar problem which other users might have encountered, but while there where plenty of such cases, they all had different resolutions and were all related to HP printers. Canon actually do provide a driver for my printer, but it comes with no installation instructions unless you consider yourself an experienced CUPS guru. Seriously. If anyone can help me solve this foomatic-rip failed problem I'd be really grateful - and I'm sure many other folks too. [BTW, can't Canonical fix this type of thing for the next Ubuntu release? - I't seems like a small problem but it causes many problems and countles hours of production time loss.] Thanks in advance.

• Thinking skills to be a good programmer

  I have been programming for last 15 years with non-CS degree. Main reason I got into programming was that I liked to learn new things and apply them to my work. And I was able to find and fix programming errors and their causes faster than others. But I never find myself a a guru or an expert, maybe due to my non-CS major. And when I saw great programmers, I observed they are very good, much better than me of course, at solving problems. One skill I found good in my mid-career is thinking of requirements and tasks in a reverse order and in abstract. In that way, I can see what is really required for me to do without detail and can quickly find parts of solution that already exist. So I wonder if there are other thinking skills to be a good programmer. I've followed Q&As below and actually read some of books recommended there. But I couldn't really pickup good methods directly applicable for my programming work. What non-programming books should a programmer read to help develop programming/thinking skills? Skills and habits to develop to be good at programming (I'm a newbie)

  I am unable to find official wording and I'm hoping that some Rich Snippets/Schema Guru can give me some insight into proper usage of repeated content when it comes to using markup. I'm building a site that wants to use Schema as the markup type and the owner would like as much usage as possible. The business name, telephone and address will appear on every page now is it valid or even useful to use Rich Snippets on every page where this information is displayed.   I am using Ubuntu 11.10 and am looking for a solution to password protect a bunch of pdf files in a directory in batch. I came across PDFtk and it looks like it might do what I need, but I've reviewed the command line PDFtk examples and can't figure out if there is a way to do it in batch without having to individually specify the output file name for every file. I'm hoping a command-line guru can take a look at the PDFtk syntax and tell me if there is some trick / command that will allow me to password protect a directory of pdf files (e.g., *.pdf) and overwrite the existing files using the same name, or consistently rename the individual output files without having to specify each output name individually. • Design in "mixed" languages: object oriented design or functional programming?

  In the past few years, the languages I like to use are becoming more and more "functional". I now use languages that are a sort of "hybrid": C#, F#, Scala. I like to design my application using classes that correspond to the domain objects, and use functional features where this makes coding easier, more coincise and safer (especially when operating on collections or when passing functions). However the two worlds "clash" when coming to design patterns. The specific example I faced recently is the Observer pattern. I want a producer to notify some other code (the "consumers/observers", say a DB storage, a logger, and so on) when an item is created or changed. I initially did it "functionally" like this: producer.foo(item => { updateItemInDb(item); insertLog(item) }) // calls the function passed as argument as an item is processed But I'm now wondering if I should use a more "OO" approach: interface IItemObserver { onNotify(Item) } class DBObserver : IItemObserver ... class LogObserver: IItemObserver ... producer.addObserver(new DBObserver) producer.addObserver(new LogObserver) producer.foo() //calls observer in a loop Which are the pro and con of the two approach? I once heard a FP guru say that design patterns are there only because of the limitations of the language, and that's why there are so few in functional languages. Maybe this could be an example of it? EDIT: In my particular scenario I don't need it, but.. how would you implement removal and addition of "observers" in the functional way? (I.e. how would you implement all the functionalities in the pattern?) Just passing a new function, for example?

• How to correct a junior, but encourage him to think for himself? [closed]

  I am the lead of a small team where everyone has less than a year of software development experience. I wouldn't by any means call myself a software guru, but I have learned a few things in the few years that I've been writing software. When we do code reviews I do a fair bit of teaching and correcting mistakes. I will say things like "This is overly complex and convoluted, and here's why," or "What do you think about moving this method into a separate class?" I am extra careful to communicate that if they have questions or dissenting opinions, that's ok and we need to discuss. Every time I correct someone, I ask "What do you think?" or something similar. However they rarely if ever disagree or ask why. And lately I've been noticing more blatant signs that they are blindly agreeing with my statements and not forming opinions of their own. I need a team who can learn to do things right autonomously, not just follow instructions. How does one correct a junior developer, but still encourage him to think for himself? Edit: Here's an example of one of these obvious signs that they're not forming their own opinions: Me: I like your idea of creating an extension method, but I don't like how you passed a large complex lambda as a parameter. The lambda forces others to know too much about the method's implementation. Junior (after misunderstanding me): Yes, I totally agree. We should not use extension methods here because they force other developers to know too much about the implementation. There was a misunderstanding, and that has been dealt with. But there was not even an OUNCE of logic in his statement! He thought he was regurgitating my logic back to me, thinking it would make sense when really he had no clue why he was saying it.
