  • How do (or can I) hack a gem temporarily while looking for a bug?

    - by Tom Andersen
I have a gem installed in my home directory on a laptop (eg not THE server). I have installed ruby 1.9.1 and also some other gems, notably right_aws - which allows access to s3, etc with ruby. All works, except there is a bug when I do a query on SimpleDB, and the returned list of items includes an item with any two byte utf-8 character in its itemName(). So I look through the sources of the right_aws gem installed on my machine, and I can see some places where I would like to test a fix. If I edit the file, save changes, (needing a password), then restart the server (script/server), it ignores my changes. I am quite new at ruby - do you have to 'compile' or other similar move to get the source code changes made take effect? I can see the edited file is changed by viewing it in terminal, etc.

  • RAils Authlogic and Hobo

    - by MrThomas
    Is there anyone out there who has an idea of how to incorporate Hobo as an admin subsite on a existing rails app running on authlogic. I've been following this tutorial, but it not working. Any help or Tutorial link please! Some erorr code for anyone who fancies a crack: ~/dev/copy> ./script/server => Booting Mongrel => Rails 2.3.4 application starting on http://0.0.0.0:3000 /opt/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/activesupport-2.3.4/lib/active_support/dependencies.rb:426:in `load_missing_constant': Expected /Users/Mister/dev/copy/app/controllers/admin/admin_controller.rb to define Admin::AdminController (LoadError) from /opt/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/activesupport-2.3.4/lib/active_support/dependencies.rb:80:in `const_missing' from /opt/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/activesupport-2.3.4/lib/active_support/inflector.rb:361:in `constantize' from /opt/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/activesupport-2.3.4/lib/active_support/inflector.rb:360:in `each' from /opt/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/activesupport-2.3.4/lib/active_support/inflector.rb:360:in `constantize' from /opt/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/activesupport-2.3.4/lib/active_support/core_ext/string/inflections.rb:162:in `constantize' from /opt/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/hobo-1.0.0/lib/hobo/model_controller.rb:61:in `all_controllers' from /opt/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/hobo-1.0.0/lib/hobo/model_controller.rb:57:in `each' from /opt/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/hobo-1.0.0/lib/hobo/model_controller.rb:57:in `all_controllers' from /opt/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/hobo-1.0.0/lib/hobo/model_router.rb:97:in `add_routes_for' from /opt/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/hobo-1.0.0/lib/hobo/model_router.rb:83:in `add_routes' from /opt/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/hobo-1.0.0/lib/hobo/model_router.rb:83:in `each' from /opt/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/hobo-1.0.0/lib/hobo/model_router.rb:83:in `add_routes' from /opt/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/hobo-1.0.0/rails/../lib/hobo.rb:73:in `add_routes' from /Users/Mister/dev/copy/config/routes.rb:6 from /opt/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/actionpack-2.3.4/lib/action_controller/routing/route_set.rb:226:in `draw' from /Users/Mister/dev/copy/config/routes.rb:1 from /opt/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/activesupport-2.3.4/lib/active_support/dependencies.rb:145:in `load_without_new_constant_marking' from /opt/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/activesupport-2.3.4/lib/active_support/dependencies.rb:145:in `load' from /opt/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/activesupport-2.3.4/lib/active_support/dependencies.rb:521:in `new_constants_in' from /opt/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/activesupport-2.3.4/lib/active_support/dependencies.rb:145:in `load' from /opt/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/actionpack-2.3.4/lib/action_controller/routing/route_set.rb:286:in `load_routes!' from /opt/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/actionpack-2.3.4/lib/action_controller/routing/route_set.rb:286:in `each' from /opt/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/actionpack-2.3.4/lib/action_controller/routing/route_set.rb:286:in `load_routes!' from /opt/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/actionpack-2.3.4/lib/action_controller/routing/route_set.rb:266:in `reload!' from /Users/Mister/.gem/ruby/1.8/gems/rails-2.3.4/lib/initializer.rb:537:in `initialize_routing' from /Users/Mister/.gem/ruby/1.8/gems/rails-2.3.4/lib/initializer.rb:188:in `process' from /Users/Mister/.gem/ruby/1.8/gems/rails-2.3.4/lib/initializer.rb:113:in `send' from /Users/Mister/.gem/ruby/1.8/gems/rails-2.3.4/lib/initializer.rb:113:in `run' from /Users/Mister/dev/copy/config/environment.rb:11 from /opt/local/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/rubygems/custom_require.rb:31:in `gem_original_require' from /opt/local/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/rubygems/custom_require.rb:31:in `require' from /opt/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/activesupport-2.3.4/lib/active_support/dependencies.rb:156:in `require' from /opt/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/activesupport-2.3.4/lib/active_support/dependencies.rb:521:in `new_constants_in' from /opt/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/activesupport-2.3.4/lib/active_support/dependencies.rb:156:in `require' from /Users/Mister/.gem/ruby/1.8/gems/rails-2.3.4/lib/commands/server.rb:84 from /opt/local/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/rubygems/custom_require.rb:31:in `gem_original_require' from /opt/local/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/rubygems/custom_require.rb:31:in `require' from ./script/server:3 the environment and gem in the app: RAILS_GEM_VERSION = '2.3.4' unless defined?   • Rails scalar query

    - by Craig
I need to display a UI element (e.g. a star or checkmark) for employees that are 'favorites' of the current user (another employee). The Employee model has the following relationship defined to support this: has_and_belongs_to_many :favorites, :class_name => "Employee", :join_table => "favorites", :association_foreign_key => "favorite_id", :foreign_key => "employee_id" The favorites has two fields: employee_id, favorite_id. If I were to write SQL, the following query would give me the results that I want: SELECT id, account, IF( ( SELECT favorite_id FROM favorites WHERE favorite_id=p.id AND employee_id = ? ) IS NULL, FALSE, TRUE) isFavorite FROM employees Where the '?' would be replaced by the session[:user_id]. How do I represent the isFavorite scalar query in Rails? Another approach would use a query like this: SELECT id, account, IF(favorite_id IS NULL, FALSE, TRUE) isFavorite FROM employees e LEFT OUTER JOIN favorites f ON e.id=f.favorite_id AND employee_id = ? Again, the '?' is replaced by the session[:user_id] value. I've had some success writing this in Rails: ee=Employee.find(:all, :joins=>"LEFT OUTER JOIN favorites ON employees.id=favorites.favorite_id AND favorites.employee_id=1", :select=>"employees.*,favorites.favorite_id") Unfortunately, when I try to make this query 'dynamic' by replacing the '1' with a '?', I get errors. ee=Employee.find(:all, :joins=>["LEFT OUTER JOIN favorites ON employees.id=favorites.favorite_id AND favorites.employee_id=?",1], :select=>"employees.*,favorites.favorite_id") Obviously, I have the syntax wrong, but can :joins expressions be 'dynamic'? Is this a case for a Lambda expression? I do hope to add other filters to this query and use it with will_paginate and acts_as_taggable_on, if that makes a difference. edit errors from trying to make :joins dynamic: ActiveRecord::ConfigurationError: Association named 'LEFT OUTER JOIN favorites ON employees.id=favorites.favorite_id AND favorites.employee_id=?' was not found; perhaps you misspelled it? from /Users/craibuc/.gem/ruby/1.8/gems/activerecord-2.3.5/lib/active_record/associations.rb:1906:in `build' from /Users/craibuc/.gem/ruby/1.8/gems/activerecord-2.3.5/lib/active_record/associations.rb:1911:in `build' from /Users/craibuc/.gem/ruby/1.8/gems/activerecord-2.3.5/lib/active_record/associations.rb:1910:in `each' from /Users/craibuc/.gem/ruby/1.8/gems/activerecord-2.3.5/lib/active_record/associations.rb:1910:in `build' from /Users/craibuc/.gem/ruby/1.8/gems/activerecord-2.3.5/lib/active_record/associations.rb:1830:in `initialize' from /Users/craibuc/.gem/ruby/1.8/gems/activerecord-2.3.5/lib/active_record/base.rb:1789:in `new' from /Users/craibuc/.gem/ruby/1.8/gems/activerecord-2.3.5/lib/active_record/base.rb:1789:in `add_joins!' from /Users/craibuc/.gem/ruby/1.8/gems/activerecord-2.3.5/lib/active_record/base.rb:1686:in `construct_finder_sql' from /Users/craibuc/.gem/ruby/1.8/gems/activerecord-2.3.5/lib/active_record/base.rb:1548:in `find_every' from /Users/craibuc/.gem/ruby/1.8/gems/activerecord-2.3.5/lib/active_record/base.rb:615:in `find'

  • Rails Plugins Load Path - I have ActiveRecord Models in a Plugin, How do I load them without Namespa

    - by viatropos
I have a bunch of models for Oauth services, things like: TwitterToken GoogleToken There are OAuth versions and OpenID versions for some, so I decided to logically organize my gem like so: lib lib/my-auth-gem lib/my-auth-gem/oauth lib/my-auth-gem/oauth/tokens/google_token ... lib/my-auth-gem/openid/tokens/google_token ... I would like to be able to name my models GoogleToken, rather than MyAuthGem::Oauth::Tokens::GoogleToken. How do I do that? This will be for Rails 2.3+ and Rails 3.

  • Rails & Twilio: Receiving nil when storing texts received from Twilio

    - by Jon Smooth
I have set up the request URL in my Twilio account to have it POST to: myurl.com/receivetext. It appears to be successfully posting because when I check the database using the Heroku console I see the following: Post id: 5, body: nil, from: nil, created_at: "2012-06-14 17:28:01", updated_at: "2012-06-14 17:28:01" Why is it receiving nil for the body and from attributes? I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong! The created and updated at are storing successfully but the two attributes that I care about continue to be stored as nil. Here's the Receive Text controller which is receiving the Post request from Twilio: class ReceiveTextController < ApplicationController def index @post=Post.create!(body: params[:Body], from: params[:From]) end end EDIT: When I dump the params I receive the following: "{\"controller\"=\"receive_text\", \"action\"=\"index\"}" I attained this by inserting the following into my ReceiveText controller. @params = Post.create!(body: params.inspect, from: "Dumping Params") and then opening up the Heroku console to find the database entry with from = "Dumping Params". I simulated a Twilio request with a curl with the following command curl -X POST myurl.com/receivetext route -d 'AccountSid=AC123&From=%2B19252411234' I checked the production database again and noticed that the curl request did work when obtaining the FROM atribute. It stored the following: params.inspect returned "{\"AccountSid\"=\"AC123\", \"From\"=\"+19252411234\", \"co..." I received a comment stating: "As long as twilio is hitting the same URL with the same method (GET/POST) it should be filling the params array as well" I have no idea how to make this comment actionable. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I'm very new to rails. Here's my database migration (I have both attributes set to string. I have tried setting it to text and that didn't work either) : class CreatePosts < ActiveRecord::Migration def change create_table :posts do |t| t.string :body t.string :from t.timestamps end end end Here is my Post model: class Post < ActiveRecord::Base attr_accessible :body, :from end Routes (everything appears to be routing just fine) : MovieApp::Application.routes.draw do get "receive_text/index" get "pages/home" get "send_text/send_text_message" root to: 'pages#home' match '/receivetext', to: 'receive_text#index' match '/pages/home', to: 'pages#home' match '/sendtext', to: 'send_text#send_text_message' end Here's my gemfile (incase it helps) source 'https://rubygems.org' gem 'rails', '3.2.3' gem 'badfruit' gem 'twilio-ruby' gem 'logger' gem 'jquery-rails' group :production do gem 'pg' end group :development, :test do gem 'sqlite3' end group :assets do gem 'sass-rails', '~> 3.2.3' gem 'coffee-rails', '~> 3.2.1' gem 'uglifier', '>= 1.0.3' end

  • What would cause native gem extensions on OS X to build but fail to load?

    - by goodmike
I am having trouble with some of my rubygems, in particular those that use native extensions. I am on a MacBookPro, with Snow Leopard. I have XCode 3.2.1 installed, with gcc 4.2.1. Ruby 1.8.6, because I'm lazy and a scaredy cat and don't want to upgrade yet. Ruby is running in 32-bit mode. I built this ruby from scratch when my MBP ran OSX 10.4. When I require one of the affected gems in irb, I get a Load Error for the gem extension's bundle file. For example, here's nokogigi dissing me: > require 'rubygems' = true > require 'nokogiri' LoadError: Failed to load /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/nokogiri-1.4.1/lib/nokogiri/nokogiri.bundle This is also happening with the Postgres pg and MongoDB mongo gems. My first thought was that the extensions must not be building right. But gem install wasn't throwing any errors. So I reinstalled with the verbose flag, hoping to see some helpful warnings. I've put the output in a Pastie, and the only warning I see is a consistent one about "passing argument n of ‘foo’ with different width due to prototype." I suspect that this might be an issue from upgrading to Snow Leopard, but I'm a little surprised to experience it now, since I've updated my XCode. Could it stem from running Ruby in 1.8.6? I'm embarrassed that I don't know quite enough about my Mac and OSX to know where to look next, so any guidance, even just a pointer to some document I couldn't find via Google, would be most welcome. • Ruby Gems Not Installing, Hangs While Getting Gems

    - by Tim Hoolihan
I recently cleared out all of my ruby install and installed form sources using the instructions at hivelogic I have have been able to install a few gems, but most of the time, "sudo gem install rails" hangs. I've added the -V flag, and it just seems to hang, I don't get any error. And the process can not be killed. I can only reboot to kill the process. • I need to modify the code of a third-party gem, where and how to do?

    - by Freewind
I'm building a website based on RoR, and using a third-party gem "devise". I have used rake gems:unpack to unpack the "devise" to my "vendor/gems" directory. Now, I found the method "SessionsController.create" provided by "devise" is not fit my requirement, and I want to modify it. But I don't know what it is best way: just modify the method SessionsController.create" directly? create another SessionsController and override the "create" method?

  • How do I deactivate a specific version of gem?

    - by JayX
Currently I have two versions of rack installed on my computer 1.0.1 and 1.2.1 However, when I tried to push my git to Heroku, it complains You have already activated rack 1.0.1, but your Gemfile requires rack 1.2.1. Consider using bundle exec. (Gem::LoadError) How can I deactivate rack 1.0.1 and activate 1.2.1 instead? (I can't uninstall 1.0.1 since it's under system folder and I don't have the root password)

My version of rubygem was very old, but at least it was working before. How do I fix the above problem or roll back to my earlier version?

  • Rails 3 can not find sqlite3-ruby

    - by uswaretech
I am trying to learn rails3. I tried folowing the installation guide from guides.rails.info, I installed sudo gem install rake rack-test rack-mount erubis mail sudo gem install tzinfo builder i18n memcache-client sudo gem install text-format thor And rails 3 via sudo gem install rails --pre Now I create a new app rails abc And try rake db:create Which fails with Could not find gem 'sqlite3-ruby (>= 0, runtime)' in any of the sources. So I try installing sqlite3-ruby sudo gem install sqlite3-ruby Which fails with Could not create Makefile due to some reason, probably lack of necessary libraries and/or headers. Check the mkmf.log file for more details. You may need configuration options. So I install it via apt-get sudo aptitude install libsqlite3-ruby1.8. And still get same error on rake db:create.

  • Writing a Jeweler Rakefile that adds dependencies depending on RUBY_ENGINE (ruby or jruby)

    - by Matt Zukowski
I have a Rakefile that includes this: Jeweler::Tasks.new do |gem| # ... gem.add_dependency('json') end The gemspec that this generates builds a gem that can't be installed on jruby because the 'json' gem is native. For jruby, this would have to be: Jeweler::Tasks.new do |gem| # ... gem.add_dependency('json-jruby') end How do I conditionally add the dependency for 'json-jruby' when RUBY_ENGINE == 'java'? It seems like my only option is to manually edit the gemspec file that jeweler generates to add the RUBY_ENGINE check. But I'd rather avoid this, since it kind of defeats the purpose of using jeweler in the first place. Any ideas?
